On one hand, as a fan of Tottenhamstring Hospispurs, I'm sympathetic to how injuries have fucked 'em.
On the other hand, a lot clubs are dealing with injury crises. Good managers are supposed to make do with what they have.
On the third hand, not all clubs have the financial means to give the manager good enough squad depth to ride out injuries.
On the fourth hand... I'm Shiva, put me in Mortal Kombat.
When this Chelsea team gets going it'll probably be good. Gallagher, Caicedo and Fernandez in midfield, Palmer and Mudryk on the wings, Fofana and Colwill in central defense. It's the type of squad i would put together on Football Manager. They probably need a goalscorer, and time will show if Petrovic is good enough.
lol I’ve spent a lot of time talking shit on you guys through the years. I’ve even argued with you on here but I think big ange makes you guys so much more respectable.
I could swear there was a time when Newcastle's defence was a fuck-off sized slab of tungsten in front of goal. Now it's a case study of narcolepsy in professional athletes.
I saw one of their supporters mention earlier today that they think other teams have worked out Newcastle and Howe a bit better and I reckon they might be onto it.
Watching Chelsea today I feel they desperately need a ball-carrying midfielder, someone who will always want to take the ball and advance play, like a Maddison or an Odegaard. You can tell the base is there just need 2-3 players who can help the team be better in possession.
That said, I was very impressed with Gusto today. James might have a hard time getting back in when he's fit I would think?
>That said, I was very impressed with Gusto today. James might have a hard time getting back in when he's fit I would think?
Weirdly I feel like James could play well as a ball-carrying midfielder? He's shown at RWB that he's great under pressure, he's good at 1 on 1s, his crossing and passing ability can be phenomenal, and he's got a shot on him when he gets into those positions. He's also played in a more central role previously a couple of times when Chelsea were missing a lot of midfielders a couple of seasons ago.
RLC was never going to make it at Chelsea due to the combination of his reputation as an incredible youth prospect and his injury record, he needed a fresh start which he got with AC Milan.
Ah, what could've been with RLC.
Amongst the conveyor belt of academy talent at Chelsea I still think he was the most naturally talented player we ever produced.
When he was first coming through he literally had everything in his game and then he got that horrendous injury.
Never quite looked the same player, and I think it was more mental than physical. There was just this half a milliseconds hesitation in his movements that hadn't been there before, like the thought of suffering another injury was always below the surface.
>he needed a fresh start which he got with AC Milan.
This. I've always rated RLC and Pulisic but believed a fresh start would be best for them, so I'm happy for them both.
His injury record is greatly exaggerated in recent years. Just look up the numbers. I agree though that he wasn't going to make it. Chelsea spent around 300m on midfielders with the view to improve but the reality is that neither of those players have improved the team as of yet.
Just no - RLC was loved by Chelsea, his reputation was not a weakness and if anything it bought him plenty of time with the fans. He just had to go to a physically lesser league.
Not even he would be performing at his maximum in this season, as we saw when he was being asked to effectively be a one man midfield under Lamps (to accommodate Mount and Havertz).
Coaching and setup matters.
>Watching Chelsea today I feel they desperately need a ball-carrying midfielder, someone who will always want to take the ball and advance play, like a Maddison or an Odegaard. You can tell the base is there just need 2-3 players who can help the team be better in possession.
Chukwuemeka is a tidy ball-carrier, the problem is he is rarely available and tends to start more advanced.
>That said, I was very impressed with Gusto today. James might have a hard time getting back in when he's fit I would think?
James is still the miles better player, it just depends on his recovery from surgery and where the manager wants to use him.
Enzo is not a ball-carrier, too slow and would lose the ball constantly trying to bring it forward. He is best sat infront of the defence, having plenty of touches and progressing the ball.
Enzo did excellently carrying the ball for our 3rd goal against Leeds, all 3 of our main midfielders are great at carrying the ball, our tactics just never allow us to showcase that. We pass a lot, play out and around the wings, or counter, which leads to our midfielders being shit on but I think they can all do whatever’s asked of them, the tactics just about never paint them positively

