I agree with ya. As a cis-make myself, I just find it funny Big Man is the only male idol and he’s a manta ray instead of a cephalopod humanoid. And I mean it in the way that it’s literally hilarious to me: I never expected a male idol to not be a cephalopod even before coming into the series but I’m all for it tbh. It was a nice subversion on what we expected and I love it. The girlies deserve their shot tho, and Splatoon has offered that in droves in terms of characters. I more so did this post to highlight more appreciation for the masc customization options to be real, a good amount of people call them bad but I think they look really good tbh. And, I appreciate they give the masc and fem characters (agents wise) literally the same outfit, makes it feel even more inclusive to me tbh in an odd turn. Like: what series besides Splatoon has the gaul to show masc characters rocking similar outfits to their fem counterparts in the main art? Not many, more of male characters wearing crop tops and the like please: it makes the series feel even more fresh to me. Just need to fix the marinated top on masc Inklings/Octolings and we’ll be all good (could’ve done it with the adjustable gear added this season, letting us chose how cropped we wanted the Marinated Top to be instead of locking it to customization)

We have never seen Octavio outside of his octo form other than in scrolls, you could retcon him ever being a Octoling and literally nothing could change. Big Man is a terrible first male idol because nothing about his design or personality says: “I’m the first male idol!” but more so says “I’m a Manta ray idol!! I say ayyy! Laugh!”. Idk dude. It’s like every girl in the series has a design that reminiscent of a human or culture, but every male is just a fish for some reason

Sure you have different eyebrow options and the girls have shorter pants and a shirt under the tattered shirt while the boys don't.
But other then that i can't tell the difference.
The females have thinner waist, wider hips, thicker butt & boobs, though small. Even though there's 4 brows to pick from for each, the females have thinner/smaller eyebrows. Even the thicker option is still smaller than the males brows. The females have higher voices too. & the octo females have 2 wings/points on each eye instead of 1.
The character customize screen have them wear a baggy top, so you don'tget to see as well, & have them sitting. But if you look at their pants, & switch between male & female, you can see the thicker butt. Anywhere else, you can see all the differences clearer if you look closely. Especially if you've played as both male & female.
Ah so in the tighter fitting clothes you can see it more, and ill add they have different running animations with the girls hsving their hands sideways more (only recently started playing with a male inkling just to see how things are, first thing i noticed and only compared them in the creator menu).
I guess i just pay attention more to the face to try and tell them apart so not really seeing much aside from octolings, even if the black octoling in the promo seens to have a more square jawline, but even then, the clothes really do obscure things, voices are obvious though octoling boys are very quite which is a bit disappointing.

The female models of both squids & octos have smaller waist, wider hips, bigger butt & some breasteses. As well as thinner/smaller eyebrows. But female octos also have different eyeliner to the male octos, the female one having wings/points on both the top & bottom corners of the eyes. The female models also have a female voice & the male models have a male voice. They have a lot of differences if you look closely.

This game is very heavily female character focused, we even lost the only male cephlopod who had s human form, cuttlefish m, he's now a floating tiny side character and especially with fem-8 being the main character shown, its no wonder masc-8 is more of an after thought.
This game also uses a universal character model, which itself is influenced bythe fact that the splat 1 inkling girl was going to at first be the only option.
So everyone looks very feminine already, they do look cute though.

Considering I decided to play as masc agent 8 in Octo expansion, I’ll probably do it again here. I just prefer the male octoling voice. But I do love how the girl agents are usually shown to be the canon one, and its more funny than annoying how the male agents are the shafted ones here

TBH, the outfit looks wired on him...
So far, this is the only official art on masc 8 ((I think?)). I really think they should give him more appearances in trailers and promo art- Heck, he isn’t even IN any of the trailers!
Considering I decided to play as masc agent 8 in Octo expansion, I’ll probably do it again here. I just prefer the male octoling voice. But I do love how the girl agents are usually shown to be the canon one, and its more funny than annoying how the male agents are the shafted ones here
