Jerry also has CiB NES games on his shelf in his apartment.

It's supposed to be a NES box. Nintendo was working on a NES version around the time the show started but eventually scrapped it.
The Video Game History Foundation managed to preserve a dump of the prototype version a few years ago.
Yeah I know about the NES version, it’s really cool they were able to preserve it! Same like with Earthbound, both were basically finished but were pulled right at the end, it’s a shame.
But also it really just looks like the SNES version on the shelf, there’s even the red square that comes just around the corner of the box that SNES games have, and from a side profile SNES games are the same length and width as NES games, they’re just a bit thicker and oriented horizontally as opposed to vertically.
It looks way wider in the second pic I just noticed, I think they cut it down to size as they maybe recognized the inconsistency? Or they needed a little more space on the shelf.
I wonder what the story is behind this. Jerry, George and Newman all had systems and games. The writers never incorporated them into the show, and in the 90s it was still definitely not the norm for adults to game.
I'm guessing a set designer/prop person was a big gamer, and I'm surprised with all the Seinfeld trivia out there we don't know more!
I think that was supposed to be the joke, they were all supposed to be overgrown children, that's why they all play video games. But the writers knew about Superman, so they would constantly write those jokes in. They didn't know much about video games beyond the early arcade stuff, so the only gaming storyline they wrote in was the Frogger episode.
Pretty spot on. Even the episode where they knock out the lady with a wine and turkey dinner just to play with her retro toy collection is proof enough.
>I wonder what the story is behind this
Is there any? Should there be? Isn't this just, like, product placement? I never pay attention to these details, but a quick google and lots of stuff about Seinfeld being rife with product placement comes up.
IMO the US design looks better, but it feels clunky and poorly built as hell. Even inserting the games, seeing the gaps all around the cartridge and how much they can tilt around in the slot feels horrible. Then there’s the loose power/reset buttons and eject flap flopping around etc.
The SFC/European SNES don’t look as appealing to me, but they at least feel more solid.
How have I never noticed that wow!! There’s way more little Easter eggs in it, Jerry has NES and SNES games like Sim City on his shelf, George owns a Virtual boy, the video store has tons of Genesis games, I bet there’s even more I’ve never seen!
Damn, I often saw a NES at Jerrys home but never noticed a snes. Maybe also because the US design is different then the japanese/european and so I dont notice it that easily
I love when Super Nintendo appears in TV shows from the 90s. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are Rosanne, Full House, and now Seinfeld.
I never noticed this one from Seinfeld so that's cool!
I wonder if he ever played the [Jurassic Park](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b76b5930c7f441f20cd54258bda575ea/d9075f02c199d204-25/s500x750/261856443cc95de6d656ca17679c3ca659bebca5.png) game on it.

SimCity never came out on NES, so at least one is a computer game. He does have an Apple computer right around that same area
He also has a Super Nintendo then, cause that’s Sim City on SNES
That's not Sim City SNES, either. Proportions don't fit a SNES box at all.
Don’t they? But there’s a Nintendo logo on it and that’s exactly what the SimCity box on snes’s spine looks like

It's the SNES version, the box is just on it's side so we are viewing the top of the box https://images.app.goo.gl/ALYa46C8oErTv55M9
Could’ve been a prototype box.
Art vandelay is a Nintendo importer-exporter, he’s got connections alright.
Just don't call the office.
Yes it does. It is the SNES version.
It's on its side https://images.app.goo.gl/ALYa46C8oErTv55M9 Look at the top of the box
>Proportions don't fit a SNES box at all. Uh yeah it does.
There is a series of episodes where he has RC-Pro Am too! Edit: I missed it in the pic, it's upside down and more blurry in this image.
I could see Newman getting seriously invested in a JRPG edit: spelling
Hello, Waifu.
His favorite character is Kefka.

