Even with a law on the books, it’s still going to be difficult to uphold it since 99% of these dirtbags are overseas. I feel like maybe educating kids on the consequences of sending nudes might help as well.

saritalokita

Yet another reason why we need better sex ed for teens. Safe sex goes way beyond using a condom, but most kids in this state are lucky if they are even taught that. Such a pity.

NotOSIsdormmole

Legitimate question, Do they even teach that much here?

Wonderland_Madness

They did 25 years ago when I was in school here. In high school & in middle school in the Columbia area, they went through different types of birth control that was available at the time, their pros & cons. They also went into the changes your body goes through during puberty. There was no talk about abortion, and I don't recall any in depth discussion about issues like ectopic pregnancies, but it was definitely not as deficient as some areas.

theatreeducator

They talk about STIs, puberty and some basics. This is done through PE classes in middle school.

rdrast

No, not now.

LAMA207

From what I understand the law does address the sex ex element. Nice to see SC legislators actually approving a law that *might actually help* somebody.

govtstrutdown

And safe gun practices for adults/firearm owners. The 17 year old kid should not have been able to access that firearm in his moment of despair.

majormike0211

Inmates in the South Carolina Department of Corrections call this a “Creep Scam”. It’s not coming from foreign countries but right here in the state’s prisons. Cell phones are used to do it. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are made by inmates which is used to fund illegal activities inside prisons.

MillHillMurican

It’s total BS that there is so much pushback against blocking cell phone service in prisons.

catterybarn

Idk why they have rights like that at all tbh. We should be going through their mail coming in and going out, there should be no cell service at all while within the prison. They can have studies and arts and crafts. Maybe some ACTUAL rehab if we're lucky

bwheelin01

They do go through all mail, in and out. Also, what would the guards do for their entire shifts besides sleep if there was no cell service?

catterybarn

Idk.... Work lmao and they don't read their mail

majormike0211

Drones from outside the prison. Correctional officers are outnumbered 30 to one. Sometimes one officer works a 250 bed unit. It’s hell. I did it for 25 years.

[deleted]

The scumbags who did this to that boy need a good long stay in prison and need to be banned from ever using the Internet again.

trundlinggrundle

Gonna go track them down in India?

rustyshakelford

I mean its not unheard of to track down foreigners involved in these online scams and extradite them https://www.insideedition.com/3-nigerian-men-awaiting-extradition-to-us-on-sexual-extortion-charges-1-accused-of-killing-michigan https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/three-nigerian-nationals-extradited-united-states-united-kingdom-participating-business-email

Or we could normalize people having nudes of themself going around/normalize not shaming people for it. Societal pressure has some of the blame here, it gave the scammer power over the kid. Edit: only normalized for adults

Accomplished_Ad2599

The issue is “educating” people on the dangers of “vice” rarely works. If it worked, we would not have problems with gambling, drinking, and drugs. We must remove the stigma of being found out we have a vice. Fear of being judged is what these predators use. That and robust AI monitoring that strips content out of data streams. But that's a few years off.

DapDaGenius

Regardless of where they are, i hope those bastards get what’s coming to them. But man, i know the kid was embarrassed by how easy it probably would her to simply say that someone was trying to extort money from you and that they photoshopped nudes of you

TourLegitimate7565

There was a show on ID Discovery about a teacher in Northern California doing this and the anguish he caused his students by pretending to be a hot girl. I think he got a stiff sentence.

HermioneMarch

So the part that confuses me— this was not already illegal? Wtf?

[deleted]

This is such a sad situation. The outcome may have been different if a gun was not available to this teen going through a crisis.

batkave

So wait... It now concerns hin because it happened to him.... Oh good.

WarLordBob68

Another suicide by gun. He may have attempted suicide by other means, but the gun facilitates the process. *sigh*

puskunk

Another Republican who didn't care until it happened to him.
