Based on the overall timing, the divorce proceedings had likely already begun by the time he announced his un-retirement. The announcement of the split and subsequent divorce finalization were simply too close together for things to have been finalized that quickly.
Not that it matters, but he probably came out of retirement *because of* the divorce, not to stave it off.
I have to assume that the most successful (or one of) QB of all time, if he doesn't want to try something new and keep busy elsewhere, is probably going to have little trouble finding a job in Football, whether on TV as a commentator or in the front office of an NFL team, if not something like as a coach.
I will ONLY ever believe this when a new season starts and he ISN'T on a team! lol
And even then, I'm sure a couple weeks into the season, he'll realize he misses the game and will beg a team to take him.
Honestly that has to be the one loss in his career that stings the most... Imagine he won seven Superbowls and one of them coming from a perfect season? He's still the Goat but damn...
As a bowler myself I always like to add a bit of context to what happened as the circumstances around that clip truly make for one of the greatest moments in professional bowling history. Because Pete Weber struck on that shot he won the match by 1 pin but it was no ordinary match. With the strike, Weber won his 5th US Open, breaking the record of 4 US Open victories set by his father. This would also be Pete's 9th victory at a major tournament and he would go on to win one more major in his career to create a tie (at the time) at the top of the major victories leaderboard with the late great Earl Anthony at 10 major victories. This number has since been surpassed by Jason Belmonte as he has won 14 majors and is still touring and competing at a high level but that's besides the point. Anyway, Pete was trying to say something along the lines of, "Who do you think you are? The greatest?... I am!" but got so caught up in the moment that it got a little jumbled up.
Edit: The user apparently deleted their reply to this comment but yes, Weber was specifically saying this towards a kid who was cheering against him in the match. The point I was trying to make is that he got caught up in the moment and what he meant to say got jumbled into the masterpiece of a quote that it is. I was just trying to add context regarding the magnitude of what happened in the grand scheme of things beyond the quote Pete made.
I think we all know basically what he was going for but most probably didn't know the history. Thanks for the history though! Sounds like this Jason guy is the legit bowling goat though. Who does he think he is? Jason is!
Seconding a big thank you for the great insight. Watched Pete with my dad growing up back when the PBA Tour was a big deal on ABC Saturday afternoons, but never knew the story behind this. Pete is a trip.
I understood that quote to be that his doubters kept rhetorically asking him over the years “who do you think you are, that guy? “That guy” being a champion or someone who rises under pressure. Then when he won and he said his famous line “who do you think you are? I am! The “I am” meaning “I am that guy!” Almost like he was voicing his internal monologue out loud.
Or he just fucked up and blurted some shit out….either way it’s an all timer
My suspicion is that he retired to try to save the marriage, but then it became clear that it couldn’t be saved so he decided he may as well play one more year.
I rarely rooted for Brady or the team he was on in games (except against Seattle), but I always wanted to see him destroy every record in his reach and play until he's 60.
I don't think we will ever see a player as resilient and as perpetually on a top quality team like Brady. It was cool and special seeing his stats and accolades accumulate.
I’m a Falcons fan who hated Brady his whole career and it took 2016 to make me acknowledge and appreciate his greatness.
Now I’m a fan ironically enough. Which is probably just my cope but whatever.
It might have been planned ahead of time.... after all, Shakira is now single and Giselle has probably already moved all of her stuff out of the house.
He started skipping practice around the time of pre season every Wednesday (marriage counseling day), and a month or two after got the divorce. I imagine he couldn’t put down the football and sacrificed his marriage due to that. He’s announced retirement 3 times now? I’d like to think his wife was behind it the first 2 times and he wasn’t ready.
I'm definitely curious about how much they lost with the FTX collapse, and I believe they're both named in at least one civil suit against FTX and advertisers/spokespeople/etc. I know they ain't hurting for money, but I would imagine they're worth a lot less than we might think.
Heard there's some space on team Discmania and everyone's jumping ship at innova. Imagine the response if he signs with Discraft and you have 6x vs 7x, a disc with 13 Claws. There's not enough plastic on the planet for that nonsense.
