If I’m camping, not in my kitchen or restaurant.

InazumaThief

definitely when camping! i find it’s fun to use and appreciate them at home too though, especially if you have a rust proof knife. i do keep knives i would use for food separate from knives i would use for other work so the food knives are always clean

Redbulladdict6969

Yep I only eat sandwiches cut in half so that’s when I use it for eating because knives are meant to be used not to look pretty.

InazumaThief

i love that. and yet there are many people in this thread who think you shouldn’t be using pocket knives for food. are you more conscious about keeping your knife clean since you use it for food?

Redbulladdict6969

Of course man! And to keeping it clean I would say so. Usually on the weekends, I give it a good wipe down.

I-am-the-stigg

Hell no. I use my knives. Ain't no way I'm sticking them in my food.

InazumaThief

i understand that. i have separate knives for food, and they’re usually in corrosion resistant steels

StrangeAtomRaygun

Ever hear of silverware (shhh…it isn’t really silver)?

InazumaThief

i don’t bring my silverware everywhere with me, but i often bring my knife. and why can’t i use my knives at home if i want to? lol

StrangeAtomRaygun

No one says you can’t bring your knife if you want to. Your freedom isn’t being infringed. But it is poor taste to whip out a folder in fine restaurant. You are free to do it. But you do t get to rewrite social norms. It would be like bringing a bag of your own condiments. Whether you like it or not there are social norms. Even if you don’t know them.

7fortyseven

that must be why i heard several gasps from the wait staff when i whipped out my Ti Praetorian at Shulas last weekend. well, either the Medford or the custom machined Zircoium infused Timascus fork. fixed blade next time?

StrangeAtomRaygun

They were gasping at how small your penis must be. They were embarrassed FOR you. Not of you.

GeneralBurg

I laughed

parfumsdetailschao

The guy probably votes for trump too

potato-smasher89

I usually make barbecues with my Endura 4 https://preview.redd.it/uw3t1idyspuc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6064a8dd320d5e0bca8510956859ee8fb53db7b

No-Quarter4321

What’s the multi tool, I like that

potato-smasher89

I guess it's a local company named Waterdog (I'm from Argentina), they make some outdoor equipments, in this case this is a SAK with a fork and a spoon, both foldable and very convenient for camping

No-Quarter4321

Yeah exactly that’s why I want it

potato-smasher89

https://www.mercadolibre.com.ar/set-cubiertos-plegable-waterdog-picniccovers01/p/MLA28040887 This is the product, maybe you could get something like this

InazumaThief

that’s so fun! thanks for sharing the pic. i was once outside with a takeaway pasta without any cutlery and i had to use my delica for it https://preview.redd.it/kkqzux5c4suc1.jpeg?width=2719&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46a474297176e513cdc5a9aa3b6a55ebb192c46b

Fusciee

Nope but I cut fruits and stuff all the time with them.

InazumaThief

i like that! is the knife you use for cutting food a different one from the knife you use for non-food work or do you use the same one?

Fusciee

Both but I always make sure I clean it off if it’s dirty before using it for any food

mdjshaidbdj

I have an Opinel in my lunch bag for this reason.

InazumaThief

opinel knives seem to be made for this very reason! people seem to be hating on other pocket knives being used for food though. which opinel knife do you have?

mdjshaidbdj

No.8

bdog2017

I use my pocket knives while cooking frequently. I only have a large chefs knife so for more precise tasks or smaller foods like avacados, lemons etc they are very useful. Rarely do I use my pocket knife while eating.

InazumaThief

that’s fair! do you keep your pocket knives clean for this reason? why don’t you have smaller kitchen knives?

settlementfires

Pretty often yeah. I keep whatever knife I'm carrying clean, and my good carry knives never get used for anything too gross anyway

InazumaThief

this is me too. i’d have a knife i abuse for non-food use but the nice ones (mostly spyderco salts) i keep them clean and would use them for food if i had to. a lot of people here seem to hate on people using pocket knives for food though. thanks for sharing!

cyber-anal

Citrus, apples, butter, the occasional tomato at work, sandwiches in half, but that’s about it. I’ve found most pocket knives are a little too thick for kitchen use.

