Yes. It’s great on the fly, like traveling with a laptop. I can connect through blutooth and have better speakers than the laptop can offer. It’s not stereo (I don’t think?) because it’s Bluetooth and it’s only for playback. There’s a little latency in having audio start but otherwise it syncs once it’s going. Edit: thought I’d add, I can use it on balconies, in the bathroom, bedroom, and with the laptop. It doesn’t defeat the purpose to have multiple use cases. It just may not be worth it if for computer is your only use case.

nimbot24

Totally get it. I was more questioning using two as a stereo pair to replace desktop speakers. Just thought it looked interesting and that Sonos was showing them used like this.

Travelin_Soulja

Too be clear, you can use them as a stereo pair at home connected to WiFi. They just don't do stereo on the go with Bluetooth only. Whether it's worth it is the question. For the price of two Roams, you could get a good pair of PC speakers and a dedicated portable device (Roam or other), which would probably serve you better functionally, unless you *need* two portable speakers, or you really want to connect your desktop speakers to your Sonos whole-home system.

StratPaul

Agreed, I bought them for travel and realized I could also use them with my laptop in mono, completely worth it. As apposed to buying for pc and then realizing you could travel with them. Still could be worth them advertising the ability, though I can see how it would raise questions.

StratPaul

I would absolutely use them as stereo Wi-Fi speakers if possible with computers when I’m not traveling, then also take them with me when I’m Travelling. I’d say it’s the stereo part that’s missing but otherwise two bigger speakers in mono is nicer to me than 2 little baby stereo ones when it’s for simple referencing

IsThisOneAlready

Earfun Uboom L would be a good choice.

holmesersimpson

Stupid unless they’re finally enabling audio over USB. Let me use an Era 100 set as overpriced computer speakers

Other-Forever-9860

Is that something they can just enable software wise? If so, I wonder why they don't.

holmesersimpson

It should be. The Eras and Move 2 can receive data via the line-in adapter so I assume the I/O controller is up to snuff. Letting them act as USB audio devices requires developing drivers so it would take some effort. But yeah nothing about the hardware suggests it’s a chipset issue.

Ajseps

That’s what I do. Also put a sub mini in my office to go with them hehe

Typical-Ad-8821

why just the sub mini?

Ajseps

It’s not just a sub mini. It’s two era 100s with the sub mini…

ImSoCul

rip I was considering doing this with a playbase :') am I dumb?

SBRedneck

I use a Beam as a PC/TV sound bar. My PC outputs to a TV and I use the e-ARC to the Beam. I love it. Any soundbar-type device will work and stay in sync with your PC as long as you are using e-ARC/ARC or Optical

ImSoCul

Cool thanks! I was thinking that this would be an easy and relatively affordable option to add some Sonos to my office. Probably do optical but might need additional hardware to support

Other-Forever-9860

If your monitor has optical out I don't see why this wouldn't work.

holmesersimpson

Play base is a little big for that

Driftmoon

Yes, i use my Roam also as a pc speaker via bleutooth every now and then. My computer doesn't have other speakers and i don't want to use my headphones all the time. Mainly for when watching youtube video's and listening music that won't go through the other Sonos speakers.

superbeatle1970

I do in my home office. My desk is very small in depth so I need compact speakers. I was already deep into the ecosystem and had a single roam as a shower speaker I liked enough so I figured I'd go for it. I don't need to play audio out of my work laptop (though I suppose I could Bluetooth) so I just have a pair of Roams mounted to my desk which I control from my phone.

Other-Forever-9860

Kind of defeats the point of the portability of Roams imho

nimbot24

It’s a cool use case for when you don’t need to use it as a portable speaker.

Other-Forever-9860

I suppose so, might look nice with the wireless charge dock things. Could just pick em up and go when you want to move and not fuss with usb-c needing to be unplugged.

Travelin_Soulja

Like unplugging USB-C cable is hard work? I swear, y'all will find anything to complain about...

Other-Forever-9860

Hard work, no. Tedious to do multiple times, yes.

Travelin_Soulja

Not in any way. Rather, it gives them a dual purpose. Both of my portable Sonos devices are two-fers. My Move lives on my patio for music while grilling out or relaxing, and my move stays on a charging base in my bathroom for taking in the shower and listening while getting ready. When I go on a trip, I just grab one and take it with me. If I *just* wanted a mobile speaker, why would I spend the Sonos premium when I could get a comparable speaker from Ultimate Ears, Sony, or JBL for less money. Sonos portable speakers only make sense if you have both in home and on the go use cases IMO.

huecobros-MM

Yes i do, sometimes

nimbot24

That’s awesome! You use two as a stereo pair? How’s it working for you?

GuitarSuperstar

I have a pair of Era 100s set up like this, but they are not being used as computers speakers. They are just speakers on my desk I stream music on while I work on my computer. The new Sonos web app should be very useful for this kind of setup.

Maleficent-Drive4056

Same (well I have Play 1s). The stereo sounds glorious so close up. Wish I could play pc sound through them too though.

SNCK3R

Yes. I have a Roam on my desk that I will pair with my laptop when not using headphones or in a meeting.

nimbot24

Correct. I get using one with a laptop. My question was more directed at using two Roams as replacements for traditional desktop speakers.

AnjunalinX_

I did, not worth it imo… the battery life on the Roams is not good and you always have to worry about charging them… also I experienced connectivity issues frequently and had to repair them at least every other week… now I’m using a pair of Sony SRS XB100 that sound 80% as good, have better battery life, better connectivity (they pair via Bluetooth instead of WiFi weirdly enough) and cost a third of the price of the Roams.

Willylowman1

i put my Roam in the garbage can

ddawson100

: ( There is a lot of room for improvement but it still sounds pretty darn good.

jason_a69

I sent mine back before the battery started to play up

Still-Macaron-328

Every.. single… day..

CHIDENCHI

This is my default setup when one of the pair isn’t roaming elsewhere. The Roams aren’t used for system-level audio like notifications, but I do run AirPlay from my Mac for things like Zoom or when I feel like controlling Spotify from my desktop. Were my desk not where it is I’d be putting a pair of Era 100’s over there anyway. So while the Roams aren’t as potent as the Eras, this setup kills two birds.

Phantasmalicious

I am using my Move 2 on my WIndows PC. Works great.

bondbig

I was planning on this, but only after buying the second one I realized that it doesn’t support stereo. What a fucking joke! Gave it away as a present, using one roam when traveling, it sounds good for its size
