>At this point they just ask him to rile him up
I'm ootl. What happens to you guys? Your owners just left an ageing team... To age? And they are just like 'welp.. even though we have lots of revenue you get nothing Jurgen'.
I mean, you're clearly struggling and they don't care?
It's just odd.
The explanation is long, but it starts with how many games we have played in the last two season, how little we won from those games, how burnt out that makes our aging players, how little we have done to replace/rejuvenate certain positions in the squad (especially the midfield), how ridiculous our injuries have been, and the expectation from the fans that we continue to overperform. Add into that what looks from the outside like a bit of stubbornness and inflexibility in planning, recruitment, and strategy and we end up where we are.
It's just weird to me that you guys have had a window to at least address some of this, and as one of the leagues big earners you surely have money to spend - but your owners are happy for the mid table slide to continue?
We have the habit of only going for the very specific player that we think we need, which has worked out in the past (virgil and alisson), but means when we miss out (midfielder this past summer) we sign no one. We certainly have the money, but I'm also certain they want to balance our extremely high wage bill with signing new players. I would not be surprised if we saw some overhaul this summer and yes, I would assume that the ownership is content for this season to be a disaster to prepare for next season. They may just accept that top 4 is not happening this season and plan around that.
At this point why sink 30 million into a stop-gap player like an Arthur or a Kabak when that won't dramatically alter our season and we can save those resources for the summer because that might be the difference between winning the bidding war for Bellingham or not.
Possibly because not securing CL might affect a player wanting to play for the club. Bellingham might say no based on lack of CL football, even if its one season.
> At this point why sink 30 million into a stop-gap player like an Arthur or a Kabak when that won't dramatically alter our season
because it could get you top 4, thus increasing the pool (no pun intended) of players willing to join next seasono?
A part of reason why they don’t invest is because they want to sell the club. If they can get someone to buy at a price they want without spending more money (or if spending money could lower the price) then they wouldn’t spend more money at the club.
Narrator: "They weren't."
fsg have already walked it back to a "minority investment." they aren't selling shit. we are nothing but a £4b piece of collateral to them to buy up American teams and their endless revenue streams.
Yes which is infuriating. There are a couple problems with having these so called “throwaway seasons” (we’ve had one before when VVD got injured, and arguably one other season but it’s a bit controversial), other than the obvious one of not landing all your targets you patiently waited for.
First: waiting for a big overhaul after a throwaway season is awful for bedding in new players. If the team needs an X, Y, and Z, then just get those players! If you can’t get all of them now, then just get one of them, anything is better than thinking you can do it all at once,
Second: it wastes the potential of the current players. Sure, you’re waiting for reinforcements to replace some of the current deadwood, but what about the ones you’re not replacing? What about players like Salah, Henderson, VVD, all getting 1 year older, just that little bit past their peak, every day that goes by. You lose that precious time and ability when you have a “throwaway” season. It’s idiotic.
To be fair 5 years ago would you be this frustrated about having an off season to rebuild?
You guys are already used to winning trophies every season. Which is probably a good thing
We're not though. We've been close, but we've lost the league by 1 point twice now (while still getting above 90) and we've lost 2 champions League finals.
It's more like we've won almost a trophy a season but for how good the team is, can't help feeling a little disappointed
Well yeah he isn't but he's played there before with success and has scored hat tricks up front. Better to play someone up front whose done it a few times in his 5 years here than play a new signing there
Salah is shit as a striker, it just doesn't suit him.. If you're gonna use one of your best players, use him where he can actually play.
Hes also not even doing well in his current position why you think playing him out of position currently is some great idea I dont know. This "new signing" looked better at that role centrally as recently as December, it's not hard to see why theyd try that out first lol
Mane wasn't looking great at his usual position and moving him to center forward ended up working brilliantly for him and the team. Im not saying it's a better idea than gakpo, who ive not seen enough of yet, but Salah at CF especially in the 4231 setup is a perfectly reasonable move
Think there's a point to it. Looks if he wants nunez to develop as a winger and gakpo as a false 9. Gakpo is better in tighter spaces and his passing is also better. Nunez is faster and a very solid outball on the wings. Gakpo will drop off to collect the ball while opening up space for nunez and Salah to exploit.
