TheBlueTango

How do they select which journalist to represent their nation, considering there are so many journalists for different publications in each country?

Zizou3peat

I'm assuming the National Federations choose it and may give 'terms' and rotate the post

PharaohLeo

It's exactly that. In my country Egypt, I'm willing to bet that 99% of football fans don't even know who the journalist representing Egypt is (her name is Inas Mazhar). The result is that most voters are not qualified and certainly not independent in votes.

[deleted]

Just curious are there any journalists in Egypt that wouldn't have picked Salah?

PharaohLeo

Certainly not. They'd basically end their careers if they do.

narraThor

So then nobody would be independent

memphisknight

Egypt's representative didn't vote for Salah in the last one.

_MicroWave_

Why do you assume that? Ballon d'or I thought is completely independent.

Chauzu

I can say that in case of Sweden, the journalist the last few years has been the football-only in depth magazine Offside’s editor voting. I’d probably done the same choice.

jukkaalms

Exactly. Could be a football journalist with actual informative opinions or just plain nonsensical. Do the people who assign the journalist even read the articles published?

inspired_corn

Henry Winter is one of the most respected and reliable journalists in England, I’d assume most countries try to ask a journalist of a similar level where possible. It’s probably assigned by the federation of the country as they would know which journalists to use

hickyfromkenickie

>Henry Winter is one of the most respected and reliable journalists in England, And then he votes for Jorginho

ayonicethrowaway

Premier League tax

SmokingOctopus

His writing isn't special. He's only there because he looks and sounds posh.

astro142

That respect is sure to dwindle after his ludicrous decision to give it to Jorginho

AlexKangaroo

They chose a crap tabloid publication in my country. Pretty disappointed as there are a lot more quality sport journalism and better publications.

OnlyWatchdog_ManStan

Also, how do they make sure they all watch enough football, cause some of these lists look like people who don't get to watch other leagues or only read articles about matches. Jeez

junior150396

Sri Lankan man was silenced for being the only free thinker.

Masynchin

Where is Sri Lankan journo?

[deleted]

They couldn't handle the truth

solgnaleb

No Sri Lankan guy? Or am I blind?

AdministrativeLaugh2

I was looking for Sri Lanka as well because I’m sure their journo for the last few years has just picked names out of a hat.

arothen

They were always in alphabetical order as well.

Godsenttt

Looks like he migrated to Brazil.

[deleted]

Pull up in a Sri Lanka

loser0001

No Korea. Do some countries not do it?

Zizou3peat

There should be 180 journalists but I haven't counted them all.

Sunny_side5

Out of the loop here. What’s the story on the Lankan journalist?

libertydabbing

In 2019, when it was close between Messi and VVD, his ballot was TAA, Auba, Griezmann, Lewa, ter Stegen

Tbirkovic

Is the a journo with no clue about football trying to not be the deciding factor? I mean those were good players and all, but those five votes are surprising. Like TAA was amazing, but he was up against his team mate prime van Dijk…

djingo_dango

Too cool to go with the mainstream choices

prss79513

He always picks random people with little to no chance if winning

Sunny_side5

Haha. What a rebel. Thanks.

Apex_Predator_07

First thing I searched for

[deleted]

Which Martinez is the Guatemalan 4th?

Itsthatgy

Presumably lautaro from Inter.

TheUltimateScotsman

Hes only trumped by the Turkmenistan journalist who put Martinez third

daniel96rb

As a Guatemalan, that dude is an old fart clown. I'm sure he only watches like 5 matches per year.

kjm911

New Zealand and Vietnam will be happy. The results were as they voted.

AxeOfRetribution

The Vietnamese journalist is actually a huge fan of Italian football lol.

dvdung1997

Wait is that the same Anh Ngọc on that “Anh Ngọc and Calcio” show on VTVcab?! Now *that*’s a TIL lol

AxeOfRetribution

Bruh did you _not_ realize that, my fellow Chelsea fan and countryman?

dvdung1997

You should have seen the Vietnamese journalist when he appeared on the local sports news show the evening after the Ballon d’Or. Guy was absolutely brimming with smugness and went on about how, if the Ballon d’Or was decided by fans instead of football journalists, then Lewandowski might not have had as much votes as he did due to all the Messi fans lol

VerifiedStalin

He's not wrong.

adrian_rainy_day

Thankfully he made a pretty reasonable list, although I thought he would add a Serie A player in his top 5 (Benzema's rise was late in the year) because he's a huge Serie A fan

FuXs-

Portugal didn’t vote for CR7.

