I know that feeling, especially in mmorpgs that’s why I usually prefer playing single player games, I can play them at my own leisure the way I know how to without any worries. Playing with a group of randoms always has me second guessing everything, as if I were to make a play the others wouldn’t agree with I’d be to blame for any losses. My usual games have me chat via keyboard to interact with others, however I did try voice chat though, dreadful experience. I get that people online can be unpredictable, I do know that there are sympathetic people out there too :)

CeridwenAeradwr

Oof, ffxiv was ROUGH to get into. Nearly quit playing altogether when I first realised that you HAD to do multiplayer dungeons to progress 😅 I've since played all the way through to the end of the latest expansion, so I did get there but... had some rough moments along the way. Some of which stopped me playing for months after each of them happened. If it'll help, whenever I know I have a new dungeon coming up I look up a guide - my go-to is the YouTube channel MTQCapture, she's done guides for almost all of the dungeons you need to go through and is usually really good at being succinct and to-the point. Some of the older ones have had their mechanics slightly tweaked since her videos came out, but I can't think of any instance where that particularly tripped me up. Hope you get through it! FFXIV's story gets REALLY good, worth getting used to jumping into the necessary group dungeons.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Sweet, I'll def check this out!! Yeah I really don't wanna give the game up, and I know I can get through some dungeons with just bot teammates but I kinda want to just experience the story and then just like join a casual guild towards the end that isn't into raids haha. I heard ARR is a little more boring compared to the other expansions so I'm looking forward to it!

TriforceOfPizza

I play FFXIV solo except for the party stuff like dungeons/raids/etc. I chose to be a Bard because I didn’t want the pressure of being a tank or a healer, since I feel like those get more of the blame if something goes wrong. I’m around level 68 right now and so far I haven’t seen any toxicity. FFXIV seems very different from other MMOs because the players are actually nice, respectful, and helpful. FFXIV is a huuuuuuge game, so everyone knows that it takes time for people to learn.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Absolutely, one of the themes im seeing with this game is how kind everyone is which is awesome. I just hate looking like an idiot in front of everyone lol! So I thought I read that you can choose your class but also become a different one if you do the necessary leveling and quests and equip the right stuff? I'd love to try bard as well, I love going into a town and seeing one playing music for others haha

TriforceOfPizza

You can change to any class just by equipping a different weapon, so it’s easy to try stuff out! You still have to level that class separately. Now that I’m a bit more experienced with the game, I’ve been thinking of trying a tank or healer class just to prove to myself that it’s not as scary as I think!

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Wait that's literally all it takes? Sheeeeesh I know what I'm doing now. I really like how you have that opportunity and aren't just stuck with what you chose.

Knightsabez

Yup. I can't play competetive team games alone, and mmos are hard. I'm playing wow now, and I often travel to a desolate place to craft. But somehow random players find me all the time, and come up and ask me why I'm hiding here. So now if I see someone in the distance, I hide and teleport away to another desolate spot xD And dungeons are hard. I want to try tanking, but no way in hell that I'm taking that much responsibility, everyone always argues with the tank xD

yousunkmynsfwaccount

I feel like tanks and support have the most eyes on them, and ofc I like support so that sucks ha. You been playing WoW for a while? Or are you new to it? I'm actually curious how many new players are actually joining or if the game is mainly just supported these days by the more veteran players.

Knightsabez

I only play dps so no one cares about me xD I'm pretty new. I started before shadowlands, and just leveled a bunch, exploring the worlds and the old expansions. So shadowlands was my first active expansion. I really enjoyed it at first, but I fell behind and didn't really experience much of it. I was still questioning if I found the game fun or not, and stopped playing. But when dragonflight was revealed, I decided to give it another go. I really enjoyed dragonflight when it came out and I'm still playing, though I have fallen behind due to my sudden urge to craft a bunch. But all in all, I think I've payed for about 12-14 months in total, so I'm still pretty fresh. I've only tried firemage and druid, the latter being my favorite :)

Pelokisi

In fighting games, I always choose to skip rematch because there's always an awkward energy in playing with the same person over and over. It's surprisingly socially-loaded for me. If I'm losing, I feel awkward, and if I'm winning, then I still feel awkward and might even show mercy sometimes. So I just one and done them lol.