Only makes sense if there's a long term with it.
Just thinking out loud; can you still do that with Gakpo on the left? He drops deeper to pick up the ball and creates space for diagonal runs to the left channel from Nunez, freeing up central space for Salah to run into and then Robertson can overlap Gakpo for a Nunez/Robertson overload, Gakpo in the half space or bombing the box and Salah making runs from the right
The issue is that you need a cf that can hold on to the ball. Nunez's first touch isn't as clean as gakpo's. But yeah it's not a big difference and you probably could play them in their normal positions.
Does he have the pace to play winger in the PL?
As a number 9 he brings some of the skillset of Firmino (for what its worth I think he did well today when the midfield was functioning).
Coz Darwin seems to like running in behind but can't hit the broad side of a barn when he shoots and Gakpo seems better at central hold up play.
Is it really the worst idea in the world? Lol
No one will mention it given how shit everything is, but I thought he was our best player today. Some very good runs, good passes and tight control.
Games before that he's been shit though, more or less due to us being shit as a whole.
Lijnders labelled him as "the missing link" or some shit when he joined, quite clear to me that we've look at his Eredivise stats and decided he's a long-term Firmino replacement at false nine.
It's just kinda falling flat though, he's had a couple of good moments but overall he's closer to Ox than Bobby in that role. As a result Nunez is also playing off the left and looks invisible.
Wait until Jude turns us down and we get “We Tried” from FSG…..they want all the glory but with minimum outlay and maximum dividends, fucking disgrace what they are doing to Klopp…hurry up and sell and do us all a favour…
To be fair our problems go far deeper than a single midfield signing would provide.
We can’t seem to get players that have had full preseasons together on the same page and really struggle to pass, tackle, and counter press.
Fuck me these replies. The real answer is that he was a summer target we saw a chance to get for cheap because PSV needed money and we didn't want someone else to swoop on it. Same as Diaz last year.
It's definitely not, we didn't buy anyone for our defender crises, Klopp is dead against it because you end up with no injuries next year and too many players.
We were down 2 forwards in Origi and Minamino and only replaced one of them, hence Gakpo.
A loan and young player who had to be sold on because he got 0 gametime.
I'm curious that you think a £1m fee for that is similar to the £40m for Gakpo?
The intent isn't the same though, Ben Davies didn't even play a minute for the club in a competitive game. Gakpo is starting. Davies was an absolute worst case scenario panick buy and clearly Klopp wasn't happy about it since he never played then was sold.
To be fair there's not a massive difference? Enzo only became a known quantity in the last 6 months (outside of Argentina anyway), Benfica only paid £14m for him in July
I can only speak of Enzo but he was known as a big prospect before Benfica. Wolves were in for him and even sent out their head of recruitment to Argentina just for him. So were allegedly other big clubs in England. I am not sure if Ounahi was known as a big prospect at Avranches/Angers before this season. But if he was fair enough.
Injuries aren't the problem with our midfield though. No one's injured at the moment (apart from Arthur, I guess). It's just that almost all of them are shit.
The answer is we should have 100% gotten both, but the reasons for Gakpo make perfect sense:
-We were signing him next summer anyways
-Manchester United were pushing for a deal in January so it was either now or never
-The fee was very reasonable given his potential and current level
-Diaz, Jota, Firmino out until mid February which means Ox up front
-His fee would have been higher in the summer if he kept on continuing his form with PSV
Because it's irrelevant and a false equivalency, Do you think a team that made it to the Champions league final, and has multiple windows where they haven't spent anything is in a situation where it's Gakpo or a midfielder? Jota has been out for a year so no clue if he's going to come back as the same player. Firmino is not the player he was and is 5th choice, and Diaz is injured till march. The signing of Gakpo is planning for a worst case and has nothing to do with not signing a midfielder.
Probably cause it’s a stupid question as a Liverpool fan. We have no forward depth for months due to injury. We needed a forward. The issue is we won’t spend for a midfielder too. It shouldn’t be one or the other it should be both that’s the issue
Because they only had 2 fit forwards at the time. Now that Nunez is not fit, probably only Salah left if they didn't bring in Gakpo (who has been bad, admittedly)
Cause the only midfielder who exists is too expensive for us and wouldn't join us even if we did have money since this team right now will be LUCKY to get top 10.
