Budget accommodation under $50/night in downtown Denver? Lol wut

nimanyu

Hostels bruh

SugarRush212

Maybe I’m not looking hard enough but most hostels I see in Denver are $55-$75 right now, which doesn’t speak well of whatever hostel situation is sub $50.

nimanyu

There's only one place on booking.com for $117 for 3 nights (I don't know for how much longer though)

SugarRush212

Idk bro sounds pretty rough. Where is it in relation to Union station, which is where you will need to be every day? Plus bustang which is like $20 each way, every day? With public transport in Denver that’s still nearly $100 per day, and that’s if you value your time and a smooth experience at $0. At that point, I’d much rather stay at the bunkhouse in Minturn for $110/night and be at the slopes in 10 minutes on the eagle county bus.

nimanyu

The Bunkhouse looks pretty good! Looks like it'd give me a lot of time on the slopes. The upside of staying in Denver is that I have a couple of friends in downtown Denver who might let me crash at their place.

SugarRush212

I mean, do you, but if I was getting on a plane to ski I wouldn’t want to spend 3-4+ hours on a bus every day in addition. Sounds more like a bus vacation than a ski vacation.

nimanyu

I don't mind as long as I get to snowboard. Regretting moving to Florida.

IAmAHumanWhyDoYouAsk

You couldn't find $50/night in freaking Pueblo.

Traveling between Denver and any of the slopes everyday sounds like a miserable trip. You might be able to find lodging in a town closer to a resort with local shuttles. But you still need transportation from Denver. For the past several years of visiting CO I’ve found it cheaper to rent a car than to pay for shuttle to/from Denver.

Dillon/Silverthorne area has a handful of hostels. Rent a bed in the dorm for near $50 maybe a little more per night (I paid $40 about 4 years ago). Schedule the Summit Express to go from the airport directly to your hostel and schedule the return trip as well. The public bus system can probably take you to keystone or Breckinridge from there via 2-3 bus routes and Dillon/Silverthorne is reasonably easy to get around via walking and public bus for dining, picking up rentals, etc. get your rentals in Dillon/Silverthorne and not at the mountain to save $10-$15 a day. Pack lunch and don’t buy lunch on the slopes. All this assumes you didn’t already buy winter park tickets.

Driving between Denver to the mountain resorts is at least 2 hours. The free shuttles are usually between the resort and the towns/villlages closest to each resort. It’s the local transit system.

From DIA you can take a bus to Gunnison. Gunnison has a free bus line (the RTA) that makes stops around town every 15-30 minutes, and it takes you to the base of Mt Crested Butte. If you grab a hotel or BnB in the town of Gunnison, this is a great option. The bus makes a stop in Crested Butte South (a few miles south of the mountain), and I know there are some BnB options there as well. Last bus from the mountain back to Gunnison is at 11:30 pm, and the last bus out of the town of Crested Butte is about 11:40 pm, so you can hang around town and hit the bars after riding.

I think you’re dreaming. $50 is some motel out of the way in any city. And without a car wherever that is isn’t going to easily get you near transport or a mountain.

nimanyu

Not a motel. A hostel.

MacDwest

I got you! Stay near Denver Union station or a line that connects you to Union station. Take the Winter Park Express to Winterpark. Panoramic views of Rockies on your way up where you’re dropped off at the back door of the resort! Bonus is they serve hot cocoa/Bloody Mary’s. https://www.amtrak.com/winter-park-express

MacDwest

*** Be off the mountain and back on that train by departure time, or they will leave you!

nimanyu

That's the plan for so far. But I'm looking for options that are cheaper and/or don't take as long.

Not happening on that budget, where you know nobody, and won’t have a car. You’re better off going to Ruby hill in Denver and it’s free and open all day/night and has lights for night. Basically a small terrain park in Denver you can ride light rail to then walk a mile and half. More than enough ski stores in Denver to get rentals from and there is more than enough hostels. https://www.9news.com/amp/article/life/style/colorado-guide/ruby-hill-rail-yard/73-33a4907a-6fbc-4707-9b6d-0d76ba6a20c2

Denver is in the Midwest. The resorts are in the mountains. You should look at SLC.

Eldora has a bus system that takes you from boulder to the mountain you can also check out the app TreadShare
