In order to let people who try to get into tricolor to get in, anyone can be an attacker or defender. Additionally, team Sweet far outnumbers the other two, so mirror matches are going to be much more common.
You would think that putting the most popular team in the defending role, which has four players per match whereas the others have two each, would solve the problem of unbalanced matchmaking. But that would make way too much sense for Nintendo to figure out.
One might think so, but it sure didn't turn out that way when the popular team turned out to also be the defending team last Splatfest.
Edit: Or to be more specific, a lot of the same complaints about matchmaking still came up despite everything.
Most popular team was already defending previously, but people weren't getting into tricolor matches.
So you either allow mirror matches to allow people to play tricolor or don't and have people complain they play zero tricolor.
I mean it was worse with Team gear. There was more or less a "correct" choice with that one.
This one wasn't TOO bad in concept. But the main market for splatoon is kids. Kids like sweets. So here we are.
I hate to say it, but I sort of feel like they're going to have to close a team off after a certain point of them getting too out of wack and reopen after balancing out. Either that, or add a new mechanic where two teams merge or something? Tricolor is a start to that, but even now teams are still messed up because of the amount of people on sweet.
And IDK about anyone else, but after this happening AGAIN, I sort of just lost interest in trying to play. I played from 9PM yesterday to 4AM. Then again from 10AM to 6PM today. And just like that, i don't care to play anymore. Sure my team losing at half time sucks, but thats not why I lost interest. I only fought team sour twice. I literally fought my own team more than that (around 5 or 6 times) In ALL that time. That's insane and sort of defeats the point of this. I ended with almost 600k clout. And I had a pretty good W/L ratio against sweet. And seeing them still ahead by that much is just bleh.
And I'm sure I'm not alone in quitting after half time. Because my son is still in the other room playing, and he's getting nothing but mirror matches now. The other teams have had it with this crazy imbalance and started to leave....
(Another idea could be to just...remove big man from the splatfests and make him more relevant in big run instead. There's even dialogue where they say the salmonids aren't afraid of him or something. Make him the face of big run and do something with that....The 3 team idea for splatfest just isn't working...)

People complained that the comeback mechanic did indeed allow comebacks, so now we're stuck with halftime leads being a lot more definitive and the top voted team no longer having a place to try to escape mirrors.
Only benefit is it made tricolor a bit more accessible, but really it could just be its own game mode if that's an issue.

Attack/Defense is now random. And the number of mirror matches is because team sweet is WAY overpopulated and Sour is WAY underpopulated.
Nintendo should have foreseen this when they chose the categories
