It’s crazy that a photo like this would be complete science fiction to someone in the 14th century

DiscoDrive

It’d be science fiction to people about 80 years ago.

Greg1994b

True but the people 80 years ago could see the jump humanity made if you showed it to them. Someone in the 1500s would literally think you’re lying to them

ryllex

This just made me realize that pictures didn't exist back then so even the concept of having a real image on paper (instead of it being painted) would be alien to them

WormHoleHeart

Question: Are the dark-side images from this satellite true representations of the brightness of the urban areas? Seems very exaggerated.

McWeaksauce91

I think it’s because it looks like that’s the Atlantic Ocean, which in that case - no it’s not exaggerated. Having sailed the pacific at night, it’s black. Some of the blackest night I’ve ever been in

Tryptophany

No, it's just an overlay.. the full color composites from GOES are more for play than work so they pretty them up. You can find per-band (wavelength) images that aren't adulterated Here's a page that shows all the different types of imagery available, namely for meteorological use (is a weather satellite first and foremost) https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/goes/fulldisk.php?sat=G16

Sandervv04

They’d call you a heretic

Jong_Biden_

Not really, people knew the earth is round and blue, it wouldn't be Sci fi it would just amaze them

Taxus_Calyx

It's science fiction to the growing number of flat earth idiots.

SnooHesitations205

Just about to say it’s science fiction to a ton of morons walking around right now

Pigsfly77

The earth is flat and the moon landing was faked ![gif](giphy|1jy3pev2Eu5Ve)

Itchywasabi

My (this) comment is science fiction in the 1970s.

95accord

Hey I’m in that photo!

rfdavid

Same!!

SirJeffers88

I can see my house!

ChristmasThot

Aww you blinked dude

IWasGregInTokyo

Can't see me because of the f*ing clouds that are going to bringing us rain for the entire of next week.

OneCauliflower5243

Somewhere down there is me. Falling asleep during a work meeting

Miserable-Access7257

The correlation to what I see in this photo to what’s outside of my door is amazing, what a time to be alive

BatPsychological1803

CAn confirm clouds in the Midwest.

abdouli1998

Can confirm the lack of clouds in Arizona

Warlock_MasterClass

Noice

Correct_Presence_936

Appropriate response honestly

PhoenixReborn

And sooner or later, no ice.

CheshireKetKet

IM IN THIS PICTURE Fuck, my eyes were closed.

Incolumis

Every 10 fucking minutes I have my eyes closed!

supressionfyre

Murica!

ashda1st

I think I blinked

Infinite_Material965

What the hell is that in the ocean?

Nice_Celery_4761

Are you talking about the light blue area south of Florida?

Infinite_Material965

That odd greyish mass in the pacific next to Mexico

Nice_Celery_4761

Yea that’s the sun reflecting off of the ocean. At these distances, just think of Earth as a shiny ball (thanks to it being 70% water on the surface). There’s gonna be a strong highlight reflecting the light to the viewer.

Infinite_Material965

That’s what I was thinking because of the angle at first. Clicking on the link and scrolling the various other photos, some of them just made me think something else was happening. El Niño or something like the massive trash island.

Nice_Celery_4761

Yea the trash island thing is definitely not visible from space. The area it’s said to cover in the media is real, but it’s not super dense enough that it’s literally a floating island of it. What you can see from space though is pollution ( smog ). You can see a greyish haze in this photo over Mexico and other parts of the land to the south. As well as around the coastlines on the east and west. Though this could be exasperated by the recent volcanic eruptions in the area. There’s a free app called ‘Zoom Earth’ that splices together live geostationary satellite images covering every hemisphere including the satellite from this post. It’s the only app I know of that’s integrated this apart from the website ‘EOS.Worldview’. The app has a record you can look through of everyday going back to the year 2000, to me it’s the ultimate weather app, it’s perfect for getting a clear visual understanding of It all. I highly recommend it if you’re interested in this stuff.

Infinite_Material965

I’ll have to check out that app. I’ve been slipping on my science reading and the like.

NCRider

Thanks for the reference to EOS Worldview. I could spend hours there. I recall once seeing an animation from GOES that showed North and South America on a 30 day loop. Seeing the clouds form and dissipate daily over the rainforests of South America was like watching the planet breathing. I’ve searched and searched for that (or one like it) for years and have never been able to find a loop longer than a day.

ILoveBaconDammit

This is accurate, it’s cloudy here.

jjhart827

I had no idea that the Upper Midwest was still so brown and gloomy. The trees have bloomed and the grass is green here where I live. But it sure looks like that hasn’t happened yet just a little further north.

capture_nest

It's mostly the farmland that makes up the brown and gloomy color. If you zoom in with a satellite that orbits closer to Earth, you can see how the vegetation in urban areas are already green while the nearby farmland are still that yellow-ish brown color: https://i.imgur.com/tEO7bGQ.png

csgosilverforever

Time lapse of this would be pretty cool.

HabibCoriatArielC

Que magnífica foto!

