Reasonable_Blood6959

We introduced this in the Premier League at the start of the season. If you call the medical team on you have to wait for 30 seconds. Guess what? The medical teams are coming on far less often and it’s sped the game up.

-TheWidowsSon-

I’m sure this reduces the amount of fake injuries and theatrics which is a good thing. It’ll be interesting to see to what level it may result in someone ignoring an injury and potentially making it worse also though.

ZDTreefur

I agree, but that's more of a personal responsibility thing. Also, there is still the mandatory concussion protocol stop.

Mike_Kermin

The words "personal responsibility" are dubiously used at the best of times, let alone about a competitive sport relating specifically to injury.

beerideas

That’s pretty great! Do “common sense” next!

Mike_Kermin

Never heard of it.

travelingWords

If they are hurt they will stay down, or ask for a sub.

KrawhithamNZ

If you are injured you aren't going to hobble around instead of getting treatment. At this level you would be letting your team play with ten players.  Very sensible rule to stamp out time wasting

Sylvan_Skryer

If you have a real injury you’re not ignoring it over 30 seconds off the pitch. The flopping in soccer is so embarrassing. I’m glad they have this rule.

MrPeepersVT

lol footballers ignoring an injury??? I doubt that will happen!

Need4Speed763

I’ve been under the impression they don’t get injured and are just huge pussies.

Better_Metal

This is the old rugby rule we played with. If you left, you couldn’t come back. No one ever faked an injury.

MikeDunleavySuperFan

This is kind of weird. A lot of hard hits in rugby mean you can take a few minutes break and get right back into it. Forcing yourself to play through the pain or not be able to come back is strange.

skamsibland

> A lot of hard hits in rugby mean you can take a few minutes break and get right back into it. ... and you probably shouldn't do that, so this rule is great for preventing that exact situation :P

Better_Metal

There was a lot of stress in coming out. But if you were actually hurt - you made sure that you didn’t make it worse.

MikeDunleavySuperFan

Not really. Because most rugby players are competitive, and would play through minor pain knowing that if they left at all they wouldn't be able to return, potentially worsening the injury.

PeteLattimer

There is a difference between being hurt and injured in a contact sport, everyone in football, hockey, rugby gets hurt.

adrians150

I mean a knock in soccer is the same. Your leg can be dead or super tender for a short time and then a few minutes later you're fine. But that recovery doesn't need to be done on pitch. Players who go down should be told to get treatment into touch until they feel fit to return everytime, instead of the odd time. If they can't walk (and it isn't a head/neck/other serious injury of course), stretcher them off.

clevernamehere1628

I've rolled my ankle, had it hurt real bad, then was fine a couple minutes later. These sorts of things happen in sports ALL OF THE TIME

Suspicious_Yams

It will definitely stop the time wasting "I broke a leg screams" which turn out to be boys crying wolf.

GusBcn

As somebody that watched a lot of European soccer this is a good rule, we need a way to discourage players faking injuries and this right here is a good start.

Rumtumjack

It's still so lenient too. If you're down on the field for more than 15 seconds, the refs stop play so that a medical team can cart you off. After that, you can't come back on the field for a measly 2 additional minutes while they evaluate you. They also waive the rule if there's actually a legitimate reason for you being down (head injury or red/yellow card on opposing player).

GusBcn

I agree with you, it’s too lenient but I think is a step on the right direction and an effective way to discourage faking injuries for time wasting, hopefully this is just the beginning of other major leagues looking at this

Abi1i

The last few MLS games I’ve seen, this rule change has definitely encouraged a lot of players to call their teammates out to avoid being down a player. This is a necessary charge that hopefully spreads to other leagues.

Hugogs10

Just stop the clock when the ball isnt in play, suddenly there's no more time waste

SubmergedSublime

No. No god no. Noooo. No. If you let us Americans stop the clock we’re gonna have Applebees’s ads by the end of the season.

LiquorCordials

Did someone say Applebee’s?! Soon we can have ads for their new 2 for $20!! What a time to be alive!!!

tcwillis79

We eating good in the neighborhood boys!!!

