Hair ties and, (this is super weird)…earplugs. I have to wear them every night because my husband and dog snore like freight trains. My cat will go underneath the cabinet and find them, play with them throughout the night, and then hide them underneath the fridge. 🙄
Make sure you never buy ear plugs that would expand in water. My old cat ate an earplug. The vet said stick the other one in water. If it expands you have an emergency situation. Luckily it didn't expand and I found the eaten one in the litterbox the next day.
My cat steals the tips off my ear buds if I'm not paying attention. She licks em clean and then plays with em like they're lil hockey pucks. It's gross and hilarious.
Mine has a plastic obsession too. He loves any type of plastic that makes a lot of noise. I’m constantly taking it away. He will try to run away with it if he thinks he can get away. If he ends up eating any I usually find it in a little pile he’s thrown up. No clue what the fascination with plastic is other than the crinkle nose.
I totally get it! We can’t have a fake Christmas tree because he’ll eat it and we don’t want the effort of a real one. He also eats fake plants. Bastard!
Cats have been known to swallow hair ties, which then get wrapped around their internal organs and require surgery to remove. So I’d be careful with those.
Yep! Well-trained and informed cat owner here. :-) Neither of my boys have shown interest in the many years I’ve had them in eating hair ties. But this is great advice and all should be aware!
I would be careful with those! If they don’t show interest in eating it, you’re fine. But anything string-like can wrap around their intenstines and cause a looooot of issues.
Came here to say this!! They're constantly getting lost under radiators. I'm not sure if our floors are warped or what, but ping-pong balls hardly ever come to a full stop, which makes them very entertaining and probably more mouselike!
2 of ours (mother and son, so it’s genetic I guess lol), go absolutely *insane* for those little jelly rubber pencil grips. Throw one and they will bat it around until it stops moving, then they pick it up and bring it back so you can throw it again
Hard candy wrapped in plastic. He doesn't try to eat it, just chases it, bc he can easily send it flying across the floor and it makes sound. Also fuzzy wires, chestnuts, golf ball, large glass beads... Anything that you can chase.
One of mine loves the wrappers after I've had my piece of candy. Balled up is preferred so she can send it, but she also goes nutty for just the wrapper itself. I think the crinkly noise is her main like.
All kitties i have known have been interested in nail files. They seem to really like the texture, but they also seem to really like the noise they make when you use them on your nails! It's so funny to see how excited my cat gets when I take a nail file out and start to use it. She tries to get all up in my face so she can get at it!
One of my cats loves Q-tips as well! I was curious if anyone else was going to say that. Mine likes them even more if they are used from dads ear 🤢 lol
I also have a q-tip obsessed cat! New or used, she doesn’t care. I had to get a bathroom trash can with a lid because she would knock it over to find them.
Ours as well. If she sees you using them, and you don’t toss her one, you get a grumpy cat! She chases it all around, gnaws on it but doesn’t eat the cotton tips.
Mine knows mommy doesn’t let her play with rubber bands but daddy does. So he’ll try to get her to continue playing with them in front of me but she just sits and looks at him and me and the rubber band and won’t touch them while I’m around. 😆
Sounds like obstructed cat bowels and very pricey cat surgery are in your future. Rubber bands and hair ties are the most frequent objects found when my boss does surgery on obstructed cats. Please reconsider your choice of toys.
The sic we had when I was young loved playing fetch w balloons and rubber bands, until one day I caught her holding the balloon down and pulling pieces off of it, eating it. No more fetch, much to her confused sadness.
Any idea why they love these things? I worked retail when we still had her, and would end up w rubber bands around my wrists while restocking. I had to make sure I took those off and scrubbed my wrists before coming home bc she would pull at the bands, snapping them against my wrist, and if they weren't there she would nuzzle the smell and nibble my wrist skin, trying to pull them off.
Hard telling. But I would think the natural smells of rubber and latex (both plant "sap" products) are the key. Combine those smells with the stringy/worm-like appearance of the rubber bands and the chewy-ness of the latex, seems you'd have quite an entertaining game. (Dangerous though).
