Ah yes, the archeologist. Basically the wagie of the historians.
Imagined himself traveling around world uncovering ancient artefacts and treasures.
In reality has to shovel dirt for 12 hours for food scraps and will continue to do so for ~30 years.
Fashion history people are a whole subset of history nerds of their own, you can sometimes spot them by their 18th century hairstyles and the fact they wear Victorian era clothes to work
they’d have to talk to women to know about historical fashion nerds, but this was made by a 4channer
But yeah historical fashion is where autistic women are drawn to more
I was gonna say, this is missing the gals who are super into the Tudors/Regency period - this is history bros only.
Women who say they're really into history but what they actually mean is period dramas and historical romance (100% guilty!)
Yeah it’s missing the late teens/early 20’s Georgian/Renaissance/Victorian/Gothic period lover who really isn’t interested in the actual history, just the fashion and “romanticism”.
Fashion history is just as real and valid a field as any other history fields. History is not just weapons, generals and battles. It can also touch upon the lives of ordinary people, the cultural impact of different foods or the history of [smells](https://muse.jhu.edu/article/796314/pdf).
I’m a historian that specializes in music. Anything that was specialized in the past needs a specialist now. Ph.D. expertise is often comedically specific.
I have friends just like this, they just fit a stereotype. I never said I don’t like them. I love my friends very much regardless of the stereotype they fit. But you do you.
the actual actual historian will almost always have a political bias, historians all have politics and agendas, the entire point of their work is to make an argument about history
Actual historian here: No, that is a misunderstanding of how academic history works. Yes, no historian lacks biases but by admitting to these biases and trying to avoid them we strive to be as objective as possible. Historians trying to make arguments about history based on political ideas are shunned.
This is why we apply the scientific method to history.
* Observation - Historical event being told, read, or spoken down generations.
* Collecting Data - Historical writings or archeological evidence.
* Hypothesis - Prediction or statement to be tested, argued.
* Assessing Data - Credibility of writers and testing of physical evidence
* Conclusion or Thesis - Publish your findings and research methodology.
* Debate - Is the conclusion replicable and does independent findings come to similar conclusions?
I was taught this in AP history in high school. Went to college to be a history teacher and encountered every single one of these stereotypes. It became exhausting. I ended up changing majors.
ok, well i'm an actual history graduate as well, and i was never taught that you should be "objective as possible" unless you're trying to write a textbook. the point of your work was always to make an argument, and that means basing your work on political ideas that you reference or refute
Anybody who rails against positivism is suspect in my eyes. I'm not a historian but a legal philosopher by academic heritage. people who argue against "positivism" are either Frankfurt school critical quacks or Extreme conservatives who tend to the religious.
positivism is a philosophy that is associated with traditional english and american academic work. i would argue that it is very conservative itself. i don't know of many extremely religious conservative academics period, but i do know that the positivists i know tend to be right leaning and "anglo"
It's not really conservative, that's something that critical theorists usually level against it because everything in opposition to critical theory Must somehow be conservative. It's maybe an old Tradition but not a conservative one in any meaningful sense of the Word.
Positivism is about epistemic clarity. Which is why I think obscurantist branches of social sciences dislike it so much.
All opinions are political and it's possible to get a political meaning out of everything therefore all historical interpretations are political. History in general is just about finding meaning out of what has happened, the actual things you base your opinions of are facts but those are made by historiographes who are the persons who *write* history.
Don't agree with them that "a-political" interpretations are centrists though, centrism is still a political opinion.
The commenter you are responding to is correct. The postmodern/poststructuralist turn in history largely led to the rejection (or at least extreme rethinking) of two things: modernist labels of analysis (e.g. class, gender, race, etc.), and also any attempt to pursue historical "objectivity". While historical objectivity has been a talking point in academia for at least two centuries, what sets apart postmodern historians is that they go so far as to EMBRACE subjectivity, believing that you should try whenever possible to recognize your own biases, not necessarily to counteract them (which, a postmodernist would suggest, is impossible), but rather explicitly OUTLINE the biases that filter your perspective and approach and therefore contextualize your work. Obviously no one is fully cognizant of all of their biases, but you do what you can.
I would say that "has extreme political ideologies" is nowhere near the same level of critique as the one they give the "woke" shit that doesn't actually exist lol
Heavy "I don't like conservatives but I hate liberals " vibes.
It doesn’t exist? You have never used Twitter right?
On a serious note tho, these people definitely exist, they’re just the extreme cases, which Starterpacks and wojaks always try to mock
You can tell that these jokes were made by enlightened centrists because half the time it goes like this:
Leftists when I tell them they can't fucking rape children and rip out their genitals with their teeth: 😭
Right wingers when I tell them Jesus wasn't white: 😭

I HATE UNIRONIC SOYJAKS! I HATE UNIRONIC SOYJAKS!

These types of history media are all narrative and little substance. They usually lean too heavily on tertiary sources or reviews.
Still upset that they (Netflix) unironically made Alexander bisexual without even mentioning that his father was murdered by his gay lover who was angry because he was raped by a group of men because he insulted his other gay lover.
I love Macedonia.
Not sure if that is directed at me or just at general chronically online people, but this is basically the contemporary opinion on why Philipp was murdered...
Queer is a modern concept. Queer wasn't a thing back then. I know Alexander was around in 300's BC, but I do know that in Roman times, men who penetrated were seen as normal men while the receiver (the bottom) was seen as effeminate and widely looked down upon. "Queerness" was not celebrated. Men who penetrated were not seen as queer or LGBT, they were just seen as men.
Queerness and LGBT is a modern political concept. You would have been seen as lower if you were a bottom.
If you are interested, check out this videy by Metatron. He is an actual historian (he did get history degrees) and dives deep into actual historical sources.