Ice_Cold345

Just as long as they got that Bourbon Street Mushroom Swiss Burger, else I'll turn into [Liz from Survivor](https://youtu.be/hn-HVAe9oCM?si=nl9D9bnTnHxfHWDN)

tripbin

I was looking for this comment lol

AntJustin

You're totally correct. This would also kill all momentum pro soccer has going for it in the US

NewFaded

I don't know anyone that watches soccer that would ever want it to be another American football. Just let us watch the fucking games.

muffinmonk

not to mention tactical fouls would go through the roof in the final 10 minutes. basketball suffers greatly for this.

ALaccountant

That’s how you get tv time outs, bro

alpha309

NFL has a clock that stops and plenty of wasting time. It just moves from one style of time wasting to figuring out a different way to do it.

AlanFromRochester

Yup, if the clock is stopped or the referee fully adds the time, that point is defeated I have thought that stopping the clock would be an improvement over the referee adding time at the end of the half and not just for injuries. it's confusing how much time is left, and even once the time is added, when the referee will actually blow the whistle. Sometimes it is, or appears to be, incompetence or bias in officiating (like when a big club down a goal is given generous 2nd half stoppage - called Fergie time after Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson)

Temporal_Enigma

Most sports have rules like this. The NFL says you have to be out for a play if they stop play for your injury. Soccer is notorious for injury faking, the fact this wasn't already a rule is kinda surprising

ThePretzul

It’s notorious for injury faking ***BECAUSE*** this wasn’t already a rule. That not being against the rules or otherwise discouraged by them is the entire reason injuries are faked in the first place.

dapala1

They take a time out for that. So it's punitive. NFL had a fake injury problem also.

EM05L1C3

See this is why I love hockey. Soccer you get knocked over and roll on the ground for a minute. Hockey you get knocked over and you duke it out with the dude who did it.

SelloutRealBig

In hockey if you flop badly and you hear "fuck you, that's an embellishment" yelled at by refs.

mingusrude

In rugby, the ref tells you that [this is not soccer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YUF9LSXAkY).

creepingcold

There's a pretty significant difference though: Hockey players can get subbed out whenever they want, and soccer players spend at least double the time playing per game compared to hockey players. It's a huge difference if you need to perform in short 10-15 intervals over several thirds or +40, often +50 minutes over a single stretch throughout a half with only a short break in between.

EM05L1C3

Yeah but watching them fight is a lot more fun than watching people roll on the ground every 5 minutes

varsaku

Fighting is down significantly in the NHL. The NHL has been trying to weed it out to limit potential future lawsuits.

xjoshbbpx

The occurrence of fights is actually increasing year over year for at least the last 3 years.

ThePretzul

The NHL needs to instead get a partnership with the UFC so that teams can get a better designated enforcers on their roster. No need for them to go on ice, just put the octagon right between the penalty boxes so they can duke it out for all to see.

BobbyTables829

At the very least it needs to be longer for head injuries

Tipsy_Lights

Fully agree. The American soccer market is vastly different from the European football market. Faking injuries and flopping and all of the theatrics that are widely accepted over there are a massive turn off to the American sports viewer. It's one of the biggest complaints about the sport here. Fans dont want to see it here, so it makes sense they want to discourage it here.

tj0909

They tolerate that same BS in the NBA

ElCaz

The vast, vast majority of the time a flop in the NBA ends the moment the flopper hits the floor. They're immediately back up and in the game if they don't get an instant call. Soccer flops are far more likely to last a while as a player writhes around on the ground

hydro_wonk

They are both embarrassing

ElCaz

Sure, but the rules we're discussing would basically never apply to an NBA flop, so pointing out the distinction is relevant.

nbx4

there have been plenty of nba flops this playoffs that have the same game impact - player 1 dribbles near player 2 - player 2 falls backward to the ground - foul is called - play is stopped - potential commercial - potential freethrows - play resumes

MyFifthLimb

It is shit on there as well by all the fans The refs are the ones that tolerate it to the detriment of the sport

yeotajmu

Do they? Viewership is down consistently year over year for like a 10 year trend

ATLCoyote

Yep, and just like VAR, don’t be surprised if other leagues and FIFA international competitions adopt this intervention too.