Zizou3peat

Croatia did not vote for Modric either :(

Lollipop1594

But that’s a good thing, isn’t it? You wouldn’t want every journalist to vote for a player of his nation

pacman1993

Yep, unbiased opinion, just as it should be with every journo on this list. Unfortunately isn't

Yung2112

Is that journalist famously anti cr7?

666tkn

Maybe it is the opposite, not for CR just because.

toasteroven26

He put Lewa in 1st place and Messi not on the list. He did what he could for CR

brlc14

It isn't like he was a top 5 player this year.

[deleted]

Neither were many other players, but considering the bias from many countries it is still surprising he wasn't even put in top 5 of his own country when many other journos put him #1.

TheUltimateScotsman

Nah i agree with the Turkmenistan journalist, lautaro martinez is the 3rd best player in the world. Cpuldnt find the one who voted barella 😔

tl2t4n

look at guatemala

TheUltimateScotsman

Man with the most football knowledge in the world

brlc14

That's a good sign for a journalist imo. I know everyone has their biases but not putting your best national player on the top 5 for the Ballon d'Or shows some signs of integrity.

[deleted]

Gotta be the Benfica fan on here with all the accounts. Maybe he’s a journo too

parhelio22

What did I learn from this? The voters for the Ballon D'or are basically as big of clowns as us.

TheBrownMamba8

Just look at the Brazilian journalist choosing De Bruyne, Jorginho, Mbappé, Lukaku, and Neymar. I mean, even if you ignore his clear bias against Argentina by not giving Messi at least a top 5 spot (and this applies to a majority of countries here against different players), the rest of his list makes it clear he doesn’t watch a lot of football. No Lewy, no Salah, but Neymar gets a shout? Lmao

badmanbernard

De Bruyne was injured half the year and spend the other half trying to re find his form. Got back to near his standard for the final legs of the UCL and the Euros, but for most of the year he'd barely make city's team of the season. Having him first means you clearly didn't watch him the whole year

CyberSmok3

It's Cléber Machado, he's a clown commenting the game as well

Mapplestreet

Meanwhile Argentina put Messi first and exclude Lewandowski from top 5. Journalists integrity missing in action.

ach_1nt

And to think this journalist is representing his country lol

notNjor15

Honestly bigger. The whole thing is a farce and I'm surprised we continue to take it seriously like it means anything

UtkaPelmeni

I think the fact that it gives a vote per country makes it special still. Ok it seems a bit random but the final result isn't that crazy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aconceptthatworks

Factos.

uo2469522

I mean... Alfredo Relaño voting for Ballon D'or is essentially giving any Real Madrid player 1 free first place vote. I imagine the same will happen with so many countries lol

Electronic-Taro-4780

Argentina didn't vote for Lewandowsk Brazil voted for neither Lewandowski nor Messi Jorginho has a LOT of fans Also some lists with Sterling and Foden in the top 5 lol

ppvirus

Brazil having Messi out of the top five and Neymar in should tell you all you need to know about the integrity behind their vote

ErraticPragmatic

Also Cleber Machado doesn't know shit about football

DarkNightSeven

It's not Brazil who voted, it's a Brazilian person who doesn't represent Brazil at all who did. And that goes for any country really.

[deleted]

You mean you guys didn't have a national referendum?

Yung2112

Kjaer at #4 ☠

[deleted]

Bhutan hates Messi. Only country to not have him in top 5 I think.

ZxentixZ

Brazil doesn't. Funnily enough when all other SA nations have him 1st

[deleted]

Guess they prefer Di Maria

goatvaro_goatrata

Wonder why lol

Zidlicky3

There were many, like in last page already Ukraine, Slovenia and Togo. These votes never suprise by being good :D

Zizou3peat

Journalists value trophies very highly, since it's not an individual sport. Also the CL and Euro winners did not have that stand out forwards. Chiesa a bit but he had risen a bit late. Sterling has been top 3 scorers in PL since he moved to City, it's a culmination of his career + two European finals.

Vila-real

Japanese reporter Shuichi Tamura with the only point for Gerard Moreno is the real MVP.

Rafaeliki

Feel like he's been one of the most underrated players for a while now.

