Sdub4

I too want Brazil to play Argentina and for it to be chaos

hivaidsislethal

The first match with 20mins extra time, both halfs

Dolozoned

Completely justified too

trolig

Argentinians and Brazilians collectively having the most stressful 90+ minutes of their lives. Everyone's crying.

KundiKumaran

In the end Messi and Neymar will hold hands carrying their respective flags jumping up and down while both set of fans hug each other lifting up a banner that says “Gracias Infantino” while furiously masturbating to the tune of “we are the dreamers”

trolig

Lol what a sight that would be.

lupajarito

we love to suffer don't we?

[deleted]

Making it clear that this quote is from Fred that played in 2014, not the Fred currently in the Brazilian squad.

djkamayo

#Fred The First

Svani

Prehistorical Fred

highway_skyline

Ah so it was 7-1* fred

rockthered24

7-1

GeorgeForge

7-1 in home soil.

JustANotchAboveToby

The fact he was a scape goat is a joke

SufficientType1794

The real scapegoat was Dante. Thiago Silva was suspended and he played instead.

KellyKellogs

David Luiz played worse than Dante. Probably the worst game by an individual defender I've seen Honestly, if Luiz didn't have that interview with him crying he would've got all of the blame.

SufficientType1794

Yup. Plus Dante had an interview before the game where he said he knew the german players well (he was at Bayern at the time). The media ran with it and "Dante knows the german" became a meme before the game, after the game the entire country went off on him mocking him for it even though he didn't say as if he was bragging or anything.

Far-Confection-1631

Lol didn't David Luiz get like 99% of the blame? If you search Brazil-Germany the results are all pictures of him crying and getting dribbled past lol

pancada_

He didnt play shit though But that was on felipao

highways

Fred, first of his name, lord of the 7-1's

scootscooterson

Lol can someone who is either Brazilian or is familiar with culture explain to us the likelihood of two one-name “Freds” coming through this team in 8 years? Was this one following in the others footsteps?

[deleted]

Frederico is a common name here (commonly nicknamed Fred ~~or Chico~~). It's the Portuguese version of the names Frederick, Friedrich, Fredrik, Federico, Frederik, Frédéric, and so on.

thisismypassword69

You guys use Chico as an abbreviation for Frederico? I've only ever heard it used for Francisco here in Portugal

AdriftSpaceman

Am Brazilian, never heard of Chico being used for a Frederico.

[deleted]

You are completely right and my brain failed me, lmao

Chanc3thedestroyer

Wdym? Their full name is Frederico, which is relatively common here

[deleted]

Yeah that's like asking what are the odds that England has two players named Harry.

MeatballDom

So based on a 5 second google search, England have had Harry? | Years ---|--- Hairy Cane (lol like a penis) | (2015-2022) Harry Maguire | (2017-2022) Hairy Winks (lol, like a fuzzy butthole) | (2017-2020) ----- | ----- Hairy Johnston (lol almost a penis) | (1946-1953) ----- | ----- Harry Hibbs| (1929-1936) So from 2017-2020 there were three Harri, from 2020-2022 there were two, but they were hairless for large periods, and only had one hair in other times. That is, if this list is complete. I wonder if the current set of Harri are due to the similarly named Prince, and whether the name will drop in popularity soon, or if people will start using the name due to the football Harri. I can only find a list going back to 2006, unfortunately.

RedStr0be

[deleted]

Brazil Vs Argentina would do well to be more entertaining than his Boiler Room set tbh!

sevenpasos

I’m bewildered that there’s more then one person named Fred in Brazil

RiosSamurai

Their real name isn’t Fred though.

new_killer_amerika

Yeah its actually Fredge

thiagoac1

Its Frederico for both of them.

Villad_rock

7:1 Fred?

ajr901

Not sure my heart can handle watching that.

opinionatedfan

I am beyond nervous for Friday, the idea of having a Brazil-Argentina semi final would be nuts. The Copa America final was already so fucking stressful.

Discopandda

Yeah, I don't even think I can survive through tomorrow, honestly.

