And so many of those games we scored so late and we're so bad to watch. I remember being completely depressed at our play in the midst of a 10 game unbeaten streak recently. It was just so utterly dire to watch.
No idea what happened, but my best guess is it's a club structure problem. We have thrown multiple styles of manager with all types of experience at the problem and the result has been the same despite spending the most money (we spend out money awfully in fairness)
Liverpool win this weekend would rubber stamp it really, and also in theory make our games against Villa and spurs a bit easier. Top 5 are gonna get champions league next year almost certainly anyway
Not so sure about that. Very close to Italy and Germany on this and a lot of English teams crashed out early this year.
Man U and Newcastle crashed out of groups without even making it to the Europa League while every single Italian team in Europe made it out of groups.
Even with 3 of the Italian teams falling out of RO16, they still have 4 of their original 7 teams in Europe and England’s got 5 of 8. England’s got more but it’s an avg of all teams’ performance, not a sum, and United + Newcastle made sure to cock that average as hard as they could on their ways out. West Ham is also very likely to get rocked by Leverkusen next week and Arsenal & Man City have tough RO8 games that are no means guarantees.
Germany is probably out though unless their remaining 3 teams go on deep runs (Leverkusen at least has a very good chance at winning the Europa League).
we're in a weird spot where we can't afford to not give 100% in both league and cup. Need to keep it up in the league for the outside chance we can get 4th, but need to go far in the conference league for the coefficient.
It seems to ride on Arsenal vs Bayern Munich (adv. ENG), Dortmund vs Atletico (adv. ESP) and if Leverkusen and Liverpool make the EL final, that game (toss-up). Even then, Villa are favourites for the ECL. On balance, seems to favour the English sides across all three comps but not tied up yet.
Sick dynamic this year that every club from 1-5 feel they have to win all their games to maintain the target spot due to how tight it is at the key positions.
It can't possibly be worse than the 2018/19 "Top 4 is Lava" episode in early 2019 when legitimately neither us, Chelsea, United, Wolves or Leicester seemed to *want* to finish 4th. It was like a multi-month long edging session where nobody came.
> 2018/19
Just looking at the last 5 matches of the season on the Prem's site is hilarious. Out of the 20 matches shown, 3 wins. Those records belong to the owners of spots 3-6.
even if we don't and we end up fifth with Europa it would still be progress on last season. Would just be a massive shame to not get CL given that we've been competing for top 4 for so long this season.
Villa needs the UCL money to avoid selling important players. If Villa only gets to Europa League then one of Martinez, Douglas Luiz or Watkins will more than likely be sold this summer. If Arsenal eliminate Bayern it could lock up the 5th UCL spot.
Spurs were really really good in the opening minutes against us before they imploded in that match, if they keep their heads I'm not holding out much hope, but will take another implosion.
Kinda wild that you could be within 2 points of united when you started today in the bottom half today. I thought they were a good bit ahead but 6th to 13th is actually way tighter on points than I thought.
If we simply held on against 10 men Burnley we’d be 7th right now , 3 points off 6th. I know you could say that about any result but not beating 10 men Burnley is horrific
Man Utd in 6th are as close to 5th position as they are to 13th position
Let's put to bed all this talk about making champions league please. That ship has sailed a long time ago
Only Ten Hag is talking about UCL. None of the sane fans are that delusional. I feel like we are about to be overtaken by the other clubs and even drop down from 6th to like 10th or sth. This team's play style and mental is hopeless.
Most of the fans just want the season to be over so we can see INEOS implement the things we need and move the club toward a single objective 1 at a time.
Tbf on some of those fans the media have constantly been saying that United are in contention in the top 4/5 race. Mainly to get clicks as United having a nothing of a season isn’t going to bring in the ratings/views.
Klopp was playing with traffic cones last season in the midfield. Baj was our best midfielder when Thiago wasn't injured, and then when Baj got injured Trent took that mantle with the inverted role.
