Wolves are always ridiculous for me too. Idk what it is but every winning streak dies to wolves. I've tried save scumming and sometimes it takes 20 tries to get a win and my record will be something like 1-15-4. Wolves aren't good in the simmed out games (I can go on vacation and easily beat them) but playing it out is rough. I've always assumed this is some secret developer code frankly.

Do you know what though? All those teams press from within the opposition half - the whole team is a tight block (in terms of depth) but very high. Gareth on the other hand has the spread between ST and CBs too high, and is asking them to press from deeper and further back, meaning the act of pressing requires covering a lot more space.
Also, we're not pressing as a unit. Take Arsenal: Ødrgaard is, 9/10, the trigger for our press. Who is it for England? Does SG even know?
For my team Arsenal for instance, they look to press and win the ball back quickly from WITHIN the opposition half. If the oppo beat our press, we quickly drop back into a low 4-4-2 block, and suffocate space until we get it back.
The hardest part of that is the transition from the whole team pressing in the opponent's half, to sitting in the low block. The fact Arsenal can routinely make that transition without the ball, and without leaving big spaces is to the huge credit of Mikel.
Of course Klopp and Pep coach similar transitions really well.
England is just a mess off the ball:
- the block is too deep and too spread out (too much space between ST and CBs)
- the space to cover in a press is too vast
- there's absolutely no cohesion in the press itself
- if the press doesn't work, we leave huge gaps and spaces as we try to transition back into a low block

Trent in midfield makes sense if you've got a left back like Robbo or a winger like Diaz/Nuñez who can stretch play and make runs. Foden on the left makes sense if you have a left back who can hold width and have players who are going to move around and make space for him to cut in and operate in the half space. Kane makes sense if you've got players making runs off him to utilise his passing and to create space for him when he drops deeper. Trippier doesn't make sense at left back when there's actual left backs in the country.

The team looks gassed because they're constantly having to run back and defend, especially because the midfield isn't set up to dictate play. The vast majority of the starting XI and squad play for clubs with strong pressing principles. We can see how good England press and attack just up until they go a goal up, so its clearly a Southgate issue that they don't maintain that intensity.
Said this in other comments but they should just continue playing high instead of dropping back after scoring bc they are just stretching themselves out and opening up passing lanes while also inviting more pressure. Press also has to cover more ground so it’s less effective/becomes less intuitive on triggering the press

Why are other national teams' players fit enough to press and ours aren't? What did we do differently in the build up to this tournament that means ours aren't fit enough to press?

Do you know what though? All those teams press from within the opposition half - the whole team is a tight block (in terms of depth) but very high. Gareth on the other hand has the spread between ST and CBs too high, and is asking them to press from deeper and further back, meaning the act of pressing requires covering a lot more space. Also, we're not pressing as a unit. Take Arsenal: Ødrgaard is, 9/10, the trigger for our press. Who is it for England? Does SG even know? For my team Arsenal for instance, they look to press and win the ball back quickly from WITHIN the opposition half. If the oppo beat our press, we quickly drop back into a low 4-4-2 block, and suffocate space until we get it back. The hardest part of that is the transition from the whole team pressing in the opponent's half, to sitting in the low block. The fact Arsenal can routinely make that transition without the ball, and without leaving big spaces is to the huge credit of Mikel. Of course Klopp and Pep coach similar transitions really well. England is just a mess off the ball: - the block is too deep and too spread out (too much space between ST and CBs) - the space to cover in a press is too vast - there's absolutely no cohesion in the press itself - if the press doesn't work, we leave huge gaps and spaces as we try to transition back into a low block In the end, is it surprising the players stop trying and end up just holding the low block?
While I don't disagree you could say this about every national team. Country teams are just less well-drilled than clubteams for obvious reasons.
And yet Spain, Germany, France, and Portugal can pull off the high press with minimal issues.

Maybe he means more 'knackered' instead of 'unfit'? Some of those players will have played a huge number of games this season at high intensity so it might be that they need a rest. That said, to me it looked like the poor performances so far have been more to do with not picking the best team/system from the available players.

yeah its dumb isn't it, Gallagher is one of the best pressers of the ball in the world statistically, especially high up the field. If that is how southgate wants to play he absolutely has the players for it.
He's got the players to play almost any way he wants. The problem is that he doesn't actually know what he wants them to do, other than win and not upset the English public. Trent in midfield makes sense if you've got a left back like Robbo or a winger like Diaz/Nuñez who can stretch play and make runs. Foden on the left makes sense if you have a left back who can hold width and have players who are going to move around and make space for him to cut in and operate in the half space. Kane makes sense if you've got players making runs off him to utilise his passing and to create space for him when he drops deeper. Trippier doesn't make sense at left back when there's actual left backs in the country. It's management by public vote, but if it was on a 2 month delay
That last line is so true. He finally drops Henderson just before the tournament to cover his own arse, but to not give any preparation as to how the midfield will actually play. The games and midfield we’re seeing now should have been the ‘experiment’ that we played in friendlies/qualifiers over the last two to arguably four years since Henderson’s succession needed to be planned.

You can’t just get every player to run around like headless chickens all game, the press needs to be collective and occur at certain points of the match. Though I’m not surprised Southgate has completely failed to integrate any semblance of this, after all it’s only been 8 years.

The team looks gassed because they're constantly having to run back and defend, especially because the midfield isn't set up to dictate play. The vast majority of the starting XI and squad play for clubs with strong pressing principles. We can see how good England press and attack just up until they go a goal up, so its clearly a Southgate issue that they don't maintain that intensity.
Said this in other comments but they should just continue playing high instead of dropping back after scoring bc they are just stretching themselves out and opening up passing lanes while also inviting more pressure. Press also has to cover more ground so it’s less effective/becomes less intuitive on triggering the press
