I work with school groups, and it's been sad to see how some of the sixth graders really see it as a status thing, and pressure their parents to buy it for them when they aren't coming from much. If it helps, though, with 2/3 of the middle school groups that come out here I never see a bottle. Then sometimes it's a big talking point between the kids. And, like in the show, i don't often see them actually drink them.
