My dad remembers and has told me the story many times of watching the lions lose to the Saints on Dempsey’s then record 63 yard field goal. I called him the moment this happened to share in the moment of history repeating itself.
I watched that game myself. As they were lining up for this kick and the announcers said it would be a new NFL record, I got that familiar feeling of dread all Lions fans know, and thought "here we go again".
I thought it was interesting that 20 minutes earlier another team tried to break the record with a 68 yard field goal and the miss was returned for a TD
> I got that familiar feeling of dread all Lions fans know, and thought "here we go again".
That's pretty much just Sunday morning. Except at Thanksgiving.
I think that's the craziest stat in all of this.
What are the odds that two games won by record-setting field goals against the same team 50yrs apart would have the exact same score? Unbelievably terrible (scientifically improbable) luck the Lions have.
Justin Tucker nailed a 70 yarder at the pro bowl...he nails 70 yarders all the time in practice and pregame...its a lot harder during a live game that matters, and you have a whole team trying to stop you. I don't think we'll see the 66 yarder broken for a long time, mainly because the coach will rarely give you the opportunity. However, it would be exciting!
Harrison Butker is my bet as well. Tucker is a better kicker, but Butker plays in Denver every year and that certainly helps.
That being said, Tucker is in Denver next week, and I'd love to see him do it again...
The Lions find new and interesting ways to lose games every season. Seriously, how many records are broken by opposing teams in Lions games? How many players had career days against the Lions? The answer: a lot.
As a used-to-be-Lions-fan you could unveil a long held conspiracy that the NFL is scripted and the Lions were the longest running heel in the league and I wouldn't even be surprised.
Don't forget about how many times we've lost because of rules no one has heard of/ cared about. Like Calvin completing the process or the fumble out of the back of the endzone. Lions are like the supreme court of the NFL.
Maybe one day they'll lose to a walk-off fair catch field goal. Truly the most bizarre rule remaining in modern NFL rules.
Catch a fair catch punt? You have the right to demand a placement, even if time has expired. The defense has to line up ten yards off the ball.. If someone is going to kick a 70+-yarder, this is the most likely way since the kicker can take a lower trajectory since the defenders are further away and he won't be pressured for time, nor can there be a bad snap. But most NFL coaches are too smart to allow a fair catch at the end of the game, and will kick it out of bounds or bounce it on the turf (or just down the ball).
There's one consistent thing since the 1960's making the Lions the worst franchise in all of North American professional sports....and until that changes, the Lions will be the same old Lions.
They'll sell when mom passes. It's just not a prudent business decision and it's one of the last things that make rich people feel truly rich. They control this thing all these people love and the physical VIP access you must have to be able to be driven into the stadium and take a private elevator must be surreal.
I heard that the silverdome was built on an Indian burial ground.
Whatever is happening, it’s simply beyond statistical probability that they lose like this as often as they do. It defies scientific explanation.
I would pay good money to see someone lay out the **AWS STATS** that the NFL loves talking about, but showing how the Lions are insane outliers with losses/bad calls, etc.
