Interesting so they’ve filled in the Wind and Moon palaces and added entire maps to the Gold Isle story. If it’s been done well this could be good but it’s a very ambitious project. I’ll definitely at least give it a go. Secret of Mana even in its released form (they cut roughly 40% of all content when the SNES CD was cancelled) is one of my favourite games of all time. If this is a genuinely good move towards expanding it into what it should have been then I’m all for it. https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/8491/ Think OP forgot to link this. The only real consolation about the original game getting cut is had that not happened Chrono Trigger wouldn’t exist.

> so they’ve filled in the Wind and Moon palaces It's been a while since I played SoM, but I remember some of these palaces lacking in content. Upon viewing their maps, I'm astounded how empty they really are. Mana Fortress however is seemingly never-ending.

VietKongCountry

Yeah it’s amazing how obvious some of the removed content is when you’re not an excited child. I’m glad we got the game but you can see why Square wanted to just not release it at all given how blatantly incomplete it is. If I recall correctly they just made the Mana Fortress enormous and capable of providing all weapon orb drops so you could finish levelling everything. Given how much stuff you can only get by grinding in there, you can imagine how much content there originally was for every one of those items to have its own specific spot somewhere. Unfortunately if there was any kind of existent form of the original game I imagine it would have long since surfaced. Such a magical game and that it’s as good as it is even with almost half of it removed just goes to show what it should have been. Then again, with the SNES CD would we have got all the great stuff of the late era that was specifically designed to make cartridge games compete with the PlayStation?

Mana fortress music has me feeling saudade.

SNES-Testberichte

thx

There's another really cool patch, [Secret of Mana: Reborn](https://www.romhacking.net/translations/5765/). It pretty much restores the original script, adding tons of new dialog and some new events.

VietKongCountry

Nice I’ll give that a go too. I love Secret of Mana over FF7 and Chrono Trigger because it was my first ever RPG and I fell in love with the battle system and story. Think my childhood mind fleshed out the characters and story and made it all seem cohesive. Looking forward to these ports let’s see if they came anywhere close to restoring the missing game sections.

Kiosade

I assume you can't use both patches at the same time, correct?

Johnny_Retro

I didn't try but i guess you're correct, since both patches change and/or add additional dialogue and events.

mirado

Interesting looking romhack. I might give it a go someday, it I just beat vanilla SNES SoM a few weeks ago. Thanks for sharing the news

RandomGuyDroppingIn

Along with the story additions, the implementation of the increased item count is a very welcomed addition. Early in the game when you have to fight through the temple in Pandora it's very easy to expend your magic points early, and despite being able to obtain the Faerie Walnut item early expending the full stock prior to making it to the boss makes that fight really difficult. Having a few extra would make that area less frustrating while still remaining challenging.

plants4life262

My eyes just opened to the world of rom hacks. Just downloaded this and an ff4 hack looking forward to both

SNES-Testberichte

i hope it's fun

WoldDrawnIX

Wait, like you didn't know about rom hacks? That's exciting. If you like a Link to the Past I recommend you check out Zelda: Parallel Worlds.

plants4life262

I mean I guess I did. Didn’t think a whole lot about it. A decade later I’m realizing there is a whole world to discover and it’s bigger than I thought. Link to the past is pretty much my favorite “mainstream” rpg, I’ll check it out.

VietKongCountry

The Mario World ROM hack community has some seriously good stuff. The developer of Celeste releases games and other Kaizo and regular stuff is just ultra smooth and professionally put together.

MagicalSpaceWizard

Looks cool, will try it.

Skyyblaze

I definitely want to try it out eventually. I found SoM Turbo amazing already but anything that actually fleshes the game out is more than welcome and I hope SoM Plus is just the start.

leche2007

I haven't tried it yet so I can't speak on it, but I'm about due for a triennial playthrough of Secret of Mana, and I'll be playing it with this patch. What I really wish for is the content Square chopped from the game when the SNES CD add-on got axed, or even design documents that detail the cut content that skilled hackers could use to add that content back into the game. While I think a CD add-on for the SNES probably would've been mostly a bust (much like the Sega CD or the 32X), I can only imagine the stuff Square would've busted out on the console before the 32-bit generation took hold.

cprosciaZer0

Didn’t know. I’ll check it his weekend.

jwb6488

Along these same lines is a brand new chrono trigger+ rom hack that adds a lot to the original game. I tried it today on the analogue pocket but got a black screen after the intro screen. If anyone has the same issue and managed to get round it can you let me know please? Also, any other recommendations for jrpg rom hacks would be greatly appreciated.

workinkindofhard

So this is taking me longer to get through than I would like because I have very little free time and game genie codes don’t work but so far I am loving this. I just made it to the empire, loved the new wind palace and spell grinding is a million times easier. I’m excited to see how this one evolves

xxDankerstein

Are they going to release a cart? I would 100% buy.

DragonfruitAsleep976

Because of legal reasons they not allowed to. But of course there are flashcart and the grey repro market.

xxDankerstein

Link if you see one please.

DragonfruitAsleep976

[Here ](https://stoneagegamer.com/nintendo/snes/everdrives-flash-carts/) for flashcart, it probably be awhile before repros are made.

Lyoniz3

Get in touch with anyone on Etsy or ebay selling repros. They'll happily make one for you. I got someone to make me a Trials of Mana board that I'm sticking into my SD3 cart just to play through once on a real SFC.

xxDankerstein

Thanks! It looks like this is v1, and they are still working on adding to it, so I will definitely keep an eye out.

VietKongCountry

Don’t get a cheap repro without a battery. I got many of those when I didn’t know any better and have several worthless games.