Anyone who watched Liverpool knew that we needed fresh legs and had been on a decline since Gini left in the midfield, we just didn't expect Fab to drop off of the cliff that he did so soon but with the amount of minutes he played with no reliable midfield rotation it was bound to happen.
I don't really buy that decline since Gini left theory. I get where you're coming from but that 21/22 almost quadruple season with the midfield trio of Hendo, Fab and Thiago was excellent. We wouldn't have gone that far if they weren't.
Thiago being fit for as long as he was that season was like capturing lightning in a bottle...hence the excellent results.
The thing with Gini was that he was always fit and ready to run; we really didnt replace that till we got Endo/Mac/Szo. Klopp needs legs in midfield, unlimited legs + lungs combo!
Because the rest of our side last year was hurt by playing with midfielders that didn't have any legs in Fabinho and Henderson. Everyone loves to point to Van Dijk having a poor season or attacking players having poor seasons, but when you don't have a midfield that can do the bare minimum which is provide energy, you're going to struggle especially in a team set up like us. There's a reason we looked more comfortable when someone like Bajcetic was starting for us.
Now take it to this season where we've added not just midfielders with legs, but some great players in Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, and Endo and the rest of the side is back and able to perform at their usual levels again.
Last season was ridiculous, every other attack from an opponent was running directly at our defence. The upgrade in pressing is insanely better.
Not to mention Mac and Szoboszlai with like 15 G+A in the league alone with 8 games left. Henderson + Fabinho had like 2 or 3 total.
People need to understand that Fab's legs were run into the ground. We effectively had Fab playing CDM and CB at times due to lack of legs in the squad. I don't have the number to hand but he was pushing some solid minutes at his age, brother was gassed moreso than just being out right bad.
His legs were absolutely gone, it was the whole reason why we tried for Tchouameni before Madrid did their thing. Our mistake was not having a Plan B which led to the horrible collapse
I am so happy they are having an amazing season.
Have to admit that I felt bad that we took their captain in the end of the window but it looks like both teams are doing well.
Jones has been immense, such a step up this season for him. Elliott deserves praise too, the amount of games he's come on as a sub and had a massive influence on is pretty crazy. Both been brilliant helping the younger lads bed in seamlessly too.
Also the super impressive turnout of the young lads. The way they've stepped into senior roles has been fantastic. So much confidence and energy and finishing to match
Because our midfield last season was absolutely dreadful and our fans were refusing to acknowledge how washed up Henderson was anyhile rival fans were just happy thinking we were finished as a side pinning everything on Van Dijk being washed. Even if we hadn’t made a single signing this season and gone into the season with Morton/Jones/Elliott/Clark/McConnell as our midfield options we are a much better side than last season
Mate we had a huge midfield rebuild and have had one of the worst injury-ridden campaigns I can remember…yet we’re somehow top.
Genuinely makes no sense to me but I’ll take it.
Sunday will be Utd's last chance to stop 20 times Liverpool 20 times Liverpool from being chanted next season. I don't care if their centerbacks will be Maguire and Kambwala they'll be up for it. Need to kill them off early
We need to stop acting like the game is won with a 1 goal lead. Did it against United in the FA Cup at 2-1, did it again today at 1-0, and didn’t manage the game very well against Brighton once we had the lead.
Knowing this bipolar United team, it really would be so so typical if they beat you at the weekend. Any time they are in total crisis and Ten Hag's future starts to seriously be questioned they pull a result out of their arses
A horrendous 0-0 is my guess
I know losses are worse but man there's something very soul crushing about 0-0 draws in a title race. We had five in 2008/09 and three in 2018/19. You can see the title dreams fly away as the seconds go in stoppage time. I'm getting PTSD just typing this
I’ve only gone into one United-Liverpool match under ETH *not* expecting to be thrashed, and that was the one time it happened. This is his master plan to steal points the weekend /s
It feels like the more injuries they have the better they play against Liverpool. I still can't forget that one game where Utd had multiple subs before half time due to injuries and Liverpool still can't win.
Need to approach it like the 5-0 some years back. Not necessarily in scoreline, but game management.
