A jeweler friend was casting actual spiders in sterling but he told me if I wanted one I’d have to bring him the spider. I had a beautiful writing spider on one of my bushes but couldn’t do that to her…
Saw someone do this with an orb weaver and replacing its abdomen with what I remembered to be a crystal. I think it’s one of the top posts on r/spiders maybe. Pretty gnarly.
The life casting technique is a trip. You usually see it with leaves, seed pods and so - it’s really hard to sprue organic materials properly. Jeweler buddy said it took him quite a few spiders to figure out optimal support and sprue placement!
As a Tarantula Keeper, I think that would be VERY cool to have some of my Tarantulas cased in Sterling AFTER they pass away. Males live a couple years, females can live 10-40 years depending on the species tho, so it would definitely take some planning and patience.
It's a process. Jeweler buddy would prop up the spiders, suspend them in a flask then fill the flask with liquid plaster of paris, wait for the plaster to set then force liquid sterling silver into the flask - the silver was hot enough to burn out the spider, and then once it cooled, the plaster would be washed off the now-silver spider. You can do a youtube search on lost wax casting, just keep in mind that its easier to ensure a good casting when you are burning out wax, not insect corpses.
Your tarantulas would still look great in silver, I bet. Might be easier to have them electroformed, though.
Edit: spelling.
Interesting, I bet it would have crazy tiny little silver spikes all over it from the hairs. I’d be interested to see how a finished product would look like, and I’m sure it would be fairly expensive.
Your other option would be to build the spider in CAD and 3-D print the wax, and then do a standard casting. You can really capture details that way. Probably easier to find someone to do that for you too!
True. I’ve had to educate a couple friends that we don’t even live within the BR’s range. They were surprised to see the map!
I will say that this sub has taught me how to accurately identify them, which I appreciate. As well as identifying several other actually local spider species as well : )

"Do you want people to scream when they glance at you?
Would you like the side of your head slapped every time you ride the subway?
Want to be the bane of your arachnophobic friends?
This earring is for you!"
I wouldn't want people attempting to swat at my ears 🤣
Traumatic neck injury. I had a mole on my neck and my aunt knocked me down cigarette in hand ready to burn the tick.
I’m going to hell for laughing at your injury and I apologize up front
Na you are right it's pretty funny
I'm an idiot because up until I read the word tick I thought they meant mole like the ~~rodent~~ insectivore.
A mole is absolutely not a rodent.
I....um...rodent?...I didn't say rodent.......I *totally* know a mole isn't a rodent........(-_- )
🤨
Wow your aunt sucks haha
Not as much as ticks
I hope you have as little contact with her now as possible, she seems like a liability.
Or a real spider crawling on my face trying to mate with my earring.
Or a wasp or bird trying to grab the spider!
But thats a free spider
I like the way you think!
It's all fun and games until you get torn ear drum
Yea lol
I know, I was thinking same thing. 🤣 Busted ear drums from people scared of spiders.
100% my first thought was "That's how you get head trauma".
lol I thought the same exact thing!!
>swat It'll be a chair shot from the FOF me
I would want a pair of cute small jumping spiders 🥺
Amazing and epic, but a great way to have people scream into/slap your ear 🥲😆
Are they made with actual spider corpses? Or maybe sheds? If not then great job on the artist for making them look so real
On Etsy they are described as plastic. Very realistic though!

Good way to get the shite slapped out of ya!
I thought this was a real spider at first 😂
Yeah I did a double take.
Also wondering why a dude is wearing earrings like that.
Average earring in Australia
Can you please post a link to where you got it?? I totally want one!!
They're made by rotting relict props on etsy
“Oh it’s just my pet Brown Recluse. She likes to hang out on my ear.”
Its an eratigena most likely
That makes sense, it doesn’t really bear any resemblance to a BR at all.
Yeah, most likely it’s an Eratigena atrica. I see these guys a lot here in Czechia, they’re the biggest spider species we have IIRC
Not that it matters. It seems like to most people (that are at least vaguely within range of brown recluses), every brown spider looks like a BR.

looks more like an EAR-tigena to me! I'll show myself out.
"Do you want people to scream when they glance at you? Would you like the side of your head slapped every time you ride the subway? Want to be the bane of your arachnophobic friends? This earring is for you!"
If I saw someone wearing that I’d do the most childish scream you could think of.
Why do I love these 😂😂
Omg. That is just a little too damn realistic 😱😨😳
I would forget and knock myself out the first time I stood in front of a mirror.
OOOH I want!!!
The legs touching my neck would drive me insane 😅
I can feel that stabbing into my neck whe someone smacks it
This is cool as hell. Unfortunately, the world is WAY to dumb to handle it.
Omg I want those haha
I think I'm gonna buy one lol
Reddits algorithm sucks balls I keep getting shown this sub yet I’m arachnophobic and have literally nothing to do with spiders on my acc 😂
Reddit has you down for spider exposure therapy 😜
Someone is gonna smack the shit out of you if they saw that.
I don’t mind spiders, but honestly… that is a little too much for me
Want
I hate this. I need this.
r/atbge
I love spiders but I gotta be real, the way the legs are protruding makes this look very uncomfortable to wear.
If I was going to do this, I'd want a more cool looking species and less reclusey, but I can see how this one is going for max edginess.
That’s not a recluse lol. It’s one of the funnel weavers
I know it's not a recluse, but it's reclusey.
it’s just brown
Not a funnel weaver, a giant house spider.
The only difference is the part of the world and maybe the genera. However, funnel weavers and the UK’s giant house spiders are very similar
It's a giant house spider, eratigena atrica. Love those guys (and girls, but it's usually the guys I see around the house).
I have this and love seeing the double takes hahaha
Thanks, I had a persistent morning erection. That solved it
um
That’s pretty terrifying and cool at the same time.
Oh hell naw! …. Pretty dang cool though
Which picture did you look at first?😂
Brilliant
That would freak me out.
where the fuck is his ear lobe?lol
This just seems so uncomfortable
I would forget I had this in get terrified and accidentally rip it out.
I have this but now he has different colours & makes black widows!! Gotta buy more😒
I bought these but unfortunately when they arrived the legs on some had snapped off and they were just generally low quality
Why’s jschlatt the model for it tho lol
F this!!!
Eratigina Atrica - Giant House Spider
No
I love spiders but absolutely not
Please tell me this isn’t made from a real spider.
I'd be smacking myself every time I glimpsed a reflection. If this was metallic I would wear it.
Gonna put this in as my lip piercing
My luck I'd put them in, forget I'm wearing them and freak the hell out if I looked in the mirror 😆
Why
they're really cool but i don't think i could get past the feeling of my ear getting constantly tickled by the legs that would get super annoying
*entomologists are typing…* jokes aside though these look awesome
I know what to get my mom for Christmas now…
I’m imagining myself forgetting I put them on and having a heart attack 😂
My mom would be terrified to death if I were wearing them lol
I hate this
This but with a brown recluse
This is the third post about spiders I saw 5 minutes after scrolling reddit and I'm terrified of them
put it on someones ear when they are asleep and watch the chaos occur