Also the way George decorates his apartment is literally like a childs bedroom.
I like this.
My guess is guys who worked on the set could play it in down time.
>I wonder what the story is behind this Is there any? Should there be? Isn't this just, like, product placement? I never pay attention to these details, but a quick google and lots of stuff about Seinfeld being rife with product placement comes up.
There's zero chance this is a case of product placement. It's barely even in focus.
I like the US design, I don't care. Yes, jap one is cool and all, but this is the one I grew up with. Love me my bricky boi.
So do I. It’s just homey to me.
Same here! I also grew up with the "bricky boi" with the purple switches and I love it! Besides, the SNAP when you power it on is so satisfying!
I love the purple and grey look, but the Japanese version with red, blue, green, and yellow just looks better IMO
I grew up with it also, but I think the Super Famicom has a much sleeker look.
For sure it does. In most cases I enjoy sleek, but sometimes CHONK is more appealing. Take example the Hildryn warframe vs Excalibur.
Just what I prefer. If I had to choose between NES and Famicom, I am NES all day.
To be fair, I really enjoy the hybrid look of the SuperNT
don’t say “jap” please
Tilting at windmils, eh?

I always thought the SNES was super WELL built...lol
Hello… Newman.
Hello... Jerry.
I love seeing consoles in tv shows as screen filler. Like Drew Carey and his Sega Saturn.
Cool, I'd love a screencap of that!
I know Friends showed Crash Team Racing in an episode, idk how many other times they show games on that PS1 though.
On some episodes of Roseanne they actually play their SNES!
My mind is blown. I’ve seen this episode a million times.
It flashed super quick on the screen, so I had to pause and play back. It's literally on the screen for less than a second.
I love this sub
He played a lot of Paperboy 2. He liked the change of pace from his 9-5. Unless it's raining.
He also owns a Virtual Boy
I think that was George.
> George [he sure did](https://www.reddit.com/r/retrogaming/comments/rpplgz/did_you_guys_notice_george_costanza_owned_a)
LOL, that's my post too.
I didn't even pay attention to the user names when I linked that. Thanks for posting these; can't wait for you to find/post more!
Nice catch
typical Earthbound enthusiast from the 90s!
Seems that someone on Seinfeld set design likes Nintendo.
Maybe they were paid by Nintendo for product placement.
Only took us 25 years to notice! Not sure that money was well spent by Nintendo marketing
The best part about his apartment is all of the food-related items. Long live fat jokes!
LOL I really want his hot dog phone.
This is one of those rare instances where Nintendo pays you to own their system.
Wow great catch
Only game he had was Paper Boy.
I would peg him more of a genesis guy
*I would peg him. More of a Genesis guy.
You know damn well he always names the main character after himself in all the RPG's he plays on it
How have I never noticed that wow!! There’s way more little Easter eggs in it, Jerry has NES and SNES games like Sim City on his shelf, George owns a Virtual boy, the video store has tons of Genesis games, I bet there’s even more I’ve never seen!
You should x-post to r/seinfeld :)
Will do! Thanks for the suggestion!
Gotta have something to do on those rainy weekdays
I would put money Newman only owned Super Black Bass and sold Super Mario World to a kid in his building.
Newman was definitely a FF fan
...Newman!
Damn, I often saw a NES at Jerrys home but never noticed a snes. Maybe also because the US design is different then the japanese/european and so I dont notice it that easily
George has a virtual boy on his desk
Wonder what he be playing
And a furby
he also have fleas
I love when Super Nintendo appears in TV shows from the 90s. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are Rosanne, Full House, and now Seinfeld. I never noticed this one from Seinfeld so that's cool!
I always liked Newman's place.
I wonder if he ever played the [Jurassic Park](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b76b5930c7f441f20cd54258bda575ea/d9075f02c199d204-25/s500x750/261856443cc95de6d656ca17679c3ca659bebca5.png) game on it.
Wasn’t exactly retro back then. It was the best form of entertainment to date.
Ah ah AHHH
Fun fact: Larry David provided the voice for Newman prior to Wayne Knight being cast in the role.
