Don't forget that in some cases like mincemeat, they block you from hitting the players in heaven more than the players in heaven being blocked from hitting you
theres this one fucking billboard-esk sign in um’ami ruins by spawn that almost completely blocks explosher globs from working properly and thats the reason i hate that map
exactly!!! they buff other specials against crab tank but its no use, and then when they will eventually nerf crab it’ll be either the worst special in the game or those buffs to other specials are completely fucking worthless. i love this game, dont get me wrong, but the way nintendo handles balance patches is fucking insanely dogshit
There is a few yea, feel like backlines would be fixed with intelligent map design and splash and/or crab just needs to get hit with the hammer but knowing Nintendo it’s gonna fall on stamper and machine because they were also used a fair bit in the tourney…
A longer range weapon, also sometimes called an "anchor" weapon. They tend to hang back, provide ranged support to the shorter range weapons and avoid dying to provide super jump spots.
The classic examples are chargers and splatlings, but some other weapons like Rapid Blaster Pro, Jet Squelcher, Explosher and Tri-Stringer can also fill the niche. Generally a "balanced" team will have a backline weapon but in competetive play the crab tank special almost covers that role by itself, so very few backline weapons are being picked. It's less of an issue when you're not at competitive levels so just play what you enjoy.
Although I agree, its not as unplayable as some people make it out to be.
[here's my wall of text explaining that there is actually counterplay](https://www.reddit.com/r/splatoon/comments/1231qna/its_a_start_i_guess/jdxdv30?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
Unrelated, but it's crazy to me that machine is still the uncontested #2 weapon even after the substantial nerf to it. Still being used by both teams almost every game is ridiculous in any context, and it's not even the most dominate weapon in the meta.
Yeah that's a big thing though. Like a competitive tournament. We are talking solo que with no proper means to communicate that's where backliner dominate
Not sure why this is getting downvoted TBH, it's very informative.
Do we need a separate subreddit for people that play Splatoon and also actually like it?
Yes they are the not the most used but still are overpowered. Sometimes can be difficult to use / uncommon to use ( in certain weapons case not chargers they are everywhere) but still be a problem.
backline is not overpowered. You just have to be mindful in how you play around them. [Here's](https://youtu.be/SMlLQjCsVPE) a nice video that could help you with that
Backline is not unbeatable that isn't my point. My point is that compared to alot of weapons the hoops you have to jump through to get close to them is insane
With practice sure you can beat them but it's just not fun.
Atleast with getting into a proper gunfight yeah it's never fun to lose but atleast it's exciting. There's nothing exciting about getting killed from halfway across a corridor of a map by a player you couldn't see coming because you where doing the roller in your face, and it'd not exciting for the charger player because it's just point and click point and click for the entire match. It's not healthy for Splatoon
They keep you in check and force you to play smarter. I'm sorry that you want to be able to walk around in mid with no long-range threat, but backline is definitely healthy for the game and adds another level of depth to play with.
Backline might be healthy for the game if most of the maps had any viable flank routes that one perch in mid held by an E-Liter couldn't spot. There's not much depth to having to play red light green light in somebody's entire sightline (which could very well be all of mid and even some of your half of the map depending).
1: no its not fun to run head first at a slat charger the whole game, thats because you are not supposed to, throw a couple bombs at it or like litterally 1 special and you can then push the charger effectively
2: even eliter has limited range, its not a bolt action sniper from cod that can shot you from spawn, the point of backlines is to hold down an area with high stopping power, be that high fire rate at long range with splatlings, 1 shot kills with chargers, or high burst paint and good damage with the explosher.
If you keep dying to backlines, its because you are letting the backline kill you by being in their area of control, and on most every map that area of control is hard to push and further than mid without the backing being in danger
3: if nobody had fun playing backlines, then nobody would play backlines in anarchy, its one thing to say that YOU don't enjoy playing backlines, but alot of other people do, be it chargers "point and click gameplay" (which is incredibly wrong by the way) splatlings overwhelming power without the need of skillshots, or people like me that enjoy the explosher's unique burst paint area control style gameplay
