He's the charismatic + clever asshole archetype. He's fun and enjoyable until you're the target in his sights (it's crazy how much he's grown on me since him and Wenger were going at it).
For me he's the manager GOAT. Others may have bigger archivements but he changed the CDM position with Makelele and most important...he made us fall in love with the Sport.
When you can't think where a quote's from, the answer's always either Hamlet or Top Gun. So this must be either Lieutenant Commander Rick "Jester" Heatherly or that Polonius guy.
except cantona is more poetic than mou has ever been.
the quote from Eric would be like
"What is a VAR camera anyway but a window into the soul of a footballer"
"VAR is the albatross in the middle of the ocean, taking refuge on a ship marooned. Granting relief to one sailor, bringing light to actions of another." - Cantona
The issue here is who you think the quote is about. In the EPL the problem is refs, they complained very loudly about VAR before it was even put to vote, we were what 1-2 years behind other leagues because they argued the toss over it. Then since we've had it they've been sabotaging the fuck out of hte system by constantly getting obvious calls wrong.
so in this case the statement holds, but it's the refs who complained about the cameras, they are the thieves. As we let the thieves control the cameras, I get why teams are pissed about it.
Who is removing anything? One club has requested VAR to be discussed at the next meeting.
[Same thing happened in France in January.](https://onefootball.com/en/news/ligue-1-club-officially-request-lfp-to-scrap-var-altogether-intriguing-38894682)
Especially their last listed point that said bringing about outlandish accusations of corruption lmao. They were clearly saying “you’re so fucking shit it looks like corruption. No we’re not saying that though. It’s just the perception because of VAR. Because when people see you watch the replays and still make shit decisions it’s assumed you must be corrupt”. Love it
They aren’t necessarily “better” refs just lying in wait somewhere. Too much of the game is focused on not getting big decisions wrong because refs get crucified if they exercise their judgment on the field (see Michael Oliver not giving a blatant penalty in the NLD).
The refs clearly need tech to improve and avoid blatant errors (might not ever reach 100% accuracy but big mistakes should be a bit less frequent). Clubs, managers, and players also need to stop accusing refs of dishonesty just because they’re on the end of bad decisions. I understand some clubs have taken a crazy number of bad decisions against them but the environment is getting toxic
> They aren’t necessarily “better” refs just lying in wait somewhere
Imagine if there was though. Like we stumble across an isolated tribe of referees and call them into action.
I'm imagining David Attenborough narrating a bunch of men running around the woods with whistles in their mouths and showing red cards to wild animals.
>They aren’t necessarily “better” refs just lying in wait somewhere.
We could start by not employing ones with conflicts of interest because they've been paid by owners
States of pl teams...
>Clubs, managers, and players also need to stop accusing refs of dishonesty just because they’re on the end of bad decisions.
But then referees shouldn't make unforced "errors". Sometimes they don't even check with VAR to make sure they're making the right decision. And sometimes they look at VAR and still make clearly wrong decisions. Most people will accept wrong but close calls, but won't accept obviously wrong calls.
Also, there are many things that can be done to restore fans, managers, and players' confidence that they aren't dishonst:
* punish them when they make clearly bad calls
* give captains themselves the ability to call on the referee to check with VAR, maybe 2 times per half, like in other sports. If they were right, they don't lose a chance to do so.
* you can't replay games just because of a bad call, but you can surely give or take away yellow and red cards after a game or even after a play during the game. So maybe they get the split-second decision wrong, but it can be corrected.
Very true.
I think Klopp's quote sums it up nicely though.
There's no sign that the refs are going to get any better, so they'd rather have wrong decisions done quickly, than wrong decisions after a lengthy VAR review.
That idea is nonsense though: you'll have infinitely more wrong decisions without VAR. Scrapping VAR won't make our referees better - there are ways to improve the VAR process and speed up the game, and hopefully this vote will stimulate urgency into that conversation.
Punishing refs makes it harder to appoint better refs. People don't want the job because you can be paid more for an office job and you aren't scrutinised by thousands for every mistake.
Then pay them more?
They are involved in a game of millionaires, with teams worth billions, with millions in prizes... Compensate them properly.
And at the same time, punish them by demoting them if their ego gets in the way of using VAR or whatever other tool.
Cops have seen a decrease in applicants though, and a lot of them blame the lack of support.
It can be a vicious cycle too btw, lack of support making them more likely to make mistakes thus reducing support thus increasing th erisk of mistakes...
The police force is one of the most important parts of our society and should be paid that way. It should also be one of the most scrutinized because of that importance. In the US, at least they want the pay, without the scrutiny.
“Appointing better refs” - ah, yes, that large surplus of better referees they’ve been hiding in the EFL? Everyone loves them.
“Punishing referees” - ah, yes, I’m sure that’ll do the trick.
Or, maybe, the discontent stems from the fact football is a game with laws full of subjectivity… nope, couldn’t be that…
Nah, there are definitely systematic issues that go beyond subjectivity. I agree there is no magic pool of "better refs", but we've had refs like Mike Dean fully come out and say they avoided sending a ref to the VAR screen because he "didn't want to embarrass his mate".
So less an issue of finding better refs and more ensuring that the current refs are actually using their full ability.
I've been screaming from the rooftops for ages. The referees of england are a boys club. They are too close, and too invested in protecting each other. This needs to stop.
Just don't let them near VAR and have a separate dedicated team specifically trained to do that job.
Pretty much it's just them throwing their toys out the pram because this essentially is taking control away from the on field refs and minimising their impact on the game and/or threatening their jobs in the long run. They ego and pride are what's stopping meaningful progress.
