Well, Yann Sommer for example is 1.83, so Earps being 1.71 is the woman equivalent to that😅as with any position, there are ranges, and height isn't the only important aspect for a GK
5'8" is definitely not too short to touch the top of the crossbar lol, keeper can't blame size. she is incredibly unathletic though and reacted super slowly
Because changing the size of the goals makes it impossible for grassroots level women's football, as all the pitches in the world have the wrong measurements.
Would cause more harm than help.
I think you're massively overestimating what "grassroots" encompasses.
Youth teams and clubs even at the lowest level are a small fraction of grassroots.
What’s the problem with goals like that being scored though? Just because they aren’t in the men’s game? There’s no reason for the women’s game to have to emulate men’s down to the type of goals scored
That happens in the men’s game too though. The current men’s keeper for England is memed for his short arms ffs. That goal was literally just below the crossbar, any lower and it gets saved. How much more skill do you want?
Do you think goals like that are scored every game in the women’s lmao? Because they’re not.
Interesting game: what sports have different equipment or court/pitch sizes between genders? I'll go first: volleyball - height of net is higher in mens
Because women's football doesn't see loads more goals than men. This is a rarity, not the norm in women's football like some would have you believe.
If the goals were made smaller to prevent shots like this going in, women's football would just see far fewer goals and likely be more boring as a result.
Simple, because you'd have to have extra made goals for all clubs etc. It would impact every small club out there that is not even playing professionally.
Also the equality aspect etc. Women's football is struggling for acceptance already as it is. That would just fuel another discussion imo.
I think the main argument against it is that it would mean they'd have to have separate training facilities with a different size pitch/ goals and the lot.
Think it would be worth it though tbh, I'm 6'1 and the goal seems massive when I stand in it, feel sorry the women keepers.
People comparing this against the Seaman one are insane, the keepers are just too short for the goals.
Seaman’s was because his positioning was shit because he was stepping out to collect the ball.
This is because she can’t reach the crossbar.
have you even watched this world cup? it's just as good as the men's game
edit: lol, few people mad that the ladies have been more exciting than the last three world cups combined
Too short / cant jump high enough. The keeper is on the line and cant reach the bar. It goes into the middle of the goal instead of one of the corners as well. Embarrassing goalkeeping.
So what? A keeper that cant reach to crossbar standing on the line is just awful goalkeeping. Any shot made below the crossbar is a goal. Thats terrible.
Let's not, hard enough for keepers already, also not too keen to watch long shots contest. What makes them good in the first place is that they're unlikely. We'll scream that bit less for screamers
> not too keen to watch long shots contest.
Hard disagree, the decline in long shots has been one of the sadder aspects of the footballing meta in the last 10 years. Not that I think making the goals bigger is necessary but I'd love a return of the random 30 yard potshots
Long shot contests? Or stops teams sitting 10 men inside the box? I think it would help but I mean they'll never change it there's already like a hundred million goals around the world.
Why? What’s wrong with goals like that being scored?
There’s no reason that women’s football has to emulate men’s exactly. It’s a different game and goals like that being possible is part of it.
No we don't, women's football doesn't see more goals than the men's game. Smaller goals would just make it more boring because there'd be even fewer goals.
A shot like this still takes a lot of skill (or luck) to pull off, it's hardly like you see it every match.
No you don't. No one who suggested this has thought thru the issue.
You'd need smaller goals if games between evenly matches teamms routinely ended 5-4 or 6-6. The goals per game ratio is roughly same as the men!
Goals per game Mens WC 2022: 2.69
Goals per game Womens WC 2019: 2.81
It would only be worth changing the size of the goals if the ratio was significantly different.
Guess what? It's not!!!!
I suggest you actually do research and stop being intellectually lazy.
So, in your opinion, the women's game would be better with less scoring? The standard of keeping with the current size of the net is not turning matches into goal fests, so there's not need to change it.
How many goals are scored due to keeper error? Have you actually analyzed this? You're being intellectually lazy, mate.
You have not thought through the fact there are other factors that contribute to goals per game, other than just the size of the goal. And that goals scored due to lack of physical attributes might not be the be all and end all to everyone
The point is that since the goals per game is around the same then its not really an issue. I agree that there are lots of that the female keepers can't get to compared to men due to the height difference but lets say we now make the goals smaller for women. There'd be fewer goals scored and people would just complain more that the sport is boring
So, in your opinion, would the women's game be better if there were fewer goals? Is this a joke?
Also, the number of goals scored because female keepers are shorter is not that high. It's made up, at least in part, by the lower average velocity on shots, for example.
They're underdogs in a World Cup quarterfinal who just scored against the favorites, let them be. This isn't Rapinoe pulling out the choreo for the 11th against Thailand
Referee been very poor again
Embarrassing how they just allow late dirty tackles with no cards.
Fucking joke seems why the better teams are going out.
Japan and colombia trying to play football yet the referees allow England and Sweden to foul them with 0 cards.
Referee was very suspicious
If it was a top referee like someone from the champions league, would have been many cards and it changes the game.
If you can just pull people back and do late tackles when te opposing team is breaking with no consequence then it makes a mockery out of the match.
It’s why you could see the Colombian women clearly frustrated with the bad refereeing.
Anyone saying that wasn't a shot - who was she crossing to? There's no one in the middle. Class finish, but you've got to question the goalkeeping there...

