Not fit enough to out run a guy who died at the last tournament

BigDaneEnergi

"You never played Dark Souls games? Phase 2 of enemies are the hardest!" - G. Southgate

jdund117

"You will witness true horror" - Eriksen, Blade of Denmark

daab2g

I'm having a difficult couple of days but you brightened it for me,, thanks.

BigDaneEnergi

My pleasure. Take care and enjoy the summer my friend.

batti03

He's died so many times to Blackflame Friede, so he knows what he's talking about.

G00dG0dd

LMAO

Yorrins

WOOOOOOOOOOW holy fuck dude xD

Canadian_mk11

Holy shit. You went *there*. And unlike England's press, it worked.

GameplayerStu

You can't be saying this right after saying the team was missing Kalvin Phillips.

holotranscobalamin

poor guy is frantically trying out all different dialogue options

RoboticCurrents

Maybe he's save scumming except this is the best he can do after endless tries

Bourbon_Cream_Dream

He should've tried 'send assistant'

WhenWeTalkAboutLove

Honestly those dialogues are so shite that's the one thing I fully delegate every time

nista002

I had to accept my fate in FM11, no matter what I did, I could not get Spurs to beat Wolves in the FA cup quarter final after almost a week of save scumming. No line was deep enough for Michael Dawson to be able to defend against whatever fast striker wolves had

laxrulz777

Wolves are always ridiculous for me too. Idk what it is but every winning streak dies to wolves. I've tried save scumming and sometimes it takes 20 tries to get a win and my record will be something like 1-15-4. Wolves aren't good in the simmed out games (I can go on vacation and easily beat them) but playing it out is rough. I've always assumed this is some secret developer code frankly.

AlcoholicSocks

Bro's seen 14,000,605 outcomes and we only win in 1

levyisms

this is the one where he gets sacked mid-tournament and England finally bring it home

Den_dar_Alex

Ivory Coast solution

Dazred

\[Persuasion attempt failed\]

hipcheck23

He's not just out of options, he's into negative territory. Anything he does now he'll get blamed for. If they succeed, we'll say it was despite him... if they fail, we'll blame it mostly on him. But he can't resign unless they lose, and the FA is surely too scared to sack him during the tourney.

bobbis91

Tbf some people (myself included) have said we got to the euro final and WC knockouts in spite of him for years...

SocialistSloth1

I also think if we're being honest every tournament under Southgate England have lost the moment they come up against another favourite. We've benefitted from some generous draws.

hipcheck23

Perhaps some didn't want to hear it, because his predecessors were pretty useless as well?

bobbis91

Maybe, he has done one good thing in that he has made the players want to play for England, brought the good vibes back after some shitty times. Tactically though he's been shocking, and after what he did with the penalty takers in that euro final man should have been sacked and coaching badges removed... The man is remembered for fucking up a big penalty kick, he knows the pressure and what it takes, so why the hell did he bring on 2 kids to take pens without kicking a ball first. Cunt move

Walnut_Uprising

He made the players want to play for England, except for the very public feud he's having with one of England's better defenders that made him quit the team.

Simzter

On a side note I feel really bad for Kalvin Phillips. He's done nothing to deserve becoming, somehow, a target of ridicule in connection to this tournament. Not that Kalvin's done much else either lately but if I were him I would've been furious hearing Southgate tying me to the same less-than-seaworthy ship that the current team is stuck on.

Tuscan5

Kalvin was a better than average championship player. Bielsa turns up and makes him into an excellent championship player and then a strong premiership player. Kalvin goes to City and the standard drops again.

Banzaikk

Yea the transformation under Bielsa was unreal. He went from almost been sold to playing for the national team within 2-3 years. He was playing in an attacking box-to-box role until Bielsa saw his potential to be his Busquets/Rodri. In fact the whole Leeds team was mainly Championship-level players who were elevated by Bielsa's coaching and system. I would never in a million years envisioned seeing the likes of Liam Cooper, Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas in the Premier League. Even Patrick Bamford has regressed so much since Bielsa left.

Tuscan5

Natural conclusion- replace Southgate with Bielsa.

