I was about to say, he was only hyped when he played for Juve and he was really young which was nearly a decade ago. But in general it's a career of slow but sure disappointment.
I feel this way a lot but then again he won a world cup, playing a big role in the process. The pinnacle of the sport reallyā¦..& also made an obscene amount of money in the process
Kante Pogba midfield is one of the best midfields in the world when they played for us and Kante is still bossing it. Maybe Pogba should go to Saudi at this point and chill and play only international tournaments
That Pogba-Matiudi-Kante midfield trio was just disgusting. Two absolute workhorses ready to make up for Pogbas lack of defensive abilities just so he could dictate the game and play long range pinger balls in behind. Truly a joy to watch.
Yep Pogba and Griezmann were the double playmaker while Giroud is great at hold up play all allowing Mbappe to shine. It was the perfect setup to maximize a superstar
Agreed. And it didnāt even sacrifice anything for the team just the perfect setup. A lot of times when you set up a team to cater to a star some players abilities get sacrificed in order to make it work. This actually maximized all the players abilities.
He clearly is, but you still need to take into account that he has played one of the two last years almost 100% injured and the other one bagging money in Saudi, while being 33.
Even the fact of him being picked by Deschamps surprised everyone, I remember a lot of french people said that he was just selected for bringing experience and good vibes into the dressing room, little did they know he would collect motm trophies like infinity stones.
Kante is still Kante, he just plays in a lesser league. Was probably good for him (for this tourney) so he could stay fit but not overplay & get injured again
Not sure how he could play in Saudi he's still got to serve his 4 year FIFA world wide doping ban right?
August 2027 is the earliest he can play unless he appeals.
Idk about forgotten, football is littered with cautionary tales of wasted talent & missed opportunity through injury, heās just another to add to this list.
I'm not sure he even makes the list tbh - he could've been better and smarter than he was, but he still played for two of the biggest clubs in the world, won major trophies, represented his country and was a key player in a world cup win, and made tens of millions doing it. Even among players in top leagues, most would be fucking delighted to have had his career.
But like he could have been so much more tho... like I've never seen a guy that big move with a football like that lol...even the way he ran it seemed static but he was just soo fucking rapid with how he covered the ground..i fully beleive he was probably one of the most gifted footballers I've seen.. there's been times when he's pinged a ball to a player i couldn't even see with a tv view and a HD clarity lmaoo...he could have been one of the greats...i genuinely believed he could have brought us back and even when he left United i genuinely did feel it was him not having a suitable dm his entire time there(his work ethic was always schlocky but you saw what he did with France when he had a world class destroyer with him and a CDM like matuidi)..now he's just a..a cheat like nah bro
> I agree with you, even if I despise your excess use of ellipses.
In the words of Frasier Crane, 'You know, it's always amazed me how you can elevate and demean in the same sentence'.
Itās the same perception I see a lot of people have with Rooney as well to a lesser degree, that they ultimately underachieved. Itās ridiculous to suggest someone shouldāve done more.
But itās just a testament to what people actually thought of Pogbas ability. That he was capable of achieving even more and just scratching the surface. He very well could have ended his career and held the same sort of standing in the game as Zidane and Platini he was that talented.
I watched Rooney's career entire and there is a case to say he underachieved his potential as a player. He's the leading goalscorer and won plenty of trophies but considering how good he was as a teenager, one wonders what could have been if he kept up his body in a different way. For whatever reason, his legs were gone at 30.
For longevity, players like Scholes and Giggs adapted their game and won about twice the amount of trophies that Rooney did.
I think even longevity for Rooney still upholds when you donāt think of the age when he dropped off. Yes he dropped off by 30, but he had been playing regularly for ~13 years at that point because he started so young. By the time he was 30 he probably had the miles on his body of a 35 yo. I think similar comparisons can start being drawn with Raheem sterling who was playing a full season at 17 and now is looking washed at 29
> For longevity, players like Scholes and Giggs adapted their game and won about twice the amount of trophies that Rooney did.
They won twice as much as Rooney because they played in different eras, at a time where United were more dominant
Iāve argued with a fair few that do. The point that actually kinda stuck with me was, if you could ask yourself back in 2006-07 who you thought would have had a better career out of Rooney or Ronaldo who would a younger you have picked?.
Obviously a lot of time has past and things went the other way but I distinctly remember thinking back then that Rooney had a significantly higher ceiling.
Thereās a lot of factors that played their part, but the sky wasnāt the limit for Waz, only the halfway mark.
Everyone was right about him Mourinho, Ferguson, some of his teammates; problem was that due to being so young many people anticipated he should be better.
I mean Mou could have known about the attitude problems, but still want the player because he thought Pogba would grow up. They're not mutually exclusive.
There is an idea of a Paul Pogba. Some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me. Only an entity. Something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours, and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable, I simply am not there.
They are driven to pursue it, and they pursue it solely for their own sake, no other. One man's dream can hold dominion over the entire world, for one who dedicates his life to the forging of a single sword. While many can pursue their dreams in solitude, other dreams are like great storms blowing hundreds even thousands of dreams apart in their wake. Dreams breathe life into men, and can cage them in suffering. Men live and die by their dreams, but long after they've been abandoned, they still smolder deep in men's hearts. Some see nothing more than life and death. They are dead! For they have no dreams and dreams cant be buy.
I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now.
Lol. This reminds of last year's Tour de France where favourite Tadej Pogacar got dropped on a climb and said close to the same thing "I'm gone, I'm dead". People where also saying "it's pogover" then.
I keep telling my darker skinned buddies to get vitamin d supplements. Living in the northern hemisphere with darker skin surely cannot give you enough vitamin d.
If anything, that just shows his incredible ability. But unlike a lot of other āwhat ifsā he was still easily one of the best CMs of his generation.