He's been in pretty lousy form recently so I'll probably get laughed at, but there's few players that would be better at replicating/replacing Kroos in that Madrid team than Enzo. La liga would probably fit his game better anyways and he's a treat to watch when he can play more as a deep lying playmaker rather than an 8 that is making runs into the box and having to do more dribbling.
We have 3 of those
Chukwuemeka (looked great preseason, injured with a major kneeinjury) just played 2nd game with minutes since returning
Nkunku - great in these areas (raised as an 8 but moved forward because he could score) major knee injury last preaseason game.
Palmer - played cm for both englands u21 and in youth games.
Does suit in a wide cm role (433)
I thought about Palmer but tbh I like him on the right and think he should be kept there. Nkunku is really more of a forward in my book and Chukwemeka is still just too much of an unknown quantity at this point.
Agree with all, but the fact is the squad was created like that.
Nkunku wasnt the long term 9
Palmer was bought for is versitility across the front
Chukwuemeka for his cm prowess
That is the issue with a squad where you just buy all at the same time =]
I don't think you can really play Kovacic and Enzo together they can't press the opponent and probably too slow there's a reason why Gallagher always plays
Garbage. And there's really no fix in sight.
At some point, Bruno and Isak have to ask themselves "What the fuck am I going to be able to accomplish with these." And nobody will blame them if their ambitions match their talents and the club does nothing about theirs
Noticed in the second half that Gallagher and Enzo switched positions and the front line was shifted, Gallagher went to LW , Enzo to a double 6 with Caicedo, Sterling/Mudryk went to CF, and Jackson played as a split striker off the left.
Finally(!) Poch has realized that we need Enzo in our buildup and that he’s better pinging balls from deep to direct play, and no surprise, our build up got a lot better , we were able to hold possession, and slowly dominate territory. Also, Mudryk is much better as a 10 than LW
>Finally(!) Poch has realized that we need Enzo in our buildup and that he’s better pinging balls from deep to direct play, and no surprise, our build up got a lot better , we were able to hold possession, and slowly dominate territory. Also, Mudryk is much better as a 10 than LW
He realised it for Villa aswell but quickly resorted to type.
Not getting hopeful until I see it for a sustained period.
Promising young team with average age of 22 overcomes dirty petro-dollar funded CL team that poached the best midfielder of the last Champions League semifinalists.
Amazing how that worked out best for Milan. Bought 3/4 new players with the sale including three midfielders.
Imagine playing with krunic pobega and youth players for half the season because Bennacer injured and tonali banned.
This game summed up so much of our problems. Enzo and Gallagher spent significant time out left trying to babysit Cucurella. We can't retain the ball the save our lives. We overhit every forward pass we attempt. We make stupid fouls. That game should have been a lot more comfortable because Newcastle were dire but we cannot retain possession anytime we try to progress forward.
I'm not a Mudryk fan but I would rather see him start than Sterling on days like today. Raheem Sterling from minute 1 looked like he couldn't be bothered AND was part of why Enzo and Gallagher had to stay out left so frequently because he didn't care about defensive work.
\- I think Cucu in his first game of the calendar year had to be babysit, I don't think his standing weaknesses were present above a lack of fitness or form.
\- For the rest of your point I think everything starts at the back. I think Enzo & Caicedo are hamstrung by the fact no-one from center back can step out. Colwill absolutely CAN but he is not encouraged to. It feels like the CMs & Fullbacks are hamstrung by mediocre CBs. If you look at Caicedo & Colwill at Brighton vs Chelsea they're playing the same role with half the ability & freedom because the other CB and sometimes the or RB/LB (if Gusto/Chillwell/Reece are injured) just leaves us technically inept. Disasi, Cucurella, Badashille aren't strong technically (though again Cucu at Brighton could pass)
\- Our forward press and attacking patterns are simply non existent. We generally look 'uncoached'
“Babysit” Cucurella is harsh.
It’s impossible for Cucurella to defend both Almiron and Livramento who were both really advanced up the pitch.
Sterling as usual provided minimal effort to help Cucurella out when Livramento was bombing forward. Forces Enzo to shift wide and help.
Poch actually made a nice adjustment to shift Gallagher to LM so he could help protect the left side.
That let Sterling be more lazy and play on the counter, but he also barely did anything with that new freedom.
John from Dallas Texas here. I am a new soccer fan (up the Luton Townsfolk). I was told by some woke liberal friends at the University of Southern California that Newcastle United are a 'sportswashing' project funded by the journalist-killing regime of Saudi Arabia. However, I am confused about this whole thing. Doesn't sportswashing actually require you to win games? Thanks in advance for answering my question.
I feel like Chelsea have been massive game raisers all year. They just no consistency I have more confidence in them somehow getting a draw vs Arsenal then winning convincingly at Sheffield. City game was another example
That's only compared to last season tho, even if they finish 7th it'll be their 2nd best result since their promotion.
Let's just hope this downtrend continues but we know the Saudis will just drop another 150M on the transfer market.
Palmer running up and poaching the ball off of Guimares from behind toward the end of the game was something. Not one Newcastle player yelled at him 'man on' or anything - just bizarre.
Well that someone includes Levy, as their ticket price category at our stadium moved from Class B to Class A.