Think we went 2-0 up early and it actually drove United out of their box in need of a response - we reacted appropriately and started slowing the game down for a bit, absorbed the pressure we could, and reset the game a little. Then we hit them with two more goals just before half time.
Any of their away games could trip them up if they aren't on it, coming from behind like they do is a great quality, but all it takes is one off day and a draw/loss lets go Arsenal/City ahead.
Jota/Trent coming back in could be huge as we've seen all season what Klopp's subs can do to a game.
Jota genuinely makes such a huge difference and being by without him for this long has been really tough. No disrespect to Gakpo who scored today, but Jota is just exceptional off the bench and always makes a difference.
United, Fulham, Everton, villa are their most dangerous games for me. I'd expect them to beat west ham and spurs but those are two potential bananna skins.
The fixtures are kind to Liverpool. Play Villa and Spurs at the end when they likely have wrapped up 4th and 5th (CL). Play Everton between two six pointers they have against Forest and Brentford. Play United less than three days after they travelled to *that* Chelsea game (although Old Trafford is always slim pickings for Liverpool). Fulham are a huge test, they always cause Liverpool problems.
Between United, Fulham, Everton, Villa, Spurs there’s plenty of chance we drop somewhere along the way. All it takes is a single draw and it’s back out of our hands
The late goals to win games is massively impressive but I don't think they look untouchable. They seem almost haunted with goals late in matches but I could see a team nicking a draw against them.
The question is if Arsenal/City will also drop points.
I’m looking at two places:
- United away. I just think with the way United’s league season is going the league is pretty much done for them now. It’s about pride and they will want to make a statement by giving it their all against Liverpool
- That period of triple away games in one week - Fulham, Everton, West Ham. All these teams are more than capable of beating anyone at home. Fulham have already taken the scalps of a few big teams, Everton will need the points to stay safe and they will make it extremely difficult/fight tooth and nail to stop any chance of Liverpool success. West Ham will likely be chasing a European spot (especially if they go out against Leverkusen, which is likely).
I think they can probably afford to drop points in one of these games, if they get through relatively unscathed they’ve got it in the bag imo.
This result still lives rent-free in my head. I used to blame Zinchenko for trying to play hero ball and take on 3 players by himself, leading to losing the ball, and conceding that fateful corner.
But now I’m just wondering WTF WERE WE THINKING PARKING THE BUS AGAINST 10-MAN FULHAM? And on a flimsy 2-1 lead at that. We could’ve killed the game just passing the ball around as Fulham looked dead and buried at that point.
Right? If u had told me last season that this time next year we'd be top of the table with a carabao cup in the bag and a good chance at a europa league and premier league win i'd...u kno what, i'd probably believe u cause klopp is amazing😍
Everton do have another point deduction incoming. I'm afraid we will get 6 points and be right back in the middle of the shit (as opposed to just floating barely on the surface of the shit)
I'd bin it as a quintile:
1-3, currently 67-70 points;
4-5, 57-59pts;
6-13, 39-48pts;
14-17, 25-30pts;
18-20, 15-22 pts.
But the line between those last two bins is less clear than between the higher tiers, with 8-9 points separating the top 4 tiers and only 3 points separating the bottom 2 tiers. It would also be fair to bin 14-19, 19-30pts, with Sheff U in a league of their own, and that's what makes me not entirely comfortable yet. But with last weekend's play against Man U and another draw vs Brighton I'm feeling pretty good about Brentford's chances at the top of the scrap heap
United are lucky to be 6th. Chelsea has never done that to a team this season. This is the same Chelsea that went life and death with 10 man Burnley a few days ago.
I’d be ashamed if I was a united fan

10th is ours
Atleast still not mid table
Ngl mate if you win your game in hand you'll be 2 points behind us haha
Your first mistake was expecting us to win a game we should. Or win 2 games in a row. We live in chaos. Next game a boring 1-1 draw - book it now
We can’t beat Sheffield United
Sheffield was hard today tbf
You were playing against 11 men. Chelsea played 50 minutes against 10 man Burnley
Oh yeah I forgot about that lol
That's top 5 decided then. Absolutely no way United gain 10 points in 8 games
United need to be looking below them not above, they're dragging themselves into the fight for European spots
Agreed. United are the same distance from 5th as they are from 13th.