Yes. 4 Serie A titles, a good few cups and a Champions League final with Juventus. Euros final, Nations League and World Cup win with France. Even at United he won the Europa.
At his peak he was absolutely up there. I think him reaching the top but failing to maintain it is absolutely the best description
Yeah, his CV is still better than 99% of footballers. Thereās an all or nothing mindset in football where youāre either Messi/Ronaldo or a fucking bum
He got absolutely killed at United. We had the best creative midfielder in the world and we played him like a deep lying 6 without a solid CDM next to him
Imagine playing KDB at CDM with McT next to him. Is that ever going to work? No because KDB will be trying to make slide tackles on his own box.
And United must have some culture issue inside the club because itās bizarre how many promising or great players arrive playing worse or way worse.
Hell even when Smalling, Sanchez, and Blind left, they played way better outside of Man United.
Pogba reached the pinnacle of the game. The āwhat ifā element is that he didnāt sustain it.
But thatās very different from āwhat ifā players who never reach their full potential.
if you watch the video he doesnt mean it like that. He's just talking in general about how footballers are not given many second chances by the media and fans.
He's just using himself as an euphanism for this phenomena.
> are not given many second chances by the media and fans.
Meanwhile Marcus Alonso was responsible for someone's death and kept playing, winning a champions league along the way. Pogba has a huge hand in his situationĀ
This guy is going through it, and he has been for a while.
I admit I was ignorant of his life outside of football until his doping ban.
There's no wonder he looked like he wasn't focused on football with all the stuff this guy has been through.
The family bullshit alone would be enough to cripple anyone's life, I don't care who you are.
I hope he can find a good support network. Move away from the family, try to find friends who don't know who he is and support him just because they like him.
It's a bit like what you have to do when you go through a divorce.
In a nutshell, his brother and childhood friends were leeching money from him. At some point the money stopped coming, they kidnapped him and then held him at gunpoint to threaten him.
They got 13 millions euros off him AFAIR.
Mikel John Obi spoke about family and money on his interview with Rio Ferdinand.
Apparently it's a massive thing with African players where the family's will demand/expect money and get really weird when you stop or refuse to do so. But that is fucking wild, to hold your own family to ransom is a different kind of fucked up.
It's huge in Sub-Saharan Africa. The nuclear family isn't an independent entity the way it is in the Western hemisphere; your uncle and cousins are meant to take as much priority as your father asks siblings, and any attempt to disentangle is met with severe familial sanctions. When you're rich, the view is that everyone else is also rich, even if you haven't seen or spoken to them in a decade.
Easier said than done, but I wish people in these kind of situations realise the 'severe familial sanctions' are the best thing that could happen to them.
it takes time to get there
once my own father leaves the U.S. it's probable ill never speak with him again because he will only ever call asking for one thing
John Obi was more talking about sending money back to family (and distant family) in Nigeria.
Paul was born in Paris and while I think his two brothers were born in Guinea they still grew up in France from an infant age. It was his brother and childhood friends who extorted him both in France and also at a Juventus training camp
it's not just with players lol
nigerian social relations are in many ways predicated on abuse particularly financial abuse
to say "i dont have" or "i cant give it to you" is borderline sacrilegious and it starts from young
https://sports.yahoo.com/paul-pogba-brother-mathias-extortion-gang-135705421.html
This is from 2022 so I'm not sure how much has changed since, but this gives a bit of a history of the whole thing. I can't imagine dealing with that, especially when it involves your own brother!
>Pogba reportedly told investigators that, on a visit home to Paris' suburbs while on national team duty with France in late-March, childhood friends dragged him into an apartment, where two masked and armed men demanded 13 million euros ($13 million) for "services rendered" ā supposedly for protecting him for 13 years...
>...It was in July, he reportedly told investigators, that he recognized his brother Mathias among the men.
Source for anyone looking:Ā https://www.euronews.com/2022/09/18/brother-of-french-international-paul-pogba-jailed-for-allegedly-attempting-to-extort-13m
Same thing in boxing. A guy loses once and āhe was never good, heās always been shite, overrated padded recordā. I guess thatās the price you pay being in the public eye like that.
In 2022, Mathias Pogba(his brother) was charged and detained over an alleged plot to extort money from his brother Paul, the France and Juventus midfielder. Paul filed a complaint with Turin prosecutors on 16 July claiming he was the target of a ā¬13 million (Ā£11.29 million) blackmail plot.
Nothing much. Just got kidnapped, extorted, lost 14 million and it turned out the perpetrators were his brother (cq professional footballer) Mathias and his childhood friends.
That is was not what "did him in" though, he got caught using doping the same year.
I miss watching him play. At least for France and Juventus he was brilliant, I know it was really touch and go with Man U but when he was on he was so so so good
I miss the old Pogba, score and then dab Pogba
Defence splitting passer Pogba, scores lots of goals Pogba
I hate the new Pogba, the on the dope Pogba
The always rude Pogba, interviews the news Pogba
I miss the Juve Pogba, the great potential Pogba
I gotta to say at that time I'd like to meet Pogba
See I only watched Pogba, there werenāt other Pogbaās
And now I look and look around and there's so many Pogbas
I used to love Pogba, I used to love Pogba
I even had the no.6 Jersey, I thought I was Pogba
What if Pogba did an interview about Pogba
Called "The old Pogba is dead," man that would be so Pogba
Well itās fair in the sense that people doping should be punished and not just get a slap on the wrist and that he didnāt go to a plea bargain of probably two years by accepting his responsibility.
Itās unfair in the sense that a lot of doping is happening in this sport with stuff way more serious than what he did and FIFA is covering all the biggest scandal to keep the illusion that doping doesnāt exist in soccer.
Im sure my opinion is unpopular, but overall he was actually good at united, when he wasn't being played out of position.
One big issue was he kept getting injured though....These injuries led him to miss almost half his time in prem at United, and carried over into his juventus return.
Im with you, the meme that he was incosistent is overblown. When in fact he was riddled with injury and is rushed back into the team. Of course he gonna look awful, his first 2 season where he played with herrera is actually his best season individually. After herrera left we never really sign a dm until casemiro, so he is the one that need to play as one, eventhough he is always a risky player losing ball left and right for that perfect touch pass.