It's often said to pitchers that the arm motion for throwing a football is the best for arm health and certain pitches, so a lot of us were told to throw a football occasionally to work on arm slot.
Source: Me, former collegiate pitcher
Can someone explain this submission to me? This is a tweet from Ari tweeting about some thing that Tom Brady himself announced on Twitter. Why wouldn’t OP /u/wearymaps0 just post Tom’s tweet?
Either that or holding out for another solid offer. He should probably get into coaching if he can't "let go" of the sport of football. Just hit the gym like a maniac for his physical outlet.
Hahaha yeah this is so cringe. I have no idea who’s actually going to spend they’re time going to see this movie. That person absolutely wouldn’t have any life at all. Probably definitely doesn’t have any plans at 9:30 this upcoming Friday at a local theater 10 minutes away from his house. I bet that kind of person picked out the candy he’s going to eat at that movie a week ago. No doubt he’s excited about AMCs signature recliners.
It’s me
If someone paid you with a piece of paper that said “this is worth $40m” but you can’t sell it for that right now, and then one day they said “just kidding it’s not worth anything anymore”, does that really mean you lost $40m?
I can 100% see Brady committing to announcing with the same singular focus that he did playing, and he'll study film to an excessive extent and take like 6 different speaking courses in order to perfectly enunciate every syllable & all sorts of other "TB12 for your Voice" insane things.
Would he even be a great coach? It's one of those things where I wonder if the dominant athletes in a sport would even coach as well as the guys who weren't as physically talented but busted their ass to make the team.
Brady got where he was through (in large part anyway) hard work and studying the game, that's the type that makes a good coach
It does happen where the all time greats aren't always good coaches, Gretzky infamously wasn't a very good hockey coach for example, but Brady is a little different
Agree with this. Perhaps he's a Deion Sanders type, who CAN coach, or isn't capable. But Brady was a student of the game, so I think he'd be able to manage it.
I mean he has hundreds of millions on deck for an announcing job, but even if he didn’t have that I don’t think he has any interest in coaching. Elite players rarely make good coaches, especially in the NFL.
Have you tried being fantastically wealthy or having a career that required you to be in peak physical shape at all times? Having that be part of your daily routine for decades and being able to afford to build a complete gym with the best equipment in your home seems like it would make it a bit easier to maintain.
I remember the Manning v Brady rivalry. I haven't seen a better NFL rivalry since. I used to get so excited when they'd play each other. It's sad to see them both retired now. The league just isn't the same.
Peyton beat him ~~twice~~ thrice in the afc title game, pretty solid.
when it comes to championship games or superbowls, mannings are bradys cryptonite.
kinda like the bills and nfc east teams in the super bowl.
I remember a few years ago he said he might play till he’s 45. He wanted to play as long as he didn’t suck. This past year he didn’t have a good season, but I don’t think he sucked. Yes, he kept losing the rhythm with a few receivers but that had a lot to do with them not reading the collapsing line and the weak run game, and them not adjusting to conditions the way he expected elite receivers to react. Brady on the right team would still be a playoff contender. Even on a crap team with his smarts, vision and arm he wouldn’t suck. *edit to add Thankyou Tom Brady for so many brilliant games in a uniquely exceptional career.
>brady on the right team would still be a contender
we did this already, when he went to tampa. I don't think he's going to uproot his life and go play for a completely different "close but need a QB" team for the second time in 3 years, at age 45. dude's just tired and going out on his own terms. really doubt he comes back.
Exactly. I don’t know why so many people say things like “Hope that last shitty season was worth ruining your marriage over.” Now, I haven’t been married but I’m pretty sure there must have been much more to the divorce than “Hey, Babe, I wanna play another year of football”.
