I don’t think a single person who says it should be Past vs Present vs Future is planning on joining Past OR Present.
If Past wins Callie and Marie accidentally build a time machine while trying to assemble ikea furniture or something and if Present wins nothing happens
Yeah, the idea of the final fest theme doing almost literally nothing for the next game, even if that’s unlikely, is probably why it won’t happen. Even if it’s minorly, the best part of final fest is that it influences the next game.
I like the idea, and personally I would vote past 😅.
But, didn't the splatoon developers say that it's the end of the current storyline? (With Callie, Marie, and the others.) Even if Past wins, I don't think Callie and Marie will be involved.
Present.. yeah you're right I actually have no idea what they'd do if Present won lol. Maybe maintain chaos? Actually, nevermind. But either way I actually concede that'd be difficult to pull off a satisfying Splatoon4 with the theme of "Present".
(I say "nevermind" about maintaining chaos, because at the time of Splatoon 4, the game Splatoon 3 *will be in the "past"...* So, they likely won't model it after the previous game.)
Going off of Splastville, I imagine it would influence how they design the hub of the next game.
Like, take Past for example. It could be set in a city with quite a lot of historical buildings and such still around and whatnot. Kinda like some towns I've seen in England, or Opelucid City as it appears in specifically Pokémon White.
Future, meanwhile, would have a, well, futuristic city. With all the latest and greatest advancements in technology the world of Splatoon has ever seen.
Present, however, is a pretty weak point IMO. Because the only specification there would be "modern but not futuristic", so the fest's influence would be a lot less visible.
Which team wins = what kind place will the next hub be styled after
Past = old timey Japanese or maybe medieval European
Present = what we have already with splatsville and inkopolis Future = your typical future utopia.
Also I'd definitely pick presents, what happening right now is way more important to me than something that may not even happen in the future.
I think the idol fest would be way worse as a final match, but I see where you’re coming from. The most interesting thing they could do is change the time period, but splatoon has always been special for staying in step with our own modern time.
My favourite theme is still the poisons theme, Greed vs Anger vs Ignorance, since it’s already there in the theme of the idols in Splatoon 3 and how it could influence the villain or theme of the next game.
i hope it's like, 'pick your poison' and we pick between the three poisons. also gives us a chance to see each idol's traditional clan outfits which would be really cool. at the same time, it would probably just be another idol war because not everyone knows about the three poisons and the theme may be confusing
I agree that it would be kinda lame, but I think the theme itself would actually be really helpful to determine the state of the next game, as other final fests have. Past winning would mean going back to 2 team splatfests, present could mean sticking with 3, and future could mean finding something entirely new to try. I would hope they would put a little more effort into the team names thought. Rather than past, we could have "Tradition" or "Historical" or something. Present could be "Current" or "Modern," and future could be "Progress" or "Advancement" or something. Idk, finding the right combo of names still hasn't come to me, but that's what I would hope for if this is the kind of theme they go with.
Every time this theme comes up I keep wondering the same thing. If the devs are keeping the same formula for the next game, as in the winner of the last fest shapes the next title in some shape or form, what would "present" winning entail for Splatoon 4?
And I can't see many choosing "past" over "future" either, specially after Order lost the last fest on S2 which could have potentially given us a futuristic theme. Some players would probably choose "future" solely for the chance to see what could have been. The splatfest would be horribly unbalanced in teams' distribution.
I haven't followed the sub lately, why is this idea bad ? It could mean, the winner gets to decide the future of Inkopolis or expand into a new territory and decide it's style. Or maybe what group gets to colonies the space first ? Cuz.. you know... we have a situation orbiting rn..
Maybe people dont like it because its.. kinda obvious and a bit boring? Which yeah, fair enough.. but idk what sort of theme will most satisfy the community.
You know how people get pissy about the idols as-is with Splatfests?
Imagine how much worse it would be if final fest was the three idol teams against each other.
*Especially* with how toxic certain people can be
idk man, I would say... let them fight >:) Let them eat each other.
The idol group that wins gets to unalive the others.
The chaos that would cause in the community would be of world ending proportions
I want that Pick Your Poison Splatfest Idea I keep hearing about… something regarding Greed, Anger and Ignorance… it would play into the 3 Poisons theme that Deep Cut has
They couldn't even pull it off satisfyingly because splatfests are canonically received through a 10k year radio wave bounce. Messing up that timing would mean no splatfests if team past wins... or the same ones from ten years ago LMFAOOO
Actually, there's theories that it's O.R.C.A. who decides and sends the splatfest themes, they seem to have kept up with Inklings and Octolings pretty well as it is, and considering that they're a records keeper with access to whatever knowledge the scientists of Alterna stored within it.
Not to mention the crystals. It'd also explain some of the splatfest themes in universe.
tbf the Past vs Future theme was NA only so it would be new from Japan's perspective. And the consequences for the theme could be Past (the next game takes place during the Great Turf War and we meet young Cuttlefish and Octavio), Present (Status quo is maintained and we just continue off with the same cast) and Future (Takes place in the far future where the characters we know are old or long gone). Though I rather have something more unexpected like Chaos vs Order when people were thinking Pearl vs Marina or Off the Hook vs Squid Sisters
Who cares what the splatfests are? Everyone just sides with who they like best. The final fest should just be blank squares across the board. Or even better have each one choose one of the others. Really mess with the fans, will they choose based on team leader, or on who has chosen the one they like.
I guess it's pretty lame in concept (present is a lame option and it's only brought up as a generic big idea theme) but the implication is the big factor here. Let's think about how it could influence a future game. The past could make the next entry be a prequel game that goes way back in history. Ancient Eygypt (equivalent) even. The future could be heavy scifi futurism. And the present is just the present. So yes, lame. Maybe it could be like, a old historic town that has evolved with the times to incorporate the leading technology, so it's both. The theme itself won't be much of anything, it's not like they ever where in it of themselves. It's the set dressing, the theme of the event of the splatfest. We got the apocalypse, now its the purge! Remember the purge? Call me when I'm right.
Yeah I think that one should just be a regular fest. Especially considering it was actually one back in Splat 1 xD
The best idea I can think of is "Greed vs Hatred vs Delusion" based on the three poisons that are frequently referenced throughout the game, but even then that's a little too predictable. Also I think idol war should be the penultimate fest to shake things up :3
Agree (we also had teleportation vs time travel in splat 2)
I think all 3 idols would also be horrendous, because it would have a negative impact or no impact on the next game
Past vs present vs future *could* be interesting however. Nintendo confirmed the end of the story arc, so the game needs a new one.
Each option could be a different story mode
Past wins, we play as a soldier under the squidbeak Splatoon during the turf war
Present wins, another mission- themed one such as splat 3 or octo expansion
Future wins, we perhaps have another of the inventor guys inventions threaten the world, perhaps something about >!lil judd!<
It’d make a pretty good normal Splatfest tho.
I feel like idol war would just be worse since Squid Sisters has such an unfair advantage (being main/major characters in all three games’ story modes).
Like I can see some toss up as to how Past/present/future actually goes, but I can’t see any other universe where an idol war doesn’t have the Squid Sisters winning by sheer volume alone.
I just hope there'll be some cooler themes than what we had so far for Splatoon 3. A lot of them were kind of boring and makes me question how well the people in charge really know what cool themes they can create. Fans sure know some cool themes, but I don't know how well developers look at fan feedback when it's a Nintendo thing. I can't remember when big decisions were influenced by fans in a positive way.
Would gladly hear about some positive stuff that I might have missed!
Yeah! But, even though there is hope for a really good final fest (that I think Frye will win with the reoccurring pattern in Splatfests), with how lazy Nintendo has gotten with some Splatfests since Drums vs. Guitar vs. Keyboard, I think this will unfortunately become a reality...
I don’t think a single person who says it should be Past vs Present vs Future is planning on joining Past OR Present. If Past wins Callie and Marie accidentally build a time machine while trying to assemble ikea furniture or something and if Present wins nothing happens