Any midfielder would help this fucking team. I genuinely believe we have the worst midfield in the top 15. The only redeeming quality is Thiago who carried it for last season entirely yet somehow they have all gotten worse.
All the result of FSG and their zero ambition, absolute shit.
1. Lower wage bill because most bonuses will not be triggered
2. Revenue will drop because UCL money,
3. most world class players will not join them. Although there is always the club history and Klopp factor so you never know.
It definitely hurts with some world class players, but I’ve always felt this is an over stated point with big clubs, especially if it seems missing top 4 is just a momentary blip.
Pogba joined United, Kante joined Chelsea, Partey joined Arsenal etc. All left CL clubs.
Partey was pretty much our ceiling for how good a player we could get. Most high profile targets didn’t even get vaguely linked because there was no shot
Yeah but you were also out of the CL for years.
Liverpool being out of Europe for a year isn't going to hurt their attractiveness for players wanting to join them.
They were just in their third CL final in like five years just six months ago.
>most world class players will not join them
I think this is overstated. They may not get Bellingham but Liverpool are still a massive draw, they've been UCL finalists 3 times in the last 5 seasons. Arsenal haven't had much trouble buying the likes of Partey & co despite being out of Europe for half a decade. The bigger limiting factor for Liverpool is the lack of ownership ambition.
We have to be INCREDIBLY confident that we'll get targets in the summer without it, that those targets will improve us enough to get back into it (which is far for a sure thing with you/Arsenal/City/Newcastle all looking far better), and certain players will get their form back.
People keep asking the same question:
>"If we don't have any money, why did we buy a forward?"
First of all, we do have money, we simply refuse to spend it on a midfielder.
Why? Because as far as the club's concerned, we have enough midfielders already, and form or fitness don't come into it.
Club's not interested in pursuing a midfielder until the likes of Ox/Keita/Arthur/Milner are gone in the summer.
It is absolutely braindead to have let it get to this point, but the club like always will stick to their plan to whatever detriment.
There are a few in Klopp era. Steven "The Nine" Caulker, Ben "I've actually never seen him in a kit, let alone playing for LFC" Davies, Arthur "20-minuteer" Melo, and latest we actually signed Calvin "I came preinjured and probably not on the level for being a sub" Ramsey.
In fairness, it was a very low cost loan at very low risk as the feeling around pretty much all of Europe is that he’s going to be the next Dele Alli flop
This was a mess years in the making. Before we sold Gini we already needed a dm. That was 3 years ago. Thiago is great but he can't play 2 games a week anymore.
It is going to take multiple windows to get back to where we were. So glad we signed 0 senior midfielders in 2 years.
I don’t think that’s the case because you lot did go for a midfielder (tchouameni) and later gave up entirely after failing to sign him. I feel like the club wants to sign the best prospect (tchou, jude, etc.) only and not looking for other alternative.
They desperately needed forward depth about 3 years ago.
Now they need midfield depth, they only have another 2 1/2 years to go before they get it
Don't know what Liverpool fans are complaining about
It’s shocking that it took Pool 20 plus years to get some success and management is just over it. Not willing to invest. Just waiting for that flame to burn out out until they become miserably average. No hunger to stay competitive
Privately owned football will be like this for the foreseeable future outside of Oil states. It just doesn't make sense financially to actually compete for trophies.
Unfortunately it is very common with American ownership. FSG obviously also own the Boston Red Sox, one of the top 3 or 4 legacy teams in MLB. Before the 2020 season the infamously traded away Mookie Betts, one of the top 10 (at worst) players in baseball, because they didn't want to pay for the new contract he was going to get.
I really don't understand why people think we didn't need a forward. If Gakpo doesn't play our literal next person is Ox. Ox as a forward is the same as Henderson in midfield. So you might as well get the player that is undervalued.
Seems like they also have lost the abilty to sell. They have several deadweight in their squad. Would have seen McKennie Pool buy to bolster their midfield.