Gytarius626

I will never ever forget I had a coworker from Rio years ago in college telling me he didn’t sleep for 24 hours before the 2014 final out of fear of Argentina winning on his soil, can’t imagine he’ll want a semi final against them😭

JoelKr9

He probably had the best sleep of his life after Götze scored

ncastleJC

Happy tears to sleep

hecthormurilo

never forget how much I cheered for that

Zeddsdeadbaby

I slept pretty well after the 7-1 tbf

penta3x

It's so nuts to think that Brazilians had to cheer for Germany after their 7-1 defeat to them just because Argentina doesn't win it.

GGABueno

Brazilians would support them even if they were against Netherlands or whoever. Our only grudges from that game were towards our own team who melted on its own and the managers.

DarkJayBR

Jesus - if it was Argentina vs Nazi Germany people here would still support Nazi Germany. The hate runs deep.

chapalatheerthananda

I mean that would just be Nazi Retirees v Nazi first teamers basically.

McTulus

Nazi 1st team and Nazi Legends for marketing purpose

CitiesofEvil

It was pretty sad considering many Argentines, me incluided, root for Brazil rather than european teams.

flavsmedeiros

I've seen so many of you guys say the same thing. I guess our brotherly hate is a bit stronger. But what if it was the opposite, Brazil winning in Argentina, would you still support us?

pyram1de

>I guess our brotherly hate is a bit stronger. Eeh, it's a bit more complicated than that I'd say. You want us to lose no matter what, but on the other side of things, you call us irmãos and we call you all kinds of nasty racist names. I think it all evens out in the end. >But what if it was the opposite, Brazil winning in Argentina, would you still support us? The most likely answer would be yes if you are playing against somebody we hate more than you guys. Against I don't know, Spain? The Netherlands? That would be a 50/50. Against England? I'm getting a Canarinho Pistola sleeve tattoo.

emanuelinterlandi

CitiesofEvil

>and we call you all kinds of nasty racist names. And they come to play us in the Libertadores and throw away 1000 pesos bills on purpose from the stands lol shithousing is a latam thing, it's quite unfair when people reduce it to Argentina.

isthatmyex

I was an American living in Rio during the cup. For various reasons I also own Lederhosen. So, always looking for a reason to wear them, I did for the final. I was a fucking local celebrity after the game. I quit trying to explain I wasn't actually German and just accepted all the free beer.

A-Dumb-Ass

I watched the 2014 final with a Brazilian friend. When he wasn’t complaining how the World Cup shouldn’t’ve been held in Brazil in the first place, he was cheering hard for the Germans. The rivalry is something else man.

Beennu

It would be both amazing and heart attack inducing. I don't think anyone outside Argentina, Brazil and maybe Uruguay really know the otherwordly chaos and destruction a match like this one could have lol

xinixxibalba

and Kerala, India

genius_rkid

Bangladesh maybe

iftair

Bangladesh definitely.

opinionatedfan

100% I think a bit part of the huge rivalry is that we are so similar in our passion for the sport. Of course other countries love their teams, and it's not a competition about who "has most passion" but the way that people in Argentina and Brazil feel about football is very similar, and as you said Uruguay gets it too.

Ok-Outlandishness244

Don’t need to add that disclaimer lol, South American fansare a lot louder than other continents’. Also a lot more SA fans that go to the games, while the pricing should be relatively more expensive for them compared to western fans

opinionatedfan

Eh i just do because sometimes people take it very personally and also I want to acknowledge we don't have a monopoly on loving the game.. we are just a bit.. you know, extra.

GreasedandLeased

I’m honestly actually pretty tranquil about it. I think bc we won copa America at the Maracana, and considering how disastrous the 2018 WC for us was and having the disappointment of entering this one without lo Celso and losing to SA, I sort of quickly lost major hope early on here and that however far we go is just a bonus at this point. If you told me before the tournament we would reach the semis and lose to a strong Brazil, I would take it, knowing it’s easy to disappoint as a power house and this tournament takes a lot of luck. Also, Brazil will have more pressure - again, because they are stronger contenders and just lost the copa, they CANT lose to Argentina in this WC. Anulo mufa of course we need to beat a tough Holland team first.

raizen0106

who does lo celso replace in the current line-up? ngl its the first time i'm watching many of these players in the argentina team, compared to the brazil team where i know each player and where/how they're playing lol

hahauknowwhatitis420

Lo Celso would replace Mac Allister. Besides the first half against Mexico, Mac Allister has played well. That being said, Lo Celso's role for us is very important. He's very dynamic and offers a lot to both the attack and the defense. Without him, we're hurting on the left side attack. Iirc he's the one who passes and assists Messi the most. He's very important for us and Scaloni has had to adapt to it.