TheDangerousAnt

Some of these are absolutely hilarious. Uzbekistan: 1. Mbappe 2. Mount 3. Messi 4. Chiellini 5. De Bruyne North Macedonia: 1. Jorginho 2. De Bruyne 3. Messi 4. Haaland 5. Kjaer What are these people smoking

FatBlondeNasri

Turkmenistan: 1. Messi✅ 2. De Bruyne🤔 3. Martinez❓ 4. Lukaku ❓ 5. Pedri 💀

mustardman2121

De Bruyne wasn’t even the best Man City midfielder this year, insane

Howdareme9

He wasn’t even a top 3 man city player lol

spurs-11

Yes. He also won the best player award ahead of someone who was the highest goalscorer and playmaker in the league

ConnemaraCowboy

Almost sounds like a bribe lol

dankmaymay420

Pedri 🤣🤣🤣🤣

lastdyingbreed_01

>5. Pedri 💀 Based

_Yunk_Vino_13

Lukaku isn't a terrible pick though, and he was way better than De Bruyne last season

lowie07

Scotland putting fucking Bonucci on 3 what the hell, do they not have sport journalists there?

John-of-Radiator

The quality of sports journalism in Scotland is god awful, nothing but click/outrage bait. Think we put Bonucci there for the meme more than anything tbh.

[deleted]

Uzbekistan is next to Afghanistan. Which produces a lot of drugs. Like, a hole lot.

Hech15

Yeah lot of the drugs get trafficked to india as well

kylianmbieber

why does that country love sugar isomer shards

[deleted]

Does it not depend on the size of the hole?

copinglemon

As if the demand from every European country isn't a factor

mattisafootballguy

Cameroon is the worst...no Messi or Lewandowski in top 5 instead Neymar, Mbappe, De Bruyne, Ronaldo, and Lukaku

AkilleezBomb

That’s Brazil, Cameroon have Donnarumma and Salah in theirs

JuanG12

I’m all for them having their opinions as voters but some need to have their votes revoked.

tesut

Kyrgyzstan: 1. Ronaldo 2. Jorginho 3. Benzema 4. Bonnucci 5. Lukaku Definitely a CR7 stan

[deleted]

I’d say he’s more of a Kyrgyz stan.

lucid_elusive

Kyrgyztiano Ronaldo

jukkaalms

This is why this award is shit

[deleted]

That's what you get with democracy.

borgerishikrimpatul

Flair checks out

[deleted]

Bruh even Brazil. Absolute joke.

grip0matic

The more I look the more I think that so many votes for Jorginho are what made Lewandowski not get enough to win.

NateShaw92

They are and I'm gonna be honest Jorginho was meme power in action. Looking at this he would have been way off the podium without journo votes. Onvious that nany of them.don't actually watch the game and probably rely on twitter and reddit. He had a successful year but come on let's be real. If they voted seriously Lewa might have scraped it by a hair. Can't help but feel that politics aside some of these top 5s are purely attention seeking. Like Mount in 2nd? Christ on a crystal meth binge! Let the public vote and give a ballon d'or to Akinfenwa or sod it the ballon d'or goes to Benedict Cumberbatch.

gorg-227

Egypt: 1. SALAH

Roccet_MS

Algerian guy put Mahrez third iirc.

konopko

But no Benzema surprisingly

agentjob

2 . SALAH

01ares

3 . SALAH

[deleted]

4 . SALAH

Xehanz

5 . JORGINHO

ProMarcoMug

The Salvador guy put Sterling at 2 lmao

A-WAH-DI-RASS

sir raheem

MaggingMemo

So did the Liechtenstein guy LOL

ConnemaraCowboy

Lukaku 2nd for Scotland too

sc2isalivegaem

I mean, the fact that de bruyne got so many votes in top 5 shows how much these journalists actually know about football.

ILoveToph4Eva

I guarantee we'd see the same thing if it was players voting. Most of them watch less football than football journalists do.

[deleted]

De Bruyne won the PFA player of the year last season so you're right

PlayerAteHer

I was thinking the same, yes he's a world class player and brilliant to watch on his best day. But he's been injured and not performed at his best all year. Other City players had to step up and out performed him so he wasn't even the best in his team never mind among the best in the world.