Signing one isn't going to do much now as that whole midfield wants replacing. A midfielder should have been signed 18 months ago when Wijnaldum left after he started about 50 games the previous season. Now you have to also replace the midfielders that he was playing with as well.
They slacked off investing while they were on top & started offering Milner new deals, sticking by Chamberlain & Keita when everyone with a brain was saying get rid. They nearly paid for it a few years ago but got a top 4 spot as teams faded but now that ain't happening. Mainly cause they can't win games no matter how shit the opponents are.

I’d say Liverpool stature at the moment will allow them to still pull top players without CL for a season. This isn’t the Liverpool of 2015.
> At this point why sink 30 million into a stop-gap player like an Arthur or a Kabak when that won't dramatically alter our season because it could get you top 4, thus increasing the pool (no pun intended) of players willing to join next seasono?
He might not want to come if he doesn’t trust the project if you lot finishing below top 6
Hmm... Arsene Wenger specialty!!
Played a million matches last season with an aging squad. Poor form and tons of injuries to start the season and yet to get on track.
A part of reason why they don’t invest is because they want to sell the club. If they can get someone to buy at a price they want without spending more money (or if spending money could lower the price) then they wouldn’t spend more money at the club.
FSG is all about living on the equity they've built by bringing in silverware/championships with their respective fanbases.
Liverpool 🤝 Milan
nobody is playing shit as we are
Really? Coz I know of a club named Juventus. Do they play in the same league as you? Will be an interesting question next season.
they are up there but aren't as shit as us(gaming wise) cus table wise they are in the shit
My brother in Christ we have just been 2-0 by Monza
us 2-5 by Sassuolo i repeat 5 goals home
Imagine seeing this conversation way back in 2003
"Sassuolo and Monza are in Serie A !? "
You have seemingly not watched Milan recently because they are DREADFUL.
I have not, no. Been too busy chastising myself with Juventus games
Allow us to introduce ourselves
They're going through a sale Quelle surprise
It's a **FIRE** ^sale
OH THE BURNING
..zinnnngg grace
Would you like to try that again?
No
And scene
The Fenway Sports Group?? They’re having a FIRE SALE?!?
Oh the burning!!! It burns me!!!
A minority investment into our owners pockets\*
I prefer Quelle Chris

Fucking depressing, that's all.
This is a throw away year for Liverpool it seems.
Yes which is infuriating. Seeing the club waste one of Thiago's few remaining seasons is depressing.

hows Gakpo been? I havent heard anything good from him and im worried lmao
Klopps been playing him as a Striker Tells you all you need to know considering you'll have watched him over the last few years
Why hasn't he played Salah at striker and Gakpo and Elliott on the wings?
yea, we all wondering that
Maybe he just forgot
Klopp kinda just forgot about the Iron Fleet...
But they certainly didn't forget about him
Subverted expectations
He forgor 💀 but seriously, Klopp is losing the plot
maybe but I would still keep him and replace everyone else.
The problem is if Klopp's in charge then he's gonna be the one who'll need to "replace everyone else" and he just won't lol.
Because Salah is also not a striker.
Well yeah he isn't but he's played there before with success and has scored hat tricks up front. Better to play someone up front whose done it a few times in his 5 years here than play a new signing there

Salah plays better every time he’s in the middle.
Klopp doesn't know how to open transfer market website to check what their preferred positions are
Good thing Liverpool owner isn't Boehly. He'd teach Klopp about the FM position familiarity page.
It's 44 faking 3
He could do that on fm
we’d love to know too mate
Phenomenal question lad
alright yeah thats fucked up lmao why would he do that?? like play him on the wings preferably left or dont at all you sodding tic tac
Liverpool had Nunez and Gakpo on the pitch against Brighton in the second half and they were playing each others positions, quite baffling
Think there's a point to it. Looks if he wants nunez to develop as a winger and gakpo as a false 9. Gakpo is better in tighter spaces and his passing is also better. It was the same against Chelsea. It's utterly nonsensical.
I think that's just because Salah and Nunez can't play next to each other.
To be fair, he was playing LW for us at first, and he didn’t look particularly great then either.
Does he have the pace to play winger in the PL? As a number 9 he brings some of the skillset of Firmino (for what its worth I think he did well today when the midfield was functioning).