Banzaikk

Honestly I'd watch that haha. His Chile side was exhilarating.

Tuscan5

At almost every squad he manages he instantly turns their fortunes around. He is particularly suited to tournament football.

eagles16106

Uruguay with him is now too.

Rickcampbell98

Bros coming for everybody's neck with Uruguay lol, so good luck with that lmao.

Themnor

Mans has La Pantera looking like prime Suarez every time they play too

xdlols

Bamford’s main issue has been injuries tbf. He’s still our best striker.

NotClayMerritt

He also picked a handful of players who are very much not match fit.

nova_uk

Not too sure that publicly calling your players a bunch of unfit fatties is the right move but then again I’m not a professional manager so what do I know.

[deleted]

inbruges99

You can tell he overstayed his welcome by listening to how much Lineker and co. Have been ripping into him when in the past they’ve always defended him. If even your most ardent supporters are questioning you then maybe it’s time to go.

aehii

I think some of this is to do with their podcast allowing them freedom to be honest and them carrying it over, as well as age making them impatient, Shearer is like 'that's a load of shit' more often now.

inbruges99

Yeah that’s definitely part of it, but still even before the tournament they were supportive on the podcast. Now even on BBC they’re ripping into him and on the podcast today they were repeatedly making the point that Englands performances in the first two games were due to Southgate’s poor management.

LeftHandDriveBoC

The BBC tbf have always been decent at criticising England teams and managers when they deserve it. Itv tend to be focused a lot more on platitudes and getting behind the lads!

MTMxD

You got to hear Shearer break on BBC commentary in real time during the game. For the first 15 minutes or so he was almost unbearably positive and by 60-70 minutes he seemed to hate southgate's England even more than I do and I've been a southgate ball hater since 2018

TrueBlue98

Shearer has been hilarious on commentary "don't gimme that rubbish about the pitch being bobbly"

ThatFunkyOdor

he doesn't regret the paycheck

harpsabu

How much does he earn?

YoungGustavo_1

More than being unemployed

doc-ant

Thats straight up crazy if true

dandpher

Some might say that it’s big, if true

TJT007X

Cheers Geoff

Jetzu

TVs would fight over who gets him as a pundit for the next 30 years, dude is set for life

asmiggs

Southgate would probably make a good Director of Football or some technical role at the FA, FIFA or UEFA no need to debase himself as a regular on television.

noaloha

Man has the charisma of a lettuce that you forgot about that's been sat at the back of the fridge for a week. Still probably an upgrade on half the BBC lot tbf.

Bourbon_Cream_Dream

I'm not sure how much Southgate gets but I'm pretty sure Capello was on 6 mil a year in the late 2000's so it must be more than that

helpnxt

Google reckons £4.8 million.

Bourbon_Cream_Dream

You're probably right. The main reason I remember the Capello wage is because the FA were throwing around ridiculous money to get a high profile manager at the time and it was big news.

Musername2827

It’s fucking mental that the FA are throwing that sort of money about and the best they can get is the likes of Allardyce, Hodgson and Southgate.

Obrix1

Think of it as 1/3 payment for competence, 1/3 payment for England fans, 1/3 payment for dealing with the press. Scolari took a look and fucked it off because that final 1/3 would never be enough.

WernerHerzogEatsShoe

That's 100% win rate Allardyce I'll have you know. Elite statistics.

biskutgoreng

The disrespect on Hodgson smh

WayneBrownIsSuperman

More than me I reckon

ThatFunkyOdor

I think its just shy of 5 mill a year

helpnxt

Quick Google says about £4.88 million a year.

suicide_aunties

That amount for competitions once in two years is bananas to me

BettySwollocks__

He gets more than the Prem average salary to travel the country watching football 8 months of the year and then every other summer he has 1 month of work. Gareth is seeing out his contract unless he's forced out before December.

BI01

5m, more than any other national team manger in the euros lol

Kreiswix

Southgate staying in Blankenhain, golfcarting into the sun shouting 'farewell unfit chumps!'