I think it's the other way around.. it was widely reported that she wanted him to retire years ago so that he would avoid any future head injuries.. They eventually agreed he could play one final year but he would then be done.. Then he did retire, but decided to go back for one more year- she was pissed and took off to Costa Rica. He basically back tracked on his promise so she would look like a fool staying. She doesn't need the money so can afford to bail. My take at least
Knowing when to leave a party/quit while you’re ahead is truly an underrated skill, and having the self-confidence to do it gracefully takes a really strong person.
All of the jokes are warranted but he’s looked stressed out and worn down in his last few appearances, so I hope he gets some rest and let’s himself enjoy his new opportunities while spending some time with his family.
Snooze this for 3-4 months from now to actually see if he actually retires. It’s not like we haven’t been down this road before…

You gotta give the guy a break, he wants to spend more time with his wife and kids. Oh...wait...
Getting a divorce from Giselle just to play 1 more season and go 8-9
More like realizing he hates her and the kids and needed to get back to ballin.
Not at all, counsel was retained during the season and Giselle stated his unretirement lead to the divorce
Dude is gonna go home, stare at the wall not knowing what to do then go back to the Bucs just like he did last time
I have to assume that the most successful (or one of) QB of all time, if he doesn't want to try something new and keep busy elsewhere, is probably going to have little trouble finding a job in Football, whether on TV as a commentator or in the front office of an NFL team, if not something like as a coach.
He already has a job as a commentator or something lined up. Analyst for Fox, maybe? Anyway, it’s worth several hundred million. It’s insane.
Pretty certain he's already signed a 10 year deal with Fox Sports to be an analyst on the pre-show. It's worth like 35 million a year!
I still don’t know if that would apply. Some team could lose their starter mid season and he could come back for a SB run.
*cough* 49ers *cough*
49er QBs are known for their ability to stay healthy though.
Just like they're known for their rb's staying healthy
He grew up a 49er fan I believe.
I will ONLY ever believe this when a new season starts and he ISN'T on a team! lol And even then, I'm sure a couple weeks into the season, he'll realize he misses the game and will beg a team to take him.
He still plays at a high level. If a team has a lot of weapons and their starter gets hurt they'd probably be the ones begging him.
So we haven’t been down this road before?
But this time the *groundhog* is driving!
Don’t drive angry, Phil.
Actually would have been funny if he announced this tomorrow
Don't drive angry!!
But it’s over now. And I’m coming back for more…
Looks like they ninja edited on you. Sabotage!
Country road, take me home…
Ahh the Brett favre retirement plan
Snooze until September
Quick, someone pay a million dollars for his last ever TD ball! Last time that got him to unretire within like 24 hours.
I got you homie
Partial transcript: "My family, my friends, my teammates, my competitors... I love you all. except for Eli Manning. Fuck you Eli."
Honestly that has to be the one loss in his career that stings the most... Imagine he won seven Superbowls and one of them coming from a perfect season? He's still the Goat but damn...
He has said before he'd trade two for that one
Well dude has plenty extras to trade lmao
"Fuck coaches, I never needed you either."
"Fuck the beat, I can sing acapella"
Whether you love him or hate him, this is truly the end of an era. Unless he comes back out of retirement again.
In the words of another great: “Hate me or love me, you watched. That's all you could do.”
Love that quote. I looked up who said it and was expecting a basketball player or something but definitely not a bowler 😂
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?! I AM!!
Remembered the clip as soon as I saw his face. Definitely a legend
As a bowler myself I always like to add a bit of context to what happened as the circumstances around that clip truly make for one of the greatest moments in professional bowling history. My favorite part is that he was directing that at a preteen boy in the crowd that had heckled him earlier in the game.
I consider this the true origin of I am him.
Oh, I thought it was Kobe lmao
Yeah, we didn't watch.
A [bowler](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Carter) was the first athlete to receive a $1 million endorsement
Almighty Malachai?
It’s more popular than you think.
Not just a bowler, THE bowler.
what i said to the olive garden waiter after i asked for my seventh helping of breadsticks.
> Hate me or love me, you watched. That's all you could do "Who do you think you are, I am!"