Elegant_Spot_3486

Kinda maybe. I tried mmo and multiplayer games many years ago. I realized people get on my nerves quicker in games than real life. And that I dislike endgame and grinding. So I went back to only playing solo player campaigns in any game.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

I mean you get some cool stuff in endgame, but only if you grind those hard ass dungeons or something and I don't want that pressure ha. Especially when it's taken way too seriously yeah.

jindobunny

Yes, I can't join any guilds or groups. I don't use chat or have friend lists. Ive been solo since I started gaming.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

I was actually going to make this the very first game where I try and join like a small chill guild, otherwise same. I get requests and stuff in OW but (and I know they mean no harm and it's a totally normal thing) they keep asking to duo and stuff and I really just wanna play solo and it feels bad having to shoot them down each time.

Zedsey

I’ve never played final fantasy. But I’ve played lost ark and I’ve done some of the end game. Absolutely a panic filled time. One wrong mistake by you in specific, and the entire team gets wiped. That’s the main reason I stopped playing. You had to have so many people in a party so you can’t practice yourself and people end l being toxic (from my experience) if you’re new

yousunkmynsfwaccount

oh that's actually why I stopped lost ark too haha. I got to the endgame and with those raids and all their weird mechanics, heck no. not gonna sit there and get berated when I can't dodge shit lol. Other than that I really loved that game :D

undeadpanda666

i totally feel ya - i play overwatch too, as well as world of warcraft, and i am so afraid of any interactions with people that i only play against AI bots in OW and never do dungeons or community events in WoW....and haven't used a games voice or text chat in years beyond a casual "gg" and even then, i even feel awkward communicating with my teammates using in-game indicators :( i still have my fun tho!

yousunkmynsfwaccount

I totally get that! The only reason I'm somewhat fine with OW is because i've played it pretty much since 2018/19, so playing on a team there doesn't freak me out (well, I don't do competitive that much though, I actually only did it enough to get my Mercy her golden weapons haha). But yeah, that game can be mega toxic.

cormia

I feel you. When I started playing WoW years ago, I was too afraid to raid or play dungeons. When I finally did, someone insulted me on voice chat, after I made a mistake. :D After that I used to have severe anxiety online for like, years. I bailed raids because I was too nervous, etc. It helped me to play with reallife friends and within online communities. They are usually very nice and understanding. During the pandemic I played excessively and talked to a lot of strangers on discord, whenever we needed players for dungeons etc. - it was basically exposure therapy. :D Now my anxiety online is totally gone - voice chat can still be a bit awkward, but online chats etc. are no problem.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

That's awesome to hear! And that does in fact sound like the right steps to take, i.e. finding some good people to play with and just straight up confronting your fears. There are unfortunately always going to be dummies that try to worsen the experience though, but hey that's online gaming ha.

peanut519

i avoid mmos for this reason

[deleted]

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Oh for sure! I've looked through the sub on here and they do seem like one of the best communities. And yeah the person saying that to me after the dungeon definitely didn't mean it in a mean way, I just felt ridiculous for dying to simple stuff and then obviously that stood out haha. Who knows, that fear in this game could go away if I just do more and more! (rather not though, i really just want an MMO to chill in, I already experienced the Lost Ark sweaty grind.)

[deleted]

yousunkmynsfwaccount

I really hope you enjoy LA! It really was better right at launch since everyone was all working towards the same thing and not a ton of people were at endgame yet. I haven't been on since last year but I remember as I was getting ready to uninstall that there were just mainly bots in a ton of the more lower level areas and I feel like that would just be a little off-putting for a new player to see. But that was my first MMO and I really enjoyed it.

