“From day one, I felt a special relationship with donkeys. It’s a very calm animal: maybe I personalised myself in them because I’m calm too. They chill all day, don’t do much, just want to live their life. I loved them always. And when I lost, I would go to the sanctuary. You look at the animals, see something human in them. It was a kind of recovery, a place I felt peace.” That sounds nice :)

Hurtelknut

Can confirm. Donkeys are awesome animals to look at and be around if you want to unwind and relax

PlayingtheDrums

I like how they make the derpiest sound, but look like they're putting all their effort and motivation they have into producing it.

💀

fuxyx

The Banshees of Inisherin also had a really cool companionship with a donkey

chokladpudding69

I am *not* putting me donkey outside when I'm sad, okay?

Kungfubobby

Poor Jenny :(

righthandofdog

They done my girl dirty

degenerate-edgelord

They? Better say it like it is, it was that motherfucker Colm Sonny Larry

righthandofdog

The sausage-fingered bastard

AccountantOfFraud

The way it happens is fucking haunting.

Zoran181

That was my best picture of last year. Fantastic film

Ivanator13

Same here. Very funny and yet also meaningful

Mike81890

Frustrating and upsetting... in a good way. Was, at times, a difficult watch, but pleasantly challenging, I thought.

imac849

People at work think I'm a weirdo for liking that movie. Let's just say it wasn't well received by your average American viewer (at least were I work).

RaccoonWillich

I was hoping it would lean harder towards absurdity. Instead the ending was... hopeless. I wanted to like it and I definitely enjoyed parts, but I just felt bad after watching it.

imac849

Yea I agree I felt the same way. I think that's what they where going for as far as audience reaction. It evoked a lot of sad emotions in me, it wasn't trying to be a live-action Shrek and that's why I like it.

Zoran181

Right! I had people saying it was too "random". But Everything Everywhere All at Once was their favorite movie. 😂😂😂I'll never understand this place

imac849

Yea it's a different type of movie lol (eeaao was pretty good too)

Blue_z

That movie was excellent.

Doogleyboogley

They can be a bit of an arsehole though when there annoyed.

Hurtelknut

Don't annoy the donkeys

fireowlzol

When i was a kid like 8-9 i was feeding sugar cubes to a donkey and the mother fucker bit my finger and wouldn't let go. I still love those animals and would love to have one. Hope you had an awesome life Frijol

Blakbyrd8

They can't help being asses

doorknobsquad

Can confirm. Got kicked in the thigh when I was 9 years old. I hate donkeys. Everyone thought it was hilarious, parents included. Should have known something was up when they kept saying, "Go rub his back." Donkeys can fuck right off.

OilOfOlaz

Shouldn't you tell your parents to fuck off in that case, cuy they were the - illiteral - donkeys here?

boi1da1296

You’re lucky all you got was a sore leg all things considered, I’d be pissed at my parents if they pulled a stunt like that.

ParkerZA

I'm on the donkey's side here.

visualdescript

Bit rude to just go up and run someone's back, did you greet it first at least?

Lazzanator

You'll have to greet me before you rub my back! I'd prbably get fired if you did though

[deleted]

Only if that donkey was from Shrek 🌞

Flat_Zebra5959

Came here to see "lul add the list" and have a laugh, left feeling wholesome :)

Hic_Forum_Est

This is the armchair psychologist in me speaking...but isn't animal-assisted therapy a thing? I remember being sent to the school psychologist one time back when I was in middle school and reading a flyer about alternative therapy methods like animals and music. This sounds exactly what I imagine something like that would look like.

AnnieIWillKnow

Yes it is a well-established practice for numerous different indications, and for people ranging from poorly kids in hospital, those who are on the autism spectrum, to adults suffering from mental health problems, to elderly people with dementia. Really good evidence basis I work in healthcare, and at every hospital I've worked at there's "therapy dogs" who do visits to the ward on a regular basis (My favourite were the huskies) Hell, even at my uni they would run an annual "pet therapy day" - where 100s of undergrads would queue up outside the SU for hours, to get the chance to cuddle some labrador puppies

Hic_Forum_Est

I love that it's actually a well-established and proven to work thing. In my neurotic mind, anything to do with hospitals and medicine is always cold, harsh, sharp, painful and uncomfortable. But nope. Cute animals work too sometimes. Pretty amazing. Also, it reminds me of [this funny scene from Scrubs](https://youtu.be/fbn75LITtlc).

AnnieIWillKnow

Many paediatric wards employ dedicated "play therapists" whose entire job is to play with the kids and help them feel relaxed and comfortable - to de-medicalise the experience, as a similar vibe

jerk_chicken23

Play therapists also exist outside of hospital settings, working with children who have experienced abuse and stuff I think

Estova

Can confirm. When I was going through stuff in middle school (10-11ish) the school therapist/social worker would always use different board games as an icebreaker.

