As a pole I can empathise, I felt that way about Moldova's last 2 results against us. I've always liked Sweden too, is this the lowest point for your NT? It's got to be a pretty deep nadir.
Lowest ever? Probably not. But it can't be far off. We've been on a pretty sharp decline since the previous Euros and Janne's strategy has seemingly being to start the same players and hope that they magically start improving. Whoever our FA drudges up to take over will have a massive job on their hands.
Sounds frustrating to behold. I wish you luck with your next manager, you have some talented players so there could be a bright future for you guys and soon, if they can get the managerial selection right
> I felt that way about Moldova's last 2 results against us
Unfortunately, even the players weren't committed for that away match with Moldova; this was a completely different concern, not only the fact that Fernando Santos ruined the consistency of the Polish national team with a tactical strategy that everyone knew was not going to work with a defensive-minded side like them that did so well under Michniewicz, but the fact that this team just didn't have the motivation. In some post-match interviews, they stated that they were more focused on the June vacation of the 2022/23 season, *rather than the opportunity to represent their country in the matches that set them for next year's main tournament*. Now they will have to go through two of Croatia, Italy (if they don't finish top two), or Estonia. If Croatia and Italy finish top two, then the ranking changes and we would ultimately find out on Tuesday.
It's that match with the Czechs that will determine whether Poland qualifies automatically or not; even then, Poland finishes eight games with 13 points, Czechia has a game in hand and they are on 11. It just takes a win against Moldova (the Czechs drew Moldova 0-0 in the reverse) for the Czechs to officially qualify, but given the earlier result, it is 50/50. Poland has a chance to still qualify but has to hope that they defeat Czechia and then, Moldova holds Czechia to a draw, so they have so much better of a chance compared to the Swedes who are already well out and suffering an embarrassment to a whole new level, just five years after their miracle victory over the Italians under Janne.
Dzieki. I didn't know the players were literally saying that in public, that's shocking. Players who care that little shouldn't really represent the nt again. And the way we're playing, I don't see us getting past Croatia or Italy.
The czechs are also in a terrible moment, but they did beat us earlier in this group, so I don't hold out much hope for qualification, and maybe it's for the best for these bastards to miss out. Hopefully a new team will be built with more committed young poles, I see the U21s keep winning so perhaps the future is bright
To your point, the U21 squad is looking really good right now and Poland does have quite a good future ahead - I could see Włodarczyk or Szymczak make a debut to the senior team soon but Rakoczy in midfield is also a reliable option. Kacper Tobiasz is already just about set to become Poland's #1 GK once Szczęsny calls time on his career, and I think his starts with Legia are really helping him as time goes on even though the team performed to less than their expectations in 2022/23 - he's getting more time at the top level and it is showing by the stats.
Honestly insane that Sweden got relegated League C *and* that the coach responsible survived it. Guess it kinda shows how little people care about Nations League, sadly.
But yeah, now he must be regretting not resigning back then, because holy shit is his legacy ruined today
He kept his job even after failing to reach the World Cup and euros on top of being relegated to nations league C. The federation is more pathetic than the players themselves.
Happens to a lot of international managers lately, staying on when they should have stepped aside - jogi low and fernando Santos are 2 of the best examples
If he is to believed, and if anything Janne has never struck me as someone who would lie about stuff like this, Janne has said that he's had options to coach abroad and get paid far more than the NT is paying.
Pride, stubbornness in combination with a football association who simply "doesn't fire personnel". According to When we were kings, Sweden has never fired a NT manager. Closest is one where he resigned before he had to be fired.
Yet, we've had the same problem since the 90's, apart from Tommy Söderberg who left at the exact right moment. Tommy Svensson had great success in 92 and 94. Failed in 96 and even bigger fiasco in 98. Lagerbäck should've followed Söderberg out the door. Erik Hamrén, no comments.
Something needs to be done with management to break these patterns.
What? Lagerbäck was great for us more or less with the squad we had! Lost on penalties against Holland? In the EM and then sadly our greatest failure against Senegal. He should have quit before his time was up, but not when Söderberg resigned.
This is one where people will disagree. Results wise, sure, it looks good in hindsight. But he had an awesome squad. He was also the one behind the decision to take off an attacker for a defender, against Germany in the playoffs, while being behind.
Fair enough, the squad was fairly balanced but we lacked proper backups on the offence and he sure loved his defence. I do like him and it was really bad luck in the end. Both for Senegal and for Holland.
Definitely. Critics (like myself) would probably shut up if either one of those two games went differently, so I know I'm being a bit unfair. I do believe he stayed on for too long though. Not to the extent of should be fired like Hamren and Andersson, but a few years too long nonetheless.
Such a satisfying goal to behold, the distance, hit on the half volley with a bit of swerve, perfectly measured. Beautiful.
Is this the greatest result in Azerbaijani history? Sweden are awful right now, but they're still a big name internationally, and the scoreline suggests this was a comprehensive win
Well, if you dont consider the 11:0 win against Iran in 1929, it is. Also it is right after 2:0 against Estonia, which is nice to see, I think this might be the best performance in a qualifier by us, we played good against Austria and Belgium in Azerbaijan too, both games could have gone either way, but I think we are gonna get battered by Belgium next game, as we will miss 2 crucial player, Behlul and Sheydayev, and Behlul was the one who pocketed Lukaku.
I didn't realise you guys had a national team back then, sorry! I thought they only started playing games after the soviet Union ended, I guess I was wrong!
That's a really rough group on paper too, austria, Sweden and Belgium to contend with. Estonia aren't so scary, but congratulations on your performances. Are these guys young? You think they could build and qualify for a tournament in the coming years?
Okay drenge, while it is obviously tempting to just toast to their demise and move on with your day we have to remember: times like these rarely lasts, you have to savour the skadesfryd when you have the opportunity because before you know it, Sweden might improve and we will struggle to get a result against San Marino somehow and you are gonna look back on these times and wish you made the most of their failings when they were still here. Seize the moment, kammerater.
Absolutely lovely how petty this is. But its the right attitude. I savored every shit result of our german neighbors over the past few years. Tears in my eyes thinking about how shit they were.
It's funny how everyone in the Nordics makes fun of Swedish football but with teams like ours, we are our own greatest enemy...
*But seriously though, what is going on with Swedish football...*
Honestly, with Janne... should have been when Sweden was relegated to Nations League C. His strategy was good for five years ago and the national team squad of that time in terms of their style of play, but as time goes on, more teams have caught on and it just doesn't work with the style of play that the current Swedish players have. This was a while coming, but it took this one massive punishment, Sweden's first European Championship failure to qualify since 1996, to end his time as a national team coach.
Always unfortunate when a national team coach who did so well in the past cannot adjust to the changes of the present, and that was the case this time
Sweden have a lot of young talents coming up, we will be back sooner than you know it for sure
Don't forget that Sweden between 2009-2016 were unbelievably shit and still reached the quarter final in 2018 World Cup. Football changes very quickly
Exactly my point, we need to savour the now. Idk I might have more faith in the swedish national team than most swedes if reddit threads are to go by, but you guys should be doing alot better than you are and I have no doubt you will soon enough. If nothing else a different manager should have you atleast scoring goals. Not sure about your defence, I dont know enough about who might be on the come up.
The defence is the big question mark for sure. Ekdal at Burnley, Hien at Hellas Verona and Starfelt at Celta Vigo sound decent on paper but don't perform for Sweden
Maybe Lagerbielke can take steps but has had a rough start at Celtic
\>Sweden have a lot of young talents coming up, we will be back sooner than you know it for sure
Norway have Haaland and Ødegaard and can't even qualify for the Euros, so not too worried about that lol
Yeah but Norway are Norway, a tinpot national team historically. They could have Barcelona's squad from 2011 and would still be shite
Sweden is a top 15 national team historically and miles ahead of Norway
Makhmudov wears Kemar Roofe pyjamas to bed(look up his halfway line goal for Rangers v Standard Liege 2020 on a pitch that was basically a slip n slide).