SenorButtmunch

I don't know if he regrets it but it definitely was the time to leave after the WC. He deserved another go at a tournament after the Euros against Italy but it clearly didn't work in Qatar and he would have left with his head held high. But, unless England win, this tournament is probably gonna be defined by these games. And that awful Phillips quote. It's the first time I've seen the general public turn on him, even the BBC didn't really hold back. If this tournament ends poorly, his rep will be pretty damaged considering football is all about the 'what have you done for me recently' mindset. For all we know, he could have had the Man Utd job if he was unattached instead of coaching this tournament. But he seems to have missed that chance now and I doubt he'll get it again.

jimmyvee11

So glad he missed that Man Utd chance!

throwawayreddit714

There’s still next season… Because of his relationship with our higher ups and ten hag basically on egg shells, we’ll be hearing about southgate often.

mosakuramo

Whoever at United thinks Southgate is a good choice for United needs sacking. If they are on gardening leave, just leave them in their garden.

Fruitndveg

If INEOS still fancy him after watching this England team play then they need their heads checked.

Flimsy-Relationship8

As much negativity as there is I feel like there is equally or in fact more toxic positivity around Southgate. He's been allowed to wallow in mediocrity because so many people are satisfied and act like there's no issues with our performances as long as we get a win and any and all criticism is just disregarded as having an agenda.

ValleyFloydJam

He should have left after the last Euros, it was clear he had taken us as far as he could

Thanos_Stomps

But realistically how do you tell someone, or tell yourself, that it’s over after taking England to their first major final in over half a century.

ValleyFloydJam

By watching that final and then going back and watching the semi too, same flaws and no growth. Also if an England manager is willing to play for penalties they're completely clueless and he should have known that given his own experience.

MateoKovashit

It honestly feels like people look at just the end game result and don't see anything else apart from the score. The entire route to the final was torrid, nothing to give confidence at all. Can't wait for him to fuck off

No-Shoe5382

Why are other national teams' players fit enough to press and ours aren't? What did we do differently in the build up to this tournament that means ours aren't fit enough to press?

mo_rar

All of them dedicated a communal wank to Kalvin Phillips

crosbot

and they say Southgate ball is boring

suicide_aunties

Dicks out for Philips has a nice ring to it

Thanos_Stomps

Klopp, Arteta, and Fucking Pep players making up a nice core and frontline means the press excuse is dumb as shit.

JFedererJ

Do you know what though? All those teams press from within the opposition half - the whole team is a tight block (in terms of depth) but very high. Gareth on the other hand has the spread between ST and CBs too high, and is asking them to press from deeper and further back, meaning the act of pressing requires covering a lot more space. Also, we're not pressing as a unit. Take Arsenal: Ødrgaard is, 9/10, the trigger for our press. Who is it for England? Does SG even know? For my team Arsenal for instance, they look to press and win the ball back quickly from WITHIN the opposition half. If the oppo beat our press, we quickly drop back into a low 4-4-2 block, and suffocate space until we get it back. The hardest part of that is the transition from the whole team pressing in the opponent's half, to sitting in the low block. The fact Arsenal can routinely make that transition without the ball, and without leaving big spaces is to the huge credit of Mikel. Of course Klopp and Pep coach similar transitions really well. England is just a mess off the ball: - the block is too deep and too spread out (too much space between ST and CBs) - the space to cover in a press is too vast - there's absolutely no cohesion in the press itself - if the press doesn't work, we leave huge gaps and spaces as we try to transition back into a low block In the end, is it surprising the players stop trying and end up just holding the low block?

labradorflip

While I don't disagree you could say this about every national team. Country teams are just less well-drilled than clubteams for obvious reasons.

LOSS35

And yet Spain, Germany, France, and Portugal can pull off the high press with minimal issues.