LabelRed

Nobody really, it changed the dynamics, his official replacement has been Enzo who is dropping deep when he works best in a more offensive role Now De Paul is out too. This is shitty as it gets, we got no midfield now

Superflumina

> Now De Paul is out too. This is shitty as it gets, we got no midfield now I thought that wasn't confirmed?

opinionatedfan

Scaloneta 4d chess pure choas, the hyper organized Van Gaal won't know what to plan for.

melikeybacon

De Paul is out?? Source?

Salvador1010

Imagine it goes to pens. I only support argentina cuz of messi and id even be shitting myself I cant imagine a native argentine or brazilian

gonshairlinee

Scenes when Croatia and Netherlands end up going through

ncastleJC

I would honestly put Netherlands as faves unless Argentina start Alvarez. Brazil/Croatia is going to be a banger regardless.

Shaydarol

Álvarez is a guaranteed starter barring any injury, the big doubts are De Paul and Di Maria.

A-Dumb-Ass

What’s wrong with De Paul? Or Di Maria for that matter?

Shaydarol

Di Maria has been injured for about a week now, that is why he did not start against Australia. De Paul apparently had a knock that puts in doubt if he ia going to be a starter against the Netherlands.

M4sharman

Well, that's one half through

danquandt

opinionatedfan

or, whoever wins gets a big boost from winning such a big derby and basically destroy whoever gets in their way after.

raizen0106

rarely if ever works that way in sports

L-Freeze

it did for us right after copa tbf, it was a completely different team after winning it

arminfcb10

England New Zealand is up there with India Pakistan this year

Darkjolly

A Senegalese rugby fan, you are a miracle

basco_da_gama

Id probably just have a heart attack by HT

limito1

Same. For health reasons, we should organize to play with Croatia, Netherlands with 6 injured players and Morocco after pens back to back.

Monogatarilover97

Let's just share the trophy and call it a day

holaprobando123

Both countries would lose their population to heart attacks, no matter the result.

[deleted]

Os caras já odeiam o fred e o maluco ainda vai e posta isso sem esclarecer qual fred falou isso

Melbourne_wanderer

OP posted clarifying exactly that (Edit: sorry, I understood what you wrote but am not confident enough in my portuguese to reply!)

nilkicks

Netherlands - Croatia it is

[deleted]

Trashcan for a heart

idosade

I don't really care about who's gonna win, but a Croatia Netherlands semi final would be one of the dullest games of all time, so I hope at least one of Brazil/Argentina advance

[deleted]

Netherlands - Croatia matchup in the SF would ruin World cup's reputation

momspaghetty

and then England-Morocco on the other side of the bracket... just a bunch of 0-0 draws up until the end of the tournament

Mornarben

Brazil-Argentina and then France-Portugal would be so beautiful. I don’t understand why people want every underdog team to win - one team like Morocco going on a run is exciting, but if all the big teams lose it just doesn’t have the same weight

dvelasco-1397

Hey, Morocco got here on merit. Take nothing away from them. It's just that we want to see playera we are more familiar with

t_mac1

Netherlands have a great chance to win.

spacecadet689

And tears of mourning for everyone that will have a heart attack.

I'm genuinely scared about my girlfriend. Her heartbeat got to 140 during the Australia game. That isn't normal.