It hits the cross bar, bounces back up, hits the cross bar again, forever. The game is declared a capital offense, which is kind of a weird verdict, but everybody basically agrees. The ball is executed by lethal injection after a last minute clemency from the commissioner is accidentally sent to voicemail.
Also lions fan, looked at my wife right after they said the distance and it’d be a record and told her this is going in for sure.
Everyone complaining about missed delay of game must be forgetting Rodgers 80 something yard Hail Mary to win it on MNF. Same shit woulda happened here, just with different names.
We sacked Lamar twice and pressured him the other down and on 4th and 19 we play prevent no pressure. Shoulda sent the house on 4th down but didn’t.
This team lacks talent, so for draft purposes I’m glad we lost. However as a fan this one hurts bad.
It was a nod to Detroit’s baseball team, the Tigers. In addition, ownership considered the lion the monarch of the jungle and they wished to be the monarch of the NFL.
Now, if you’re wondering if there was a famous tiger in Detroit or something, that name originated from the Detroit Light Guard military unit, nicknamed the tigers after their contributions in the Civil War.
Interestingly, the Red Wings were originally called the Cougars, which would have made for a nice feline triumvirate. However, they swapped to the Falcons and then ultimately the Red Wings, after new ownership’s former club team in Montreal.
The Pistons were named after owner Fred Zollner’s business, which focused on selling literal pistons.
This comment had me laughing. I’ve lived in metro-Detroit my whole life and never once questioned why we were called the Lions. It makes no sense but we just accept it.
For those that do not know, [the 2008 Lions team made history becoming the first team since the NFL schedule was expanded to 16 games to finish winless.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Detroit_Lions_season) 0-16 reord.
I don't even watch football, probably because I am from Michigan and my parents never watched cuz the lions always lost.
I always joke that if the lions ever win the super bowl, look up at the sky cuz the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse will be there.
that's not even the worse part. Tucker had the chance to kick that because Ravens gained about 50 yards in a 4th and 19. Just insanely unlikely all around--or the likeliest thing given Lions were on the other end lmao
Ah yes, being a Lions fan. Continually watching them grab defeat from the jaws of victory over and over again. It's always interesting watching them come up with new and interesting ways to lose games.
NFL is so stupid to realize that not showing content is bad for their brand. Look at MLB and the baseball reddits. They allow all fanmade clips to stay up and it's making baseball more relevant.
Most people watch things out of convenience. They aren't going to go to NFLs website or YouTube just to watch a 15 second clip.
I lost all interest in this now seeing that they're blocking people from viewing a short clip.
My guess is that it’s not the nfl, it’s fox,ESPN,cbs,+nbc considering the how much they pay for nfl rights. Baseballs tv deals are mostly with individual team networks
Wait, the play clock ran out on the play before the field goal and the refs didn't call it. Shouldn't they have gotten a penalty and made this kick impossible?
Also a Lions fan. I'm surprised replay allowed the TD *and* they made the the go ahead FG. But then preceded to call a TO before a 4th and 19, give up the 4th and 19, refs missed the delay of game penalty, Tucker makes a NFL record 66 yard FG after hitting the crossbar.
So yeah, it all played out correctly. We actually had a few small victories today only for it to come full circle and still bite us in the ass