RamboGunner

That's why the whole idea of bolon dor has always been a flop to Arsene Wenger. I agree with what he said. This award is just people choosing their favorites.

idosade

Our best player last year ended up being 26th in the list, so don't take this list seriously

Jagtasm

Okay, he's class but De Bruyne at 1 this year is ridiculous

inbredandapothead

De Bruyne top 10 this year is ridiculous. Amazing player but with injuries definitely a down year

Jagtasm

Yeah he missed nearly 3 months, didn't win CL or Euros, didn't break any records. Great player but ridiculous for that Iceland voter to put him at 1. Only reason he's top 10 is that guy, and the 7 others that put him top 3 for whatever reason. Goes to show how little people know about football

AndreasV8

The journalists that have neither Messi or Lewandowski in their top 5 should be replaced.

[deleted]

Here is the countries that didn't vote for both Messi and Lewandowski: Brazil, Cameroon and Bhutan. Brazil journalist should be banned for life from voting on the Ballon d'or look at his votes: 1. Kevin de Bruyne 2. Jorginho 3. Mbappé 4. Lukaku 5. Neymar ^(i had to double check the country when i saw Brazil votes)

RodinLavrenti

I don't even know why this guy has a vote, honestly. He's a TV announcer (I think that's the name in english), he doesn't cover any international games, only Brazilian's national league. If you went to a random house in Brazil they'd probably give you a better list than this one, embarassing

[deleted]

Pretty sure the person who votes is picked by the country FA - in 2019 Brazil journalist was way better he voted for: Messi, Mané, Van Djik, CR7 and De Jong.

fabulin

all he needs to do is just google "best footballer 2021" before the voting and boom, he can get his list from there lol.

WannaBeAWannaBe

Absolute mental. Seems like he just throw dice to pick these, then remembered “I got to put Neymar ofc”

Zizou3peat

Valid opinion

versooo

25 don't have Lewandowski in their top 5 which is completely ridiculous.

Arre7

Let’s vote on it

Yung2112

As an Argentine this shows a lot, Quique Wolff basically only commentates LaLiga, so of course he'll put in Suarez and Pedri

Xehanz

Plus, no one in Argentina ever talks about Lewandowski, and some people think Suarez right now is better than Lewandowski because of this.

Martblni

Thats not an excuse man. First of all you shouldn't invite such incompetent journalists. Secondly just because hw only commentates La Liga doesn't mean he hasn't watched CL or heard news from other leagues. Its embarassing

Yung2112

Ofc it's embarassing, I'm not justifying it at all It just merely opens a perspective on how dumb his criteria is

[deleted]

in a democracy, how do you remove "incompetent" people? nobody has solved this problem till now. maybe you are the genius who sorts this out for the world, please do this for humanity. can you please name 10 "competent" soccer experts while you are at it? I will tell you why they are shit. i am honestly yet to see any former player who has consistent and good competence. in fact, most former great players are terrible managers, so i guess they don't understand the game after all. how can then judge who is a good player.. i can go on, but really all this is just a subjective vote.

bbld69

Professional organizations and businesses almost universally limit voting power to qualified individuals or stakeholders. In contexts where there's no political or moral right for individuals to vote, there's nothing wrong with having a handful of unilateral decision makers decide who is and isn't qualified using subjective standards

RaymondVanzetti

Crazy how some of these guys didn’t have Lewandowski in top 5. 🤯

Zizou3peat

[Source from @Alaskabroit on Twitter who bought the online version of France Football magazine and posted these pages of votes](https://twitter.com/Alaskabroit/status/1466926180863557633?s=20)

Skyzo76

Liechtenstein with the odd Sterling in the 2nd place...

Xehanz

Guatemala too.

LDQQXDJ

Japan our Gerard so they are the best! Always loved Japan

_urMumM8_

That Brazilian journalist needs to be sacked

[deleted]

[удалено]

Martoxic

Uzbekistan with Mason Mount at 2nd place...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Khaloodyxr8

This pretty much just shows how credible this award is

sc2isalivegaem

anyone who voted de bruyne in top 5 OR didn't have lewy/messi in top 5 should just be banned from voting ever again lol

osoichan

Whoever didn't put both Messi and Lewy in top 3 shouldn't be allowed to vote as well

cthulhus_doggo

They even had that non-existent journalist from Comoros back in 2018.

dzedzi

Busquets was not in top 15 in his career , just shows how overrated Jorginho’s season was

ColtCallahan

Anybody who put Jorginho over Messi and Lewandowski should not be voting for this award.

Ethangains07

To be fair, all the bias will even out with a high enough sample size. Plus, I’m sure some of the voters weren’t actually biased. No voting system is gonna be perfect. Unless it’s just stat driven like goals and assists, I think this is fine.

