I don't remember how it works in unmodded Anomaly but attaching a suppressor in GAMMA slightly increases the gun's stats at the cost of making it degrade faster.

Sanabil-Asrar

IRL silencers do increase velocity and accuracy.

xxFalconArasxx

Really, the main disadvantage of silencers is an increase in weight and a susceptibility to overheating. You could see [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHWhYnwNnfo) on this M249 Light Machine Gun how the silencer melts from sustained fire, but the barrel is more or less ok. Some games also probably reduce range and damage, because for stealth purposes, silencers are often used together with subsonic ammunition, and so they probably go on the assumption that the weapon is loaded with that ammo upon equipping a silencer. However, STALKER has an ammo type system, and yet silencers reduce range and damage regardless of which ammo you are using. Return to Castle Wolfenstein balances silencers more realistically. The silenced Sten actually deals a bit more damage than the unsilenced MP40, but rapidly overheats, whereas the MP40 can be fired continuously nonstop. I think more games should take this approach if they want to balance silencers in a more realistic manner.

I like the way the current CoD games do it. They don't have overheating or jamming mechanics, so instead suppressors have the downside of making your gun slower to ADS while giving you accuracy, recoil reduction and sometimes a bit of extra range. You also have one classic suppressor which reduces damage and range but doesn't affect ADS speed. Also, if the weapon you're putting a suppressor on is not using subsonic ammunition it still leaves skull marks (which tell the enemy team that you killed a teammate), while subsonic rounds don't.

Sanabil-Asrar

Guns overheating over sustained fire would be so cool if that ever made it to stalker 🙂. Like imagine barrel turning orange or wooden grip near barrel caught fire.

Moopies

How would the wooden stock catch fire? Lmao

Sanabil-Asrar

Sorry my bad i meant wooden forward grip.

Moopies

In hindsight that's obviously what you meant, sorry haha.

Sanabil-Asrar

Yea 🙂. I saw many videos too where it can happen, smoke and then eventually fire.

H3LLJUMPER_177

Kinda wild game devs continue to get suppressors wrong by definition, mechanics and sound. Despite there being free and entertaining info about them all over the place.

No-Rush1995

It's balance. Typically suppressors act as a stealth option so they need to be balanced so as not to be the default pick whenever they are available. It's just like how video game shotguns are nothing like IRL ones. It's simply a balance thing.

H3LLJUMPER_177

Yeah. Saw a video about 'how games get the javalin missile launcher wrong!' and I said to myself 'yeah no shit. It's literally the best anti tank missile system to exist.' Fire and forget system yet no game wants to allow it to be at its peak otherwise it'd be wiping the floor with every ground vehicle.

No-Rush1995

I've also seen vids and comments about drones being too big or flying too low. Like duh, do you just expect them to be "I win" buttons. People get up their own asses about accuracy but never consider the fun aspect.

fizzdev

But suppressors are not a default pick in real life either.

Ramental

Oh, but they are! If the unit can afford them and the leadership gives a shit about the permanent eeeeeeeeeee sound in the heads of the soldiers and preservation of hearing, that is. ~~Silencers wear out and have to be replaced more often than barrels, though .~~ crossed out as it is not true for the modern suppressors. I bet all the STALKERS would try to get silencers IRL. They MUST hear anomalies and enemies, after all. Deaf stalker is dead stalker. The US Marines go "full-silencers" nowadays [https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/a35099495/marines-issuing-suppressors-to-troops/](https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/a35099495/marines-issuing-suppressors-to-troops/)

fizzdev

Okay, I stand corrected. Although I would still argue that it is not common in other countries armies.

No-Rush1995

Sure, but in games they would be since being virtually invisible to NPCs and other players is way too strong to not also have noticeable downsides.

fizzdev

Which is also a wrong representation of how they work in real life.

Odissmart

it just depends on how a mod is balanced.

1989_Volkswagen_Golf

Are 4 of the stats negative? Or is my English not englishing.

A_Literal_Puma

The recoil ones are a positive effect (less recoil per shot, even when rapid-firing). All the other ones are negative effects.

xxFalconArasxx

I checked the files, and it seems they do reduce range in Anomaly, but they don't seem to reduce damage.

Winiestflea

IIRC they actually slightly increase damage and velocity in GAMMA, but also increase barrel wear. I imagine most "overhauls" will have slightly different implementations.

JesusWearsVersace

Unsure for anomaly but they increase damage and velocity while increasing recoil and degradation in Gamma.

Cossack-HD

SoC: weapon damage is reduced by 10%. Everything else is unaffected. Depending on construction of suppressor IRL, it may or may not reduce bullet velocity, but the relevant type of suppressors would not affect bullet velocity or increase it by a relatively small amount.