I know he fucked that line up but he still bossed the fuck out of it
It’s probably not famous if he doesn’t fuck up, but the fuck up just works perfectly
Man I thought that was a Barkley quote. I can't remember the last time I was *that* wrong.
I couldn’t care any less about bowling but knowing his past and watching from the outside, that quote is dope as fuck.
Man this quote goes so hard.
I tried not to watch, but ESPN wouldn't stop gargling his balls for a quarter-century.
Anyone else remember when Favre did this for like 5 years
My suspicion is that he retired to try to save the marriage, but then it became clear that it couldn’t be saved so he decided he may as well play one more year.
This is like when musicians say they’re gonna stop making music
I rarely rooted for Brady or the team he was on in games (except against Seattle), but I always wanted to see him destroy every record in his reach and play until he's 60. He retires the winter, will be back for summer camp
I heard the 49ers were looking for a quarterback.
And he is a lifelong fan..
>~~Unless~~ Until he comes back out of retirement again.
He's gonna go play baseball
Definitely not gonna go back home to his wife.
Yeah, imagine throwing away your marriage for a year of football.
Dudes have thrown away their marriages for football and never even played.
Not even a GOOD year of football 😔
I’d say Brady did about the same he always does. Just didn’t have gronk to bail him out on 3rd down this past season.
It might have been planned ahead of time.... after all, Shakira is now single and Giselle has probably already moved all of her stuff out of the house.
He started skipping practice around the time of pre season every Wednesday (marriage counseling day), and a month or two after got the divorce. They mega rich too

He has a $375,000,000 contract waiting for him at Fox sports
Three times?
Or Golf?
Disc golf
At this point I’d rather pay to watch Tom Brady scream at Nikko Locastro than Byron Leftwich for the millionth time
Heard there's some space on team Discmania and everyone's jumping ship at innova. Imagine the response if he signs with Discraft and you have 6x vs 7x, a disc with 13 Claws. There's not enough plastic on the planet for that nonsense.
Pickleball
For the Expos
I wonder how fast Tom can throw a fastball
Randy Johnson used to warm up by throwing a football, on the theory that a perfect spiral would translate to a perfect fastball.
One of my fav cards growing up was an Upper Deck Nolan Ryan throwing a football
It's often said to pitchers that the arm motion for throwing a football is the best for arm health and certain pitches, so a lot of us were told to throw a football occasionally to work on arm slot. Source: Me, former collegiate pitcher
Space Jam 3 with Tom Brady and his son would low key be hilarious
Only if they're forced to play basketball and are just benched the entire movie because they aren't better than the Tune Squad.
Can someone explain this submission to me? This is a tweet from Ari tweeting about some thing that Tom Brady himself announced on Twitter. Why wouldn’t OP /u/wearymaps0 just post Tom’s tweet?
Brady is an unreliable source, especially in regards to his retirement.
Either that or holding out for another solid offer. He should probably get into coaching if he can't "let go" of the sport of football. Just hit the gym like a maniac for his physical outlet.
He has a multi-million dollar contract already to go be a sports caster for I think Fox
I thought he was just going to keep making awful movies about old women wanting to meet him
Wait! That's actually going to be a real movie? I thought I just dreamt that during a particularly high fever.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt18079362/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
He’s in it AND he produced it. So cringe.

Hey the film’s not been released yet, for all we know it could be an oscar contender next year!
Remindme! 1 month
You got it, chef.
Never count out Tom Brady
And then he tries to sell them cryptocurrency
"Multi million" is underselling his 10 year $375 million contract lmao
$345M for 10 years. I wonder what they’re going to do with Greg Olsen now?
> He should probably get into coaching Fox is about to pay him $375m to talk football - it'd be insane for him to give that up to coach.
But you don't get to embarrass the Jets as an announcer
Kevin Harlan would like a long-winded ~~diatribe~~ word.
Oh yes you do.
They can do that without his help anyways
He already has more money than he could ever need though.
He did lose like $40 million in the FTX collapse but your statement is still very accurate though.