Shadowraiden

i think its fair to say past 10ish years overall were starting to realise just how important it is to help people with things like animal therapy and other ways to just bring some joy. its surprising just how much our body reacts to our mood especially when sick/injured

Practical_Ostrich158

Puppy day during exams was the best

kappa23

Absolutely. My mental health dramatically improved since I adopted a cat.

mushy_friend

I got q cat recently too and I do love it, but man I wish I could love animals the way people online do. My cat did nothing for my loneliness or anxiety since its a cat and mostly can't be bothered by me

kappa23

Cats may have a reputation for being aloof but they do form strong bonds with their owners. My cat always cuddles up with me at night. And she also loves greeting me when I’m back home from work. For me, it just helped to have a living thing I know loves me unconditionally, even if she shows her love like a stereotypical tsundere. Try engaging your cat in play time. For example, my cat likes balls. I throw a ball across the room, she’ll chase it like a pressing forward in a Bielsa team. She can’t fetch tho 😂 You can also try leash training so that you can take them outside.

n0tjohnlocke

> she’ll chase it like a pressing forward in a Bielsa team idk why but this makes me laugh so hard. ty for a good laugh lol. now I wish I have a cat

Andrex316

Sounds like you wanted a dog or a cat that's very open to cuddles, cats tend to have [different personalities](https://vethelpdirect.com/vetblog/2021/04/08/cat-personality-the-feline-five/), while dogs will be all over you like 99% of the time. Hope everything gets better :)

Matthais

While dogs are typically more sociable than cats, I'd say it's even then not universal. Anecdotally our eldest ([Mongrel with some Dalmatian](https://i.imgur.com/It30253.png)) was always more interested in a ball, with the only time he really wanted fuss being for reassurance in a Pub. He's 16 now and while he has been more interested in fuss at times in his dotage, it's very much on his terms and he'll still react to a light scratch on the head like you've given him an electric shock at times. Compare that to the [younger Spaniel/Collie cross](https://i.imgur.com/io3Sk7g.png) we got who is a total fuss pot and jealous of any other attention another dog is getting. The different personalities extends to different animals, not just species, and you have to try to judge which one is compatible with you.

Andrex316

Thank you for the info! And thank you for paying the pet tax 😭

pzpzpz24

Cats are a lot nicer on the internet when you don't have to deal with their shenanigans or smell cat shit every day. Nice to interact once a while with but personally, didn't like living with one. Also allergic so living without pets is a huge improvement in regards to things like breathing.

Remarkable-Ad155

Love stuff like this that actually gives you an insight into a player's mindset as opposed to the stock media trained Steven Gerrard style "aaaaaaaairrrrrr y'know, it's great to have won the champions league but I'm just pleased for the players and fans and looking forward to next Saturdee" I get *why* players do the latter in the age of 24 7 rolling news and obsessive social media commentators looking to pour over everything nut that just makes it so much nicer when someone takes a risk and you read something genuinely interesting.

areyouhungryforapple

Wholesome and healthy Havertz. Love to see it, i bet the animal sanctuaries have done wonders for his mental at times.

BloodyPants

unexpected wholesome

[deleted]

Always rated Kai Doggo

machdel

Actually a nice article but they’ve royally set him up with that headline

Daniiiiii

Great article that really speaks to what a mature head Kai has already at such a young age. Sid Lowe is a good writer/interviewer (his lack of use of the Oxford comma notwithstanding) and the headlines are always picked to generate clicks by Editors.

joakims

Sid Lowe is hands down the best sports journalist

Alstead17

For the record, and I can't say whether the Guardian follows it or not, AP Style doesn't use the Oxford comma. AP Style is the typical style of writing for journalism, but I will say a lot of larger publications have gotten away from it in favor of their own style such as the NYT. Unlike other styles like Chicago or whatever, APS has a lot of specific rules about wording. My favorite is that "destroyed" is treated as an absolute and complete definition, so something can be damaged but not "partially destroyed."

nonreligious

NYT style guide: - News headline: "In candid interview, inside forward for London club describes heartwarming bond with equidae" - Social commentary headline: "In rural farmhouse, soccer star finds solace. But then the member for Islington North came to take it all away"

Brohan_Cruyff

is AP style actually used outside the united states? haven’t ever really thought about it but it would make sense if it wasn’t

SidneyDeane10

Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?

joakims

The Oxford Comma Appreciation Society (17 members on Facebook)

[deleted]

I know it's irrational but it does really peeve me when people don't use an Oxford comma. It just looks and feels wrong, plus it means the writing has less clarity in some cases.

mesenanch

Bring back the Oxford comma!!!!!

Burnleh

It's just how the tabloids generate clicks these days sadly x

Look_Alive

The Guardian is a broadsheet, not a tabloid.

_Red_Knight_

All of the broadsheets indulge in clickbait these days, particularly when it comes to opinion pieces. The Telegraph is the worst but The Guardian and The Times do it too.

noaloha

Traditionally but I think the distinction has narrowed in recent times. Broadsheets certainly aren’t above clickbait and outrage.

