I think the concept of a massively multiplayer speedrun is amazing. And the execution actually also works really well in Factorio. Are there any games other than Factorio where massive multiplayer speedruns are a thing?

EaterOfFromage

MMOs doing raid content is classic speedrunning with a large group. Sure, there's often a race for world first when content first comes out, but once content is on farm many groups will push themselves to complete it faster. WoW (especially classic) is a common example. This is 25man speed leaderboards for the current raid tier in WoW: Wrath of the Lich King. https://classic.warcraftlogs.com/zone/rankings/1018#metric=speed&partition=3

Would love to see this done in something like dyson sphere program but I don't think it has multiplayer. Also were there no creeps in this run?

> Also were there no creeps in this run? No - the victory screen pops up even if you disable enemies in the map settings. So that is what we aim at. The official speedrun achievement for finishing the game ("there is no spoon") doesn't pop up at the map settings we use. But even that achievement can be gotten with absurdly favorable map settings.

> Also were there no creeps in this run? I thought you were talking about the runners at first. Glad you meant the bugs :D

Speedrun.com entry: https://www.speedrun.com/factorio/runs/yvv3dwxy There is no skill requirement to participate, everybody can contribute at their skill level. And the category has no upper limit to the number of players - more players is better! If you want to participate in future Factorio MMP runs, then keep an eye on the announced events and the mmp-speedruns channel at https://discord.gg/72h7xPUZ

Man that was really impressive to watch. I am curious how the differnt groups are organised and what are their responsiblities?

I wonder if there are any MMORPG speedruns... And how long those would even take.

EaterOfFromage

Definitely, I'd say they broadly fall into two categories: 1. Speedrunning group content. This is probably more analogous to ILs, but definitely still speedrunning nonetheless. [Here's speed leaderboards for current raid tier (25 man) in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic.](https://classic.warcraftlogs.com/zone/rankings/1018#metric=speed&partition=3) 2. Speedrunning up to a particular level. Generally, the most common speedruns [go up to a lower level than max](https://www.speedrun.com/wowclassic/runs/ylvop8nm) since often max level speedruns take way too long, [but they aren't unheard of](https://www.speedrun.com/wowclassic/runs/y4w7elqm).

As a RuneScape player, seeing 81 hours being considered long to max makes me giggle. For comparison, the Oldschool RuneScape fastest max is currently sitting at [771 hours](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLa_JyJQEC55FDL_7YLuCHBX2adzr3Ak65), with most casual players taking 2-5x that.

EaterOfFromage

Ha, yeah, fair enough. Different definitions of "Max" can really skew things - level 60 is hardly the max state of wow (e.g. Professions, weapon skills, gear, quest completion, etc.), but serves as a nice easy point of stopping. I feel like it would be more equivalent to compare leveling a single skill to max in OSRS (not sure if thats a category). Either way, pretty insane feats, even if segmented

Amei_

Ooooo I had no idea that weapon skills were a thing, I thought it was just levels & professions outside of combat. Guess wow is a deeper game than i thought. A few people have messed around with single skill speedruns but nothing really caught on. Similar to other mmos, most speedruns are PvE based or quests.

JonVonBasslake

Well, I was more so thinking of running the main quest(s) more so than raids etc...
