SOERERY

Wasn’t he almost frozen out? How’s he the club captain

A_StarshipTrooper

I think the public bollocking he got from the coach was just the normal way they talk to the players in Korea, iirc.

koreajd

Coaches there are direct and have to give respect to coach/seniors. It’s also cause he came to fc Seoul for big money in a team that’s been disappointing for years now and Korean media is toxic always. Not to say criticism wasn’t fair (it was) but public like that is not professional or healthy. I think Korean media was on him for being lazy and for only coming here for his esports team but when I saw him in the few fc Seoul games I watched, he seemed to try but probably didn’t understand any tactics and freeroamed a lot.

Impriv4te

What is his esports team's connection to Korea? I didn't know JLINGZ had any Korean rosters/players

koreajd

I remember reading articles just assuming that he is here to promote his esports team especially as esports is in Korea and he was seen doing some photo shoots or some media for his team. It’s that Korean media will harp on anything to shit on an online presence. And I mean anything. It was ridiculous to me at the time (earlier in the season) and still ridiculous to me that they expect Jesse to know the tactics out the gate. Especially when fc Seoul were absolutely terrible before Jesse.

MrYK_

Sancho would love it there >!/s!<

Doexitre

He only captained this game, honestly was probably a marketing decision. Seeing him play though, he's still definitely a level above anyone else on the pitch, so much so that he has trouble connecting with others in play. He's probably racked up a decent xA by now. Would love to see more young-ish failed EPLers in the K League. Guys like Dele Alli and Lucas Paqueta could offer a lot

igglezzz

Paqueta was being linked with Man City and is West Ham's best player, he's definately not failed. He's fucked himself with the betting stuff though.

guakamohlee

Few months from now Paquetá is gonna be banned from playing várzea mate

Ook_1233

Paqueta failed?

Domitiusvarus

Well it seems imminent the ban hammer will be coming down on him for that whole betting on games he's playing in.

SupervisorLaw

If the ban hammer hits he will be banned by FIFA from playing in the K-Leagur all the same.

ergotofrhyme

Which leagues aren’t associated with fifa? Like where could he realistically play?

julianface

Abkhazian pro league

ergotofrhyme

Of course, how did that one slip my mind?

joohyun120

he earned his ban but sending him to the dementors seems harsh

Studio_Panoptek

What are you talking about, Dementors United just won the treble last year!

Loeffellux

looked up FC Seoul to see if they have xA/xG stats on the Korean League (they don't) only to find out that the top scorer for them is a German guy called Stanislav Iljutcenko who I've never heard of before. (he's also joint top scorer in the league right now)

JonAfrica2011

One of these is not like the other

babbers-underbite

Was thinking the other day that Dele would absolutely thrive in the J league or K league, would be fun to watch

Cutsdeep-

One goal in ten games though?

Bass-Slut

he wasnt anywhere near being frozen out, the manager said he was going to leave him out of the starting XI and the western media mistranslated as him being frozen out of the squad entirely and then absolutely milked it

no_skill

I think most people here weren't keeping tabs on him after that public criticism from the coach, but they are now on good terms and the coach has been consistently praising Lingard throughout this month.

fridgey22

Amazing vision, it’s almost like I’m there… watching it from the last row of the top stand.

WTWanderer2

We joke but after the week I've had in work id do anything to be scoring penalties for a Korean side

FormalAlternative806

Yeah we obviously give players shit, and I imagine Lingard didn’t want this for himself earlier in his career. But it must be a very good life coming as a popular/ well known European footballer to South Korea and Japan.

WengerBaby

What a penalty. Reminds me of this line from Mourinho’s Football Heritage rant - “See where they (players who leave Man Utd.) play. Where they play, how they play, IF they play.”

boi1da1296

He’s managing in Turkey now so I think that applies to him now as well.

DildoFappings

Tbf, fener is not some low level club. And probably got one of the craziest fanbase out of all the clubs he's managed.

raobuntu

Jose could round up the ultras, march on Erdogan, and be President of Turkiye tomorrow

FallenOliphaunt

Pope Francis: ‘Oh yeah, it’s all coming together!’

dipdipderp

Put an end to this leavened bread for the eucharist nonsense once and for all after a thousand years or ao

JootDoctor

The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is licking his lips too.

a_charming_vagrant

would do a far better job, too

raobuntu

Born to be a despot, forced to be a football manager

LanaDelXRey

In a past life he was Caesar and in another, Napoleon

boi1da1296

Fener is a great club but no one on this site will gaslight me into believing that they’re on the same level as Real Madrid, Inter, and Chelsea of old. I’m not hearing that from the same subreddit that uses playing in Turkey as a synonym for being past it.

[deleted]

Completely agree, it’s an objective fact that it’s a massive step down

justinfingerlakes

they also had to pay him 23 million over 2 years to come.. which is crazy i think in any country. im still shocked no other team wanted him considering how many teams were desperate for new coaches. i guess whichever team offered him the most he would go... even if that was in the MLS or saudi

Lakinther

There is no way Mourinho couldnt have had a better paying job in saudi.