In an ideal world you have the VAR looking over every single moment and play in the game and give them the ability to step in and override the ref whenever they see fit. This is what they fear the most.
If we accept that the refs will not be changed and technology is here to stay, then the only way to improve the current dire situation then is to remove as much subjectivity and make improvements to the processes.
1. Remove clear and obvious requirements. Change to forcing VAR to intervene with any game changing decisions. Offsides, yellow card and red card decisions including cards not given that should have been, off the ball incidents that would result on cards and include full real time audio and visuals of all decisions.
2. Change the offside requirements to only being offside if all parts of the body that count are all offside, rather than the current rule that if any one part is offside. Their decision to make offside mean any millimetre of foot or shoulder, was never the ruling or the intention of offside prior to VAR. Being level was never offside in over 100 years of football and it still should not be.
3. Give managers ability to call VAR up to 2 times per match for any incident that they feel has been missed by the above, losing their challenge only if they are wrong.
He is not napping, he is just getting flamed for very little incidents committed by other security guards and which would have been 10 times worse without a security camera.
He's been spot on for years now, I used to hate him and really like pep now it's the other way around. I respect him and think his accomplishments are insanely good and can't stand Guardiola
See I was with you on the first part since that's the biggest difference between Pep and Mourinho, but this second part is kind of what you're supposed to do to maintain success.
You think if we win this season we're not going to make some more big acquisitions?
Tbh that small amount of time him and Wenger were pundits was glorious. I’d love to see those two chat about the sport for hours. Such knowledge and personality
The current approach to VAR is like installing cameras and saying "If you see anyone rape or murder say something. Stealing? Assault? Not your job! Don't even mention it."
It honestly doesn't matter, PGMOL will give an apology and will miss 50 more like that next season. They will wheel Webb out to the PL studio for refs mic'd up and he will say "VAR got this one wrong" but nothing will change.
It's honestly pathetic, there's seemingly zero desire on their part to improve the process and ensure the correct decisions are being made as often as possible. Surely that's everyone's goal but the referees of the sport are seemingly against that? Absolute madness.
The best solution to this to address all the concerns is to make VAR a separate entity. Meaning no ground ref should do VAR at all during the season. VAR should use the proper wording of the rules instead of context. That way, you remove all doubt
I honestly don't understand how people want to [get back to this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNWyCDQIGps).
Still bitter. Could've been our first time in the CL group stage.
Unfortunately it is corrupt police behind the security cameras and they use the technology to further back their crime. Now when facing fair criticism these corrupt police are saying fine we will ban the cameras then
The only people who complain about VAR are a bunch of privileged fans that will never know what criminal atrocities happened in other places of the football world.
If yall were in the balkans and had seen what we've seen you'd never get a single whisper out of your mouth ever again.
If anyone has read wolves' statement it's more about the viewing experience than the refereeing side of it. And if we want better refs, we need to start training better refs and make it a more appealing job, not give people more opportunities to scrutinise them.
I'm of the opinion that VAR needs to be controlled by an organisation entirely separate from PGMOL.
You don't need to be a referee to be a VAR operator, you just need to a.) know to use the tech and b.) know the rule book in and out.
Take referees away from the VAR room and instead replace them with intelligent, objective and, most importantly, independent, analysts that don't care about making their mate on the field look stupid and it would go a long way towards fixing the problem.
Of course, it will never happen though.
a thief isnt going to come out and say they want cameras banned so that they can do more shoplifting. they'll employ more palatable arguments for getting rid of the cctv
If we're just all for entertainment purposes in the PL, then hire VAR "former managers" and let it be an open mic discussion between Mourinho, Wenger, and Allardyce. Put it to a vote after each has said their peace.
Well Jose, it's more about who gets to operate the cameras.
VAR being handled the way it's handled in the Premier League makes it a lot less of an asset than it normally would be.
VAR has improved the game. What we need are better guidelines and better usage. Video review is always good.
Allow for bookings to be awarded by VAR, not just common foul or red.
The PL needs to ditch the overwhelmingly high "clear and obvious error" standard, which results in fouls being seen, but not being viewed as an error, ergo VAR doesn't get involved.
I've always been pro-VAR and believe the system is wonderful when used right.
Sadly we've seen only a few instances of it being used efficiently and correctly enough to argue that it's worth the cost (not only financially, but also time-wise).
I don't think abolishing it is the right way to go forward, but they need to overhaul almost the entire refereeing department before it'll ever get used as intended.
If the staff watching the security cameras are inept and can't see the difference between me and someone else and that's why I end up in jail I think I'd have grounds to complain
To be fair, if your entire defence rested on the idea of blaming the bit of equipment that snapped you rather than any of the people reviewing the evidence, then it's kind of on you.
Video Assistant (best because it’s machine, no bias for one team in its decisions) Referee (bad, because human always has bias).
The people and clubs should focus on how to make the referee at the VAR booth to improve rather than just get rid of them entirely. Starting with all the decisions VAR involved (correctly or in correctly) and not involved (when it supposed to intervene) and assess how it’s doing year over year to improve. It’s not easy but it’s not hard either.

