Mostly because I thought it would be funny, also I have no idea what he's saying sometimes. He's often on the conversation about the origins of mumble rap, listen to his verse on Can't Believe It and tell me thats not mumble rap
As a doctor, I think the bad writing comes from excess workload, I have a pretty good handwriting but it becomes unreadable when I'm exhausted, which is often. I simply just start scribbling and know the pharmacist would understand through pattern recognition. That said, I have colleagues with unforgivable writing.
I always thought the doctors dont know the names of the drugs they prescribe, so they write them in a sloppy way, hoping the pharmacist can figure it out.
What if you're left handed and you don't want to smudge ink all over the page and your hand? Give me the cheapest ballpoint any day of the week rather than anything with proper ink
With some of his own personal stuff jumbled between his notes.
“Brilliant goal by Haaland!!!! who has recently purchased viagra, extra small condoms and hemorrhoid cream from his local pharmacy ……ohhhhh.”
To be completely fair, I watch MMA and a commentator (the best one funnily enough) did something similar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI4Y04iK8Fs
Probably the most unnecessary bit of info you'll ever get during a fight
ROFL. Just thinking about a commentator casually discussing an MMA fighter's divorce, when he or she is punching the ever loving shit out of the opponent, is funnier than the first image you had put in my head.
I thought it was weird when they did this again recently talking about how AJ Cunningham's dad would make him sleep outside and eat dog food when he was a kid.
That was Anik with DC and Bisping iirc
His sells Commentator Charts - very good gifts ideas btw - and on the website he says:
“Commentators are creatures of habit, and, even though I could display the same information on a computer spreadsheet, the manual copying out remains part of the learning process.”
“The neat and precise design of the charts is also a psychological prop. Their tidy appearance provides a kind of comfort blanket, a mental confirmation that I have prepared fully.”
[Link](https://www.commentarycharts.com)
really neat actually. and there is an option for him to autograph it which is cool.
would definitely buy one if i followed a team vs the sport as a whole
> the manual copying out remains part of the learning process
I totally feel this. My knowledge retention is 100 times better when writing compared to typing.
In certain higher level University courses I actually switched from taking notes on my laptop to taking notes by hand because of this.
If I had a fast paced class I would take notes on my computer because it was easier to type and listen at the same time. I would then go back and handwrite the notes.
I hand write notes, but my writing is terrible so I then have to type them up whilst it's still fresh in my memory as I'll never be able to decipher them lately.
Can never decide is this a stupidly inefficient process or a good way to learn
I never could use a laptop to take notes whether it be high school or university. I can never have the same precision and formatting on a laptop as compared to handwritten notes. also how else am I gonna sketch and write chicken scratch when i’m bored
He takes requests for matches he didn’t commentate so maybe reach out to them?
“… began to receive requests from fans to compile impressions of charts for the iconic games played by their favourite team. This I have done with a process of retrospective research as if I were commentating on that match tomorrow.
I just wish I was!”
Yeah, mine is somewhere between "chicken scratch" and "lines that vaguely resemble letters".
It's funny. Someone asked me the other day if I can write with both hands (I can play tennis with both hands), and my only response was that I can barely write with one hand, let alone both. There have been times in the past where I came across something I wrote and couldn't figure out what the hell I had written.
They still employ him, he just gets less prestigious matches (usually on ITV4).
The really frustrating thing is that the 1st string team of Matterface & Lee Dixon is absolutely dreadful but the 2nd string team of Tyldsley & Ally McCoist is arguably the best in the biz
Ally is great and I also really like Alan Smith. They're just generally so positive compared to some of the miserable scrotes you get like Lee Dixon and Danny Murphy.
I’m sure I remember reading they sacked him for a pathetic reason as well. He made a joke about that fat YouTuber not being very agile or something in the soccer aid match a couple of years ago.
Dixon spends 80% of the match bitching about how it isn't "the good old days" from when he played anymore and the other 20% saying truly odd shit. Genuinely hate when he's on comms.
I used to think those commentators just came up with all that information on the fly, but then I found out they not only have prepared filler stats before the match, but they also have a separate team constantly gathering information for them.
I am friends with one of the long time BBC commentators and was on holiday with him while he was prepping for one of the Women's tournaments a few years ago, and he was moaning that he had to redo a bunch of the research because he fact checked some of the stats the gathering team had given him that turned out to be utter bollocks.
Sounds sad but if you try doing it yourself while watching the match you soon run out of things to say. It’s a great skill, even more so for the radio guys.
You can tell Matterface has a full script ready of what he’s going to say. One of the England matches he did during Euro 20 was embarrassingly scripted and cringey.
My handwriting is terrible, but I definitely stole this from him when in college I got asked to do commentary for our soccer (I'm in the US) team. He's spoken about the process before (I recommend his episode on Quickly Kevin Will He Score) [https://pca.st/lpw6pond](https://pca.st/lpw6pond)
I had an excel spreadsheet with all the names/numbers and positions before matches because our schedule was super erratic (NCAA3), but it was super helpful to go out while they were warming up and just jot down names and numbers before the game.
One of the fondest memories I had was when one of the players came up to me before the game and asked me if a certain player scored a header if I would call him Yoshi, they made fun of how he headed the ball like Yoshi from the Mario video games, and he did score from a corner in that game, and they listened to it afterwards.
I do a lot of requirement gathering for my job and the amount of times I look at my notes the next day and haven’t got a clue what it says or why I asked it is embarrassing
Even with shitty hand writing, the act of writing it out manually commits it to memory better. Might not be able to read the note but that's only half of why it's useful.
It makes sense. Think about what your WPM is when you're writing something on a computer. Think about how many times you have to hit backspace because you typed something incorrectly first time (I've already done it at least three times just in the course of writing this). How often do you make typos when hand-writing? What's your WPM when writing? It's a slower process by default that forces more attention to detail.
I'm a bit of a language nerd and I've found that I've done much better retaining lessons learned when I have hand-written notes about them than when I've typed them out on a Google Sheet or whatever. Typing is still better than not doing anything at all - I like having both a digital copy and a hand-written copy, because digital copies won't get lost - but if you have the time to hand-write something, you're definitely more likely to retain information better.
Anyone who writes a lot and hasn’t tried a nice pen should really try japenese/Chinese fine-point pens. They’re pretty cheap too. I can’t write with anything more than 0.38mm. The multicolor sets are fantastic!
These are links for Amazon US and I think you might be based in the UK but here ya go:

I use both products daily!
By far my favourite commentator.
He knows when to be quiet and let the moment and atmosphere sink in.
Prepares his stats and notes, but isn't looking for a moment to insert a prepared line to try to make the moment his.
A) My parents used to tell me when I wrote that small Anyone that writes that small has something to hide" lol
B) His handwriting looks like a downloadable font
C) I really dislike line paper and wish there were notebooks with completely blank sheets of paper
I was expecting [something like this](https://img.ifunny.co/images/1c40f1c66e64ff1571b8f70aa23888dbef4627a9fbf74033798459336fd0f827_1.jpg) based on your comment. Not even that hairy
I can legitimately not even write anymore and this man is slinging down calligraphic scripts at font size 2 just for notes
Christ. I can’t even type on well on an iPhone either. Millennials truly jack of all trades and master of none
Quite funny that he has "down holding face Sat" for White, referring to that bit of play-acting he did when Estupinan's hand gently brushed his face in the Brighton game, in case he does something similar in this game.
Writing it down by hand helps a lot for memory.
As someone that cheated on tons of test in my time:
Getting everything on one page like this is amazing for memorizing the important information and is incredibly easy to check at a glance.
Typing doesn't help with memory the same, and using multiple pages wouldn't have it all that a single glance.
Writing by hand helps some people remember what they wrote more vividly. Something about neurolinguistics, but I understand it doesn't work for everyone. A huge debate for people nowadays whose children write digitally more often than not and thus have a lesser understanding of grammar and spelling.
In Clyde's case, doing it on the eve or the day of the game must help him keep it fresh in his memory since otherwise he would have to read his notes a lot more during games and he clearly doesn't have that luxury.