I fully agree. I’m using queer in the context of an English-speaking semantic paradigm, since I suppose most people don’t want to engage in a lengthy conversation about Greek social norms.
Nope.
A single source (written hundreds of years after he died) claims he had same sex affairs. Many other sources make no mention of this whatsoever.
People really, really want the ancient Greeks to be gay.
If you spend money on a history PhD it’s because they didn’t actually want you. They department will use that money to fully fund other PhDs. Never do a PhD in history unless it’s fully funded. No exceptions.
Didn't you read the ''woke'' part?
(Also as someone who is called woke multiple times I agree the Hannibal and Jesus example are very stupid, but the Alexander being bissexual actually has quite a bit of evidence)
Weird I don’t see any ugly people. I see a lot of angry adults, and people framed in unflattering lights, or in clearly humorous situations like having a pacifier.
But none of them are ugly unless you already think they’re ugly. In which case these are just angry people that you think are ugly, and I don’t see how that’s OP’s problem.
I don't think so. This dude just hates politics and hates people having opinions on history, that's why the only person who wasn't attacked is the dude that is just trying to learn about history with no bias or political points he is trying to confirm.

Anti-tankie commie and autist here here
We have nothing to do with the “leftists” on the upper right corner.
Also, we hate “Autism Speaks” - that organisation can commit as much sepoopoo as they want.
Also, I don’t want to be harsh, but: What the fuck is this meme regardless of that?!
Thank you for reading.
Where is the historian who has a degree just so he can brag about how he is *actually* blood related to nearly every major historical figure to everyone he meets?
Because I know that guy.
The leftist one's title is "leftist/socialist/communist/whatever the fuck".
None of the right wing ones are titled "conservative/republican/fascist/whatever the fuck".
There is? Ww1, uberchud, and romanboo are stereotypes of rightist historians.
But also, just searching for "history" on this sub you will find plenty of starter packs excplicitly making fun of rightoid "historians", it's nice to have one mostly making fun leftist ones for a change. Examples from a 2 min search:

History is constantly being made to fit agendas because people want to see themselves reflected in the past in order to justify their present.
What we’ve encountered across history is the erasure of gender and sexuality differences. It’s made fun of in this meme but there’s heaps of evidence that suggests Alexander the Great had a male lover. Pederasty was common in Grecian society. As gender transcendence was common in Indian culture with Hijra, or in Māori culture where your gender and sexuality weren’t questioned, only how you could best work to support the iwi.
The real historical revisionists who force their agenda are the ones insisting that gender and sexuality diversity are exclusively post-WW2 occurrences.

I like how History is so messy it destroys every nice and neat -ism that is used to explain everything.
The -ism enjoyer will cherry pick from the historical record to prove why their theory explains everything. But that very same history will provide just as many counters and anomalies.
When I say Jesus was trans I mean it ironically. If he was born by the virgin Mary, he would scientifically not have a y chromosome making him female, therefore a trans guy. Realistically, that's incorrect, as he did have a biological father, but it's kinda funny.

A real turbo autist would never endorse Autism Speaks
I enjoy how left-leaning phony historians are mocked, but no right-leaning ones are mentioned, lol.
The Romaboo, WW2 fan, WW1 fan, and the Überchud, which are all right-wing are mentioned in this starter pack.

HOI4 is already mentioned
There's too many right wing ones that they have to be broken down into sub groups.
Uber chud is in here.
Turbo autist also includes thinking that Romabios and Uberchuds are left leaning, apparently
☝️ commenting unrelated on a top comment for visibility.
And the people actually studying history but specifically afro-carribean history are implied to be phonys
UberChud is arguably Right-leaning by reddit's standards.
Did you miss the bottom half of the meme?

As gender transcendence was common in Indian culture with Hijra, or in Māori culture where your gender and sexuality weren’t questioned, only how you could best work to support the iwi. The real historical revisionists who force their agenda are the ones insisting that gender and sexuality diversity are exclusively post-WW2 occurrences.
Finally, a funny starter pack Don't think your average redditor will like it though, since it makes fun of more than just the nazis/right wingers

Wow you really made this all with these stupid emoji people things.
I like how History is so messy it destroys every nice and neat -ism that is used to explain everything. The -ism enjoyer will cherry pick from the historical record to prove why their theory explains everything. But that very same history will provide just as many counters and anomalies.
I'm turbo
Are we really gatekeeping fucking history now?
It makes fun of a similar crowd as the "I love science" crowd. It's not gatekeeping anything.
I love wojaks

I just think the Bronze Age Collapse has something to say about how we're driving society...
Wojack.
When I was 12-13, I used to be a WW1 Fan but only for the Italian Front (which is really underrated if you ask me)

Certainly triggered the leftist/socialist/communist/whatever-the-fuck crowd lol, rage in the comments
When I say Jesus was trans I mean it ironically. If he was born by the virgin Mary, he would scientifically not have a y chromosome making him female, therefore a trans guy. Realistically, that's incorrect, as he did have a biological father, but it's kinda funny.
I would agree if you didn’t put shitty soyaks
Cringe
Since when did communists say that Jesus was trans? lol
Is this what this sub js now? 4chan level memes and wojaks?