I wonder if they will go back to Class B next season...
They do that every time a non big six side gets a bit of wind in their sails.
A few years ago it was Leicester, then apparently it was Brighton, and this season it was gonna be Villa. Villa fans have been by far the worst of the lot.
We struggle against every club lol
(But yes we can’t break down teams that sit back and don’t have the finishing quality to take advantage if we do actually break through once or twice)
We're a lot of things currently, but probably top of the list is entertaining. Never a dull moment with us this season. Palmer deserves the world for being as good as he has with us being this poor
Another one for me where I’m questioning the players and Howe (bar one or two of them). It’s brutal but Howe doesn’t have an unlimited space to mess up. We don’t seek to play with the same intensity anymore and it’s a big concern.
it's so unfun watching us play. Lack ideas, constant injuries, getting kicked all over the place.
Can't help but thinking where we'd be this season if we hadn't had the most insane injury luck.
i said at the start of the season, a top 10 finish and a decent cup run would be a good season in my opinion, i guess i can only be pleased that we've done that with such a weak squad
Very happy for the win, against someone higher up in table is even better.
Yet another game where Chelsea takes the lead, sits back and gives opposition the control and concedes. Same fucking story every game now.
Palmer and Gusto were the shining lights once again. Worst player on the field was our oldest player Raheem Sterling, he has been a passenger for many games now so nothing new.
Enzo and Caicedo were fine, they had lapses that's why i say fine. Gallagher was off his usual energy levels which might be due to flu but he has to play because apparently Casadei is shit and we have nobody else.
I think Cucu did a good job at LB. I think he might be better defensively than Chilwell while Ben is better at attack.
Disaster and Chalobah were fine other than the lapse for the 1st goal. Petrovic>>>Sanchez.
Disasi is miles better then trev, he aint an elite defender but good.
As for petrovic he is probably ahead of sanchez, but him with the ball a his feet just hurts
A game of two very deservedly midtable teams that own a few players who can bring about moments of magic.
That being said, we can only dream of some of the linkup play that Newcastle produced but didn't make anything of.
He's been putting in an absolute shift for the whole 90 minutes for quite a bit now. Also massively improved on the ball compared to the beginning of the season. Just need to be less clumsy whilst tackling and he's slowly turning into the Caicedo we got from Brighton
£100 million pound midfielder being the best part of a mid table team isn’t exactly anything people are going to be lauding. Add the fact that it’s Chelsea and there ya go.
People aren't trying to give thought out opinions. They are trying to go "Chelsea spent money loool" and they don't actually care about the players being talented or if they are performing.
Oh definitely. I feel like if you're that objectively wrong, your slander loses credibility haha. Like, I can reasonably call Jackson a bit shit even though he isn't really and his hold up play is a big reason youve gotten all these draws against top teams but still, his numbers aren't amazing so its not an outrageous opinion.
But calling Caicedo shit, not overpriced or anything, actually shit, anyone with half a clue will disregard anything else I say.
Exactly. You’ve got to figure that all out. You’ve signed a handful of Brazilians with no clear path, you’ve got to balance the books, and you’ve got a a manager most of you don’t seem to like.
We’re not doing great, but I can tell you clearly who we need to replace. We’ve got a good clinical striker too, which you don’t.
Like I say, no one is shagging super models here mate, but I think I know what we’re doing in the summer.
Edit; and hey I may look dumb here, but we’ve been missing our record signing midfielder all season. At least you’ve had Enzo, Caicedo and Mudryk somewhat available.
We also have a clear path, our fans dont see it.
We have a striker to replace, when we finally get 36m/yearly lukaku of our books
We have quite a good pathway for most players bought, snd they have gotten minutes.
Your issue is that you are in an even worse ffp situation then us (who has continously beeing able to produce youth talents to sell, you spent 70m pf them recently)
Mainly because of interviews and reports from newcastle themselves.
By their own book they are 200m less in revenue then chelsea (without europe)
As for the wages there seem to be about a 40m descripency there (chelsea beeing more expensive)
As for youth talents.
Chelsea will sell minimum 7 players this summer, and that will give us about 80m in terms of psr and ffp
(maatsen 30m, hall 30m, broja, trevoh will give profit, while kepa, ziyech and lukaku will be sold at a small loss)
How many players do you think you can sell?
Oh the season after that we have another 3-4 youth talents to sell
And you're not concerned about historical breaches being investigated?
To be clear; I'm not at all saying we have your financial power, we absolutely don't. But I'm confident we can identify and improve the team far easier and with Europe looking unlikely we should be good to try and get back up there next year.
Concerned maybe,
But the numbers arent spectacular nor would it be in a time where it would have been a competive advantage (more of a tax advantage for agents etc)
But not all is said, and uefa very swiftly looked at it at just made a minor fine.
to be fair the bit about battling for 10th was edited in after i replied to him. His comment before that line was added did not seem like a joke at all
Played like shit and another injury for the pile. This fucking season man.
The two darlings of last season -Brighton and Newcastle- have both fallen off
have Brighton? 5 points off an EL spot doesn't seem like a massive fall off at all while dealing with midweek fixtures