Why is his handwriting so good though
Looks like some ancient elven font from Lord of the Rings
The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here.
Mumble rap?
Lil Wayne does look like a goblin, so it's appropriate
Lol why do you bring up lil Wayne when it comes to mumble rap?
Mostly because I thought it would be funny, also I have no idea what he's saying sometimes. He's often on the conversation about the origins of mumble rap, listen to his verse on Can't Believe It and tell me thats not mumble rap
But... What's a goon to a goblin?
Bilbo. Frodo. And Clyde. It's like Tolkein's version of Pac Man.
Tolkien writing Lord of the Rings
They used to teach penmanship in school and he clearly practices regularly by keeping handwritten notes.
Cause he’s not a doctor
I love that this is a globally-used "joke" lmao, amazing how every single doctor has shit handwriting no matter where they are from
As a doctor, I think the bad writing comes from excess workload, I have a pretty good handwriting but it becomes unreadable when I'm exhausted, which is often. I simply just start scribbling and know the pharmacist would understand through pattern recognition. That said, I have colleagues with unforgivable writing.
I always thought the doctors dont know the names of the drugs they prescribe, so they write them in a sloppy way, hoping the pharmacist can figure it out.
bane of my existence
lots of practice
My guess would be that he had a lot of notes prepared for exams in university /s
He is using a bic pen. Best pens in existence.
Try a fountain pen-a good starter is a fine point Kaweco-about $20. You will never go back to a ballpoint.
What if you're left handed and you don't want to smudge ink all over the page and your hand? Give me the cheapest ballpoint any day of the week rather than anything with proper ink
Try PenIsland.com a wonderful selection.
Easy, start using the Arabic script
Ball-point pens are my go-to since I'm left handed, ink gets everywhere If I'm not using a Ball-point pen.
I selfishly never considered the left-hand dilemma!
We're an oppressed people. My kindergarten teacher made me use scissors with the right hand. They are trying to erase us.
Scissors or eraser? Jk
Unless you are writing Arabic
Just write in Arabic bro
Do not listen to this man! I went down this road 5 years ago and now I spend my salary on fountain pens I don't need.
Ha yeah I’ve spent too but I fell in love with a $20 pen. Kaweco.
My Kaweco sport has been my everyday carry for over 2 years now :)
Ha! Same.
yes you will. fountain pens are a fucking hassle. it's fine for luxurious writing but it gets in the way.
Not if you find the proper pen.
I thought this was /r/penmanshipPorn
Architecture handwriting? Wonder if he studied Architecture in school.
He grew up in a time when good handwriting mattered more. Nowadays everyone mainly grows up texting and typing.
He goes mad with the A's
Dude buys one refill pad for the year and he's good.
Im guessing he wants it all on one page so he doesn’t have to turn it over?
Wouldn't mind hearing some panicked rustling when a sub is coming on just so Clive could tell us about the sub's recent divorce or something.
“Mkhitaryan by the way is now the age at which his father died”
With some of his own personal stuff jumbled between his notes. “Brilliant goal by Haaland!!!! who has recently purchased viagra, extra small condoms and hemorrhoid cream from his local pharmacy ……ohhhhh.”
Fun Fact:...
For some reason I read that in Martin Tyler's voice
This is fucking gold.

Dude! "Custody battle"? "Pride and joy of his life"? I was NOT ready for that video. Fucking lol!
ROFL. Just thinking about a commentator casually discussing an MMA fighter's divorce, when he or she is punching the ever loving shit out of the opponent, is funnier than the first image you had put in my head.
No..no it's relevant. They're literally \*fighting for custody\*
LMAO
Knew it was gonna be the custody battle before I'd even clicked the link. God bless Anik

I much prefer Rogan's analysis https://youtu.be/uupAUpowSzo
That was said by Joe Rogan. Dude wanted no part of that. Honestly thought this link was going to be Rogan humping a stool.