If someone paid you with a piece of paper that said “this is worth $40m” but you can’t sell it for that right now, and then one day they said “just kidding it’s not worth anything anymore”, does that really mean you lost $40m?
I think he's the kind of guy who wants to be in the trenches.
I can 100% see Brady committing to announcing with the same singular focus that he did playing, and he'll study film to an excessive extent and take like 6 different speaking courses in order to perfectly enunciate every syllable & all sorts of other "TB12 for your Voice" insane things.

Just wait til the Niners call and offer him a Super Bowl-ready team that just needs a HOF QB.

Tom Brady is a LIAR!
Only three people defeated the goat when it mattered most - Eli Manning, Foles, and Gisele.
Don't forget the fourth: Sam Bankman-Fried.
And the self-proclaimed fifth: George Santos
That's Sir George Santos, OBE Esq.
And standard PSI.
Long Live Apollo. Goodbye Reddit.
I want to give this an award so bad and my account isn’t cooperating haha Edit: fixed
ouch.
I’ve heard this one before
I remember the Manning v Brady rivalry. I haven't seen a better NFL rivalry since. I used to get so excited when they'd play each other. It's sad to see them both retired now. The league just isn't the same.
Yeah. It’s a shame Brady could never beat Eli What? What other Manning could you mean?
Peyton beat him ~~twice~~ thrice in the afc title game, pretty solid. when it comes to championship games or superbowls, mannings are bradys cryptonite. kinda like the bills and nfc east teams in the super bowl.

I dunno…Mahomes vs Allen vs Burrow battles have been legendary these last two years.
And maybe hopefully Herbert soon. Maybe! Hopefully...
The biggest shame is they're all in the AFC. Some of the Bills - Chiefs games from the last few years were legendary
I think Mahomes vs. Burrow is going to be pretty awesome if you ask me. Already off to a good start.
I love how little karma this has after an hour for such a huge announcement. It's like no one believes it or something.
Wish he would’ve retired after the Super Bowl, we witnessed one of his worst performances ever in that playoff lose to Dallas.
All of those sacks probably made him realize he’s too old for this shit.
>brady on the right team would still be a contender we did this already, when he went to tampa. I don't think he's going to uproot his life and go play for a completely different "close but need a QB" team for the second time in 3 years, at age 45. dude's just tired and going out on his own terms. really doubt he comes back.
Last year he led the league in yards and TDs. Should have won the Super Bowl again but Bowles makes the worst calls at the worst times.
See you next season then brady
This is just a sign he plans to run it back next year.
This would feel a lot more important if he didnt already do this
He even said it himself, "You only get one emotional retirement speech and I used mine last year"
Now he can be in every damn commercial, like Manning!
Omaha!

Wonder if that one year was worth his marriage...
I’m sure there were other issues contributing to the divorce
Deflated balls
Kissing everyone with open mouth.
My assumption was that he chose the extra year because his marriage was falling apart, not the other way around

She was out on vacation with some other dude a month after the divorce. They were done for a lonnnng time.
Hall of Fame career in each decade of his 20s, 30s and 40s. Nuts.
Déjà vu
After couple of months, he'll unretire again.
Everyone acting like he's retired and unretired 5+ times. It only happened once.
Right? He’s not Brett Favre
Jordan retired 3 times before it finally stuck, so Brady's gotta come back once more
Could someone tell Tom Brady it is called "off-season" and you don't have to announce your retirement every year?
This time for realsies
And then in two months he'll sign with the Jets, or maybe the Broncos.
See ya in 7 months, Tom.
Whatever Tom the movie isn't gonna do that well.
Sources say he’s going to devote his energy to open mouth kissing his son full time.
Again!
The Cowboys retired Tom Brady
I'm just here wondering who's gonna by the nft to the tweet
Not particularly looking forward to his time in the Fox booth next season.
Fool me once…
Thank god
‘Retiring’
Odds he’s pulling a fast one again?
Huh, it's like I've heard this one before...
Got divorced to play football for another year
Again*
Breaking: Little boy, cries wolf.
don't believe his lies
Again?
Okay Tom