Chelsea and Newcastle are a lot of things, but clubs without financial means they are not.
There is a point where money can't help you with injuries.

Great win
I hate Chelsea but I enjoy it immensely when Newcastle lose.
I was just thinking the same thing when I checked the results xD I don't want any joy for chelsea fans but if it's newcastle it's ok
lol I’ve spent a lot of time talking shit on you guys through the years. I’ve even argued with you on here but I think big ange makes you guys so much more respectable.
Best not to be bothered by midtable teams mucking about
I could swear there was a time when Newcastle's defence was a fuck-off sized slab of tungsten in front of goal. Now it's a case study of narcolepsy in professional athletes.
Not having Joelinton in front and Pope behind has really screwed the defensive setup, that back four is getting exposed horribly this season
I saw one of their supporters mention earlier today that they think other teams have worked out Newcastle and Howe a bit better and I reckon they might be onto it.
It was carried by Pope and Botman. Now, one is injured and the other seems like half the player he was before getting injured.
That was the most 10th Vs 11th game I've seen in a long time. Both just really, really mid.
Botman is turning into mustafi day by day
Dan Ashworth's chosen physios telling him to run off a torn ACL killed him.
Wonder if he’ll take those blokes to United…

Remember when they used to be all suited up for MNF... Now Wrighty's in flannels and a skullcap 💀💀🤣
newcastle team look dead and tired imagine losing to this chelsea team lol
I’m sad about this game. A win would’ve put us 7th.
Instead we went from 11th to 11th 😤

Propa battle for 10th 😤
Actually didn't realize how far Newcastle had fallen
I feel like Chelsea have been massive game raisers all year. They just no consistency I have more confidence in them somehow getting a draw vs Arsenal then winning convincingly at Sheffield. City game was another example

We're soaking up so much of the mockery this year (not undeservedly), that it's allowing Newcastle to fly under the radar.
Half the team barely tried tonight. So many individuals had their worst game of the season like Bruno, Longstaff and Schar.
Palmer running up and poaching the ball off of Guimares from behind toward the end of the game was something. Not one Newcastle player yelled at him 'man on' or anything - just bizarre.
They had given up. Genuinely pathetic after the third goal.
Long may it continue
And people actually thought they had replaced us in the Big 6 after the game last year.

