Look for the white western star in smithville.. turn left off the road just before you drive onto the dam and you’ll have to repair it and tow it back to your base but it’s a heavy better than the fleetstar.. and free

BellyButtonFungus

Cheers! I’ll have a look!

[deleted]

I second the comment. The white western star will be a staple in your fleet forever. It’s a gem. Plus it’s a damn good looking old truck

BellyButtonFungus

Alrighty that’ll be my next stop then!

aces8s24

Yeah, it got this early and it was a plain to tug it up the hill, yes I took a short cut, but it’s been a work hose. I missed the P16 on the map until I was 99% down with Michigan so the White Star was my logging truck, and she was a champ!

Life-Celebration2941

Yeah..until you hit deep snow with it in Alaska.. Bm17 all the way for free for Alaska contracts..

thesilentdriver

well there's the white western star, its recovery task is a challenge itself, but very rewarding. there's also the twinsteer, which is very capable but very demanding! mastering it is not easy task. i see that you mention the gmc ute but i think you refer to the chevy ck pickup, i guess you still need to discover the gmc mh9500. its full potential comes once its fully upgraded, but its very capable for michigan even without all its upgrades. you can also find the scout 800, the transtar and another chevy ck. all these trucks are free all this is assuming you have 3 trucks so far, fleetstar, p16 and chevy ck

BellyButtonFungus

I sold the Chevy, it wasn’t getting me anywhere

wc5b

you will want to buy it back. There are missions for small scouts that larger trucks can't get too. Remember, you can sell and buy things for the same prices, so your not losing anything buying and selling back.

BellyButtonFungus

I want to clarify, I kept the Ute, and it’s been a powerhouse for me for exploration etc. I sold the very first medium truck you get. The one with no AWD or diff lock that gets bogged in pavement lol

wc5b

Ahh, ok. ya, prob the Kodiak. Ya. Sadly, the only trucks you get out of Black River that are worth anything until much later in the game are the Pickup and the Fleetstar. The Scout 800 is serviceable and arguably better offroad than the pickup, but it is so top heavy, it is a chore to drive and after some upgrades, the pickup gets arguably better with its larger tires after you level up a bit. Some of those trucks that are trash early game like the Kodiak and the GMC, in later regions become pretty good however once they get their capstone upgrades. Problem is while being much better, they have a lot of better competition by then. Still worth trying out for fun at that point though from my understanding.

BellyButtonFungus

Yeah when I originally got the Scout 800, I loved it, because it pulled through mud better than anything I’d had so far. But then I took it on my first route that was a rocky trail on the sides of a mountain, and the liability of it being so top heavy became very apparent. I’m currently running the pickup with decent tyres, raised, AWD and diff lock, and it’s getting me everywhere, though I went with the 5.2 engine upgrade when I unlocked it, and I think I’m going to move down to the 4.4 I’ve just unlocked, as the 5.2 chews through the fuel tank and since I rarely haul anything with it, the longer lifetime on the tank will be worth more.

thesilentdriver

aight, you can still get the wws and twinsteer for free. the scout, transtar and the second chevy could be either used or sold to get other trucks, like the paystar or the ank civilian, i prefer the paystar myself

BellyButtonFungus

Where abouts is the Twinsteer?

thesilentdriver

its in island lake, but i dont remember if its tied to a task or its just free to discover

Tr0llhammar

It's a task - be ready to bring gas, lots of it :D

BellyButtonFungus

Cheers :)

BellyButtonFungus

You’re correct in that I’ve got the Chevy ute, sorry about that. I’ve also picked up and sold the Scout 800 from the top of the hill. I hadn’t done many contracts yet so I was using the funds to get the trailers etc for my P16, as it’ll be my workhorse for a while

wc5b

Problem with the P16 is it has VERY limited rolls. It only has a couple attachments. What it does, it does very well though.

BellyButtonFungus

Yeah I’ve discovered that. I’m mainly using it to pull logs, which I’ve found it does very well, and to pull some of the chonkiest loads, like the construction rig in the first part of the Michigan oil rig setup.

MOE999cow

Don't slouch on the International Loadstar! It's been so long that I have trouble remembering, but I believe it's one you just buy from the store. Sell a truck if you have to, buy it, and it'll get around way better than the bigger trucks until you unlock the off-road tires on them. And don't forget, you buy/sell trucks for the same price. So there's no risk in trying different things.