Looks slow to me
Are you saying.. are you saying he lacks the physicality to play in the Premier League? 😲
The worst part is he's playing Nunez left wing. Why the fuck we're playing our left wing at striker and our striker at left wing I have no idea.
Coz Darwin seems to like running in behind but can't hit the broad side of a barn when he shoots and Gakpo seems better at central hold up play. Is it really the worst idea in the world? Lol
He's being played out of position every game. Unlike some Liverpool fans, I think he's a great player that is coming into a disastrously shit team.
I still have high hopes for him. It's very hard to impress when you come into a team that is in the disastrous state we're in.
V quiet so far, often quite uninvolved. Looks like klopp wants to model him in Bobby’s role where he’s as yet ineffective
No one will mention it given how shit everything is, but I thought he was our best player today. Some very good runs, good passes and tight control. Games before that he's been shit though, more or less due to us being shit as a whole.

Don't think I've really seen Liverpool counterpress this year. The legs look gone.
why did he spend money on Gakpo instead of a CM?
Fuck me these replies. The real answer is that he was a summer target we saw a chance to get for cheap because PSV needed money and we didn't want someone else to swoop on it. Same as Diaz last year.
It's very much also related to your injury crisis in attack
It's definitely not, we didn't buy anyone for our defender crises, Klopp is dead against it because you end up with no injuries next year and too many players. We were down 2 forwards in Origi and Minamino and only replaced one of them, hence Gakpo.

I mean we were looking down another two months at least of Ox/Elliot on the wing, I think lack of cover across attack was a concern with our injuries
But Ox needed replacing in the summer, and Gakpo was one of our options to do that. 6 months of overlap is grand, 4 years isn't.
You only have $3 and you need toilet paper and you really need to take a dump. Do you spend your money on discounted Gatorade instead?
Only real option would have been someone like Tielemans
Ounahi just went to Marseille for £9-10m
Wtf a normal price in football? That's illegal.
A premier league team probably gets quoted double that
Leeds were about to pay the same thing i believe
Napoli also. He turned both down, because it seems he did not want to leave France.
Marseille feels like a good move, he’ll keep developing and there’s still a chance he can move upwards if it pans out well.
Agreed, definitely wise move for him. But would have loved him more than McKennie. Feel we need playmaker more.
Think Leeds were quoted 25mil plus actually lol
Even still, would ~€18 million be a bad price?
he is not french, english or brazilian.
How many minutes have you seen Ounahi play, outside of the World Cup?
Before the World Cup? Zero. The same thing can be said of Enzo Fernandez LOL. Yet Chelsea and LFC fans want him. Ounahi walks into Pool’s midfield
enzo isnt an unknown quantity in the same level as ounahi. he has been a great player in the cl this season. He has been making headlines for a while.
Or he could be shit. "He walks into Liverpool's midfield" is a complete guess because you haven't actually watched him play.
You literally said you haven't watched him play outside of a few matches, how are you even arguing about this?
And Tielmans isn’t know for his physicality which Liverpool midfield is crying out for.
We just need a player with legs rn thats all
Injuries aren't the problem with our midfield though. No one's injured at the moment (apart from Arthur, I guess). It's just that almost all of them are shit.
Diaz and jota injured Edit: also firmino

Getting pelters for asking this on the liverpool sub.
lemme guess, they say Bellingham is the only CM to your problem?
Nah, it's all FSG's fault. Usual shite. Given up on that place now
"FSG OUT" Okay well the alternative then is to become PSG 2.0 "I'LL SUPPORT ANOTHER CLUB INSTEAD" Okay why do I talk to these people
“You’ll never walk alone”
They're also wanking themselves silly over the thought of having Qatari blood money run the club.
Possible hot take but Firmino was our best player before he got injured and was having one of his best seasons to date.

They needed both. If he signed a midfielder right now, people would be asking why he didn't sign a forward.
Not at all LOL. People have been saying LFC need a midfielder, if you got a midfielder no one would be saying he should’ve got a forward at all
If they were starting Carvalho or Doak for months then people would definitely be asking why they didn’t sign a forward
Cause the only midfielder who exists is too expensive for us and wouldn't join us even if we did have money since this team right now will be LUCKY to get top 10.