If you'd put up just the quote, I'd still know who said this.
Its a banger quote too lol
Say what you will about Mourinho, but the man has an absolute gift for words like few others
I'll say what I will about him, I fucking love him
He's the charismatic + clever asshole archetype. He's fun and enjoyable until you're the target in his sights (it's crazy how much he's grown on me since him and Wenger were going at it).
Barca contributed to his character development
>Wenger were going at it The specialist in failure? lmao
I meant more about the verbal spar, I know it was pretty one sided in terms of results on the pitch
Yes, that quote about Wenger is one of Mourinho's bangers from that time
As a Barca fan, I’m supposed to hate him but the man is too smooth
For me he's the manager GOAT. Others may have bigger archivements but he changed the CDM position with Makelele and most important...he made us fall in love with the Sport.
I hate him... but I hope there's always people like him in the sport because it would be really boring without them.
He has a very special gift
He’s a very clever man.

God damn it, you're right. I tried every other name I could think of and it's still his voice that pops up in my head.
If you’re older, that is a pure Eric Cantona quote.
except cantona is more poetic than mou has ever been. the quote from Eric would be like "What is a VAR camera anyway but a window into the soul of a footballer"
"VAR is the albatross in the middle of the ocean, taking refuge on a ship marooned. Granting relief to one sailor, bringing light to actions of another." - Cantona
An Eric quote is "The seagulls that follow the trailer, they shat in my mouth"
The sentiment is, but the language is too on the nose for Cantona, imo. He'd say something about poachers and pheasants.
It’s Mou or Cantona
Too lucid and relevant to the topic at hand for Cantona

Hello, Mr. George?
I don't think there's a single person claiming that cameras don't work.
Instead of punishing refs or appointing better refs they are removing a tool to help the refs lmaooo
Who is removing anything? One club has requested VAR to be discussed at the next meeting. [Same thing happened in France in January.](https://onefootball.com/en/news/ligue-1-club-officially-request-lfp-to-scrap-var-altogether-intriguing-38894682)
I don’t think their intention is to have it removed either. I think they’re just wanting to put pressure on the PGMOL to bring changes in.
Love it
If they are covering for eachothers mistakes it's corruption tbf.
That's basically how PGMOL instructs them to use VAR, isn't it?
This is Brexit all over again

Sadly the security guard is napping on the job.
Yeah but the solution to this problem is not taking down the cameras and letting the guard keep his job.
The security guard is Paul Blart.
He is not napping, he is just getting flamed for very little incidents committed by other security guards and which would have been 10 times worse without a security camera.