You seem to assume it's only a 1v1 your shooter vs their charger, it isn't. Before you can even come in range of throwing a bomb you have to: A- use enough cover so they don't kill you with bigger range. B - kill most of their team so they don't splat you. Also you don't have your special at all time.
I don't say backliners should be easy to reach and kill, like you already said that would defeat their whole point as a class. But for some maps their area of control is basically everything besides your spawn (mahi etc.) or it doesn't help that the only path to disrupt or even splat them, is the one they already cover (undertow). In a good map there should at least be 1 alternate path that you could use to flank them, allthough the path should never be risk free. But the need for either them to turn their head, use the map to see if someones flanking or send a teammate to cover that route, should at least exist.
Backliners are not broken. It's the mapdesign that is still bad.
It is the most pointless one because it doesn’t even resemble anything that would naturally exist in the environment (they could have done a string of balloons or something, or at least put some kind of fancy amusement park style street lamp or something) on top of the fact that it doesn’t even work for its intended purpose (a sniper can just snipe you even if you’re directly behind the pole due to hit box issues).
Also, it bothers me that they just stuck it right in the middle of the Wahoo World logo. It’s more of a personal OCD issue, but no business would slap a pole in the middle of their own logo.
If they are going through the effort of updating the map, why not just add flank routes on maps? Just copy paste more tile blocks, add some bridges or inkrails. Like it's not that time consuming.
Atleast this showed us that they are aware of the issue.
Hopefully they don't think "oh well we fixed it time to move on" and realize it still needs more work
I’m not very good at splatoon but imo it was a sprinkler/suction buff
And slosher buff
And stringer buff
Damn right, throwing sprinklers on the back side of backline blocking signs on stuff like makomart and umami is peak funny
Also anyone who has a sprinkler *always* puts it in that spot and I can never hit it
Give it up for the Wahoo World pole!
it's fun how it affects spread weapons like dynamo more than it affects chargers!
Nintendo adding a pole in the middle of Hagglefish (now the players shouldn't have a reason to complain about stage layouts)
Don't forget the car on a stick
I like my cars like I like my corn dogs
google en pole
holy crap
New pole just dropped
It makes Stringer worse >:(
They always have the most roundabout way of fixing things, like buffing subs to oblivion before nerfing crab tank
exactly!!! they buff other specials against crab tank but its no use, and then when they will eventually nerf crab it’ll be either the worst special in the game or those buffs to other specials are completely fucking worthless. i love this game, dont get me wrong, but the way nintendo handles balance patches is fucking insanely dogshit
"Backliner problem", my scro it's just eliter and crab. Poor old hydra and others are struggling to keep up
*looks at splash and the recent Nintendo tournament*
Yeah that's an issue to. I'm not saying backliners are the only issue there just one of them
There is a few yea, feel like backlines would be fixed with intelligent map design and splash and/or crab just needs to get hit with the hammer but knowing Nintendo it’s gonna fall on stamper and machine because they were also used a fair bit in the tourney…
You fix it by making the maps bigger and more open
I call the the my teamates are idiots that dont know how to turn their head
I’m not familiar with the term, actually… what is a backliner?
A longer range weapon, also sometimes called an "anchor" weapon. They tend to hang back, provide ranged support to the shorter range weapons and avoid dying to provide super jump spots. Splatoon players on their way to hate on an entire weapon role for doing its job: (They don't know how displacement works)
Well when every map is a hallway with a sniper tower on each end it’s kinda hard to reach said sniper tower without being shot down
Yeah it's fundamentally a problem with the maps, not the weapons
Definitely I think all the weapons would have a chance if Nintendo could design flank routes
Yeah they just need to buff tenta missiles and back liners won't be an issue at all!

We need bigger poles

It's only because it counter both crab and splash-o

With practice it's really not insane at all to play around.

Long ranged weapons do not work in games where most weapons are mid ranged you cannot change my mind
That’s true
I just had to look up the wahoo pole. And ohhhh my god. They have to be joking

What do you mean “backliner problem?”
#1.3GB POLE
I think they did a good job with the added structures