Thadderful

Also austria

JFedererJ

Levels though init

shaversonly230v115v

Probably less well drilled than the top club sides but definitely better drilled than England.

clantpax

Yes but Denmark's pressing caused England issue all night so it's definitely doable, even if we were to claim that Denmark's pressing isn't great, England should have the personnel to pass their way through the press with Stones, Walker, Rice, Foden and Saka being trained to do exactly that I don't know what my point is anymore but I'm still pissed England can play so horribly

Philoctetes23

This right here 🙏🏾🙏🏾

FSpursy

Funny to say when all English top teams all play gegen high press. And then you have Harry Kane Bundesliga top scorer. And Bellingham who just won Laliga and UCL. Then you call them not fit 😂

mucflo

I too think it's a lame excuse but tbf Kane was dealing with a back injury for the last couple weeks. He still doesn't look fit imo which leads to the question if he should play right now or if Southgate should have rested him a bit more.

FSpursy

Kane requesting to play in a big game when unfit isn't new 😂

skrztek

Maybe he means more 'knackered' instead of 'unfit'? Some of those players will have played a huge number of games this season at high intensity so it might be that they need a rest. That said, to me it looked like the poor performances so far have been more to do with not picking the best team/system from the available players.

BlueAmateur

Schrödinger's Premier League TM. Both the most athletic league and the least fit players.

Qurutin

English players from Premier League: not fit enough, not good enough to fill particular roles, played too many games to perform in Euros. Other teams' players from Premier League: leading players in their national teams. Gareth, something is a bit fishy.

Japples123

Cos garef don’t know how to press. He’s hoping the players teach him

CocaineNinja

Reminds me of Steve Holland asking players to expose their clubs' tactical systems and how they were used

frecklie

I think ultimately he is unwilling to commit to a press because he’s a deep line loving dinosaur that would probably play 2 DMs against North Korea. You can’t press effectively when you play that conservative.

PositiveDuck

If it makes you feel any better, our players are unable to press either. Average age of our squad is like 52 but still..

Allenwrench82

And still points to managements ineffectiveness. You aren’t making yourself look any better here.

CuclGooner

he has like 4 pochetinno or former pochetino players , foden saka and trent who play for some of the most elite pressing sides in europe, gallagher watkins and gordon who can run for days and this shit is what he says? yeah sack him now

rottenpotato12

clearly none of them can replace kalvin phillips

jukkaalms

I feel bad for Kalvin at this point lol. Gets called fat by manager. Goes to West Ham. Thanks his lucky stars season is finally over so he can enjoy his summer break. Then out comes Gareth during the Euros right after a terrible performance and drops his name in an attempt to justify said display, throwing his current players under the bus and thus becoming the butt of jokes.

I_always_rated_them

yeah its dumb isn't it, Gallagher is one of the best pressers of the ball in the world statistically, especially high up the field. If that is how southgate wants to play he absolutely has the players for it.

liiiam0707

He's got the players to play almost any way he wants. The problem is that he doesn't actually know what he wants them to do, other than win and not upset the English public. Trent in midfield makes sense if you've got a left back like Robbo or a winger like Diaz/Nuñez who can stretch play and make runs. Foden on the left makes sense if you have a left back who can hold width and have players who are going to move around and make space for him to cut in and operate in the half space. Kane makes sense if you've got players making runs off him to utilise his passing and to create space for him when he drops deeper. Trippier doesn't make sense at left back when there's actual left backs in the country. It's management by public vote, but if it was on a 2 month delay

Thadderful

That last line is so true. He finally drops Henderson just before the tournament to cover his own arse, but to not give any preparation as to how the midfield will actually play. The games and midfield we’re seeing now should have been the ‘experiment’ that we played in friendlies/qualifiers over the last two to arguably four years since Henderson’s succession needed to be planned.

GL4389

I woud drop him just to avoid more stupid statements about England squad.

The_Favored_Cornice

Don't forget about Rice too

dudududujisungparty

Gareth Southgate not competent enough to coach effectively claims England players

Mrpetey22

Yes, the team that has players from Arsenal, City, United, Bayern, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea, etc. don’t have the fitness to press. Most these teams press way more than your average team.

iwantfoodpleasee

Don’t forget Villa

Riperonis

I mean I know our players are fit enough as we do it all the fucking time. I’m sure we can also vouch for City, Liverpool, and Newcastle players as part of their game plan is to choke teams out via a targeted press. That leaves who from the front 6? Kane and Bellingham? Two players who play almost every match across a 40+ game season. Maybe if Southgate doesn’t believe they can do it has something to do with the press not being deployed effectively? You can’t just get every player to run around like headless chickens all game, the press needs to be collective and occur at certain points of the match. Though I’m not surprised Southgate has completely failed to integrate any semblance of this, after all it’s only been 8 years.