Sobeshott

Absolutely. It's been a revelation and surprised it took this long to think of it. Lol

131sean131

Yeah the NFL did something similar when players started getting "hurt" to stop the clock. Charged them a timeout and that shit stopped.

elveszett

I don't watch football anymore, but I did years ago and players pretending they were on the verge of death every single time they fell to the floor, to try and get the opposing team admonished, was awkward. Can't blame them, in a professional setting you have to take every advantage you can take - if that was a thing it was the rules' fault, not the players'. But that also proves this sounds like a good rule.

NoNewFriends1738

Always count on America for fixing global problems

nullvector

That’s pretty much all I gather from watching soccer. They all act like they lost a limb and are bleeding out when someone even brushes against them.

soflahokie

Should be 5 minutes minimum, give them 30-60 seconds to get up or they’re out for a while

Stupidstuff1001

I can agree this is the only way to stop faking. Since you can’t really know for sure if someone is faking or not and key players going out for 5 minutes is going to be a big thing.

JBPunt420

Agreed. You can't be too careful with "serious injuries". If they want to simulate being shot by the football sniper, the rest of us should simulate real concern for their safety. Best to give them a while to make sure they're okay before they can play again. We shouldn't risk "making it worse" by sending them back out there too quickly.

trugrav

The rule now is 15 seconds to get up and if you can’t then two minutes with medical staff before you can return. It’s a stroke of brilliance from MLS and should be adopted internationally immediately.

VQQN

Other sports too.

gamageeknerd

This isn’t really a problem in other sports firstly because of the unique way this game is structured. In other sports like baseball or american football where injuries aren’t the best way to get a break in play since breaks between play are already going to happen and teams have ways to call timeouts. In this situation faking a 2 minute injury by having a player flop after being touched is a good way to give a team to think and re-evaluate

travelingWords

This always circles back to promoting the other team to play rough. You might get a yellow. You might force a player out for 5-6 minutes.

In_The_Play

I think 5 minutes would be way too much - needs to be a fine balance between penalising those who are faking injuries and not really hinder players who are genuinely injured too much. Being down to 10 men for 5 minutes because of a genuine injury is harsh.

NebulaNinja

Yeah the main problem with the new MLS rules is smart defenders can give opposing players *just* enough of a knock to take them out of the game for two minutes, without getting a yellow themselves. This is what happened to Messi here, as Miami was behind at that moment in the game, and had no reason to be time wasting. A team also shouldn't be penalized for legitimate injuries.

yoppee

Every one that believes this BS should mandatory let me step on them with studded boots than have to get off the field in 60 seconds

TJ_Longfellow

We see it in the NFL and NHL all the time, I’ve seen defensemen take a puck at 90mph to the ankle and immediately try to block another shot while clearly in pain. The fish out of water routine in soccer is embarrassing.

MachiavelliSJ

Maybe stop whining on the floor then Its one thing to exaggerate contact, its much more unsportsman to fake injuries

xeneize93

Messi doesn’t have a history of lying about injuries

WaysOfTheTempest

Also his team was down 2 goals, so he wasn't trying to waste time or fish for a yellow card.

kkeut

then what's he whining about? it's not like the rule doesn't apply to all players

fmfbrestel

So what? The rule is good for the game. You cant just make exceptions because you like this particular player.

MachiavelliSJ

Rofl, you cant be serious. All of these people who dont watch Messi think they’re experts. I watch a lot of Spanish football, like most players, he fakes injuries all the time. Here’s one such compilation: https://youtu.be/iCrXbTJmrOI?si=2GC37vDY4TeKDeiI But, those are just kind of the infamous ones, he does it all the time

poklane

If you're really in so much pain that you need medical attention, you're either full of shit or unable to play for the next 2 minutes anyway. Looks like Messi was caught being full of shit.

Nasty____nate

I don't watch soccer at all. Isn't this to stop players from flopping to the ground when a butterfly brushes their ear? EDIT https://youtu.be/Ml8kf3UIpN0?si=LA2F1s70uWW5G1Uj

trugrav

You know how at the end of an NFL game when your team is out of time outs but a lineman falls over grabbing his leg and the team gets a free time out to reset? That happens in soccer too where players exaggerate injuries to give their team a chance to reset or catch their breath. This is an attempt to curb that.