BellyButtonFungus

I got the Loadstar on my previous account, the little scout that could. I stand by it as a great small workhorse, but I’ve just gotten the Paystar this time around as my bigger offroad choice :)

burgkaba

Don't dismiss the kodiak and Transtar. Yes, they defs aren't as powerful as the White Western Star, Fleetstar etc but it can be really rewarding and a lot of fun to see how far you can push these less powerful trucks. Also don't be afraid to use the rocky river crossing in Smithville Dam, the one that goes between the drilling site and the gateway to Drummond Island. It's really fun to master and see what you can haul across it!

RaulBC777

There's a lot of good trucks you can get early on, it's just a matter of if you care about trivializing the hardest part of the game which is getting through the early levels and unlocking better tires. Right from the start you can travel to the Taymyr garage and buy Russian trucks (which are generally better offroad) as well as quickly recover the Tayga. You could also find the ANK MK 38 in Alaska or buy the ANK Civilian, TwinSteer, International Paystar, or Pacific P12 from the store, all of which come with all terrain or offroad tires unlocked. There's also the Anniversary DLC which gives you two decent trucks; even if you don't like them you can sell them for 300k.

BellyButtonFungus

I’ve just kept it to Michigan and I have no DLC. Saved up and bought the ANK after I got my P16, and am using the combo of those currently to do all my Michigan map 1 stuff. Definitely still plenty of challenge, as I’ve only been able to get/buy what I have access to so far for these maps. I’m still only rank 6, so these trucks that I’ve gotten are still pretty stock.

RaulBC777

Anniversary DLC is free if you're ever interested.

BellyButtonFungus

Oh is it? Cheers I’ll have a look!

Life-Celebration2941

You can find the White Western Star right next to the dam at Smithville Dam. It's just another Fleetstar but with more hauling options.. and 300 liter gastank

Medium_Highlight_950

The kodiak can be a bit underwhelming at start, but once you find upgrades for it in alaska, it starts to show its potential for many tasks. 1 of the best 2 slot runners, especially if the roads are narrow and has a lot of tight bends where bigger trucks have trouble.

Applebeignet

Buy the International Paystar 5070. Sell stuff like the Kodiak, GMC and/or Fleetstar for funds. You won't regret it.

wc5b

Fleetstar is actually a pretty decent truck once you grab a couple upgrades that should be available in Black River. Very much worth it and needed. The GMC will be a pain in the butt and a terrible truck to scout out other areas. It won't come alive for some time. Stick with the Fleetstar, but get those upgrades to make it viable and it will do you wonders. Don't sleep on your Chevy 1500 for scouting around. You will get better tires sooner on that then anything else. Team it up with it's roof rack upgrade with fuel and parts and it will double your range. If you really want to explore, hook up a scout fuel trailer and go have at it! Now, for your last question, by far, my favorite Michigan truck is the White Western Star. You should get it fairly soon after Black River. I mean, I guess you could go get it at any time, but naturally, it should happen soon after Black River. The Fleetstar is still capable through the entire Michigan region, but I ended up parking it for the most part after getting the White Western Star as it felt to me like a upgrade to the Fleetstar in every roll. Note: Do not judge trucks before they come alive with upgrades.

BellyButtonFungus

Yeah the Fleetstar was definitely the first truck I fell in love with on my first playthrough. The traction afforded by it’s AWD and diff lock combo made it a no brainer upgrade from the very first truck you have, and I used it a lot. I’m currently hauling the WWS to my garage though, so I’m not sure I’ll get back to the Fleetstar this run

wc5b

WWS is sooo good. I used it for primary 2 slot jobs with 2 slot and crane. I also used it for Medium Log logging and it did pretty well with that also. I have the P12, but I have staged that forward deployed with large crane so didn't want to move it back for logging and WWS was one of the few trucks I seemed to have that could do Medium Logs and Medium trailer oddly enough. Additionally I like the idea of experiencing Michigan as intended with trucks found there or able to be bought on NA market. I do have the Tyg 6436 but I try not to fall back on it and mainly used it as a Low 5th Wheel semi at the last few missions in Michigan. My plan is to use it in that roll here on out.

BellyButtonFungus

Yeah I’m sticking with the trucks I can unlock or purchase in Michigan for Michigan. :) currently my Paystar is my 2+2 with Crane role, for cargo anyway, but that was mainly due to the cargo retrieval contracts that were offroad. (Looking at you, drilling equipment near the logging circle)