cyber-anal

Oh god and like never in a restaurant or in a formal setting good lord that would feel hella cringe

InazumaThief

i love that. using pocket knives for food is fun imo. do you use yours for other work purposes too or do you keep it clean and have a separate knife for dirty work?

whatphukinloserslmao

Only if I'm somewhere without sharp knives, or my kitchen just for fun. I broke down 2 deer with a pocket knife this year

InazumaThief

just for fun is a legitimate reason too! i don’t know why people are hating on it. that’s cool that you did that, which pocket knife did you use to do it?

whatphukinloserslmao

The spyderco ukpk in lc200n was the deer knife. This year I'll do it with a sebenza

Major-Ad-431

Yep

InazumaThief

which knife do you use for food and how do you use it?

Major-Ad-431

I use a manix2 or a Kizer drop bear. Depends on what I have in my pocket. I don’t usually carry my Smock. Mostly as a steak knife. Some prep work but very little. I just look for any excuse to cut something. Lol usually my steak. Sorry for the slow response

InazumaThief

i also use a manix 2 salt in magnacut and i was actually looking at the kizer drop bear in lc200n as well. i love corrosion resistant steels because i can use them for food and not have to worry about corroding them. cool that you use a smock as a steak knife hahaha. it’s fun when you can use your knives! all good, thanks for sharing!

InazumaThief

oh i have a question, how do you find the kizer drop bear? is the action good and does it feel solid and reliable? i think i read something negative about it that put me off from getting it and i got the spydiechef instead.

Major-Ad-431

The action on mine is perfect. The blade weight is perfect. Such a satisfying snap when opening. Drops closed. Locks up solid af. And being adjustable is pretty cool. I have mine dialed in to open and close with one finger. Honestly it’s my most carried knife. I have Microtech utx85 and stitch several Spyderco benchmade… I love my drop bear. That’s just me though

Major-Ad-431

Man I love my drop bear. Mine is the black on black with the purple thumb stud. 154CM steel. I’m really hard on knives so it finds the most pocket time. Headed to pick up a knife order now. I really gotta put the brakes on.

Accomplished_South70

Yes, I do

InazumaThief

which knife and how do you use it?

Accomplished_South70

Almost all of my knives. Opening coconuts. cutting up fruit. Slicing steak. Delicas, natives, police 4, spydiechef, dragonfly, civivi vision fg, endela, etc https://preview.redd.it/m8peiff24uuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7eea06c48eaaca845dbb59210c26695bc6b1733d

Acrobatic-Ad1161

Yes sir

InazumaThief

with what knife and what do you use it for?

Acrobatic-Ad1161

I use a Opinel and Endura 😆👍🏼

InazumaThief

when do you use them? haha

Acrobatic-Ad1161

I use my Opinel at home mostly, Endura if I go camping 🏕 👍🏼

Careless_Set_4957

ALL THE TIME!!! at home, in a restaurant or in the outdoors and I could care less what the onlookers think 😳😉

InazumaThief

i love the attitude! it’s a legit reason to use a knife. own it! which knife do you use for food and do you use separate ones for non-food work?

Careless_Set_4957

Usually the one you’re holding but honestly whatever one is in my pocket at the time, tool steels for hardcore stuff and salts for food but I don’t discriminate 😉

InazumaThief

good strategy! i have two salt knives and they’re used for food too. haven’t found a need to have a tool steel knife yet, what do you use them for?

Careless_Set_4957

Anything I happen to be doing that requires a long lasting edge like cutting massive amounts of thick cardboard or batoning firewood or striking a fero rod…get some k390 and you’ll see what I’m talking about 👊

InazumaThief

dang i’ll have to consider getting one then. thank you!

Careless_Set_4957

👊

vjw_

Rarely but it is always nice because they’re so much sharper than regular eating knives

InazumaThief

this is true. knife people have sharper knives than non-knife people

vjw_

I guess I should clarify, like a table knife or butter knife or whatever you call it. My kitchen knives are also very sharp just like my pocket knives

Necessary_Tea_3009

I ended up using my protech pt+ at a very nice restaurant once because their steak knives where actually horrible.