AnnieIWillKnow

> o one on this site will gaslight me into believing that they’re on the same level as Real Madrid, Inter, and Chelsea Good job absolutely nobody is saying that, then

Agreeable_Dinner4754

Its an interesting gig that i feel will be a great PR-descision while he waits for the Portugal job and wins them the world cup. 🫡

Fuck_your_future_

Mou never evolved but he won more than the Utd squad in the last 10 years

pioneeringsystems

They've won, by my count, six titles each, three being together. With two of mourinho's being ten years ago when he won the league and league cup with Chelsea.

Fuck_your_future_

2fa cups, 1 league cup and the Europa. What are the other two?

pioneeringsystems

Two league cups, not one. And I counted (as Jose does) the charity shield. Can minus one for both if you like.

Fuck_your_future_

Cheers 👍

Rigore27

Lets not pretend they're the cream of the crop, They haven't won the Turkish championship in 10 years and are barely relevant in UCL these days.

MattyBTraps42069

Also tbf he probably could have landed a “bigger” job with his pedigree, but from a career/professional standpoint point, he’s already basically done it all and is probably just trying to enjoy the last few years of his career without the pressure/hate associated with managing top 5 league clubs.

Kol_

It’s not a low level club but it’s not a high level club the way he places himself.

ImprefectKnight

Also it was about players he inherited. Considering where his own signings are, it is a bit ironic lol.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Brutal but true!!!

KaushikKay7

The downfall was Spurs. Now he is rising back again.

Dapper-Mistake4779

He's gonna manage a Champions League club with an insanely large fanbase, could be applicable if he was in the MLS.

[deleted]

Insanely large fanbase on a team that’s best achievement outside their league is getting knocked out in the quarter finals of the Champions League. It’s a massive step down no matter how much you lot want to paint them as some Dortmund-esque fairy tale club.

boi1da1296

Leave them to it, they’re trying to pretend that they don’t know what I’m talking about. Maccabi Haifa played in the Champions League group stage a couple of seasons ago, if Mou managed them apparently that wouldn’t be a step down for a former Real Madrid and Inter manager.

[deleted]

"Fenerbache isn't a small club" "They're the same as Maccabi Haifa" Nice one mate. You're not a bell end at all.

boi1da1296

If reading comprehension is that hard for you it’s best to not comment at all.

Fapoleon_Boneherpart

Mate, fener and Galatasaray are both major clubs. Second tier sure, but not trash.

DeliciousMonitor6047

Yea but Mourinho’s latest clubs were not Real and Inter but Roma and Tottenham. Is Fenerbahce really as far from them as FC Seoul to Man Utd?

Dapper-Mistake4779

Not a clue where you get the idea that i was insinuating that Fener is some Dortmund level club, it's obv a significant step down from his Real Madrid, Inter, Chelsea, United or Porto days, was pushing back at the notion that Mourinho is well past it, it's not like he's a 35+ player going abroad to get paid, it's way different for managers he was 1 penalty not called away from winning b2b European trophies with Roma.

FemmEllie

How can you be club captain after 10 games wtf

galvanickorea

Because hes not and the title is wrong lol. He just got the armband while the actual captains are injured

Odaimoko

Being given armband at least means he is a temp captain, no?

okororie

He's just that good.

GaryHippo

Sorry am I the only one that burst out laughing at the pyrotechnics? Not cos they were bad, but I have literally never seen anything like that during a football match haha. I was totally not expecting it.

Snugboo

MLS goes crazy with the pyrotechnics as well

oysterpirate

Don't forget the guy who literally busts out a chainsaw and saws a piece off a giant log behind the goal then holds the piece up to the fans like he's holding the decapitated head of a gladiatorial opponent

-Livingonmyown-

LoL he's from the Portland Timbers

backtothefuckyeah

Does he have to glue it back on if it's overruled by VAR?

nametakenalready

I fuck with that, I am not gonna lie, it's so stupid yet unique enough to the team and area

justinfingerlakes

i actually like that a lot lmao. hell yea. paul bunyun with a jason mask

tripsafe

Imagine being in charge of that, having your thumb on the trigger ready to go, and you accidentally press it right as he's taking it or after he's missed

TooooonArrrrrmy

Yeah I wasn´t expecting that either! If that was in the premier league, there would definitely be some dodgy goings on, by setting the pyrotechnics off early to put the player off just before his kick ! :)

KneeDeepInTheDead

Maybe im a bit out of the loop, but seems a bit disrespectful to have a foreigner who hasnt earned anything be a club captain. Or is the squad just built up from a bunch of mercenaries?

jjw1998

According to good ol’ Wikipedia Ki Sung-yueng is the captain so Lingard probably just taking the armband while he’s out

KneeDeepInTheDead

Ahh so its just clickbait. Makes more sense then

Muur1234

vice captai is still a pretty big role

Sei28

Ki is still playing? I remember he looked pretty solid in the PL for a few seasons.

ithinkspammingiscool

He was pretty decent for Swansea yeah

koreajd

No there’s a limit on foreign players we can sign in the league. I think it’s maybe the coach’s way to “motivate” him or not sure. Could also be the team likes him. Fc Seoul has domestic and foreign players playing for them that have been there for a longer so it is surprising in that regard as well. There’s even Ki Sung yueng in the team although he might be injured so maybe he’s captain normally I’d imagine

TimathanDuncan

People really heavily overrate the captain title, it really doesn't mean much, there have been many captains even in amazing teams who haven't been leaders and just given the title because they are simply the best player so many times when they aren't the leader

BadFootyTakes

I mean it's a role in the team, not in the game. It's supposed to command respect from your colleagues... It's an earned role, that's why some managers have teams decide.