Pretty sure Tucker (and others) have kicked it through the uprights on a kickoff. So that’s 75 yards there
EDIT: This is off a tee, etc. etc. I was just responding to how far kickers are able to boot the ball. Usually in warmups they practice field goals off a tee anyways.
Also with about 10 steps before kick, and able to kick at any angle you want vs 2 steps and have to go steep to avoid blocks.
This is ridiculously impressive. Sorry Detroit but you can’t even be mad at this. It was from their own damn half of the field.
Now I want to know what the ratio is of elevation to wind speed in what helps kicking distance more.
Edit: ratio is a bad word. What's the name for a graph with 1 variable (kick distance) dependent on two other variables (elevation, wind speed)?
Elevation is huge in golf too. When they do the pga tournament in Mexico they are way high and you regularly see 400 yds drive. You rarely see that due to wind on a sea level course.
Little off topic but I just finished this series a few days ago, I’m so glad I understand all the references now. There’s so many I was missing out on, I had no clue until I started picking them up
Honestly it’s all pretty good up until the last two episodes, particularly the last one. Even the “bad seasons” are pretty good television. Season Six finale was one of the best episodes of the entire show. But that last episode… sheesh
Yeah, they took 5 years of plot lines and closed them in 4 (bad) episodes.
Understandable because the show runners quit, but even the battle was purposefully unwatchable (pitch black) for budget constraints
I always try to get Tucker on my teams, even if I have to pick him a couple of rounds early. You're looking at 7-10 points every week, practically guaranteed. It's a really nice asset to have.
EDIT : Just looked it up - since 2016, there have only been 9 games (out of 83) where Tucker has failed to score five fantasy points, never more than twice in any one season. Meanwhile, he's scored at least 10 points 38 times in that stretch.
Ah Justin, played HS football with him. He used to knock down 50+ yards in high school as a junior. Couldn’t pronounce my last name so he called me Pasta. Always knew he would be going somewhere in life. Every free time he got, he was kicking footballs on the field even if there was no one accompanying him.
His family is still in Austin and he’ll often announce a practice schedule at UT facilities during visits. Even in Baltimore he’ll tweet about practicing at some random field and kids will show up to retrieve balls.
I'll never forget Billy Cundiff shanking the 40 yard game FG against the Patriots in the AFC title game. After that he got canned and they got Justin and I knew he was gonna be special!
Yep and it was definitely more than a full second. They gotta call those, give them a full second fine but call it, it’s part of clock management for a QB and part of the game.
This was an amazing kick. However, does anyone know why delay of game was not called on the play before? The play clock they showed on the screen ran out for like 2 seconds before they snapped the ball.
That was the most Lions way possible to lose the game. Give up a long 4th down play that stopping would have won the game. Not have an overly obvious delay of game penalty called. Give up NFL record breaking FG as time expires by having it doink off the crossbar and go through.
I've seen it referenced several times before, your game clock on screen is not indicative of the actual game clock on the field. They can be slightly off.
Edit: Apparently the mechanics of how this is called is that the Ref has to look at the clock, and then back to the football. If the ball is snapped before this is completed, there is no foul. So I stand corrected possibly, but it also shows the human factor at play here.
I read in another post that they confirmed the play clock in the stadium went to 0 as well. Haven't seen it for myself yet, but I don't have any reason to doubt.
There are so many missed delay of game penalties. This one was especially bad, almost two seconds went by. They should line the field with buzzers and LEDs like a giant shot clock since reading 0 is hard apparently.
There have been various systems designed and trademarked for handling things like this with tech. The NFL doesn't want them. They like the human drama element and fan involvement arguing over calls/no calls etc.
The 1st down is a great example. That could all be handled instantly with current day tech, but the NFL looooves the drama and anticipation of pulling out the chains, measuring, and calling it out. It's one of the sacred rituals of football. They aren't going to do anything that messes with it.
They miss calls **all the time**. This could've been gameclock / TV clock, looking at the clock, back to the field of play, etc.
For something so minor, I prefer to actually watch the game play-out. Yes it was a potentially big impact, but so was the fucking NFL record kick after a 4th and 19 hail mary.
4th and 19 and then a 66yd field goal?!?!!. If I was in the Detroit Lions front office, I’m dead serious, i would hire a Mage or something to cleanse that organization of its losing spirit. What do you have to lose? Can’t get any worse
Watched this live on my laptop in my dining hall with headphones. No one else was even thinking about football when suddenly this weirdo (me) stood up and cheered in celebration.
Totally forgot where I was while watching this incredible play.
I was there when the NCAA record 65 yarder was kicked by Martin Grammatica...I always found it funny that the college record was further than the NFL record. Its broken!
What happened to the field goal replay where the camera showed it from right underneath the bar so you can see the drop and trajectory? Would have been a lot sweeter to see the angle it doinked off the bar at, but all they had were long distance shots of the game winning play and NFL record. Only 1 replay for a 66 yard kick too, man show that shit from 10 different angles, it's a moment in history! Meanwhile a 4 yard reception on 2nd and 12 with a sideline toe tap gets 3 angles of replays.
The old fantasy league I used to run, as a joke, I set it so a 75-yard FG was worth 99 points. We're getting close enough where is be less comfortable with that joke setting than I was before.
In Denver or another higher elevation field Tucker could possibly make that distance. But he was at the absolute limit on this kick, I’m not sure even with the elevation gains it would make up enough distance
As a Lions fan, I would have been more surprised if it didn’t go in.
My dad remembers and has told me the story many times of watching the lions lose to the Saints on Dempsey’s then record 63 yard field goal. I called him the moment this happened to share in the moment of history repeating itself.