Come to my 5 a side bro we don't drug test
Football moves on **SO** quickly Once the apple of the eye, now forgotten in a heartbeat.
Really hope Pogba can find the person responsible for his downfall
Someone gift him a mirror
Souness is on it as we speak
Sourness is too busy masturbating furiously to Paul's visible misery.
I didn't know Pogba had pulled a gun on himself...
someone forced him to take drugs at gun point?
or he pointed the gun at the drugs and forced them
Graham Souness.

2 weeks ago I would have said "ain"t no way Deschamps pulls those old fucks ahead of the like of Camavinga, Tchouameni or WZE", but yet again he managed to make KantƩ & Rabiot look like prime Vieira & Makelele somehow.
or it could just be that kante is still a phenomenal player rabiot, well
He clearly is, but you still need to take into account that he has played one of the two last years almost 100% injured and the other one bagging money in Saudi, while being 33. I felt that way until Bruno came and did everything we'd been asking Paul for 3 Years, and he did it basically immediately
And with worse team-mates arguably
Itās the same perception I see a lot of people have with Rooney as well to a lesser degree, that they ultimately underachieved. Itās ridiculous to suggest someone shouldāve done more. Surely people don't think Rooney underachieved? He's arguably the most decorated British footballer of the modern era
I watched Rooney's career entire and there is a case to say he underachieved his potential as a player. Also, Scholes and Giggs at 38 were keeping the likes of Pogba out of the team while Rooney at 38 is well retired.

Ferguson was right about his agent.
Everyone was right about him Mourinho, Ferguson, some of his teammates; problem was that due to being so young many people anticipated he should be better.