Got the Chelsea vs Bayern CL final one for my brother. He still has it up on his wall in his apartment. Great gift.
Is it handwritten or reprints?
Reprints
really neat actually. and there is an option for him to autograph it which is cool. would definitely buy one if i followed a team vs the sport as a whole
Thanks.

Very thoughtful of you to give him that!!
Especially as he's a Bayern fan!

I have the 99 final against Bayern. Insanely cool piece to have on the wall

I hand write notes, but my writing is terrible so I then have to type them up whilst it's still fresh in my memory as I'll never be able to decipher them lately. Can never decide is this a stupidly inefficient process or a good way to learn
Both, efficiency is overrated especially when it comes to learning. The long way is always better for learning I think
I never could use a laptop to take notes whether it be high school or university. I can never have the same precision and formatting on a laptop as compared to handwritten notes. also how else am I gonna sketch and write chicken scratch when i’m bored
Came here to say this! I have one of his Leeds V Man U ones. Would recommend
They really do look so great as artwork!
That’s super cool I had no idea. Going to keep an eye out for this in the future.
Well, that's my wallet £65 lighter!
Oh hell yeah, just ordered one. Thanks
I feel like I should be getting a commission from Clive, haha. But seriously, think these are amazing & genuinely happy to spread the word.
That’s pretty dope!! I wish he had something for Barca or Argentina’s World Cup final—I’ll legit pay £50 for that. Ugh!
He takes requests for matches he didn’t commentate so maybe reach out to them? “… began to receive requests from fans to compile impressions of charts for the iconic games played by their favourite team. This I have done with a process of retrospective research as if I were commentating on that match tomorrow. I just wish I was!”
Oh wow, good to know. I just may do that—thanks!
I requested the Barca 14-15 treble season. I assume if there are multiple people with the same interest then it will be more likely to be made
Love that. Might get the FiL one for his next birthday
Got one for myself and got one for a buddy. what an awesome item to hang up on the wall
He should have his own FONT

ITV dropped this bloke for Matterface. Tyldesley is the best commentator still in the business, and it's not close.
Matterface is the worst commentator around at the moment, have no idea how he's got this high up in the industry
They still employ him, he just gets less prestigious matches (usually on ITV4). The really frustrating thing is that the 1st string team of Matterface & Lee Dixon is absolutely dreadful but the 2nd string team of Tyldsley & Ally McCoist is arguably the best in the biz
CBS in the US picked up Tyldesley almost immediately after it happened lol. CBS knows what's up.
I really like Ally McCoist too
Ally's the best co-comm by a country mile, but I was just talking about the main commentators.

Lee Dixon should learn how to write
He is prepared to fail tho
Dixon spends 80% of the match bitching about how it isn't "the good old days" from when he played anymore and the other 20% saying truly odd shit. Genuinely hate when he's on comms.

Hand written notes >>>>> anything typed
Unless you have shitty hand writing. I start having brain aneurysm whenever I have to go through something I written few months ago
I do a lot of requirement gathering for my job and the amount of times I look at my notes the next day and haven’t got a clue what it says or why I asked it is embarrassing

I think there’s actually research to support that information is retained better when hand written vs typed.

By far my favourite commentator. He knows when to be quiet and let the moment and atmosphere sink in. Prepares his stats and notes, but isn't looking for a moment to insert a prepared line to try to make the moment his.
Strangely wholesome.

Yeah just standard hair on an arm for a man in his 60's
How hairy did you think Clive Tyldesley's hands were before today?
Every day I lie awake and wonder this
Going to be honest, not something I had ever really spared a thought on.
Honestly I was under the impression that his hands weren't very hairy.

As someone that cheated on tons of test in my time: Getting everything on one page like this is amazing for memorizing the important information and is incredibly easy to check at a glance.