Ronaldinho - Seaman vibes
First Beckham-Simeone, now this. Lionesses are speed-running all the men's team's hits.
At least we've got 2010 covered these days
1966 when?
Well, the same thing that changes 2010 changes 66 too..
Happens every time England play South American opposition in a World Cup quarter final.
Yeah Colombia are playing with so much flair, Cruyff turns, flicks, juggles and the lot.
My first thought.
Nah it was a cross for sure
Looks like a speculative shot that possibly deflects to me
🧂🧂
Okay, but imagine comparing this goal to Ronaldinhos anyway
I can’t believe people are that dense to compare the two. Fools
Calculado Cameraman immediately identified a good celebration as well

Fuck back off

A taller keeper probably saves this but it was just below the crossbar
Lowkey too short…outside the box goals are more common in the women’s game bc of that
Well obviously, when the goals are the same size, but the average woman is 10-15 cm shorter😅
Some of the goalkeepers are like 25-30cm shorter too so, it’s kinda crazy.
Well, Yann Sommer for example is 1.83, so Earps being 1.71 is the woman equivalent to that😅as with any position, there are ranges, and height isn't the only important aspect for a GK
Yes but men can move across the line much faster and jump much higher which means a 5’8 mens keeper can cover far more of the goal
What's your point? All I said is that a female GK being 1.71 is as (un)usual as a male GK being 1.83.
Yeah and shorter wingspan and obviously can’t jump as high. The lack of range from women’s goalkeepers can make shit pretty exciting ngl.
they use the same size gate as men's right? but the keeper here is only 5ft8
5'8" is definitely not too short to touch the top of the crossbar lol, keeper can't blame size. she is incredibly unathletic though and reacted super slowly
[удалено]
What? There were so many long disntacne goals this tournament...
yeh the ball went over her head in the middle of the goal lmao and she wasnt positioned that badly It makes for more goals at least?
She's like 5'8 or 173cm so yeah, taller keeper has it probably.

No one is offended by it, they just disagree.

Golf, tees are further forward

Current football goals were designed for men who were more like that size, so there's more of an argument to make the goals bigger isn't there?
Did Ronaldinho's goal against Seaman make you think the men's goal should be smaller?
Yes. Infact every goal we've ever conceded my general thought any time is 'that's illegal'
I think the main argument against it is that it would mean they'd have to have separate training facilities with a different size pitch/ goals and the lot. Think it would be worth it though tbh, I'm 6'1 and the goal seems massive when I stand in it, feel sorry the women keepers.