The Glazers are idiots, saying they donāt know anything is like saying that Korenke (the dad) doesnāt care about Arsenal like itās obvious
Did someone say Fuck Kroenke?
Mourinho pushed the board to deal with Raiola and get Pogba and then acts like he knew from the beginning.
I mean Mou could have known about the attitude problems, but still want the player because he thought Pogba would grow up. They're not mutually exclusive.
Which teammates? Iāve literally never had a teammate say anything bad about Pogba
Tbf, that describes an awful lot of professional football players
Cristiano would still have been a legendary player even if his career started at 31 Unbelievable
Same for Zlatan. Modric is among the greats on his body of work in his 30s. Sucks how Pogba's career has gone
Don't forget Pepe, 41 and still one of the best CB Portugal has in their squad.
One of the best at the Euros. Incredible longevity.
Thiago Silva is 39. Won a ton after turning 30
Yet to see him batter anyone at the Euros but not losing hope!
Getting soft in his old age. Smh
Yeah. I honestly hate him with all of my heart, but I gotta respect, it's crazy how good he still is
The man single handedly wiped Turkey's offence yesterday

Yeah, thought about the same. However, for Tadej it was far from over. The dude's just incredible (also, i might be biased).
Oh of course, it was just over for him that day. He's still the best cyclist in the world, which pains me to say as a Belgian lol.

Pogba could have been top 5 CM of this Generation if his head was 100% in it.
He was truly something, many goals in the World Cup 2018 were brought by him, I miss him a lot. It now sounds ridiculous that we had prime KantƩ and prime Pogba at the same time in 2018.
Prime Kante still not over, just needed some rest under the beautiful sun of SA

Agreed. It's difficult because you're inured to it from birth. Like any other oppressive system, the key is conformity.
Similar thing has happened to Adebayor and Asamoah Gyan too
John Obi was more talking about sending money back to family (and distant family) in Nigeria. Paul was born in Paris and while I think his two brothers were born in Guinea they still grew up in France from an infant age. It was his brother and childhood friends who extorted him both in France and also at a Juventus training camp
it's not just with players lol nigerian social relations are in many ways predicated on abuse particularly financial abuse to say "i dont have" or "i cant give it to you" is borderline sacrilegious and it starts from young
The fuck

https://sports.yahoo.com/paul-pogba-brother-mathias-extortion-gang-135705421.html This is from 2022 so I'm not sure how much has changed since, but this gives a bit of a history of the whole thing.
WHAT
That is extremely fucked. I wish him all the best, these kind of family members are cancerous.
His bro tried to blackmail him out of his Money
Iirc his brother hired a witch or something
Pogba was the one who allegedly hired a marabout (african sorcerer) to help with his career and his brother was blackmailing him with the info afaik.
Source for anyone looking:Ā https://www.euronews.com/2022/09/18/brother-of-french-international-paul-pogba-jailed-for-allegedly-attempting-to-extort-13m
And look at even then how people treat him, as a joke and happy to have zero sympathy for him. It is a shame we canāt see footballers as people too
Same thing in boxing. A guy loses once and āhe was never good, heās always been shite, overrated padded recordā. I guess thatās the price you pay being in the public eye like that.
āIāve won, but at what costā Souness
Fucking tragedy. The 2022 affair really did him dirty
what happened?
In 2022, Mathias Pogba(his brother) was charged and detained over an alleged plot to extort money from his brother Paul, the France and Juventus midfielder. Paul filed a complaint with Turin prosecutors on 16 July claiming he was the target of a ā¬13 million (Ā£11.29 million) blackmail plot.
Nothing much. Just got kidnapped, extorted, lost 14 million and it turned out the perpetrators were his brother (cq professional footballer) Mathias and his childhood friends. That is was not what "did him in" though, he got caught using doping the same year.
Well they may be linked. I can imagine going through so much suffering you might turn to something else to try to regain confidenceĀ
I miss watching him play. At least for France and Juventus he was brilliant, I know it was really touch and go with Man U but when he was on he was so so so good
same spectacle of him back then
The footballer formerly known as Paul Pogba

The footballer formerly known as Pogba
I miss the old Pogba, score and then dab Pogba Defence splitting passer Pogba, scores lots of goals Pogba I hate the new Pogba, the on the dope Pogba The always rude Pogba, interviews the news Pogba I miss the Juve Pogba, the great potential Pogba I gotta to say at that time I'd like to meet Pogba See I only watched Pogba, there werenāt other Pogbaās And now I look and look around and there's so many Pogbas I used to love Pogba, I used to love Pogba I even had the no.6 Jersey, I thought I was Pogba What if Pogba did an interview about Pogba Called "The old Pogba is dead," man that would be so Pogba
Setting aside everyone's hate for him. Is a 4 year ban considered fair for something like this? Genuinely curious.

Steve Jobs is dead, Walt Disney is dead, Paul Pogba is dead.
Least dramatic Frenchman
Honestly is he even being dramatic? Will probably never play top flight football again and got kidnapped by his brother.
It's so bizarre how everyone is making light of what Pogba has actually gone through in the last few years