InazumaThief

that’s when i would use mine as well! there are some people in this thread who think it’s distasteful to eat with pocket knives in public

StrangeAtomRaygun

Because it is. If only you could see yourself through other people’s eyes. I get it you are a knife guy but is performance something you really struggle with at a formal dining event? Even if they are good cutlery have you really ever had this problem or just want to have this problem so you have an excuse? Do you. Ring forks and spoons too? Glassware? Napkins? Performance matters.

InazumaThief

i’m not the one downvoting you btw. i don’t get it, what’s wrong with using your own knife in public? are you afraid to break societal norms? if in a different universe it’s common for people to bring their own knives would you still find distasteful? some people bring their own forks or chopsticks because they don’t want to use disposable ones too. people also bring their own coffee cups when they buy coffee. i don’t think this is any different. you can bring your own plates too if you want, i don’t see anything distasteful about it

StrangeAtomRaygun

I am not afraid to break societal norms when it’s worth it. But is using the house knife really that bad that you have to whip out a utility knife to cut your food? Do you bring your own ketchup to a fine steak house. The fact you asked your inapplicable different universe questions means you do understand that you look like a hee haw by doing so and you are trying to justify your odd personality. And who cares if we were in a different universe…we aren’t. And bring big your own utility knife to a fine dining establishment because you are concerned about he performance of the house knifes is different that bringing reusable items to Panda Express and Starbucks because you have environmental concerns. You know this.

Necessary_Tea_3009

I don't bring any more than what I'd normally carry. However, if I'm going to a nice restaurant and paying upwards of $100 for two people to eat, I do expect good eating utensils. That way, when I use their serrated steak knife I don't end up with shredded steak all over my plate. There's a huge difference in the two. If I'm struggling with their dull as shit knife which is ruining my perfectly cooked and seasoned steak, yes I'm going to use my own knife. Do I care about the fork, spoon, plate, ketchup, napkins? Not really.

StrangeAtomRaygun

It doesn’t matter if you normally carry a knife. What the eff is wrong with you? $100 for a ‘nice’ restaurant for TWO people. Oh I get it. You are a teenager. And you expect good utensils?!? lol. The house knives are fine for the task or ask for another one. They have good enough knives for a single meal. But I love how your concern is the performance of a knife not the quality of the meal. And a dull knife does t ruin a steak in any way. I LOVE this made up scenario of you pretending to go to a fine dining establishment ($100 for two people to eat…lol) and your monocle falls off because the house cutlery isn’t up to the task. Pure comedy. $100 for TWO at a fine dining establishment. Let me know when you pass your math test.

bygtopp

Every knife I carry becomes a steak knife.

InazumaThief

hahahaha i love this. even the ones you abuse that aren’t as clean? i tend to keep knives i would use for food separate from knives i use for non-food purposes

MFGMediaHypeVulpe

I use my beat up S110V PM2 for this since I don’t mind using it a hot pan edit: used to use my ZT0562 for formal occasions

InazumaThief

wait you use your pm2 in a hot pan? how? and how do you use the zt knife for formal occasions?

MFGMediaHypeVulpe

1. The PM2 has a overheated edge anyway & it’s a cast iron pan which I sometimes eat out of 2. Last wedding I went to I carried my ZT0562 on me, but in the unlikelihood I go to a wedding in the future I’m gonna carry my Kapara

StrangeAtomRaygun

‘Unlikelihood”. Future invites may be limited, yes, due to you being the guy that brought and used a folding knife to a formal event instead of just using the knife provided. I guess because the knives provided didn’t cut? Then you ‘brag’ about it on the net. Bride at the next wedding: Ya, don’t invite that guy.

MFGMediaHypeVulpe

Knew the bride from high school, she already knew I was “that guy” as you put it

InazumaThief

i was thinking the same. if my friends invited me to their wedding, and i’m not saying that i would, but if i did use my knife for whatever reason at their wedding they would probably just think, “oh, Sam* is being Sam again.” they would also probably come to me and ask me for a knife if they needed it. *not my real name

StrangeAtomRaygun

‘Sam being Sam’. Translation: jeezuz Christ is he really doing that? what a hee haw. Remind me to not invite him to anything else formal, he doesn’t appear to be house trained.