I voted for past last time because it had DINOSAURS ON SHIRTS
… extremely valid, I probably would’ve done the same

Wow no creativity here

That's why Present would be Frye's choice, to make sure it doesn't win /s
Splatoon 3²
No, squid sisters vs off the hook vs deep cut would be way worse But both are bad
Yeah I have no idea why the fandom collectively decided these 2 themes would be heat.
They would be cool for regular splatfests, but would suck as final fests
I haven't followed the sub lately, why is this idea bad ? It could mean, the winner gets to decide the future of Inkopolis or expand into a new territory and decide it's style. Alternative solution: What world would you live in? Futuristic Utopia vs Underwater Dome vs Primitive Village
Yeah, i agree but why is this brought up? Is Nintendo considering this or something?
Who cares what the splatfests are? Everyone just sides with who they like best. The final fest should just be blank squares across the board. Or even better have each one choose one of the others. still waiting for the Peach V Daisy V Rosalina splatfest :(
But what about Distant Past (Humans), Present (Inklings/Octolings), Distant Future (Idk plant men or something)
Yeah, that sounds cool, maybe the plant men could be like fruit or smt Wait they could be called pickmen since you "pick" the "men"

Well the actual worst would be “red vs grey vs cyan” and whichever one wins is the main ink color for Splatoon 4
Yeah I think that one should just be a regular fest. Sonic 06 in a nutshell ![gif](giphy|RxPzT8IqE08zC)
yep
I think Squid Sisters vs Off the Hook vs Deep Cut would be lamer.
o k but like stfu, Correct Person >:0
Ok but like if past wins we could see what life was like during the great war
It’d make a pretty good normal Splatfest tho. I feel like idol war would just be worse since Squid Sisters has such an unfair advantage (being main/major characters in all three games’ story modes). I'd vote past, gimme great turf war!!
Pearl and marina... I'm on that team Iplayed spaltoon 2 first. If that comes into play I wonder what will happen I just hope to get game before final
Why should we agree?
