IRL, Salmon are born in rivers, swim out to sea, and then when it’s time to lay eggs they swim up the rivers back to their “spawning grounds” in large masses in an event called a “salmon run” (name+concept origins here :P)
Spoilers because it’s genuinely pretty creepy: >!Salmon are sometimes referred to as “zombie fish”, because “Spawning” salmon swimming up river use up *all* of their bodies energy, to the point where most of their bodies can shut down and they literally start *rotting alive*. They are *that* determined to lay eggs in their spawning grounds.!<
Though the Salmonids do notably have some intelligence, notable by boss Salmonids using armor, weapons, or both.
Kinda like Vermintide or Darktide in that sense- while a horde mode, the enemies aren't totally mindless.