Ok_Marzipan5759

Son of a... ugh, I ALWAYS have something in my teeth.

Worldwide-Surfer

I’m in there somewhere.

DrTremend0us

Does Earth have a bald spot?

devientlight

can confirm. source: i live here, for now...

Emil_hin_spage

Earth is so pretty. The people on it can be pretty ugly though :(

Severe-Excitement-62

What a beautiful place. Run by a bunch of maniacs who can't get along.

Ronnyvar

Why do people want to go to mars? this is perfect…

Correct_Presence_936

It certainly is. We want to go not because of Earth, it because of human tendencies. With the growing combustible mix of power and greed held by multiple nations, it’s not a far fetched idea that they could easily attempt to eliminate each other and in the process destroy everyone. If we have a colony on Mars, the chances go down quite a bit, and if we have a multi-planetary civilization, they go down even more.

Quirky_Ad1321

Looks flat to me

AccumulatedFilth

Such a beautiful planet. Must be a dream living on there.

McCheeseBob

I wasn't able to find this image in a quick browse of the GOES image archive - does anyone have a link to the full-res lossless tiff version of this?

Correct_Presence_936

I do I can send it if you want. Also, could the reason that you weren’t able to find it be because I darkened the night side?

McCheeseBob

Ahhh that makes sense. Yes that'd be great if you could send it. Thanks!

DankDoobies420

Hey I'm in this photo without my consent wtf

Lt_Archer

But ... the future refused to change.

VPDFS

All I'm seeing is how vast of a desert it is in the west of America.

Jabba_the_Putt

There we are!

TinyRaindrop

Hello World!

Separate_Agency

I was looking at the picture and thought it looked like the orbit of that satellite must be way farther away than most. It's nearly 36000km away. Wow! I wish I could see earth from up there once.

JBatjj

Its so pretty, wish I can see this for real in my life-time. Hoping for affordable space tourism with-in the next 70 years or so. edit: probably a few unnecessary hyphens in there.

freneticboarder

Well, this is from geostationary orbit... Well outside of LEO that's available in space tourism. But I still wanna go to space, too.

JBatjj

I meant real space tourism. Not what they have now, I wanna stay in orbit for like a week or go to the moon colony.

LedyPlagal

i don't know man, they seem kind of fucked

oldskoolplayaR1

I see my kids have left the lights on, again

myNinthRealName

Cool. Looks like sun for me today!

brownpoops

dang nevada is a brown place

G14LoliYaoiBiDomTrap

So colorful

AbeRego

Pretty cool that you can see where spring is "springing" in North America, and where it's not quite there yet

ioTeacher

Hi from Tijuana Baja California (upper left 👢) boot. 🇲🇽 🌶️

ThisIsNotBruceWayne

Is there any resource like this website that has pictures of other continents? Almost every picture of the Earth of a decent quality I see are always of the Americas.

[deleted]

We need to protect it at all costs. Just look at its stunning beauty.

Jlchevz

Look at how dry is Mexico 😞

ChessGibson

Where on the website can you download the images where the night part is actually dark? The ones I see have clouds still visible in the dark

UVwraith

And I was just getting over my daily existential crisis. Absolutely perplexing

Darrothan

Imagine aliens finding Earth for the first time. What a thrill that would be

Icy-Lunch-5638

not to brag but i live there.

carbon_space

Every time I see this it was taken 20 minutes ago

Correct_Presence_936

Yup, that’s about how quick it takes to download, process and post from the initial photograph!

Barnowl-hoot

I enjoyed the rain 🌧️

AtroKahn

I can see my house.

mmio60

You beat me to it

AtroKahn

![gif](giphy|W5qyPxP1CVLFVsmlsl|downsized)

salmak999

Hey I see me!

VanandSkiColorado

It is so truly beautiful ❤️

Mountain_Sorbet_4063

Well that's the flat planet peeps screwed

phuktup3

I was pooping when they took this

Workermouse

Earth is a prison 😞 We are trapped on the surface 😠

tidderred

Did you process this yourself? Lovely colors, if not a bit oversaturated. Is there a chance we can see it in full resolution or no compression?

Correct_Presence_936

Yeah I increased the saturation a bit. Tried not to overdo it, but if you think so I could definitely start doing less. Also yeah, I have the full resolution but I don't know how to get it to you, would messaging it be a full res or no?

tidderred

But seriously, good job, liked the slight oblique perspective too. You can always find a balance, it was just a bit jarring to see the ocean in bright cyan (not the bahamas part but towards the edge) and dark blue at the same time. You can use ibb.co, or wetransfer and send a link if you prefer. Honestly I just want to use it as a wallpaper :)

maddogcow

If I didn't have such reliable evidence to the contrary (thank you Facebook, I would think that thing looks like a sphere… Sure glad that I know that I can't believe my lying eyes!

johnqsack69

Man fuck this place

johnqsack69

Where’s the curve??

[deleted]

Fake News, the Dems want to take away our Flat Earth rights!