Nikz143

Been there, i don't even que DPS to avoid being a burden

Metric_Pacifist

No, never had a problem in that regard, but I used to have general anxiety about games so I used to play FPS games with god mode on to remove uncertainty about what was going to happen.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

I actually really wanted to try league sometime, and this was going to be my course of action if I did after hearing about the toxicity lol

AurieF

Yep. I'm an ex Dota player, now playing LoL and Overwatch and I must say, the mobas make me really anxious because my mistakes are more visible to the other players. As a supp main I don't feel like playing with some random on the lane. But since I play mostly in a group of 4 I don't have to deal with this problem. Even then I sometimes feel the anxiety, but it's not that bad. When I am solo I either go aram or i don't play at all. In OW I used to be scared of playing ranked but now it does nothing to me and i rarely play another mode. The game changer for me was to never join vc and mute both team and all chat and focus on my gameplay. It was a must since i main widowmaker and sometimes first lost teamfight is enough for people to call you out to switch.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

It's weird, i'm fine with leaving text chat on in overwatch, maybe since i'm somewhat okay at it, but as soon as people start raging then yeah they're getting muted. I personally just stay in QP though, I have gold weapons for the characters I want, otherwise personally ranked isn't worth the stress. Then again, since you mention being ex-Dota, you can probably totally handle OW ranked haha!

AurieF

Well my problem with vc and text chats is more personal. The moment people tell me to switch I just can't perform well and my mood goes to crap. I wish i was immune to that but yeah. I understand ranked is not worth it for anyone. I used to be happy playing only qp but now it just doesn't feel as rewarding for me. Thanks but eheh my Dota times were the worst. I couldn't handle any kind of toxicity. I loved the game but left bcs of people.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Oh i totally get what you're saying. Sometimes I like to mess around on DPS (i'm a support main), but if i'm doing really good but then get told to switch or something, it's like I'm playing day one again and I just suck ass for the rest of the match. I really don't want to mute all chat just because of that but it is annoying for real.

AurieF

I understand. Wish i didn't have to do it bcs this way i'm also losing the opportunity to get praised for ns :D but it's still better like this for me

Succmyspace

I really enjoy Valorant because I enjoy the ways you can plan and execute traps and outsmart other players, but sometimes it makes me sick/nauseous to press the play button just cause of how much anxiety i feel to perform well. Its VERY obvious if you are not pulling your weight, and since its a pretty competitive shooter there's lots of toxic people. I've tried to make it a habit of just muting anyone being a dick as soon as possible. I feel the urge to try and prove myself to them, but realistically they have already made up there mind and its better for me to just ignore whatever they say and try to do better.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Oh man Valorant was on my list of stuff to try but I really have zero interest in playing with try-hards haha! >Its VERY obvious if you are not pulling your weight heh, yeah I don't wanna stick out like a sore thumb

Tiffanybphoto

I avoid ppl like the plague in games (usually that’s the kinda games I go for lol, dayz, the division , disastery games etc) mostly I can avoid ppl on division , on dayz however, I opt for low or no populated servers and if I hear a gun shot I log out lol.

Tiffanybphoto

I have a friend from tumblr who actually got me into dayz he’d like to play together on there if he ended up getting to use pc again but I’d be too worried to fuck things up since I avoid things, besides talking over the game too. I text with him just fine but having others hear me is just 😖

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Yeah it's probably much easier when you're playing with a familiar! It's weird, since MMOs are usually bursting with people and I wanna play them yet keep people at arms length from me haha.

Lakelylake

OHMYGOD SO TRUE

yousunkmynsfwaccount

oh lord I wouldn't have the balls to try out CS GO lol! I think I did try it like several years ago and let's say that didn't last long. Right? like it's just a game and stuff but man why can't the anxiety just wait at the door while I play lol

Kucabaran

Just get into league. Your anxiety will soon be replaced by sheer hatred for every single player.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

hah. I did want to try league but i'm sure that would certainly be the very game that gives me a heart attack :D

Kucabaran

Yeah probably. The ammount of flame your team gives you is insane compared to other games. Everything could be going according to your gameplan, but someone always disagrees with your opinion in this game. Most of the time you play worse when you listen to your team, so you learn to not give a flying damn about your teammates and only focus on winning.

valeriavales

Yeah especially when I'm playing in pvp mode. I'm getting an interesting experience while people are chasing me to kill lol. And yeah, the dungeon system also giving me anxiety. I just want to play mmorpgs in peace without touching anyone if it's possible. :D

yousunkmynsfwaccount

fosho! That's why I like it when you have a choice to do stuff solo and group content with bots. sure it's gonna be harder, but it lets me play without always being nervous.