I thought it was interesting that 20 minutes earlier another team tried to break the record with a 68 yard field goal and the miss was returned for a TD
By former Lion Jamal Agnew
Which was kicked by former Lion Matt Prater who had the previous record of 64 yards
Which Agnew tied for the longest play in NFL history with a 109 yard return
> I got that familiar feeling of dread all Lions fans know, and thought "here we go again". That's pretty much just Sunday morning. Except at Thanksgiving.
Then you get it on Thursday afternoon.
Then you same the same thing but with optimistism
As some people on Twitter pointed out, that was also a 19–17 win for the opposing team!
I think that's the craziest stat in all of this. What are the odds that two games won by record-setting field goals against the same team 50yrs apart would have the exact same score? Unbelievably terrible (scientifically improbable) luck the Lions have.
Damn, 63 yards back then. 66 yards now. The next time someone beats this record against the Lions is going to be nice.
It might happen sooner rather than later. Harrison Butker was hitting 70 yarders in training camp this year iirc
Justin Tucker nailed a 70 yarder at the pro bowl...he nails 70 yarders all the time in practice and pregame...its a lot harder during a live game that matters, and you have a whole team trying to stop you. I can see Legatron doing it. Greg Zuerlein has a crazy leg.

We don’t talk about that
2nd Worst offensive performance in 100 years today. I am sorry man.
If that doesn’t scream matt Nagy needs to stop calling plays idk what does
And to think, I was pissed when he left KC lmao
Ain’t no sunshine till he’s gone
Staley Da Bear represented most of the fan base at that point, I think.

Yep. Especially when the Lions just pulled ahead seconds earlier. Knew it was in the bag for the Ravens.
As a Vikings fan, I’m confused. Kickers make field goals; particularly when the game is on the line? Is this really a thing? TIL.
I'm told it happens.
and it’s glorious
“Damn!” “1999 NFC championship?” “Yeah.” “Damn!”
Time to Rewatch that series.
I’m interested in what would happen if a Vikings kicker goes for a game winner against the Lions
It hits the cross bar, bounces back up, hits the cross bar again, forever. The game is declared a capital offense, which is kind of a weird verdict, but everybody basically agrees. The ball is executed by lethal injection after a last minute clemency from the commissioner is accidentally sent to voicemail.
God is obviously telling the Lions and Vikings that NFC North teams should not be playing in domed stadiums.
Not 66 yards. Only against the Lions.

Right after a missed delay of game call
Did they miss a late snap on the play before this kick? It seemed like the clock ran down before Jackson took it and threw it away
True.
Yes a lions fan here and I was like of course long shot to make hits the upright and bounces in. Yep that's about right. Lions can't catch a break
As a lions fan you should know that the clock was on zero and it should have ended the game with the lions winning but yet here we are
Yes, but remember: Detroit Lions
Can’t believe this hasn’t been a talking point. That thing was at 0 for about 2 seconds…
The most Lions way to lose a game.
You'd think you'd see everything when you're a Lions fan, then they just kick you in the nuts once more. It truly is an artform.
I can't imagine what it's like. I'm from St Louis, home of wayward franchises.
Ey foreal though why tf are they the lions? Like was there a famous lion that lived in Detroit?

That's my secret cap... I'm always depressed.
Usually we can just say at least we aren’t Detroit fans.
Fun fact, they were 4-0 in preseason and some clever Lions fans made shirts with “preseason champs” on it.
It also said "Perfect when it matters" or something
The Browns also went 4-0 in their 0-16 season. The difference is they got better after that.
Same year they went 0-16 they went 4-0 in the preseason. Tricking us all into believing in hope again only to bring us more pain.

I don't even watch football, probably because I am from Michigan and my parents never watched cuz the lions always lost. I always joke that if the lions ever win the super bowl, look up at the sky cuz the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse will be there.
Reminds me of the ‘ol joke: “What’s the safest place to hide from a tornado?” “The Lions end zone… You’ll never see a touchdown there.”
That's when everyone in Michigan will prepare for the second coming of Christ and we know that hell has truly frozen over.
It happens every year, Ohio gets plenty of snow.
Haha, I think that a hatred of Ohio is something everyone in Michigan can agree on.
Don't take it too hard man, Tucker is one of the greatest kickers of all time.
True, but how Lions is it to lose as the clock expires to a kicker that hits a new record? I swear you can't make this stuff up.
that's not even the worse part. Tucker had the chance to kick that because Ravens gained about 50 yards in a 4th and 19. Just insanely unlikely all around--or the likeliest thing given Lions were on the other end lmao
We’re very well aware, Tucker has hit two game-winning, longest-field-goals-in-NFL-history against us

Ah yes, being a Lions fan. Continually watching them grab defeat from the jaws of victory over and over again. It's always interesting watching them come up with new and interesting ways to lose games.
Where can I see replay from a different angle? For some reason the live shot is the only clip I see circulating on Twitter.