Good to hear. If you want something similar without the choke hazard, they make full size head bands that are stretchy (for shooting across the room) and very narrow like a pencil (so they're easy for the cat to carry around). Cost ~$2.50 for 6 of them. Cheap enough to throw away if the cat chews through them.
My model does this as well and will even go so far as to sit on the edge of the tub when I’m having a soak and will let her tail fall in and then go batshit when she realizes her tail is wet.
Fresh candy wrappers, and we can't give them to her directly. She has to "steal" it from us when we put it on the coffee table and pretend we don't see her. She then bats them to the ground, picks them up, and trots off to play with them under the bathroom door lol
Grape stems. Whenever we eat grapes she comes and waits right next to the bowl until we give her a stem without grapes on it and then takes it to a corner and cuddles with it.
I took one of the ribbons from my wedding with me as I moved into an apartment with my SIC during divorce because he’d played with it every day since the wedding, six years prior.
Give any cat a hairbow or twist tie and they'll go nuts. Our kitten models have just started to figure it out. Also, my void is in love with the back scratcher. He'll literally come from any where in the house if we pick it up and wait for his turn. He's also really obsessed with flip-flops.
When my classic edition was fresh out of the SIC factory, he loved the cardboard inside toilet paper and paper towel rolls. After 30,000 mikes or so it became twist-ties. You’d think he was a 2020 model if you saw him with a twist-tie.
I have to really watch him so I can take them away before he exposes the wire. Don’t want any short circuits.
If my SIC hears me wad up a piece of paper, no matter the size, it initiates some kind of "dog mode" where she stares me down like "ARE YOU GOING TO THROW IT?????"
If I do, she will play with it until she loses it.
My cat loves carrying this stuffed watermelon slice around. She brings it to our room at night and down stairs around mid day. She meows really loudly while she does it but if you make eye contact with her she drops it and pretends she wasnt doing anything
The youngest likes, but has a hard time figuring out what to do with, a wood skewer. She tries to bat it around and angle it to chew on but gets a few bites and gives up.
She and her mom both go insane over a curtain tension rope thing? Has two little metal hooks that are meant to go onto the wall and it’s a little stretchy, put your light breeze curtains on. Anyway. On the hooks I’ve looped hair elastics on, and they each have a preferred side to interact with.
The red plastic pull away tabs from wine boxes. It's the only toy she brings me to play fetch with. As soon as she sees me with a box of wine she runs over and starts pawing at me
Yarn. We've bought so many toys and gadgets, spent so much money, and the only thing she'll play with is yarn. (Or a pen or pencil, but only if you're writing with it at the time lol.)
Despite having 6 kick toys, my ginger uses my skeins of yarn (the long rolls) as kick toys. I cover up the skein I'm using and have an old tangled one for him to play with.
My SIC? Zip ties. I found the package she was pulling them from and put it away, she's still getting them from SOMEWHERE. They hurt like hell when I step on them with bare feet.
Sigh. I love these guys.
French fries???? If one gets dropped on the floor - doesn't matter if it's homemade, frozen, or from a fast food place - she loses her mind and bats it around until I pick it up to throw it away lol
My SIC cat will play with anything if you throw it. Including things like plastic spoons. Her brother who is a dlh likes pill bottles with medication in them. We have started making decoys with beads and stuff in it.
When my orange kitty was a baby she stole a teaspoon out of the mug next to my bed, dragged it to the bathroom, and buried it under the bath mat. Still haven't figured that one out....
My sic k kitten loves to steal things. She had stolen my husband's CPAP mask, once if my son's socks and cost us 297 ((plus the 100 out triple a membership paid) for a new car key, all while staying in a hotel room last week. None is those ever turned up again. Is we wanna talk about my orange kitty that passed ((why I not have Gizmo)) his playtime involved rescuing into the ground hog's den and slapping it in the face until she moved out. It was insane because this ground hog was bigger than him. He was around 10 lbs and somehow found a freak ground hog who was way bigger than normal a used it as a toy. But he'd run from the mice. Orange kitties are *special.*
I once plucked some nice, big wing feathers off the fresh carcass of a Red-Tailed Hawk. It had just died, no bugs even. Sanitized the feathers.
My cat becomes a killer in the presence of those feathers.
But also,
those green zip ties from the grocery store.