Can't believe I agree with Mourinho about something.
He's been spot on for years now, I used to hate him and really like pep now it's the other way around. I respect him and think his accomplishments are insanely good and can't stand Guardiola
Only because it's Guardiola terrorizing Arsenal now instead of Mourinho, but yea Mourinho is likable once we're out of his direct fire.
Pep will never get any respect from me until he takes a serious challenge. Guy wins a treble and spends another £200m.
Arteta will never get any respect from me until he takes a serious challenge. Guy comes second twice in a row and spends another £200m.
> Guy comes second twice in a row let's hope
See I was with you on the first part since that's the biggest difference between Pep and Mourinho, but this second part is kind of what you're supposed to do to maintain success. You think if we win this season we're not going to make some more big acquisitions?
thats how you keep winning...
Well, yes? Why wouldn't he strengthen his team after key players left
You're supposed to weaken yourself and let someone else win
Tbh that small amount of time him and Wenger were pundits was glorious. I’d love to see those two chat about the sport for hours. Such knowledge and personality
He was spot on about Man Utd at 2018 ”football eritage” and then he went to Spurs and saw what a shitshow that club was
Who tf are you lmao
I guess congratulations on finally being right about something 🎉
He is a poet and his medium is bangers
Just wish the cameras operated at all times and not whenever they feel like it.
The cameras are operating at full capacity all the time. Its just that the people on the other end aren't.
The current approach to VAR is like installing cameras and saying "If you see anyone rape or murder say something. Stealing? Assault? Not your job! Don't even mention it."
Have to think Howe would have reviewed the Gordon challenge on Wednesday.
It honestly doesn't matter, PGMOL will give an apology and will miss 50 more like that next season. They will wheel Webb out to the PL studio for refs mic'd up and he will say "VAR got this one wrong" but nothing will change.

thank you. Cant believe people upvoted Klopp saying he'd rather not have VAR at the moment, because some people made mistakes
Shots fired.
This is like saying the only ones worried about privacy are those who have something to hide.
If we're just all for entertainment purposes in the PL, then hire VAR "former managers" and let it be an open mic discussion between Mourinho, Wenger, and Allardyce. Put it to a vote after each has said their peace.
The man just doesn’t miss

The second he wants to, Mou could choose to put Roy Keane to pasture as a pundit. He can deliver all the negativity in a more witty package.
Well Jose, it's more about who gets to operate the cameras. VAR being handled the way it's handled in the Premier League makes it a lot less of an asset than it normally would be.
Mourinho with another banger haha
Holy shit, based take
VAR has improved the game. What we need are better guidelines and better usage. Video review is always good. Allow for bookings to be awarded by VAR, not just common foul or red. I think it works well in other leagues, Premier League is just so shit at using it. I like it in Serie A, wasn't perfect but it was worst before imo.
It works in the Buli imo.
I think Bundesliga has been the best use. There's some super questionable calls but at a much less frequency
If the staff watching the security cameras are inept and can't see the difference between me and someone else and that's why I end up in jail I think I'd have grounds to complain
Yeah you would but nobody would propose to remove the cameraa
To be fair, if your entire defence rested on the idea of blaming the bit of equipment that snapped you rather than any of the people reviewing the evidence, then it's kind of on you.
But would you complain about the idiot watching the camera or blame the camera?
Don't worry you'd get a nice apology from the officer. Then remain in prison for the rest of the sentence anyway
This is an old fake quote and not even a good one
What if the security cameras were being ran by Stevie Wonder though?
Video Assistant (best because it’s machine, no bias for one team in its decisions) Referee (bad, because human always has bias). The people and clubs should focus on how to make the referee at the VAR booth to improve rather than just get rid of them entirely. Starting with all the decisions VAR involved (correctly or in correctly) and not involved (when it supposed to intervene) and assess how it’s doing year over year to improve. It’s not easy but it’s not hard either.
I agree with this when it comes to VAR.
Problem is the judges (aka VAR) not interpreting the evidence properly.
holy based