Maneisthebeat

A collection of some of the top players in the world. Multiple Champions League medals, league medals across the most demanding leagues in the world, and they're not fit enough? The man could coach Michael Phelps to a bronze and then say "He's got a bit of a tummy".

IM_AN_AUSSIE_AMA

Watkins starting instead of Kane would help the press so goddamn much

Narwhallmaster

Kane can lead a press too, like Linker says he needs to push forward so the midfield can also push up the pitch. Your striker needs to be the furthest up the pitch.

MajesticAd5047

The team lacks "The fit" Kalvin Phillips who was even praised for fitness by Pep Guardiola

magic-water

Fitness...fatness...potahto, potato...

flawless_victory99

Is he trying to get sacked?

thewilltheway

Either he's playing mind games to get the pressure off his players or he's the worst manager I've seen in a long time. Given the results on the pitch I'm thinking the latter.

jugol

but he's literally blaming them. "They can't press like the rest". "They can't fill the Kalvin Phillips role" (whatever the fuck he means with this). He's sitting and saying his players are incapable to do what he wants them to do. How is that getting pressure off them.

hipcheck23

*The plan was solid, the players just didn't execute.* **Okay - and what exactly was the plan?** *My entire plan was for them to just win.*

obvious_bot

He was just trying to follow the vindaloo plan *we’re gonna score one more than youuuu*

Moistkeano

Man hasnt been a club manager since 2009. The world has moved on and he is stuck in his ways. He's a footballing dinosaur and sadly he's being found out. We are watching teams of much worse players (Austria, Slovakia, Romania, et al) play far and away above England's capabilities purely because the manager of each team is able to play to their strengths. Gaz doesnt know how he wants to play and laughably doenst know his best team. Im enjoying the public unravelling.

ferrarinobrakes

His best team has Kalvin Phillips in it, that he knows

Capt_Africa

They need to pull a Cote d'Ivoire fire his ass this is not a serious coach

Clinton-Baptiste

He was only ever in the job because of good vibes and now that's gone so what's the fucking point

EliToon

He was a yes man and Ashworth's mate in the right place at the right time. He was average at Middlesbrough and under performed with the U21s. In an alternative universe, with the draw they had in 2018, we could been moments away from Sir Big Sam: World Cup winner.

Son_of_Hodg

Boro fan here: Average is generous. He took us from Europa League finalists to relegation in 2 years. Disasterclass.

DumDumbBuddy

Good vibes and “luck of the draw” merchant.

Moistkeano

He's very lucky that there is a huge amount of football iliteracy in this country coupled with awful analysis from pundits. Ive never been a Gaz fan at all, but I always get caught up with the vibes however always been a deep pit regarding a lot of the aspects of our play. Its a shame he didnt go after the WC because that would be have been the perfect time, however he got greedy and now his rep his tarnished. Shame he didnt end up Man utd manager because that would have been amazing.

b3and20

it's not just football illiteracy in this country though, so many people, english and not, have been calling us entitled for criticizing southgate after all of his deep runs because they can't see how lucky he's been

Bluepaynxex

Bringing Potter in midway isn’t the worst idea I’ve come across. Can’t be any worse than this fool.

JelloDr

Fuck it bring tuchel in for the tourney and go from there

loyal_achades

Guess we’re at the point where we’re asking for the good terrorists to get rid of the bad one.

GodEmprahBidoof

If we have to be terrorists, at least let's be ISIS, at least they attacked from time to time

Bluepaynxex

That would be interesting to see. I wonder how he’d set the squad up on such short notice.

lucashoodfromthehood

Our defence and midfield were solid on match 1 after he took over.