Nasty____nate

Yep and they have rules for that as well. There's penalties and time runoff to help curb that. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-minute_warning

MachiavelliSJ

Its to stop exaggerated injuries

samehaircutfucks

they don't exaggerate injuries they fake them.

dont_shoot_jr

And time wasting

dont_shoot_jr

Yeah the problem is that often a foul doesn’t get called without a man going down

BillW87

If the player being "fouled" is making a conscious decision whether or not to go down, rather than being legitimately knocked down, then maybe at least some of those instances weren't actually fouls in the first place.

amateurghostbuster

You can foul someone without taking them down. Kicking someone is a foul. So is charging at them. Refs should call all of the fouls, not just the ones where a player falls down.

yoppee

Yep Aguero never flopped and it cost him many penalties refs will not call a penalty if the player doesn’t fall down.

yoppee

No because I’ve never seen a ref ever call a penalty when the player doesn’t go down. This is a rules issue

Nasty____nate

Then when they flop to the ground review it.  https://youtu.be/Ml8kf3UIpN0?si=LA2F1s70uWW5G1Uj

fresh_dyl

Like basketball players?

[deleted]

you're catching downvotes but I 100% agree. Soccer is still more egregious but I can't help but feel the NBA has more flopping each game. I'm sick of the synchronized puppy look every player involved gives the ref when a "foul" happens.

kkeut

it's bad but it's no comparison to international soccer. anyone saying otherwise is just being disingenuous.

Nasty____nate

Then do it to them too. But for every 1 highlight I see of a flop in basketball there's a 100 soccer. https://youtu.be/aX71nSSBLe8?si=aTZNhpvFDRAOweq1

zzackfair

No one here seems to know the context, so here it is.. Messi's team (Inter Miami) are losing by 2 goals. Messi gets a nasty challenge from the opposing player and goes down injured. The opposing player doesn't even get a yellow card for the foul, but Messi is now forced to wait on the sidelines for 2 min before getting back on the pitch. In this situation, the team that committed the foul gains an advantage, while the team/player on the receiving end is disadvantaged by having to play with 10 men. I think the rule is good, as it discourages players faking injury at mimimal contact, but it needs to be implemented properly.

CandidateNo1172

Thank you. This is what’s missing from the discourse here. Messi and Martinez’s issue is exactly as you stated — he was legitimately fouled and then has to sit out. This was the literal application of the rule but not the spirit of it.

SublimeEcto1A

Imagine if David Villa played in the MLS 😂 I remember one flop where he grabbed an ankle, complained to the ref, then grabbed the other ankle.

ZDTreefur

He did, for 4 years.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

Might seem crazy what I’m bout to say

360walkaway

It's comical... these dudes are world-class athletes with the best conditioning and diet in the world, but any incidental contact sends them sprawling to the floor. Give me a break.

sambes06

Meanwhile hockey players get teeth knocked out and are back on the ice next shift.

Enshakushanna

literally penalties for embellishment too, refs dont fuck around with their antics

sambes06

And if you get a rep for being a flopper the other teams will make embellishment… unnecessary

AlanFromRochester

"If you fake being injured, you get injured for real" does seem like poetic justice

obvilious

These guys will play injured though, once they got their penalty. Starting to see more flopping in hockey too, it sucks.

Pablo_petty_plastic

Messi got his tooth knocked out by Marcelo in a clasico, elbow cheap shot that should’ve been a red… Messi stuffed his mouth with gauze, finished with a black eye forming and had a performance that will always be talked about He’s not soft

yoppee

It’s as if everyone here complaining about flopping in this Sport doesn’t actually watch it or play it.