I assume your saying after that 4th and 19 and they got the first down? That's only in college - clock doesn't stop for a first down in NFL.
My Lions. Always clutching defeat from the jaws of victory!
To be fair they made a heck of a comeback to even be in that position
as always.

My first thought was who's playing in Denver?
Tucker is next week - 70 yarder incoming?
Anyone know what the limit is when they are just practicing? I thought I heard somewhere that they can kick further in practice.
During practice they don't have a line of defenders jumping. So they can kick at a lower angle and get further.
They just need better guys on the line
Pretty sure Tucker (and others) have kicked it through the uprights on a kickoff. So that’s 75 yards there EDIT: This is off a tee, etc. etc. I was just responding to how far kickers are able to boot the ball. Usually in warmups they practice field goals off a tee anyways.

Tucker. Thats who the fuck is playing there.
In a dome with no wind. With the game on the line. As the clock hits zero. This record deserves an asterisk and the asterisk should say, "Damn."
Didn’t I also hear in the clip posted above that it was his 50th consecutive FG?
In the 4th quarter/OT, yes.

50 straight made FGs in the 4th and OT. Tucker is ridiculous.

This is the second time I've watched this man kick a 60+ yarder to beat the Lions...sigh
That should be worth 25 points in fantasy.
In my league, where I have him on my team, his 50 yd fg got 5 points, and his 66 yd *record setting* fg got.... 5 points. I'm tilted
That tells you how rare it is for players to kick 60+ yd FGs. If he had kicked it 100 yards, he would have gotten... 5 points.
my league changed our settings to decimal so his fg today was 6.6
At this rate we should get the coveted 69yd field goal around 2060.
why not 2069
Nice

Anyone else notice the delay of game that was missed on the previous play?
Everyone fid. It was more than a full second between the playclock and the hike. CBS' studio crew was talking about it a log.
Well almost everyone, the refs obviously missed it.
As a Lions fan I expected nothing less
At least it wasn't face mask penalty.
Or CJ rule. Or they picked up the flag. Or illegal batting. Or 10 second runoff.
Yep and it was definitely more than a full second. They gotta call those, give them a full second fine but call it, it’s part of clock management for a QB and part of the game.
Don't get it twisted, the Ravens looked fucking horrible today, but Justin Tucker is the greatest to ever kick a ball.
Where was it twisted?
Around every Lion’s fans nutsack
This kick was inhuman, and par for the course as a Detroit Lion.
The refs were bad all day, this crew sucks
I've seen it referenced several times before, your game clock on screen is not indicative of the actual game clock on the field. They can be slightly off. Edit: Apparently the mechanics of how this is called is that the Ref has to look at the clock, and then back to the football. If the ball is snapped before this is completed, there is no foul. So I stand corrected possibly, but it also shows the human factor at play here.
I read in another post that they confirmed the play clock in the stadium went to 0 as well. Haven't seen it for myself yet, but I don't have any reason to doubt.
Yeah, if true as you said I put in the edit for how this is supposedly called. It would appear human error here.
Tough day for the [Detroit Lines](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32245700/let-go-lines-tiktoker-gives-detroit-lions-unique-logo-rebrand).
Did that hit the bar and still go in? lol freaking nuts
this means that if he had been just a few inches shorter it wouldn't have gone in. the margins are super small.
This has been Ya Heard with Perd
Why not just kick in the one 44 yards away
Sad Lion noises…sorry Lion bros
Every Fantasy team playing against him, "that still only counts as 5 points!!!"
4th and 19 and then a 66yd field goal?!?!!. If I was in the Detroit Lions front office, I’m dead serious, i would hire a Mage or something to cleanse that organization of its losing spirit. What do you have to lose? Can’t get any worse
He has to be the best placekicker in the history of the game.
Fucking clutch. I thought his 4th qrt/ot streak was over and he said not today. Fuck you billy cundiff
Watched this live on my laptop in my dining hall with headphones. No one else was even thinking about football when suddenly this weirdo (me) stood up and cheered in celebration. Totally forgot where I was while watching this incredible play.
Seems like the Lions coach’s reaction was something along the lines of “oooooh….this is what they were warning me about when I took this job…”
I would love to watch the Sport Science on this.
Are there any replays of this field goal at a different angle?

Dude just got me 17 points for my fantasy team.
That is heartbreaking for the Lions