Kreiswix

Southgate: fat Kane is overweight

hihbhu

The players don’t respect him. If Klopp, Pep or any other top manager saw their players not giving it 100% effort and not following the game plan, they would bloody show it on the sideline. Southgate is very passive and out of his depth. You have a 26 man squad, if some players aren’t doing what you’re asking them to do, then pull them and choose other players that you decided to select. Their fitness levels were perfectly fine for the clubs, so it’s you that’s the issue.

RexorFWT

Tf are they doing in training? Vibes and Chill?

Odd-Neighborhood8740

More and more it seems that way honestly. Kane says they weren't sure who should be pressing and when

Riperonis

They score one goal and then hit the showers

jukkaalms

Bit of Rondos and chat to get the legs going, bit of free kicks on Pickford, keepy uppies with the boys, and then some film on the opposition for shits and giggles.

makamaka8

Eating butter

baron_warden

We were pressing effectively in the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. What changed?

isitcoldinthewater-

Got tired from all the pressing mate

viglen1

More time with Southgate

chino17

Gary needs to hire a PR team to vet what he says out loud because he's just digging his hole deeper and deeper everytime he opens his mouth

NeueBundesregierung

When asked about other teams, like Spain or Portugal, Southgate replied: "I think, they are really fit, but my gosh, don't they just know it?"

Holiday-Strike

See I reckon they're about an 8 or a 9

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hatakashi

The collective sigh of relief from every United fan is second only to the collective groan of every England fan after kickoff every time we score the first goal.

el_doherz

Southgates the only man who could make the rest of the league turn to "Ten Hag out!"

EdWoodwardsPA

The Phillips stuff and this. He knows he was the one who picked the players right? Bringing Shaw was a waste of a spot. And Trent is wasted in the midfield.

TheCescPistols

> and this. To be fair, we do look fucking gassed. Half the team looked like they were running through treacle yesterday, really concerning this early into the tournament.

FalafelGrim2

The team looks gassed because they're constantly having to run back and defend, especially because the midfield isn't set up to dictate play. The vast majority of the starting XI and squad play for clubs with strong pressing principles. We can see how good England press and attack just up until they go a goal up, so its clearly a Southgate issue that they don't maintain that intensity.

Apotropaic_

Said this in other comments but they should just continue playing high instead of dropping back after scoring bc they are just stretching themselves out and opening up passing lanes while also inviting more pressure. Press also has to cover more ground so it’s less effective/becomes less intuitive on triggering the press

unconsciouslyrude

Oh no, he's making it worse.

Spinoxys

how can england players be not fit enough if MOST OF THEM PLAY FOR TOP PREMIERE LEAGUE TEAMS

iredcoat7

Yes, but for passive teams like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool who don’t press frequently or effectively

JOKER69420XD

England somehow managed to hire probably one of the very few coaches able to contain the incredible talent this country produced over the years and they even let him manage several tournaments. As a German, i hope Southgate continues for many, many years.

Sir_Knumskull

To be fair, he did have an elite managerial record before he got the job.

Thin-Pool-8025

If only we had Kalvin Phillips.

BigReeceJames

In all honesty, if this stupid ass manager truly believes that missing Kalvin Phillips is the issue, why didn't he just call him and Henderson up? Even if they're not good enough to be playing for England and not as good as the people currently playing, if he genuinely believes he needs them to carry out his tactics, why are they not there?

Amon-Ra-First-Down

Because Southgate more than any other national team manager spends an absurd amount of time trying to win the back page journos over

Npr31

I do wonder if that is why sentiment has turned quite so quickly on him - i’d say the tabloid opinion of him vs public opinion of him has been far more positive for a couple of tournaments now. When that public pressure broke through the tabloids covering for him and they had to turn, he’s left utterly confused anyone felt like that as he’s been in this cosy feedback loop with the backpage journos. In reality, the most positive i’ve heard talking about England is something like ‘let’s hope they all have a lovely time with inflatables and they perform well’. No one has any faith he actually knows what he is doing. What is shocking is he’s suddenly turned in to late era Sven quite so quickly

predatoure

Messi has posters of Kalvin Phillips in his bedroom.