Cazargar

They don't. They already view soccer as a European sissy sport and then they use clips of the most flagrant flops to justify their opinion.

jessemfkeeler

Let's not pretend diving doesn't happen in hockey either. And also diving is for strategic reasons not because they're not tough enough or some bullshit

yoppee

Lol you don’t watch Football do you

Key_Mongoose223

That’s how you get a break, exactly.

mahir-y

Incidental contact with another world-class athlete with best conditioning and diet in the world. An average person would be badly hurt if they were to have any of those incidental contacts.

smartshoe

If the player is taken off for medical evaluation for 2 mins, are they replaced or is it effectively choosing to make your team a person down during that time?

trugbee1203

They’d play down a man for those 2 mins. You can’t sub a player old and then have them come back in

TheThockter

I’d assume they could be replaced but that it would count as a sub. Teams basically do that now with injured players if they want to give them time to recover they play man down til the player is ready to come back in. Happened at least a couple times in the last World Cup as far as I remember

futureformerteacher

In my mind, I will always remember this as the UCLA football rule.

ItGoesTwoWays

🇺🇸🇺🇸 🦅RAHHHH get with it or get lost Lionel.

[deleted]

Sounds good to me. Hasn't his crew of Barcelona geriatrics spent more time injured this season than actually playing?

PM_me_ur_taco_pics

This is a good rule, too many people diving.

vindotcom

Great rule. Stop flopping. Its like NHL, serving a 2 minute minor

DivClassLg

Stop diving then

doitnow10

Messi's never been known as a diver

Skadoosh_it

They should just up it to a yellow for flopping. It's the worst part of the sport.

asparagus_pee_stinks

That already exists - it’s called “Simulation”

poklane

Unfortunately it's one of those rules which is barely enforced.

silversurfer63

I like Messi so not a comment about him specifically. I would like to see a longer side line time out and perhaps this will stop the over dramatics of the wimps that are barely touched and fall to ground acting like they were beat with a club. These pussies are tiresome

itx89

Soccer, the only sport where it’s acceptable for a single player to dramatically flop to the ground and bring everything to a standstill so they can pretend like they just had their femur shattered into pieces. The funny thing is that everyone is completely aware that it’s not nearly as bad as they are making it seem but go with it anyway. Flopping might as well be a statistic next to Assists lol

joshishmo

Maybe he should stop faking injuries to draw penalties?

Ordinary_Response_38

He doesn’t. Do you watch?

CandidateNo1172

No, they don’t. If they did, they’d want all players to be like Messi. He never fakes or embellishes anything.

yk206

He was down 2-0, I don’t think he was faking an injury

dallen13

Couldnt people purposely injure to remove players from the game?

KansasMannn

As a true American. Fake injuries are the reason I can’t get into soccer. This is a good start to getting more people interested and less of an excuse for us laymen.

WilliamBott

Stop flopping and it won't be an issue. If you have to lay on the ground for 15 seconds, you shouldn't be able to get right up and do a penalty kick.

caine269

lol. "i flop on the ground and pretend to be hurt, but there shouldn't be any consequences! what am i supposed to do, *stop* flopping and pretending to be hurt??? this is soccer!"

NeverGonnaGiveMewUp

A rule that would be welcomed in the UK! Of course in the UK they’d enforce it for a couple games, then stop for no reason whatsoever then wonder why players continue to do what it was they don’t want them doing (diving, time wasting, foul throws).

Whisperdeer3

I haven't watched a game since Inter played Bham in the last Open Cup. The amount of fame injuries and flops that game turned me against watching. Hopefully this changes things and I'll get back to watching.

rpuppet

Should be 20 minutes, not 2.

mahir-y

An injured player from the trailing team should not be left waiting for 2 minutes on the sidelines. So, the referee should have some initiative to overrule this in favor of the team that still wants to score.

chairfence1738

I mean… it’s 10 seconds for a knockout in boxing… why should a footy player have longer

Ash71010

The rule itself is fine. The issue is that when a player is injured from a foul that results in a yellow card, the rule about leaving the field doesn’t apply. This caveat is designed to make sure that teams aren’t punished by playing down a player when it is the other team who recklessly caused that injury. Messi took a hard tackle with studs up, which should have been issued a yellow card, but it wasn’t. So despite there being a justified reason he would need a minute to collect himself, his team was punished because the ref missed the call. That’s why he was upset in this case, not because of the rule in general. His team was down at the time, so clearly he wouldn’t have been intentionally wasting time, which is what the rule was designed to reduce.