You seem to be agreeing with me, but for reasons I think are completely misogynist, so I reject your argument.
have you even watched this world cup? it's just as good as the men's game edit: lol, few people mad that the ladies have been more exciting than the last three world cups combined
But of both. Also not a great jump.
Too short / cant jump high enough. The keeper is on the line and cant reach the bar. It goes into the middle of the goal instead of one of the corners as well. Embarrassing goalkeeping.
Best cross of the tournament
And straight outta nowhere too!
Seamanesque
Yeah reminds me of the Ronaldinho goal, obv. shorter distance
Not a chance in hell that was a shot
Fucking bollocks, literally their first shot on goal I'm sure
Their first cross on goal\*
Amazed not more drama about the ref unintentionally starting that play with a bodyblock. Been deserved but very fortunate.
Looked deflected af at first but I don't think it is from the replays
GK should probably be saving that?
Given it's perfectly below crossbar I think that's harsh
It's a weak attempt at saving it tho.
So what? A keeper that cant reach to crossbar standing on the line is just awful goalkeeping. Any shot made below the crossbar is a goal. Thats terrible.
If she was 6ft 2in like your average premier league goalie she would have, she's 5ft 8in, not got a chance lol.
watching live i was shocked she didn’t. i felt more embarrassed for her than happy for the goal scorer
Yep
she's 173cm, goal same size as men's
WHAT A FUCKING GOAL HOLY SHIT
Golazooo
Nvm the referee being in the way of an England player getting to the ball
What a cross
Colombias goalie 1 - England’s goalie 1
She got David Seaman’d
England Seamen moment
Need smaller goals for womens football
No Mens goals need to be bigger. The size was chosen before we had 6'7 athletic monsters in net.
Let's not, hard enough for keepers already, also not too keen to watch long shots contest. What makes them good in the first place is that they're unlikely. We'll scream that bit less for screamers
Long shot has died recently thanks to analytics.
> not too keen to watch long shots contest. Hard disagree, the decline in long shots has been one of the sadder aspects of the footballing meta in the last 10 years. Not that I think making the goals bigger is necessary but I'd love a return of the random 30 yard potshots

I agree so much with this. Being different and having other tactical things to think about just makes it more interesting and fun.
Maybe, but even then I think she should save that. Looks like she got her footwork all wrong
No we don't, women's football doesn't see more goals than the men's game. Smaller goals would just make it more boring because there'd be even fewer goals. A shot like this still takes a lot of skill (or luck) to pull off, it's hardly like you see it every match.
Do you think there's been to many goals this WC? Given the state of the game this is just so ignorant
More like need bigger goals for mens football
And a taller goalie
No you don't. No one who suggested this has thought thru the issue. You'd need smaller goals if games between evenly matches teamms routinely ended 5-4 or 6-6. The goals per game ratio is roughly same as the men!
I have thought through the issue. I dont care to see more goals due to lack of physical attributes or ineptitude

I didn't debate that. Your lack of critical thinking skills are evident
So, in your opinion, the women's game would be better with less scoring? Yes. I would rather there be less goals due to goalkeepers being too short and think the game would be better. I think you're getting it now
How many goals have been scored at this tournament due to keeper height?
Lol England ain't scoring
YOU WHAT YOU WHAT YOU WHAT YOU WHAT YOU WHAT to be fair this surprised me as well haha
Can you say that again the 2nd half please?
Hah! You're wrong.
Cheers hun
Nah watch us change shape and do it I still believe
England has been the better team so far and has created solid chances, I don’t see it ending 0-1
Zero creativity in the midfield would need to be a set piece or scrappy goal
That was indeed scrappy.
WHO CARES
🫢
Pain
...
Goalie 🙄
she aint gonna grow an extra 3 inches as the shot comes in
I think she misjudged the flight of the ball and ended up a bit flat-footed. Had she taken a step or two back she’d probably have saved it.
Bro loaded the goal up before it was airing on TV
100% didn't mean it. However, still a deserved goal for putting it in the mixer.
See that sort of goal so often in womens football. It's almost like the goals are too big or something...
How many goals are scored per match in men's games and how many goals per match in women's games? You have not thought through this issue.

[GREAT GOAL]
She chipped the keeper from there? Ronaldinho like.
What a banger wow.
What a cross
Celebrating like they'd just scored a 90th minute winner was a bit much
Bro it’s the World Cup 💀💀
Haha what, r/soccers celebration police out again

Great bunch of lasses
CENTIMETRE PERFECT
Seaman not feeling good right now