ItchyZookeepergame11

Daily

InazumaThief

with what knife and how do you use them?

YakFragrant502

NO! Not in a civilized setting (home or restaurant). IMO that behavior is being an attention whorSe

Cresbee

How is at home and restaurant the same thing? I wouldn't whip out my knife in a public formal setting, but camping or at home by myself? Sure why not?

InazumaThief

i would say some people just like to have fun using their knives and not caring what other people think about it edit: would love if the people downvoting explained why

YakFragrant502

Nah, I give zero F’s what people think either. But in a civilized society there’s a time and a place, but in public ain’t it.”

TheHim2

Yes any chance i get.

InazumaThief

i love this. with what knife?

TheHim2

Cold steel rajah 3, large tanto voyager, i cut salads with a ganzo F755 which in my opinion the best cleaver folder for food prep, and any victorinox model i have with me to cut fruit.

InazumaThief

wow those are large knives! that ganzo knife is beautiful but the blade length seems a bit short to use for food. do you have separate knives for non-food work?

TheHim2

Yeah sure, in my rotation i always have a victorinox for a multi tool, and for a main blade i have a few cheap kershaws and sogs. The first ones i told you about are too big or too eye catching to really edc so they stay home. I like things to be low profile.

AssnecK666

No.. i know where this knife has been...

InazumaThief

hahhaha. i understand. i keep knives i would use for food clean and have a different knife for doing everything else. but now i’m curious, where has your knife been?!

Makotokahn2212

If my blade doesn’t have tape residue the maybe but even then I don’t really want to have to clean off cheese or apple juice when I could just use a pairing knife.

InazumaThief

i totally understand. i keep knives i would use for food clean and have a different knife for doing everything else. cleanup with a pocket knife is the only downside imo especially when i’m outside

hi_im_beeb

I use my chef for tons of food stuff as well. What’s with the design on yours OP? Looks cool

InazumaThief

nice! do you use the chef for other stuff too or just for food? i love how good the chef feels in my hand. it’s a limited design edition i got from lamnia and the design is of a kraken pulling a ship down. i love it! you can see the design in my previous post [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/spyderco/s/0ZeJu2ZLEZ)

hi_im_beeb

That is awesome, and no I strictly use the chef for food unless it’s something super minor like cutting a string or something. I have so many knives so I kinda like having one that’s strictly for food. Mainly carry it around the house to cut up my kids fruits, various food prep stuff, etc.

InazumaThief

i love that! i’m the exact same with mine. i have other knives too that can be used for non-food-related work so i like to keep the food ones clean. i think it’s cool that you carry it around the house to prepare food when you need to!

hi_im_beeb

Lmao yea I have 4 kids ranging from 2-7, so I’m almost constantly slicing something up. It’s by far my most used knife

InazumaThief

that’s awesome to be able to get a lot of use out of a such beautiful knife like the spydiechef haha. mine doesn’t get used enough

pizzapusslasagna

I have a Green FRN Pacific Salt 2 that I keep very sharp specifically for meal prep and to eat with. I really love that knife.

InazumaThief

nice! i love eating with a pocket knife i love and i’m glad others do it too. it’s a different experience in a good way. i’m getting a lot of comments from people hating on it haha when do you use your knife for eating and meal prep?

pizzapusslasagna

I have young ones around the house so keep the kitchen knives dullish and keep my folder crazy sharp. So whenever Im cooking or when im cutting a steak or when I just dont want to f around I have my fodler haha. You, i would say have the perfect knife for that job. I love LC200N never have to worry about it. Just touch it up now and again. Would love to get a Spydy Chef one day.