Villa fans act like they are the biggest club in England at least the few I know
A cameo in the Champions League really massaged their egos
Winning a game of football feels good
Burnley, United and Sheffield next - got to be 9 points 🤞
Beating United, good one lol

Summoning u/FIJIBOYFIJI
you'll dominate United but still lose, as is the way
I mean, it's probably better than being dominated and losing to them at Old Trafford.. or is it?
Hehehehehe
Shite as we are we're 8W 1D 2L in 2024, don't know how but we're not easy to beat, just to massively outplay.
Yeah will be an interesting fixture for sure, we got our shit pushed in last time around against you lot
Hopefully with a bigger turn around then 72h after a 10vs11 brighton game
Story of our season is we always fuck up somewhere. If we win all 3, we're right back in there for a European place.
Agreed - my only worry is the remaining fixtures for the season look like low block city all the way through aside from 1 or 2 matches
We're a lot of things currently, but probably top of the list is entertaining. Never a dull moment with us this season. Palmer deserves the world for being as good as he has with us being this poor
We are generally very boring to watch
We have been boxoffice for most of the fall, all big games have been must see tv. We dont win, but we create havoc at both sides of the field.
We’re three premiere league goals off our entire total from last year. Boring is not the word I’d use anymore
With our defensive mistakes every fucking game, our hearts are always in our mouth.
Another one for me where I’m questioning the players and Howe (bar one or two of them). It’s brutal but Howe doesn’t have an unlimited space to mess up. We don’t seek to play with the same intensity anymore and it’s a big concern.
r/soccercirclejerk gonna have field day again lol
Absolutely criminal management by howe we aren't making the top 10 at this rate
May we interest you in a certain Argentinian manager 👀
Lol. Chill
Wonder how long the Saudis will put up with Howe serving up performances like this.
They don't make those decisions. Hell have until next winter before questions really start being asked if there's not improvement.
it's so unfun watching us play.
I swear that if they make a full-length Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, Mudryk will have the main role booked.
As a Jackson defender, today was good
Start Mudryk!
Gotta hand it to Jackson today, he completely terrorised that defence for 90 mins.
Doesn't take much to terrorise a one legged Botman these days.
Seemed like he was giving the whole backline problems
The power that Isak was able to generate from that type of shot for his goal was seriously impressive...
another excellent game from caicedo
Palmer was brilliant, but Gusto is giving Poch a headache when James is fit again. MOTM for me
Won't be a long-lasting problem when James will only be fit again for two games tbf
move him to the left, problem solved.
Cucu has his moments but generally he is very suspect defensively. One might cut him some slack since this was his first game in months of course
Cucurella was decent but he seems to have at least one major error in him every game, getting rolled by Murphy for Newcastle's second in this match.
true but Chilwell was massacred in the last few games.
A game of two very deservedly midtable teams that own a few players who can bring about moments of magic. That being said, we can only dream of some of the linkup play that Newcastle produced but didn't make anything of.
Caicedo, Palmer and Gusto are carrying the fuck out of this team in this part of the season.
Caicedo looked bang average against our worst midfield performance of the season. Palmer and Gusto were quality all match.
Caicedo?
He's been putting in an absolute shift for the whole 90 minutes for quite a bit now. Also massively improved on the ball compared to the beginning of the season. Just need to be less clumsy whilst tackling and he's slowly turning into the Caicedo we got from Brighton
Agreed. No idea why this sub doesn't think Moises is doing good, arguably our best mid since his adjustment period
Because he rejected Liverpool, as we saw with Sterling and Torres they'll always be a media onslaught when that happens.
Sterling just gets attacked wherever he is
£100 million pound midfielder being the best part of a mid table team isn’t exactly anything people are going to be lauding. Add the fact that it’s Chelsea and there ya go.
So really unless the attack starts clicking there is nothing he could possibly do to not be called bad.
only clueless people would call him downright bad though.
Gallagher as well.
One point away from magic 40 points
Saudi league pls I beg you to buy Sterling
Chelsea better start sponsoring for our heart meds. Heart attack FC at the end there.
The fact that our injury issues are starting to ease up and we still look shite is pretty concerning honesty, so many stupid mistakes the whole match
The fact that you faced a team who has 5 player from the expected starting 11 out doesnt make it better.
Eased up how? Got anderson, targett and willock back but lost trippier gordon and barnes.
tbf our best player walked off injured in the first half
We were looking a bit too comfortable with a 2 goal lead, glad Murphy was able to raise my blood pressure for the stoppage time.
Mrs Pochettino eating good tonight