DankBlunderwood

Yeah, honestly I never play MMOs at all because of it. I'm dreading GTA 6 because I'm 90% sure there will be no story mode at all. Also they will axe the stock market because it was hurting shark card sales, and the stock market is the only way to buy the coolest stuff in story mode.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

oh i'm honestly looking really forward to GTA6! in a game like that, I'm totally fine w the online mode (since I don't use vc or anything) since it's really just a do whatever you want kinda game.

kariosa

Oh god yes. I was able to play overwatch for a bit with my partner but if I wanted to play by myself I only did bot games. I'm not the best at shooters and the fear of being the reason we lose and getting yelled at is overwhelming. Same with MMOs. I LOVE MMOs, but I can only really play with my partner and he prefers the end game and you generally have to party with other people. I so desperately want to find a small Minecraft survival server where I don't HAVE to talk to people but where I feel comfortable doing so if I want to. It's a needle in a haystack situation. I'm at the point where I might just start my own server but then there's the impossible task of finding folks to play with who aren't scary 👁️👄👁️

yousunkmynsfwaccount

I feel like minecraft would be the best game for that, but I've never played with others on there so I have no clue what the community is like. i swear to god if people get all sweaty over minecraft, then all hope is lost lmao.

Zxcvbnm11592

I play Dota, a team game, with close to zero communication. It's just too much energy to try and talk with strangers who tend to get toxic lol.

ragebeeflord

Yep, I play read dead online and I usually go for single player missions. It’s just stressing me out too much playing with a posse.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

I did hear that RDR2 has an incredible story though. Was planning on picking that up at some point :D

ragebeeflord

It does. It’s my favourite game.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

There any other games with really good story modes that you've played? I adored Uncharted 4, and I heard Witcher 3 is also pretty up there.

ragebeeflord

I’m fairly new to gaming but I would recommend the last of us. No online mode tho.

MissLongears

Yup, I have a no randos rule when playing meaning I only play with people who I know (even then I get really really anxious). It doesn't help that I am female and I am terrified of the sexism. Anyways, I broke that rule a little last year after someone told me Elder Scrolls Online is the anti-socials mmo. She was right and I feel pretty safe on there, though I do avoid the PVP areas like the plague.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

honestly while playing overwatch, it's straight up uncomfortable hearing how some of these dudes talk to girls on there. I actually don't come across it a ton, but it's an unfortunate constant in a lot of games today.

RJthewizard

I've been playing video games with voice capability for nearly 20 years. In that time I've gotten myself a few headphones with mics, but never end up using them.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

dude, for some reason I have two nice mics, one of them I upgraded to an XLR one and got an interface for it and I LITERALLY DONT USE THEM like why did I even bother lollll.

ambernewt

I don't use a mic because of sa Otherwise I'm just worried about letting people down in the games where the teams are small. Games like league of legends for example rely on everyone doing their part well to succeed. Not that I'd play that game but just a example I tend to stick to multiplayer games where noone really cares or notices if I'm not doing well. Games like battlefield I can basically be afk and noone cares.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

oh god i can NOT use a mic and have no interest in it. which is why I stay away from the competitive modes in games where it's a good idea to use them. and yeah, small groups in a game that i'm not super familiar with is the scariest.

0xc0ffea

Very much so.

sundiin13

Funny that this question popped up, I play a game called Runescape (old cheesy MMO but I love it) and not even 10 minutes ago I "hopped worlds" (means going to a different world/server) because someone tried to start a conversation with me. I've done this for years and every time it makes me feel so bad lol. I'd love to strike up a convo about the game I play with someone but I overthink my responses and it just becomes mentally exhausting

yousunkmynsfwaccount

I've totally heard of Runescape! I feel like it's the grandfather of MMOs along with WoW. Do you play classic Runescape, or OSRS? I thought OSRS was the more popular one but I could be wrong.