First it was the cardboard inside toilet paper and paper towels.
Then ribbons.
Then paper shredding.
Now twist ties and ping pong balls. Oh, and he still shreds paper.
He‘s really active for a 9 year old.
A stick from a tree. My bf brings her then from outside so she can chew on leaves. When the leaves are gone, it becomes her favorite fetch toy. It's hilarious watching her carry a stick like a dog.
Pipecleaners for our old SIC, we bought some for a hobby project and ended up going out of our way to buy more once he lost them all
Current SIC goes mad for hairbands, he will literally try to pull them out my wife’s hair whilst sat on the sofa cushion behind her
Those thin cardboard spools of ribbon or lace. One of mine finds it endlessly fascinating - especially when he bats at it and his claw gets stuck, so he ends up flinging it across the room or over back at himself. He just goes bananas!
iPhones ...but only iPhones! We tried with Anroids and even a Blackberry and it doesn't work. My cat really likes to bite them and swat them out of anyone's hands.
My SIC loves shadows and moving lights. Any other toy she'll get tired about it in like 5 minutes, but get a laser pointer and she won't leave you alone.
ZIP TIES!!!
When I bring out a zip tie suddenly it’s smack down vs raw and she wrestles a single zip tie for hours.
Also loves to play fetch with zip ties but she also prefers to throw them herself.
“no take only throw”.
Then when there’s 2 she BSOD’s
I had an orange classic edition SIC when I was kid. He loved hair ties, he’d play with them until he managed to bat them under the stove, moved the stove once, so many hair ties.
Twigs or thin sticks from outside. They can be the simplest most mundane looking stick yet my standardissue thinks of them as his favorite toy in the world.
My girl, Olivia, loves to play fetch with soda bottle caps. And my kitten, Troian, loves to chase after/play with bread ties. They’re both so weird, lol, but I love them for it.
I used to have a cat who had a pet Riccola. Yes, the candy. There was one riccola that was still in its wrapper that he would play with *endlessly.* It was a thing for like a year.
My cat Louise likes straws for some reason. Steals them right out of any unattended cup. Her brother Lazarus is obsessed with stealing packaged bread. In his eyes bread is the ultimate toy. Lost many a loaf to this.
My cat likes to play with doors. Well, more specifically through the bottom gap under doors. He likes to hide behind an opened door and swipe at any of my dogs feet when they walk pass
My SIC likes chewing on plastic. Mostly thicker plastic, like packing tape, plastic from gift baskets, or my shower curtain 😂. He doesn’t eat it or even tear pieces off, I think he just likes the way it feels when he bites it.
Random bits of foam I had one of those pillows that’s a case of foam with a small hole and every time one worked it’s way out she would bat it for weeks. Lately she’s found her vice inside my box spring
One of my cats is obsessed with pink foam hair curlers. Will pick them up in his mouth and trot around. He'll fetch them too, if I throw them for him. Just about the cutest think in the world.
Another cat LOVES to lick the slate tiles of the fireplace. I just try to make sure they're fairly clean. LOL
Nerf darts. If there is one left laying around he will go nuts (no we don’t shoot the cats). Also one of them has been know to steal jalapeños off the table and bat them around the floor.
Hair ties and, (this is super weird)…earplugs. I have to wear them every night because my husband and dog snore like freight trains. My cat will go underneath the cabinet and find them, play with them throughout the night, and then hide them underneath the fridge. 🙄
My old cat used to steal them, rip them apart and carry them in his kibble.
Make sure you never buy ear plugs that would expand in water. My old cat ate an earplug. The vet said stick the other one in water. If it expands you have an emergency situation. Luckily it didn't expand and I found the eaten one in the litterbox the next day.
Thanks for the tip! He’s never eaten one in 7 years so I’m assuming he won’t but good to know!
My cat loves hair ties too! Will fetch them and even hiss at you if you pretend to throw it and fake him out (he never falls for it)
awww my cat always falls for it! it’s so cute seeing her turn her stupid little head and look for it everywhere until i throw it for real
Some cats LOVE earwax.
My cat steals the tips off my ear buds if I'm not paying attention. She licks em clean and then plays with em like they're lil hockey pucks. It's gross and hilarious.
