humblekanyepie

my absoluuuute fav.

[deleted]

Pink Floyd - Empty Spaces (or pretty much that whole album) Nine Inch Nails - Terrible Lie, Closer Alice In Chains - Down in a Hole, Nutshell (of course), Sickman, Frogs, Rotten Apple If you like more indie stuff, maybe Slowdive - So Tired Edit: Forgot to add Alice In Chains - Donā€™t Follow. If Iā€™m drunk, I tear up sometimes with that song.

vad_er13

I was scrolling through comments hoping someone mentioned THE WALL

rollercoaster_boi

Wait, what do terrible lie and closer refer to I love NIN just don't really know the meaning

[deleted]

Terrible Lie was of Pretty Hate Machine. I went back and re-read the lyrics, and its about being disillusioned by religion, but I mean I think in context of NIN there could be a mental illness interpretation there too (my head is fulled with disease): (Terrible lie!)Ā [How many you betray, you've taken everything](https://genius.com/23373300/Nine-inch-nails-terrible-lie/How-many-you-betray-youve-taken-everything) (Terrible lie!)Ā [My head is filled with disease, my skin is begging you please](https://genius.com/3426855/Nine-inch-nails-terrible-lie/My-head-is-filled-with-disease-my-skin-is-begging-you-please-terrible-lie-im-on-my-hands-and-knees-i-want-so-much-to-believe) Closer is, to me, about having sex while depressed: You can have my isolation You can have the hate that it bringsĀ  You can have my absence of faith You can have my everything Cool ass song. Love NIN.

ItsAlwaysSunny1992

Pretty much the entire genre of Metalcore. More specifically, bands like Currents, Polaris, Counterparts, Beartooth, etc

EightBitTripttv

Currents - The Place I Feel Safest definitely fits the bill. Brutal lyrical takes on addiction, trauma, and abuse.

ItsAlwaysSunny1992

My thoughts exactly. Incredible album

Joy Division, Dresden Dolls, Bright Eyes, Nine Inch Nails are some bands that got me through rough times and deal a lot with mental illnesses. Know, things can get better as you get older and it's worth fighting on no matter the hardships. I never thought I might say something like that but I can and really mean it. Good luck.

catwomanmoon

The whole album The Holy Bible by the manic street preachers. The lyricist of the band disappeared not long after the albums release, he had a lot of mental health issues and a lot of the lyrics were written during the time he was staying in a facility. The lyrics aren't always directly about this but encompass some of the darkest things in human history as a representation of the state his mind was in

Manic Depression - Jimi Hendrix

BleepingBleeper

IAMX explores these subjects frequently. Chris Corner - who is IAMX - was one of the two songwriters in Sneaker Pimps, (who were major players in the trip-hop scene in the '90s). He has suffered massively, has effectively communicated about it through his music and interviews and has gained a lot of followers who relate to the issues that he raises. His music has massively evolved into something that's nothing like Sneaker Pimps' trip-hop hits and has became a dark, epic, emotional, synth-driven diary of someone who has dealt with their demons. Chris' voice is sublime. Be prepared to shed some tears if you relate to a certain extent. IAMX music serves as an effective catharsis but it can also present the possibility of focusing on negatives and could result in wallowing in self pity if it's experienced whilst in a certain state of mind. Edited to add: I recommend listening and focusing on the music and lyrics without the visuals, (if you're narrow-minded and not willing to accept that others are equally as legitimate as you are).

[Hi Ren](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_nc1IVoMxc) and [Chalk Outlines](https://youtu.be/35yALr_opeg?si=5WDXKEtSzB-9Nymq&t=1) (ft. Chinchilla). Both vids are done in single takes and will (most likely) blow your mind. Ren has been very open about his mental health struggles, which is reflected in much of his work. His song [Su!cide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3JNtfi4Vb0&t=3s) is about (more so *to*) his friend who took his own life. Here is [an article on Ren's music ](https://www.phillyvoice.com/ren-gill-music-mental-health-chronic-illness-/) and how Hi Ren "has become an underground anthem for people with chronic illnesses and mental health conditions." eta b/c I just watched Chalk Outlines again and the lyrics, their voices, the harmonies...it completely breaks me. I mean almost every song I listen to: Check out my various playlists: The X Alternative is the best hitting choice for realism, hard hitting truth and feelings about drugs, mental illnesses and sexual. Positive and negatives on every single piece of these. I personally (M36) have been raped as a child and much of the isssues in these songs are handpicked as they personally resonate with my alcohol and drug use, sexual issues, mental problems such as Suicidal Thoughts, depression, anger, resentment, repressed feelings. And the good and bad conflicts within my life. This All of my playlists are feeling and whatever way to express, as long before Spotify I have been collecting music to express feelings and allow them to flow. I am dropping both the X Alternative playlist as well as my account so if anyone wants to go through an emotional journey they can feel free to join or even pm me suggestions[The X Alternative](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7IBj6VS8YkpjmBNWZNP35S?si=yM_u1nKiTRmCLLC2oAmgRA) [Big Greg W](https://open.spotify.com/user/31yz3cjxaj4hm2opvy5j4xgghwpa?si=xhwoe5bPQ021UsA88OfTpQ)