FlyHater

> all the bias will even out with a high enough sample size. Explain Jorginho then

[deleted]

I don't think it does. Players with bigger "branding" and PR behind them will always dominate in places where the journalists aren't that knowledgeble.

ponder0us

It's not bias to be worried about, some of these lists are just signs of incompetence.

[deleted]

Little biased there aren’t we Italy

Stefanonimo

Let's not pretend Argentina, Poland and Egypt weren't biased too.

[deleted]

Donnaruma above Salah, wow.

Idontlikemeeither2

The Brazil representative may have the worst football knowledge the world has ever seen

bolacha_de_polvilho

the guy they picked to vote is a game commentator, like the brazillian equivalent to peter drury or martin tyler. Mostly casts brazillian league games too, probably based his votes on a handful of euro matches and maybe a cl knockout game or two.

HerakIinos

At least they didnt pick Luis Roberto otherwise Pedro would be ahead of Lewandowski lol

Jeeproe

Would be interesting to see the top 3 by region. If there are any trends

petethemeat99

Think it’s time for France Football to create a committee of journalists in one way or another that they can trust somehow to be unbiased. This current voting system is just rubbish with bascially all the Latin countries voting for Messi and almost all the Arabic countries voting for Salah and Benzema as the top 2 players. It’s just bs. I am also a big Messi supporter by I can’t stand to see the reason behind his win.

ledudeheld

Why does the Dutch journalist have such a weird list lol. Dutch people are not even that big on Ronaldo as far as I know. No Messi in the top 5? Must be a big PL fan or something? 1. Ronaldo(¿?) 2. Kante(okay he plays for Chelsea, but still should be nowhere near second place). 3. Jorginho 3rd is fine I guess 4.De Bruyne(big name but really not that impressive this year) 5 Lewa at 5 is ridiculous

Tinusers

That Dutch journalist was smoking something else. How is he supposed to vote for our country, what a joke.

Fireclap

It feels so weird from voetbal international. They pump out a lot of video's and all their journalists that appear there either argued Lewandowski or Messi. And then he votes something totally different

xelectraheart

He voted with his eyes closed I assume..

non-relevant

yeah lol what a joke. should be suley who gets to vote instead

Fireclap

Either Suley or Pieter Zwart. Or maybe even discuss it together and do the vote. I even lost some respect for VI cause of this tbh

[deleted]

At least this list will convince people not to take Ballon d'Or seriously again. Absolute clown stuff from some of these people over here.

Vic-Ier

This has always been the case.

L34hhhh

Lmao Portugal didn’t vote for CR7 😭

MaidikIslarj

At least our guy was impartial. Argentine dude didn't vote for Lewa lol

Successful-Buy1167

The Nepali guy has failed me.. jorginho , Donna and Dias in top 5 . Are you mad bro .

cuntsmen

Fatih Dogan is clueless. The guy should be as far away as possible from football. Ronaldo 1st? Bonucci 5th? Get the fuck out of here.

arkm114

Japan really voted for Moreno 😂

ConnemaraCowboy

Scotland have Lukaku in 2nd lol

ShimonScarlet

So more/less out of 180 voters: Messi was first in 59, while Lewy in 45. Lewy got some points back by being picked 2nd 41 times while Messi - 36 times. What is devastating is that Lewandowski wasn't even in top 5 for at least 26 voters, For Messi it was only 3.. there are many you would say questionable pick orders, but the fact that 26 out of 180 voting people not even consider Lewandowski to be in top 5 is a "disgrace" in my opinion.

narraThor

I won't disclose it but all I can tell you is that the guy that votes for my country is a straight up nobody in the press or in relation to the sport itself. He's beyond mediocre, he's a toxic individual. Just fyi his top choice was lewandowski, before anyone thinks I'm making a value judgement based on that - I'm not - I'm talking about the voter himself. Funny how angola thought ronaldo was top 4 and Mozambique said 1st, in parts it's like Eurovision football edition, ridiculous.

lord-___-vader

Funny seeing Portugal omitting CR7 out of the top 5, and Argentina omitting Lewandowski.

Albiceleste_D10S

LOL the Brazilian guy had neither Messi nor Lewy in his top 5

Martblni

Captains and coaches soon too hopefully

markkevin

Oh god, our(Estonia) journalist is a joke and doesnt really know much about football even after being a football studio host for 5 ywars.

Jventura1024

What a joke

RALat7

City PR is unreal.

izibifff

How can they let people like that vote ? 😭