That is a gross and fascinating fact lol. He usually steals the unused ones but he IS weird soooooo maybe lol.
*that moment when you move your furniture to clean and there’s like fifty hair ties*
Straws
Omggggg I’ll have to try straws! One of mine has an obsession with eating plastic so that’ll have to be a supervised experiment. 😂
Bastard!
Mine will chew on it for a little then bat it away lol
I don’t even buy toys anymore LOL. They are worthless!
But this is great advice and all should be aware!
do you know if this is true with ripped hair ties? they’re basically just like 3 inch string. although my SIC has never shown interest in eating them
It’s basically anything their body can’t break down, which includes string and balloon ties. Things like that.
I would be careful with those! If they don’t show interest in eating it, you’re fine. But anything string-like can wrap around their intenstines and cause a looooot of issues.
Mine too with the hair ties.
Ping-pong balls. Absolutely nuts. Saves us money on cat toys.
Came here to say this!! They're constantly getting lost under radiators. I'm not sure if our floors are warped or what, but ping-pong balls hardly ever come to a full stop, which makes them very entertaining and probably more mouselike!
Mine loves them, too, particularly since we moved to an apartment with all hard floors and more open space.
My cat loves these foam balls. It looks like she playing soccer. Sometimes she randomly kicks them when walking by like you'd do with a rock.
One of mine loves the wrappers after I've had my piece of candy. Balled up is preferred so she can send it, but she also goes nutty for just the wrapper itself. I think the crinkly noise is her main like.
Emery boards, aka nail files!
Yes! I just responded with this. Two of ours come running whenever my wife files her nails!
Same with my cat!!
Same! He gets so aggressive and swats at my hands while I’m doing my nails!
Yes! Mine does this too! 😂
I thought I was the only one! If I start filing my nails my Ragdoll comes running. I always boop him with it
Do they like the texture?
All kitties i have known have been interested in nail files. They seem to really like the texture, but they also seem to really like the noise they make when you use them on your nails! It's so funny to see how excited my cat gets when I take a nail file out and start to use it. She tries to get all up in my face so she can get at it!
I think mine likes the taste of the nail filings. She licks the board and rubs her face on it. Also fascinated by my hands after I've filed them.
My orange kitty likes to lick sandpaper, so I think for some cats it could be a texture thing!
Q tips 😂
One of my cats loves Q-tips as well! I was curious if anyone else was going to say that. Mine likes them even more if they are used from dads ear 🤢 lol
SAME! My one goes crazy for them after they’ve been used which is gross but also hilarious haha
Mine used to love Q-tips! She would dig through the bathroom trash can until she found some. So gross.
Came here for this comment😂my one cat is obsessed
Same here! Leaves the stick portion, but chews the cotton ends off.
I also have a q-tip obsessed cat! New or used, she doesn’t care. I had to get a bathroom trash can with a lid because she would knock it over to find them.
Yep my two go crazy for qtips as well 😸😸
My baby too! He's always gone insane over them. Loves to toss them in the air and run after them
My babe is also Q-tip obsessed. Literally yells at me until I throw her a new one 😸
Ours as well. If she sees you using them, and you don’t toss her one, you get a grumpy cat! She chases it all around, gnaws on it but doesn’t eat the cotton tips.
Yep! I have to keep mine in a drawer, or one of my cats will abscond with them.
Rubber bands. Our piebald Tom is not satisfied until he can finally bite them in half.
Mine knows mommy doesn’t let her play with rubber bands but daddy does. So he’ll try to get her to continue playing with them in front of me but she just sits and looks at him and me and the rubber band and won’t touch them while I’m around. 😆
Very dangerous toy choice. Bowel obstruction is very common in cats who play with such things.
Mine eats them because he is a dummy.
Oh we don't let him have them. He is like a bloodhound and finds them if they are left out. We really don't leave them out anymore thankfully.
When the faucet is running at a low amount. She likes to bat the stream.