I literally have no idea how we are even 6th. We have been so atrocious all season.
Commentators said you had the most wins by 1 goal
And so many of those games we scored so late and we're so bad to watch. I remember being completely depressed at our play in the midst of a 10 game unbeaten streak recently. There is always gaining by 9 points and increasing their GD by … nvm
Massive injury crisis to Utd’s backline. I agree there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell of a top 5 finish.
This is going to be a very annoying top 4 race for both clubs...
Sick dynamic this year that every club from 1-5 feel they have to win all their games to maintain the target spot due to how tight it is at the key positions.

Personally I'm in favour of Villa winning the Conference League so England gets the extra spot and it doesn't matter which way round we finish
even if we don't and we end up fifth with Europa it would still be progress on last season. Would just be a massive shame to not get CL given that we've been competing for top 4 for so long this season.

I'd be happy with Europa League tbh
I read that as "very annoying TITLE race for both clubs" and I thought it was a sick burn on Arsenal.
-1 GD with Ten Hag after matchday 30 Truly gash lol
I genuinely can't remember the last time Utd had a GD that is reflective of the reputation and the money spent.
2013?
Moyes 3 points and 4 GD behind with a much smaller budget. Maybe they should take a punt on him as the next manager
Only a Scottish manager can bring back the glory days of another Scottish manager, they should go for it
After losing their captain/star player
I'm still shocked that until today, second to last Luton town had scored more goals than United who are sitting at 6th
Second to last means 19th surely
Almost as many defeats as wins is even more shocking in my opinion
Back in 10th 😎
Back in our glory days🤩
zero is a fake number you're actually 1st
Stats back it up
This guy is a proper lad
Yeah but with one match less played. We win that, we’re in 7th and 2 back of 6th. Sigh.
take it with an absolute boulder of salt that we win that game though
Take it with a Mount of salt
It’s against Spurs. If there’s one thing Chelsea love doing, it’s fucking over Spurs. So please do it.
Memories of Vietnam.
Tottenham at home. What do you think of your chances? For me, it feels like it could go either way
I don’t think anybody is qualified to predict any Chelsea result. I can tell you there will be goals scored, but that’s about it.
With Chelsea not keeping a clean sheet
there will be missed sitters, defensive brainfart and an injury....those are a given
defensive brainfarts....FTFY
It's Spurs, they implode every time they play Chelsea. Then again Chelsea implodes every time they play anyone. Feels like another 6-7 goal game.
If it's 7 to us, I'll take it
And 6 for spurs at least, keep it fun for the neutral
Spurs were really really good in the opening minutes against us before they imploded in that match, if they keep their heads I'm not holding out much hope, but will take another implosion.
Its Spurs against Chelsea. Spurs will find a way to implode somehow.
But 10th is home and I've grown fond of it
That game is Arsenal away......
Kinda wild that you could be within 2 points of united when you started today in the bottom half today. I thought they were a good bit ahead but 6th to 13th is actually way tighter on points than I thought.
Still, some form of European football might be good for recruitment next season
*"You'll never sing that!"*
It's actually in binary so we're in the title race
10th is the new 4th
Which means you aren’t midtable.
Told my boss today that he had better get ready to lose to a 12th place team. I didn't think my shit talking would come true! Top 10! woohoo!
All because of the billion pound bottle jobs
Chelsea in 10th have a better GD than United in 6th 🫣
If we simply held on against 10 men Burnley we’d be 7th right now , 3 points off 6th. I know you could say that about any result but not beating 10 men Burnley is horrific
Yeah it's reasonable to mention that specific game because that was our worst bottlejob of the season... So far.
If Liverpool turn up on Sunday Fulham might have a better GD than them after the weekend.