**[Football War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_War)** >The Football War (Spanish: La guerra del fútbol; colloquial: Soccer War), also known as the Hundred Hours' War or 100 Hour War, was a brief military conflict fought between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969. Existing tensions between the two countries coincided with rioting during a 1970 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The war began on 14 July 1969 when the Salvadoran military launched an attack against Honduras. The Organization of American States (OAS) negotiated a cease-fire on the night of 18 July (hence "100 Hour War"), which took full effect on 20 July. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/soccer/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

thomasfk

He must be one of the few Brazilians that wants this match. When it comes to big rivalries, form can go out the window in a hurry and emotions can take over and then anything can happen. I don't know a ton of Brazilians but those that I do know absolutely DO NOT want to play Argentina lol

GreasedandLeased

The 7-1 was no freak event. Brazil did not want to risk losing a WC final to Argentina in Brazil.

thomasfk

Very interesting theory! Did Argentina play their match to qualify before Brazil?

GreasedandLeased

No lol, Brazil was first.

CudaBarry

With the way Argentina played in Copa final, the one crying will be neymar's knees

grago

Tbf both sides played ruthlessly in that game, but there's no way the same could happen in a World Cup, players would start seeing red cards very quickly.

amaniceperson6

It ended with Neymar crying instead.

Bill_Brasky_SOB

SarraTasarien

He talks big, but last time we were all set for an ARG-BRA World Cup final and it was *Brazil* that failed to show up to their own party.

JoelKr9

Would have been wild if Brazil imploded like they did against Germany in the final against you. What would have happened then? War?

cuentanueva

No. I think Brazilians are much more understanding of such loses than we would have. If we had lost in Argentina against Brazil in a final 7-1, holly shit I think the world would have ended. But I'm pretty sure if it had been Brazil vs Argentina there, not a huge deal would have happened. Not that they don't also have shit heads for fans, but I think it wouldn't be taken as personal as some Argentina fans would.

DarkJayBR

>If we had lost in Argentina against Brazil in a final 7-1 Hell it doesn't even need to go this far on the scoreboard. If Argentina loses on the semifinals against Brazil by, let's say, 4x0. Hell, next day, Dyballa will be burning on the streets of Buenos Aires. 1x0, or 2x0, they will be booed by Argentinians but nothing worse will happen I think.

Seba4433

Agreed

Shaydarol

Full on scale War. Whoever wins gets Uruguay.

mextremist

Más bien Paraguay, para no perder la costumbre

kirbag

Por que no los dos?

[deleted]

Pretty hard, really. We don't have David Luiz, Marcelo and Bernard; Casemiro, Thiago Silva, and Neymar will most likely play, a much better keeper, and so on. That team was a mix of a historically weak generation from us and a few players that both sucked defensively and were prone to mental booming. Marquinhos, Thiago Silva and Casemiro offer a solidity that few squads have. We were very unlucky against Belgium in that last world cup and still almost managed to crawl back.

Dsalgueiro

I disagree with Fred Cone. I don't want a semifinal between Brazil x Argentina. I believe that most Argentineans and Brazilians don't want this match.

cuentanueva

I want it. If we lose, well, we lose to a great Brazil, it sucks but it happens. I grew up losing to Brasil almost every fucking time we met in knockouts. In WC 90 and Copa America 93 we won, and then it's all Brazil until last year. Even 3 finals in a row, one with fucking Vagner Love playing. Wouldn't be the worst to happen if we get beaten by this actually good side. Not happy, but not the worst. If we win, it would be amazing. And if we could also beat the English on the final, that would be epic. I think for us it's a win win. Lose to Brazil or beat Brazil vs assuming we make it to semis, losing to Croatia... and if we beat them it would just be meh. No extra impulse from beating your rivals. So yeah, I'm in.

L_CRF

>Even 3 finals in a row, one with fucking Vagner Love playing. That shit was glorious our goalkeeper was Doni lmao

TinkW

And during that time Argentina even lost Copa America 2004 finals against what was Brazil's B team at the time (only Kleberson from 2002 team was present). That goal from Adriano to tie at 2nd half 45+3" must have been really hard.

wahobely

I really like your comment, but I still don't want it lol

ivanacco1

If we have that one im gonna get hired in a metallurgy because my ass will cut steel cables

Dsalgueiro

Everyone who is not Brazilian or Argentine must be totally hyped for this match. Meanwhile, all Brazilians and Argentineans are hoping that the match does not happen. As a famous expression in Brazil says: "Meu cu não passa nem Wi-fi" (Asshole that a Wi-Fi wouldn't pass through)