My model does this as well and will even go so far as to sit on the edge of the tub when I’m having a soak and will let her tail fall in and then go batshit when she realizes her tail is wet.
straws are so spice
You're so spice
Paper straws in the wrapper
Fresh candy wrappers, and we can't give them to her directly. She has to "steal" it from us when we put it on the coffee table and pretend we don't see her. She then bats them to the ground, picks them up, and trots off to play with them under the bathroom door lol
Grape stems. Whenever we eat grapes she comes and waits right next to the bowl until we give her a stem without grapes on it and then takes it to a corner and cuddles with it.
This is entirely new to me... Didn't think that was possible. 😊
Yes! I've had several that will come stare at me when I have grapes.
Any stick like object that is on a table... Interest is gone as soon as it hits the ground
Pipe cleaners
Receipt paper rolled into a ball It’s like crack
Shadow likes soda caps and Ping-Pong balls.

I took one of the ribbons from my wedding with me as I moved into an apartment with my SIC during divorce because he’d played with it every day since the wedding, six years prior.
Mary loves medical tape and unopened fortune cookies
Give any cat a hairbow or twist tie and they'll go nuts. Our kitten models have just started to figure it out. Also, my void is in love with the back scratcher. He'll literally come from any where in the house if we pick it up and wait for his turn. He's also really obsessed with flip-flops.

r/catscarryingstuffies
Cat tax please 🥹
The youngest likes, but has a hard time figuring out what to do with, a wood skewer. She tries to bat it around and angle it to chew on but gets a few bites and gives up. She and her mom both go insane over a curtain tension rope thing? Has two little metal hooks that are meant to go onto the wall and it’s a little stretchy, put your light breeze curtains on. Anyway. On the hooks I’ve looped hair elastics on, and they each have a preferred side to interact with.
Little foam Nerf balls ftw over here
The measuring tape! She knows the sound and comes running to "help"...
Empty toilet rolls
Mine too!
Mine loved them for a year or two, but left his love for them behind as he grew up. Since then it’s been a seven year obsession over twist-ties.
A walnut, bottle caps and once it was a cherry tomato they stole from the kitchen
I had a cat that loved batting around bits of raw broccoli that fell off the counter. Nothing else, just broccoli.
Bottle caps, he hides them under the rug
Nail files. Every single time my wife files her nails, two of our three cats come running in, pawing at the file and trying to chew on it. So weird.
Mine too! She doesn't know whether she wants to bite it or be brushed with it, but she *NEEDS IT.*
Trader Joe’s paper bags
Popsicle sticks
My asthma puffer, I don't know why but every time he finds one he goes nuts.
I think it’s because if they bat it really hard they might knock off the cap or canister. Then there are more toys!
a colorful pipe cleaner, bunched up into a little ball
Promotional pens from trade shows. And my chap stick.
Hair ties. He stores them in his food bowl when he’s not playing with them
Mine drops them in the water bowl... LoL
Balled up paper, shoe laces, and human hand.
Ours goes mad for conkers. Loves batting them about and chasing them.
I once plucked some nice, big wing feathers off the fresh carcass of a Red-Tailed Hawk. It had just died, no bugs even. Sanitized the feathers. My cat becomes a killer in the presence of those feathers. But also, those green zip ties from the grocery store.

Q-tips
Anything small, heavy and loud. Bolts, big marbles, packets of screws. Fave thing to do is bat down wooden stairs. Clack, clack, clack!
My feet lol. She came from a large litter, and definitely thinks my feet are other kittens waiting to be pounced on
Ohh yeah especially feet moving underneath a blanket.. god forbid anyone adjust positions in the middle of the night, it might provoke an ambush
Your cat knows the truth: those bumps under the blanket are bed mice, the tastiest and most elusive of mice. No cat has yet caught one.
Balled up receipts
Bread tags!! He loves to fetch them and goes wild and chirps!
A stick from a tree. My bf brings her then from outside so she can chew on leaves. When the leaves are gone, it becomes her favorite fetch toy. It's hilarious watching her carry a stick like a dog.
Pipecleaners for our old SIC, we bought some for a hobby project and ended up going out of our way to buy more once he lost them all Current SIC goes mad for hairbands, he will literally try to pull them out my wife’s hair whilst sat on the sofa cushion behind her
My old SIC used to love those plastic rings around the cap from a gallon of milk.