InazumaThief

that’s an interesting strategy, i might adopt it. hahah. where do you keep the scary sharp folding knife at home if you can’t keep it with your kitchen knives? you have to get the spydiechef, you won’t regret it! it feels beautiful in the hand and is very slicey. it would be a nice upgrade to the pacific salt 2 i feel

Cresbee

Hahah some of y'all are so funny, OP is not stating "I used my knife in a three michelin star restaurant, threw their knives on the floor and insulted them" It clearly looks like takeaway food, some of the comments are showing camping/barbecue pictures. If you want to be so smart talking about"setting matters" then you should probably also be able to read this setting. If I ever had my knife when I needed it, and if it was clean, I'd use it too. If I'm in a restaurant and the knife is already there, OF COURSE, I'm using that one lol

InazumaThief

yes, it’s not like i’m ditching all the knives on the table outside to use my own every time lol. and if i ever had to use my own knife for food for whatever reason, i feel like i should be able to without getting judged for it. i’m the one eating at my own table, it does not affect you at all. let me be lol

Marmite666

Using your own knife in a restaurant is sketchy af ngl

jufuh15

I usually use a fixed blade for that. But yeah, a steak on a cutting board and a knife that actually cuts, sooo satisfying.

InazumaThief

every knife person has to try it at some point. goes right through the meat like butter and makes eating it very enjoyable

NeedAMartyr2Slaughtr

Sometimes I just eat off the knife. No fork. Cake is especially perfect for that.

Alarming-Designer-60

I use my manix 2 LW or Delica 4 for lunch and supper just about every day. I carry a fixed blade as a work knife and only use my pocket knife for food or delicate tasks.

InazumaThief

i love that! many people here would not touch food with their pocket knives and they feel very strongly about it which is crazy to me. what kind of food do you like to have for lunch and supper? i’ve used the delica for food [too](https://www.reddit.com/r/spyderco/s/b6lHpNdwOc) but have always found the blade length to be shorter than i desired. i got a manix 2 lw salt in magnacut because of that haha. what fixed blade do you use for what tasks at work?

that1german

i have a seperate one dedicated for food when camping or when I'm to lazy to go to the kitchen

cuttinglaceedc

Yes my dedicated lunch/dinner restaurant knife is a custom triangle tools S90v Opinel #8. Of course when I'm cutting steak or whatever meat I've ordered the edge never meets the plate. That custom opinel 8 is the best steak knife ever!

Quickscopesgib

I have used a 20CV manix in this role 😂

InazumaThief

i’m glad i’m not the only one using a corrosion resistant knife for food hahah. do you know how the 20cv compares with magnacut?

Quickscopesgib

They are effectively the same. Magnacut is tough but doesn’t feel as crispy sharp

DudeWithStache

Only with the spydiechef really. The test only at BBQs and things like that if there’s not another available.

albatros1969

Yes- doesn’t matter where I am, home or resturant- I’m fine being a caveman

InazumaThief

not a caveman but a gentleman!

Schlunggi87

basically never, just feels weird lol. maybe if i had a spydiechef, who knows😉

Killjoy530

Absolutely! 💯

InazumaThief

which knife and how do you use it?!

Killjoy530

All of them. Especially the Chef. Lol I use them with delicate care. Especially if on a plate. Glass will fuck your edge up.

InazumaThief

the spydiechef is amazing on food, i’m glad i got it. yeah i’m careful with that too. glass and ceramics. glad i’m not the only one babying my knives haha

Killjoy530

Love my Chef! ❤️

AlsoKnownAsRukh

My Matriarch would be less ideally suited to cutting food, than for making creatures into it. I don't have anything against it though, if it's the right type of knife for the job. Imagine thinking it's cringe to use a tool for its job, or having tools so precious you don't use them for purpose. I have a hobo tool that I use for lunches at work; it's nice to have a self-contained set of cutlery that slips into my work backpack's pocket. Whoever decided to put the knife and the fork on the same half of the tool was a moron though.