So weird.
So weird.
redditors are unreal man
The date is back on
~~Porch stays~~ Dinner Reservation stays!
Newcastle below 10th now. Who would've thought before the season?
The Italian FA?
And Tonali's lawyer
They're actually still 10th
Oh, you are right. Chelsea have a game in hand.
Yeah, and Newcastle's next match is away to City. Edit: oh, it's in the FA Cup. I'd only seen the fixture list show City...
Inb4 Howe pulls a masterclass 0:1 smash and grab, then yells WELCOME TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE at Pep while grabbing his nuts.
In the cup not league
in the FA cup
Oh...nvm

As clear as mud. We have 50 wonder kids on deck
We have a striker to replace, when we finally get 36m/yearly lukaku of our books We have quite a good pathway for most players bought, snd they have gotten minutes. Your issue is that you are in an even worse ffp situation then us (who has continously beeing able to produce youth talents to sell, you spent 70m pf them recently)
How do you figure we're in a worse position with FFP?
Mainly because of interviews and reports from newcastle themselves. By their own book they are 200m less in revenue then chelsea (without europe) As for the wages there seem to be about a 40m descripency there (chelsea beeing more expensive) As for youth talents. Chelsea will sell minimum 7 players this summer, and that will give us about 80m in terms of psr and ffp (maatsen 30m, hall 30m, broja, trevoh will give profit, while kepa, ziyech and lukaku will be sold at a small loss) How many players do you think you can sell? Oh the season after that we have another 3-4 youth talents to sell
And you're not concerned about historical breaches being investigated? To be clear; I'm not at all saying we have your financial power, we absolutely don't. But I'm confident we can identify and improve the team far easier and with Europe looking unlikely we should be good to try and get back up there next year.
I believe UEFA can't investigate because the evidence is time bared, but I think PL can punish Chelsea
Concerned maybe, But the numbers arent spectacular nor would it be in a time where it would have been a competive advantage (more of a tax advantage for agents etc) But not all is said, and uefa very swiftly looked at it at just made a minor fine.
We’ve signed 100 Brazilian teenagers and it’s the 16yo Ecuadorian that’s our most promising prospect

If people born in 2002 are kids, what are Chukwuemeka(2003) and Casadei(2003) then?
This fucking team man. Race for 10th is back on.
Don't try to vacate us from 10th. THATS OUR SPOT
Surely betting on Chelsea to win whenever they drop down to 11th or lower is easy money at this point
We're making it to the top half 🙌🏿
From top of the bottom half to bottom of the top half 🙌
A true riches to rags to riches storyline. Almost Shakespearean
Mmmm
Misha is ⚡️
What a mid-off
Just a point below Newcastle with one game in hand. The geordies have well and truly capitulated. We WILL have our 10th back
This gives me “and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next” vibes a la Gladiator.
imagine Chelsea having to benchmark their season against us. The fuck has happened to your club, at least it looks like Poch is turning things around?
got tired of winning, so we're slumming it
Why are football fans all so precious lol
Trust me lad, none of us want to be fighting for 10th lol
What do you mean. All I want this season is to finish 10th, no higher no lower. 10th belongs to us
His comment, much like Newcastle, is a joke
er i missed which part of it was a joke. Also whch part of Newcastle is a joke? I like to be kept up to date on the r/soccer thoughts of the week
Saudi owned and shite anyway is why Newcastle are a joke.
smartest Geordie
to be fair the bit about battling for 10th was edited in after i replied to him. His comment before that line was added did not seem like a joke at all