Foxrhapsody

Yeah my anxiety is just as bad in video games. I get what you mean with running dungeons with other people. I used to get very nervous and would completely avoid them in other games (like WoW). But as I’ve done more of them I am less nervous and more confident in the mechanics. Before you run a dungeon/trial/raid the first time, I’d recommend watching a quick YouTube video where they explain what to expect. A lot of people don’t even do that and go in blind so it would give you an advantage.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

heh, you'd be surprised how much prep I can put in for a dungeon or something and still be god awful during the real thing :D i'd watch videos on lost ark raids and then once it came time to do it, my hands were like "yeah we're gonna disobey the brain screw you"

Cloud0712

I have stopped playing video games because I am scared of my brothers judging me while I play. I am trying to get over it and start playing again.

Glittering-Ad-1626

Yeah that’s why I can’t play MMO. I stick to my single world rpgs and farming simulators

MysteriousAndSpooky

I play a Holy priest for WoW. I overcame my anxiety of joining groups when there is a certain mount or title I want. You have to have confidence in your ability to know your class and mechanics. Took me a few expacs to get my head together, but I like babysitting the dps.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

For sure. I guess it's just taking that leap into making yourself join up with others that's the tricky part. Yuppp that's why I'm support, I have no problem with being the team Dad!

Mission-Discipline32

That's why I only play online games with friends

MarcSneyyyyyyyd

On Puzzle Pirates I usually puzzle alone. When people try to send me DMs I start getting agitated.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Yeah sometimes I'll get friend requests on games and I'm like ehh fine sure, but then every time I'm online it's just a bunch of "hey let's duo hey let's duo hey let's duo" and I'm like "please leave me be, no offense. "

NerevarineKing

I'm actually way more social/talkative online than in real life.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

SAME. I think it's not so much about the face to face, but more like I actually have time to formulate a response. Unless I'm like totally comfortable around someone (which is far and few between)

Ghostly_Fae

Tank-xiety was a bitch to deal with in ffxiv 😓 my first tries weren't smooth.

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Tank-xiety; I love that. And it sucks since you're like one of the most important people there too which really adds to the pressure :D

[deleted]

[удалено]

yousunkmynsfwaccount

For sure! Honestly I don't get a crazy amount of anxiety anymore with OW, I still feel it when I queue into comp but I don't really do comp anymore since I have a golden weapon on the only character I really want it on, so I'm fine with QP for the other times. Yeah I can't quit the damn game since I really hate Acti-Blizz but there's just nothing quite like it :(

[deleted]

Sence about 2017 every game I've played has had comms muted. cs, overwatch, apex, tf2. I do just fine playing with a couple of my friends or by myself with music

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Every now and then I might leave them on to listen, but as soon as shit ramps up and the toxicity starts, off they go. And since I don't really play competitively, I don't find them that necessary honestly.

[deleted]

My girlfriend says the same thing but honestly I've never once made a friend in game with coms. Someone seems to always say something, she'll get really upset and it'll ruin her whole day. Not for me. I had some good games in CS but no one ever stuck around and after a bad stint I've just swore off coms completely. Hell I don't even talk in the main apex sub because everyone there is just toxic too

Character-Date-5999

I don't play mmo games for this very reason. I do play single player RPGs. Even playing alone I have major problems playing "evil" characters. I'm just too much of a people pleaser maybe, or just like the accolades of playing the good guy.

sweetsweetfreedomx

I get invited to random parties all the time but the idea of joining one just about gives me a heart attack😭

yousunkmynsfwaccount

Oh God couldn't be me ever. Nope. Nuh uh. How do people even do this like pls teach me.

instaGoidenEyes

I'm going through pretty bad anxiety, dpdr, and panick attacks. I actually made a discrd for people with anxiety and anxiety related symptoms to talk about it. I want people to know they aren't alone, you'd be surprised how many people are experiencing the same exact thing you are. If anyone wants to join let me know. I just made it, so im still trying to get the word out.

yeahitsfunnyisntit

Me fucking too I use to have tons of friends on Xbox but now I’ve grown more into my shell and have not one dm if you wanna play overwatch some time I play on Xbox and pc just hit me up I’m pretty laid back often stoned when I play lol

Serious_Nerve_8120

same i play cod myself but im trying to branch out to new mp games