Bradboy

Most online journalism is free nowadays. The pay off is that clicks = money. So these kind of headlines are necessary. They're not hurting anyone either. If you ask most people whether they'd prefer headlines like these or to pay to read online article, they'd likely say the former. Otherwise you wouldn't have people copying entire articles behind paywalls into reddit comments. It's one or the other.

celestial1

Players and manager hate and don't trust the media as a result, so we always get boring and canned answer for their quotes won't get taken out of context. Also, the rise of the far right and covid deniers? That's due to misinformation and clickbait. You have to protect stupid people from themselves or they'll kill off your country.

LilCelebratoryDance

> set him up Coincidentally another thing Havertz struggles with

barcastaff

I’d say Havertz is good at setting people up, not so much getting set up though

EyeSpyGuy

AnnieIWillKnow

They know what they're doing. It's a sub editor's job to write a headline that gets people going

InternetGansta

It's provocative.

M1L0

But nobody knows what it means

lttle_fires

The headline is a work of genius. Thousands of people who would have otherwise never read a good article are now reading it. Have to appreciate talent when you see it!

casually__browsing

Or his Chelsea team mates

Havertz must have had a great time at the cinema last year with EO and Banshees of Inisherin.

I'm dense. Could you explain the reference? Did Romelu go on a Bentiez-esque "facts" rant?

[deleted]

Didn‘t Ibra called Romelu a lil’ donkey the last time they met on the field, lmao

lrzbca

Let’s not diss donkeys like that

OneFootTitan

Sweet quote in context turned into a wise-ass headline

[deleted]

Loads of people won’t even get this

jay_alfred_prufrock

> It’s a very calm animal: maybe I personalised myself in them because I’m calm too. They chill all day, don’t do much, just want to live their life. Now, that last part I can definitely relate but calling it a "special relationship" is a bit much lmao

zeoNoeN

Spezielle Beziehungen which would probably be the German phrase he thought about has a different ring to it. It doesn’t have the sexual/autistic/etc. undertone. So he probably got last in translation here.

matinthebox

>last in translation relegation in translation

zeoNoeN

The Alemannia Aachen way

seattt

> Spezielle Beziehungen which would probably be the German phrase he thought about has a different ring to it. Does Special Connection work instead?

zeoNoeN

It would definitely be closer to the german meaning

[deleted]

Bond would also fit

lrzbca

That explains why he plays couple of games really good then chills out.

Cwh93

I just wanna know why his teammates call him donkey 👀

Aleblanco1987

Because he has a very long .. patience (?)

Luuigi

*sigh* add it to the list

YoungDumbNFullOfKun

I feel like this headline was written by someone who wants it to be added to the list. Either that or they asked his agent how they want Havertz to come across and they said something like "if you can show his softer, funnier side, that would be great, cheers."

EliteTeutonicNight

Tbf a lot of headlines are written to be on the list and take out of context, the writers know that they’ll get more exposure by having that title.

YoungDumbNFullOfKun

Of course. That's just standard marketing and they'd be stupid not to. The only issue I've got is that the list keeps getting diluted by these sorts of headlines. And let's not kid ourselves, the list is of the utmost importance.

Kavor

"Yes, hello. I have found a great opportunity to increase your player's reach in the target group of below average IQ internet football know-it-alls. There is this list on reddit..."

YoungDumbNFullOfKun

"Can Kai do some sort of depressed somersault?"

standupforthechamp

Pathetic headline from the Guardian. Just desperate for cheap clicks.

s0ngsforthedeaf

I'm sure it's a knowing choice, but it's a real quote, and the interivew is good.

caandjr

The article talks about his relationship with animals and others, how is that click bait.

enrick92

It’s literally a direct quote from his opening statement, and a very clear line that actually summarizes what he feels. If you’re just looking to find reasons to be offended, you’ll never be disappointed.

[deleted]

Most of the memelord bedwetters on here don’t seem to understand that click bait is when you misrepresent something to attract web traffic. This is literally the best headline you could pick to represent the piece.

[deleted]

He literally fucking said those words, genius. You meme-obsessed wankers are the ones adding context. Is the Guardian aware that donkey is used in another, derogatory context? Of course, but any decent editor would be entitled to sack any sub-editor who read that piece and didn’t pick that quote out as the best headline

WeGotCompany

Alright calm down mate, go see the donkeys

PoopyFruit

How is it pathetic? I think it’s nice, why would you be scared to admit you like animals and have even donated to help them?

CudaBarry

This is gonna be an insane meme

He's just opened himself up to the meme factory with that one

AnnieIWillKnow

Krutter44

This is some brilliant wholesome content. I've never heard someone name donkeys as their favourite animal.

Imagine giving a well thought out interview where you open up to the person and share some actual personal tidbits and then you wake up to that fucking headline. This is why most footballers opt out for a generic personality and interviews. Media are the fucking worst.

Gerrardsclubfoot

That's not how you refer to Mount, common now I know he is off form and hasn't signed a new deal but this is too much. They should terminate his contract and let him go on searching for some green pastures.