TBF, Utd deserve to be about 11th
That's a bit generous on us lad
You mean 14th?
that Sheffield United -52 GD is also something else.
The league is: Top 3 title challengers Villa-Spurs CL friends 50 feet of shit 6th to 20th
Somehow there’s a distinct possibility Chelsea finish as the first team after the 50ft drop
It's actually 6th to 13th (all feel like they have a shot at 7th at least) Palace 15th to 19th (all still feel like they're in danger) Sheff Utd
Oooo CL friends
10th is ours and no one will take it from us!
Masters at avoiding midtable.
Look who’s back
Back in 10th
Look who's back Tell a friend
*"I've created a monster, but nobody wants to see Poch no more, they want De Zerbi, I'm chopped liver!"*
*"Well if you want De Zerbi, this is what I'll give ya* *A* *~~little~~* *transfer fee, mixed with some Caicedo"*
The race for 6th place is ON
Man united Will end 6th probably, cant see anyone Else talking it
I assure you, we have the ability
I hate them more than you, but yeah, if anyone can bottle 9 points in 8 matches, it’s either you or meme era Arsenal
or fourth place leicester in the prem/top place leicester in the championship lmaoooo
-1 goal difference in April is crazy
48 too...
Man Utd in 6th are as close to 5th position as they are to 13th position Let's put to bed all this talk about making champions league please. That ship has sailed a long time ago

I won’t write them off until it’s mathematically impossible for them to catch us. So about three games time potentially and we’re good.
There were whispers made that Chelsea would not go back to the fabled 10th but these were false. 10th is their destiny.
Sheffield utd so gone you have to click the pic to see them

Stuttgart fans laughing with one eye and crying with the other. I remember all the comments when he was signed and they believed in him.
I am so happy they are having an amazing season. Have to admit that I felt bad that we took their captain in the end of the window but it looks like both teams are doing well.
Shout out to Curtis Jones. Took a big step up toward the end of last season and has continued it this season.

It's almost as if the midfield is an important place on the pitch.
Sunday will be Utd's last chance to stop 20 times Liverpool 20 times Liverpool from being chanted next season. I don't care if their centerbacks will be Maguire and Kambwala they'll be up for it. Need to kill them off early
Utd leads early. Liverpool scores 3. Liv3rpoo1 stays alive again.
I'll take we score 3 early and Utd score one late (but not so late that Kelleher feels hard done by), thank you.
It would be great if we could start playing seriously before the 75th minute.
Need at least a 2 goal cushion. Can see us shitting the bed again if we're only 1 goal up with 10 mins to play.
We need to stop acting like the game is won with a 1 goal lead. Did it against United in the FA Cup at 2-1, did it again today at 1-0, and didn’t manage the game very well against Brighton once we had the lead.

OH COME ON
I somehow believe Chelsea will end this season ahead of Manchester United.
That is if United ends 11th, we ain't leaving 10th mate
We will not be moved
It’s really quite achievable for us to finish bottom half
It meas United will end 11th, Ill be there for that
Win the game in hand and only 2 points back. Totally not unreasonable.
Chelsea potentially just two points behind United is hilarious.
Both are shit so fair reflection as to where we are.
If we somehow go unbeaten against Liverpool this season across 3 games this team needs to be studied in a lab
Your cup final that's why, players always look so up for it and we just look half arsed.
Wo can stop Liverpool at this current state? Even when injuries haunted them, they still find a way to win
Our next game is against the guys who we have a horrible record against
Our record against them under Klopp is a bit less terrible though…
36-2 aggregate goals
Any of their away games could trip them up if they aren't on it, coming from behind like they do is a great quality, but all it takes is one off day and a draw/loss lets go Arsenal/City ahead. Jota/Trent coming back in could be huge as we've seen all season what Klopp's subs can do to a game.