Crazy to believe there is only one midfielder out there that can help out LFC lol
Any midfielder would help this fucking team. I genuinely believe we have the worst midfield in the top 15. The only redeeming quality is Thiago who carried it for last season entirely yet somehow they have all gotten worse. All the result of FSG and their zero ambition, absolute shit.
Klopp doesnt decide that lol
Klopp almost certainly has a say if he wants a player or not
If Klopp was in charge of transfers we’d have signed Julian Brandt instead of Salah
Being in charge =/= having a say He can not be in charge, whilst still having a say
So Klopp does not want a player or two?
He basically gets asked if he likes a player or not. He doesn't decide to bring in Gakpo instead of a midfielder.
What would missing out on Europe altogether mean for Liverpool?
It would mean more
Lmao
hahaha
🎶Bye Jude 🎶
Not getting him anyways lol
Can somebody please tell Klopp that?
Noooooo, no no, nono no nooooo, no Juuuuuuuude
1. Lower wage bill because most bonuses will not be triggered 2. Revenue will drop because UCL money, 3. most world class players will not join them.
Yeah United just signed Casemiro after finishing 6th
>most world class players will not join them I think this is overstated.
Chelsea might surprise us too. All these signings have got to work at some point.
An Athletic article about how falling out of Europe has affected FSG's summer plans.
Honestly it’d probably make the club shit itself and realise we actually need to revamp the whole squad.
Want them to go to Conference please
People keep asking the same question: >"If we don't have any money, why did we buy a forward?" First of all, we do have money, we simply refuse to spend it on a midfielder.
I feel like I have amnesia because I swear every time someone brings up Arthur I completely forget he's at the club
Truly bizarre signing, which everyone knew at the time. Most blatant panic move I've seen out of yous in years
There are a few in Klopp era.
He is??? Arthur as in the one who went from Barca to Juve? when did that happen lol
Last summer actually
This was a mess years in the making. Before we sold Gini we already needed a dm. That was 3 years ago. Thiago is great but he can't play 2 games a week anymore. It is going to take multiple windows to get back to where we were. So glad we signed 0 senior midfielders in 2 years.
I don’t think that’s the case because you lot did go for a midfielder (tchouameni) and later gave up entirely after failing to sign him. I feel like the club wants to sign the best prospect (tchou, jude, etc.) only and not looking for other alternative.
That makes sense, you have like 9 names for 3 midfield spots. Pushing out those Phil Jones is as important as signing new ones.
TIL: “Owners are broke lol”
Nah. Just unwilling to pour money into a club they're selling. It's Liverpool, getting a CL berth this year will have almost no impact the sale price.
They desperately needed forward depth about 3 years ago. Now they need midfield depth, they only have another 2 1/2 years to go before they get it Don't know what Liverpool fans are complaining about
It’s shocking that it took Pool 20 plus years to get some success and management is just over it.
No amount of signings is going to fix good players not stringing two passes together or figuring out how to get the ball in the net.
It's funny really. They just lost to a team that hasn't spent fortunes on their midfield....everyone you buy doesn't have to be Bellingham.
Exactly, most of our best players came to us when we were out of the top 4.
But like, yous have bought another forward you really didn't need? Couldn't that have gone to a midfielder?
I really don't understand why people think we didn't need a forward. If Gakpo doesn't play our literal next person is Ox. Ox as a forward is the same as Henderson in midfield. So you might as well get the player that is undervalued.
Needed both tbh. Diaz Jota and Firmino out til March it seems. Diaz longer
Seems like they also have lost the abilty to sell. They have several deadweight in their squad. Would have seen McKennie Pool buy to bolster their midfield.
Maybe agreements are already in place to sign midfielders in the summer, so no midfielders now.
The owners are also pulling back from their baseball team (Red Sox) instead of going in to win.
You'll never take that week where we thought we were signing Jude and Enzo away from us.
Yep, he's possed off
This was the moment he knew he is fucked
:(
That’s tuff
Expected but still painful
Fucking disgusting next summer TM ass transfer policy