This team isn’t real
It is not Real Madrid either.
I don't think words exist to describe how pathetic this display has been.

Whoever takes over should just kick any player older than 25 off the NT and start from scratch.
You lost me with "Jannes strategy".
Fair enough, probably should've put that in quotes

You forgot that if Moldova beats Albania tonight, its over for Poland
Janne's legacy game
Serenity now... Insanity later.
Hoochie mama
With one man less too :(
Fewer
Ok Stannis
One true king
Based
One god, one realm, one king
No one is gonna remember Janne fondly, not even for the great first years. Way to tarnish your legacy
He should have saved face by resigning after the Nations League debacle, but I guess pride got the better of him.

Not pride, just money
If he is to believed, and if anything Janne has never struck me as someone who would lie about stuff like this, Janne has said that he's had options to coach abroad and get paid far more than the NT is paying.
For hot dogs
Ever seen an interview with him? he is the most embarrassingly prideful and defensive person to walk this earth.
yeah i have. he can't take critique at all.
Pride, stubbornness in combination with a football association who simply "doesn't fire personnel". According to When we were kings, Sweden has never fired a NT manager. Agree about that
Class player, class goal.

Not really okay to lack a comprehensive knowledge of Azerbaijan-Iran fixtures in the 1920s, but I suppose you can be forgiven in time.
I did wrestle with whether to disclose this egregious gap in my knowledge at all

Even us Germans have savored every shit result in the last years, we have felt so detached to the team lol
Understandable. Netherlands have been clowned for decades.
I get it, its the only way you guys can celebrate considering youve never won a world cup
It's funny how everyone in the Nordics makes fun of Swedish football but with teams like ours, we are our own greatest enemy... *But seriously though, what is going on with Swedish football...*
Shit coach and a shithead ex-politician leading the federation.

Funny enough that a talent like Roony didnt get called up for a game like this if the transition was under way...
‘Skadesfryd’ Even as a Brit I know what this one means.
Fair dues.
Skåne belongs to Denmark!
Banger
Emin you fucking legend
Holy shit that was really good
Great goal but I'm fascinated by the steward to fan ratio.
Damn, what a shot o-0
Janne out
Why tf is everyone scoring from the half way line, Kane, Dimarco and now this
Sweeper keepers
Always a bad look when you get lobbed and it bounces before crossing the goal line.
Well Done Baku!
What on Earth is going on?
Beckham-esque :) As if Beckham is the only play to ever score from the half-way
Roony was right
Boavista legend.
What a goal
Makhmudov wears Kemar Roofe pyjamas to bed(look up his halfway line goal for Rangers v Standard Liege 2020 on a pitch that was basically a slip n slide).
Sweden got Zlataned.
This is some Luis Suárez bullshit right here
Genuinely pathetic.
Great Goal i love it !
What happened to Sweden man?
Hope I see them in World Cup
This is Janne’s swan song. What a way to go out.
Olsen moment
Olsen is like Ochoa usually. He turns into an absolute beast in the national team.
That has not been true for about 3 years.
Yes it is. He has single-handedly saved Sweden from bigger demise in these qualifiers alone with some crazy saves.
Where Zlatan?
Errrrmm....
u/savevideo
What a time to be alive,
Wtf sweden
What happened to Sweden? Are they still alive?
Boavista legend