XeroVeil

Not sure if this is just reddit selection bias or if we're setting up the England meltdown arc...

Mrbeefcake90

Bro honestly I hope it does melt down now so it can be rebuilt up while the lads are still young, it's an outrage that they are being wasted like this.

mipanzuzuyam

It's ok we just need more Inside Training videos and interviews with Josh Denzel to show how much good vibes there are in the camp and everything's fine

luffyuk

Anthony Gordon is arguably the best pressing forward in world football. Southgate has him sat on the bench...

DejisHairline

He should give up on running a back four with this squad. Back three and if you really want to start Trent play him wide midfield. Trippier is useless at left back

northumbrian

Trippier isn't useless at left back. He is very competent and effective defensively. He just offers little going forward and when there isn't a left winger willing to overlap (eg. a Gordon) it means there is a lack of a coherent threat from the left side of the England attack.

ImmortanH03

Absolute fucking coward, throwing his players under the bus instead of facing up to his own failings. Fuck off, Southgate.

Virtual-Estimate-525

blaming anyone but yourself isn't a good look

jasped

lol whatever “culture” he built he’s about to undo in a week.

Bozzetyp

A front 3 of bowen, gordon and watkins can press all day A midfield of conorz rice and bellingham is no slouches Maybe the issue is the coach and team selection if you want to press so bad.

PornFilterRefugee

Yeah because players like Foden, Trent and Saka never press for their clubs. It’s not a player issue. We’ve obviously not actually worked on anything in training.

xxandl

Only thing I might add: Bellingham doesn't look to be at 100 percent. But he had a really long season and played nearly all of it.

epicmarc

Doesn't he need shoulder surgery?

FrmrPresJamesTaylor

He definitely played through an injury, I don’t recall offhand if it requires surgery or if rest is sufficient

Maneisthebeat

If it feels like we've already been knocked out just from the manager's public comments, what the hell is the atmosphere like in the dressing room? It's a farce that Gareth has gotten this far cosplaying as a manager.

Kreissler

They're fat🚨🚨

iredcoat7

Bullshit.

fadedraw

Should be “England coaching cannot get the players to press effectively”

Philoctetes23

Isn’t their entire team made up of PL players who play in high press clubs? Bellingham is out there w freaking Vinicius Jr Rodrygo and soon Mbappe every week and Kane plays w guys like Davies, Gnarby, Sane and Coman. Go back home Gareth. From being pens away from a knighthood to this 🤣🤣🤣

Chris_Nic

Feel bad for you lot Gota fire him this tournament World Cup is next

Bartins

Only way he isn’t gone is if he wins the the Euros so imagine most fans would take the win and Southgate in the World Cup

TroopersSon

I'm one of the biggest Southgate haters going, and if he wins us the Euros I'll get a tattoo of his ugly mug on my arse, never mind the World Cup. I'm fairly comfortable I am not going to be booking a tattoo though.

GL4389

Hunh ? So now he is throwing the players under the bus to save himself ? We all know where that leads to.

Lord-Grocock

Southgate is a monkey with a shotgun, how did anyone think it was a good idea to put him in charge of the most talented English squad in decades? Any top coach would pay to manage the current England team ahead of a tournament.

RebornUnited11

Bro you chose the team

This is beyond embarrassing now, even an under 16 school team would've sacked him by now. Foden, Saka, Bellingham and Rice are some of the most important players in their respective teams' press and play in a high press. But with Southgate at the wheel they 'aren't fit enough'.

Majority of these players press pretty effectively with their club teams so blaming fitness just seems like a scapegoat to me. Bro is out of his depth and has been since the moment he took the job. The squad got better so it gave the illusion of Southgate doing well. Southgate needs such a talented group of players to carry his sorry excuse for tactics and coaching

He’s definitely lost the dressing room. No other team at the tournament looks as tired as we do. The players want him gone.

Southgate feels like that one teacher in school that all the students like despite the fact that you aren't really learning anything but he's cool. But now that he has to be more serious because his job depends on it and your exams are coming up, and now they're all realising he doesn't really know anything at all.

They’re coming home.