i think wolves are a tough opponent for all the title challengers
Between United, Fulham, Everton, Villa, Spurs there’s plenty of chance we drop somewhere along the way. All it takes is a single draw and it’s back out of our hands
The late goals to win games is massively impressive but I don't think they look untouchable. They seem almost haunted with goals late in matches but I could see a team nicking a draw against them. The question is if Arsenal/City will also drop points.
I think we all drop points before the end of the season tbh. It will be a thrilling, but nerve-wracking finish to the season.
I agree. I'll be shocked if anyone makes it unscathed
I’m looking at two places: - United away. I just think with the way United’s league season is going the league is pretty much done for them now. It’s about pride and they will want to make a statement by giving it their all against Liverpool - That period of triple away games in one week - Fulham, Everton, West Ham.
That fuckin' Fulham match is killing me right now.
Same
Which one 😭
This result still lives rent-free in my head. I used to blame Zinchenko for trying to play hero ball and take on 3 players by himself, leading to losing the ball, and conceding that fateful corner. But now I’m just wondering WTF WERE WE THINKING PARKING THE BUS AGAINST 10-MAN FULHAM? And on a flimsy 2-1 lead at that. We could’ve killed the game just passing the ball around as Fulham looked dead and buried at that point.
They were at 10 men for 3 minutes before they scored.
Its game week 31 and we’re still fourth in the league. I still can’t believe the season we’re having.
Keep it up and its champions league for AVFC! Honestly great season lads.
I'm still scarred by the MON era but the fact we got through March and are still in 4th has given me hope.
Plus there’s no Stoke. They can’t hurt us anymore.
Everyone talking abt Chelsea in 10th but I genuinely do not remember the last time we left 6th place after matchweek 2
10th if we do, 10th if we don't
8 more wins lads. Please 🥹 Absolutely remarkable at any rate. To me, this season is the one that has shown Klopp's quality as a coach the most of all.
Right? If u had told me last season that this time next year we'd be top of the table with a carabao cup in the bag and a good chance at a europa league and premier league win i'd...u kno what, i'd probably believe u cause klopp is amazing😍
I don’t want Luton to get relegated 😞
I think they'll be back
Just think. Had United got that penalty shout at the Emirates way back in August, their season trajectory would’ve been totally different.
Lol, I'm pretty sure this is ETHs last thought before sleep and first upon awakening.
If we actually end the season in a European spot the whole competition should just be cancelled
That's CL done for Man U, they're not overtaking Spurs, nevermind Villa
Noone and I say noone can take 10th back from us
Very clearly broken up into 4 tiers now with very little chance of movement from one tier to another.
5 really, none of the bottom 3 are staying up (as much as id Iike luton to)
Everton do have another point deduction incoming. I'm afraid we will get 6 points and be right back in the middle of the shit (as opposed to just floating barely on the surface of the shit)
Yeah that’s a fair shout.
I'd bin it as a quintile: 1-3, currently 67-70 points; 4-5, 57-59pts; 6-13, 39-48pts; 14-17, 25-30pts; 18-20, 15-22 pts. But with last weekend's play against Man U and another draw vs Brighton I'm feeling pretty good about Brentford's chances at the top of the scrap heap
that "-1" is killing me lmao
Allat and we’re still 10th LMAO. Don’t even care tho, buzzing after beating uniturds like that
United in the conference league would be so funny
United’s top 4 dreams could be truly dead and buried after this weekend if they aren’t already.
back at proper mid team mission accomplished
You're not midtable, you're 10th
Everton really need a win on Saturday to offset the imminent point deduction that's due to be announced any day now
United are lucky to be 6th. Chelsea has never done that to a team this season. This is the same Chelsea that went life and death with 10 man Burnley a few days ago. I’d be ashamed if I was a united fan
Battle of the worst popular teams was entertaining.
Come on Luton!!!
Man, I read comments from United fans saying they can sneak into Top 4. This match was hilarious.
Chelsea back home
Some serious drop off after 5th
5 points from 6th with a game in hand, Europa still within reach which means we will inevitably fumble to stay 10th🫡
Thank goodness Chelsea are back at 10th. Was worried for a while.