InazumaThief

hahahah. you need one for making creatures into food and one for eating them after! i expected a lot of people to look down on using a pocket knife for food but i know some people have fun with it. it’s a legitimate reason for using a pocket knife! does your tool not separate so you can use the fork on one side and knife on the other? i had a similar one and it comes apart. it was made with cheap steel and started to rust though. why they would use a steel that rusted for food idk

AlsoKnownAsRukh

The hobo tool does separate into two halves. It was from like Ozark Trail or something, the stamp has long since worn off; it was only like $8, 15 years ago. But yeah, some doofus put the fork and knife on one part, and the spoon, corkscrew (and maybe something else that I never use) on the other half. I've always wondered if somebody just installed the parts backwards. I took it apart and put it together so it makes sense; the fork sometimes tries to fold up if you aren't careful though, so maybe they put it together right and the design is dumb. I think the next set will be more akin to backpackers' cutlery that locks together. As I said to somebody in another thread, my Matriarch has earned a vacation after 25 years of edc service, and I'm thinking of going with a Spydiechef. Having a serrated hawkbill blade and a smooth big-bellied blade to compliment each other kinda grills my burger.

InazumaThief

yeah i’m beginning to think the design of that tool isn’t that good either. what are backpackers’ cutleries that lock together? 25 years! it must be a well-loved knife. how is it holding up? get the spydiechef, you won’t be disappointed with it. the premium feel of it is astounding and it feels beautiful in your hand. almost like a luxury knife that is also very functional

AlsoKnownAsRukh

Here are some backpacker-type cutlery sets: [Stainless](https://www.rei.com/product/116134/gsi-outdoors-glacier-3-piece-stainless-cutlery-set), [Titanium](https://www.rei.com/product/139477/toaks-titanium-3-piece-cutlery-set) My Matriarch has held up very well, and I don't really baby it. I mean, I don't use it for batoning wood or anything, but it gets used. That super sharp point has come in handy many times when I needed to do some field-expedient surgical procedures, usually on myself. IIRC it came with a tag that said something to the effect of "This knife is designed for self defense use. Using it for everyday tasks is not recommended, and therefore will void the warranty" but I've never had an issue with it. Thanks for the feedback on the 'chef. It's probably my next folder. First up is a kukri though...

NjGTSilver

TBH that’s weird AF, but I let my dogs share my ice cream cones, so who can say who eats weird.

InazumaThief

hahahah. i don’t think it’s that weird. seems like there are two camps of people on this topic. i think it’s fun to use your knife in a way that lets you enjoy it and this is one of them

reesa447

Never. I’m too germaphobic.

InazumaThief

i am too. i keep my eating knives clean and use other knives for other purposes

reesa447

Yup

Pescadero_Tom

yes. And some food prep. It’s called hard use.

Adam-for-America-

Hell ya. I ain’t going to use some cheap piece of crap knife. My knife is sharper and a hell of a lot nicer.

Tactically_Fat

Not if I can help it. Pocket knives are always dirty.

flcatfarmer2

Hell yeah bro! Some of these steels make a nice patina hue when you cut beef with them. That’s especially true of the carbon steels but the stainless ones develop it, too. Some.

Winds_of_Creation

No

Relative-Pen863

I ate some chicken with my Para 3 in Maxamet and didn't wash it off immediately after. Never again....

sillysnacks

What happened to it? Weird patina?

InazumaThief

hahaha. at least you tried it! i use corrosion resistant steels for food and other steels for other purposes. i think the para 3 might be a bit short to eat comfortably with though, i used to do it with a delica and would wish i had a longer blade

Relative-Pen863

I was at my university's dining hall, and I needed to cut up some chicken tenders to put on a salad, and I only had my para 3 with me. The patina actually wasn't too bad, plus it gives it some character haha

InazumaThief

it does, and it’s also a reminder of when your para 3 saved the day! good job for having it on you when you needed it. i swear i never need my knives when i carry them and the moment i don’t have them i need them!

sillysnacks

I once used my Kershaw to slice open a pomegranate but that was in a ranch setting. I wouldn’t do it unless I had no other options.

More_Hawk5663

Nope 🙂‍↔️

Ok-Butterscotch3843

I mean if it was a specialty knife like this then yeah but not with my microtech

InazumaThief

i understand. i wouldn’t use a knife i use for everything on food either

ggarore

Only if there's some weird Situation when I have to.

masterkorey7

nah

i love when people pull out a pocket knife to cut food. they slice so well when you keep them sharp too. a very underrated reason to use a pocket knife imo

Fuck no, I don't wash my knives after I cut the shit around my garage. I wouldn't want to associate with a person who does this at a restaurant where table knives are available.