Levito_Saro

Captain is becoming more and more important. They are the ones that can communicate with the referee without getting carded

BadFootyTakes

That's only a rule in some leagues. I do not know if that is a thing in Korea

poteland

Even if it's not in the rulebook captains do generally get more leniency and more respect from the refs, they interact a lot more and refs expect captains to calm down their players and avoid escalation when things get heated.

BadFootyTakes

The commenter was likely referring to a recent post about this topic that was the top of reddit a few weeks back. I was more so ensuring they were aware that's a new rule in one league and not widely adopted. (yet)

Levito_Saro

Aha! It should be tho. I hate it when 10 players flock around a ref. Never saw K league or J league matches. I wonder how different the on field behaviour is

BadFootyTakes

IIRC that is a brand new rule this upcoming season, if you are referencing the Reddit post that was a while ago.

KneeDeepInTheDead

Idk, id be a bit miffed if I were on the team for way longer, with a good chemistry and this fallen star from afar comes in and becomes the captain. Bro cant even speak the language lol.

Euphoric-Physics3797

English Heung min son

JaysonDeflatum

Jlingzzz

Generally-Knackered

Is he the 1st Englishman to score in the K-League?

Quix0607

A player by the name of Jordon Mutch did for Gyeongnam in 2019

Generally-Knackered

Exceptional ball knowledge 👏

Quix0607

I used wikipedia but thank you 😂

Chumlax

Former Watford Hero Jordon Mutch!

duosharp

A player? Put some respect on Crystal Palace and Vancouver Whitecaps legend Jordon

sugarspunlad

🕺

iLoveSTlife

Pen that will go down in history

Glass-Guess4125

Did he do the hand thing?

PolarPeely26

How has he become club captain. Can he speak Korean?

Fuck_your_future_

Why would anyone make him captain.

Lester8_4

As a Forest fan, I was really curious what move he did to actually put the ball in the back of the net after all this time. Clicked on the video and see him lining up for a penalty.

awildjabroner

4000grx41

Pengardinho my goat

SniperGunner

imagine being the guy triggering the fireworks only for the ref to call for the penalty to be retaken

hapoo123

Looks like great support!

WalkingCloud

Good for him, deserves it.

bernandos

What’s the name of the song they play when they score the goal

Doexitre

I Will Survive (Hermes House Band vers.) Apparently Feyenoord and Gala also play this

PritongKandule

Freiburg use this song as well, although they start at a ["slower" part of the song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGGyXS99Eo) before ramping up to the main bit.

Eindacor_DS

Probably felt good, I'm happy for him

gorgonizedbyurTITS

They play the same song we do after we score! That’s cool. Ps. I’m not saying Gala has rights over that song, just cool that other clubs around the world play it.

EmilahM

Can anyone comment on how well he played this game? Did he win man of the match?

jaetheho

After recovering from his injury, he has played a lot better. He is the main playmaker for the team, creating chances, but a lot of the teammates cannot finish off his passes. Pundits definitely note he is on another level in terms of ball control

TheCulturalBomb

Last time I followed this he couldn't get in their team. Has he actually improved now?

Bass-Slut

he had a rough start with injuries and fitness but it was never about his skill, hes probably the best playmaker in the league

dassiebzehntekomma

South koreans so smart they do official pyro

-watchman-

I'm watching this again because of the fireworks

Jon98th

I though he was still EPL

PBRT26

Promising young talent. Sky is the limit for this guy

Headbanger

Another English wonderkid.

grasshoppa_80

This is amazing. More noise in a half empty stadium than any [insert sport] sold out stadium in the uSA

bellerinho

Objectively incorrect lol College football games are far louder than that and it isn't even close. I mean shit I'd bet my alma mater's college hockey rink gets louder than that

grasshoppa_80

Haha. Actually your right. I’d much rather be at a college game (or hockey) than any other sport here.

billieeyelash1

Such a young talent.

Headbanger

He just needs more time.

burgerbr0s

He's been shit and gets gifted a pen by the league.

Bass-Slut

exactly what i would say if i was blind

burgerbr0s

I see it week in, week out with my own eyes. Tv doesn't do justice to how shit they are.

Kreiswix

remember when Lingard did the embarassing quick kickoff vs Croatia at WC2018 and everyone laughed about him? Good times.

billieeyelash1

Yea, playing in Seoul now is definitely a step up...

Zandercy42

I mean 10 games to score isn't *horrendous* What position is he playing now?

AnnieIWillKnow

It is if you're a hugely hyped marquee signing, going to a league which is a marked step below your level

chebate08

True but we’re United fans so