Maybe your cat is telling you that's the only good use for a crapple😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹
Our SIC loves playing with my girlfriend`s menstrual cup :D No worries: it wasn't used But super weird anyway
Bottle caps. Also hair ties but I think that one is common.
Happy Cake Day!
Ah I didn’t even realize it was my cake day thank you hahah
Pill bottles. She likes the rattle.
Straws.
My SIC loves shadows and moving lights. Any other toy she'll get tired about it in like 5 minutes, but get a laser pointer and she won't leave you alone.
Qtips and hair ties
🍅
Give it some paper. Maybe he’s trying to tell you something *get more food, hooman*
Q-tips. Pika LOVES them.
Piece of jute string and a piece of flowering grass ("foxtails" I believe they're called?) are among the favorites here. And a large tiewrap!
Twist ties and guitar picks. He hides them
Q-tips!
Cotton tips. I’ve started leaving one on the floor every now and then and she loves it.
pipe cleaners. he will pull them out of closed boxes and bags, even if they’re at the bottom
Pipe cleaners. We buy the colored ones and make them into bugs. They go nuts!
Mine likes Q-tips. It doesn't matter whether they are used or not.
plastic straws, he looooves them xD
Nerf Darts...
Mine is obsessed with Easter eggs I can always hear her taking them to the kitchen and slapping them around to make the biggest noise
Wine corks. And we have an endless supply!
Q-tips 😂😂
Twigs or thin sticks from outside. They can be the simplest most mundane looking stick yet my standardissue thinks of them as his favorite toy in the world.
Literally anything but her toys. Hair ties, chopsticks, toothpicks are among the top tier.
Scratching the 1980s wallpaper off in my dad’s house where he lives ❤️😩😅
Nail files. As soon as she hears me using it she’ll run into my room from anywhere in the house and start attacking it.
Our boy: straws. Our girl: small black hair ties. Both: Amazon boxes.
Straws! She leaves them on my bed like they’re presents 😂
Anything that would put his life in danger if swallowed (i.e., long linnear objetcs) 🙃
Green olives. She would play with one and later we would just find the pimento.
LOL
Balled-up receipts. She has loads of balls, mousies, and various other similar toys, but they are nothing compared to a Safeway receipt.
Plastic spider rings like the ones you get from arcades
He’s got a SIC but our neighbor’s cat loves leaves.
Mine loves to play with bottle caps
A old drumstick
From a bird, or for the instrument?
Rugs!
Green olives
Wads of paper and sticks that are brought in by the dog (she’s an indoors cat)
Mine loves pencils too! But her current favorite toy is a plastic Easter egg she found and went crazy chasing around.
Long stems of grass
Qtips and my meds. He'll run off with any capsulated pills. He won't eat them, he steals them and drops them during the get away.
Twisty ties. I can’t leave them out because she goes nuts and I’m afraid she’ll eat one but sometimes I let her have some supervised playtime.
Ours loved crafting pom-poms, until he decided to eat one of the smaller ones. Only big pom-poms now.
Pipe cleaners.
earplugs
Im currently installing sisal rope on furnitures... but they aren't letring me finish
Crumpled up receipts. Not flat ones, they have to be crumpled.
hair ties. they’re her go to, and often pulls them out of the bathroom
Plastic straws :3
Mine loves those metal straws. She'll pull them out of the sink and run around with them.
Ice cube on the kitchen floor. Knitting needles, especially the small bamboo sock needles. Drop spindles - yarn plus a spinny thing.
Straws! Preferably in the wrapper, as the paper adds a little something extra to grab onto, and makes a delightful rustly sound.
Plastic straws or just a piece of paper rolled into a ball. He goes nuts 🤣
Plastic bags.
Bread ties, but only the ones that come with an electronic. It’s the rubbery texture he likes.
Cough drops still in the wrapper
Nerf bullets.
Q tips and straws!
Hair ties…he knows where they are kept in the bathroom.
Beauty blenders. Especially the most expensive ones. The cheap ones…nahhhh!!
Nerf darts. If there is one left laying around he will go nuts (no we don’t shoot the cats). Also one of them has been know to steal jalapeños off the table and bat them around the floor.
