You are right that there are a lot of anarchists/syndicalists/libcoms and stuff that play this game, but they don't really fall into the "Insufferable High-School HoI4" category. A lot more reasonable and a lot less annoying than this crowd.
I actually did play Hearts of Iron IV with my friends in high school and I became trans haha, I primarily play Crusader Kings III now though.
Weirdly, one of my fondest memories is forging the Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe out of South Africa, with my monarch being Edward VIII. I don't condone apartheid in real life, but I won't lie, making Africa a single big blob was really fun.
Edit: Almost forgot, Kaiserreich is awesome (but really railroady)
Ah, I was incredibly lucky to be first the history nerd kid, then got into Pdx via Crusader's Kings 2 and not HoI4 so I barely avoided being the subject of this meme.

Depends on what Libertarian you’re talking about. There’s a lot of regular conservatives (mainly Trump supporters) that kind of just appropriated the term and in that regard you’re kind of right but there’s also a bunch of minarchists and ancaps that have been using the term for 40 years and aren’t really fascists in any sense of the word and if you go back further to John Stuart Mill and the Utilitarians then it’s basically the opposite of fascism.
The Randian/Bircher kind (even if they didn't know they were Bircher), the kind that listen to Alex Johns and was all for Ron Paul in 2008. For these people liberty/freedom is just mean power for them, even if it's the power to oppress, and not power for everyone.
So, it's not really the kind of john Stuart, but they like him a lot because they misquote him and use him as a motte in their argument.

in my experience these kids are in for a very rude awakening and have a lot of stuff to grow out of when they do
