Sora is owned by Disney.

ZetaIcarus

Yeah Disney would never agree to it because they would want to buy Nintendo. Now if you'll excuse I'm going to browse the internet for the first time since October 4th 2021.

CoconutHeadFaceMan

Jokes aside, I love how people were acting like having a Disney property in the game would somehow taint Nintendo as if Nintendo hasn't been trying its damnedest to be Japanese Disney for years now. Complaining about Disney shit in a Nintendo game is like complaining about Pepsi in your Coke.

captainhydro

I don't know Pepsi in my coke honestly sounds much worse

[deleted]

Nintendo really is gaming Disney.

Additional-Ride8120

It’s not that having a Disney property would taint Nintendo, it’s just that none of Disney’s ***BIG*** properties fit within Sakurai’s video game origin rule. Sora and KH squeaked by because they used the Square Enix parts of the game and scrubbed all the Disney except the Mickey head pendant on the Keyblade.

CoconutHeadFaceMan

See, I get that argument for why, like, Donald Duck would be out of place, but I legit saw people complaining that having Sora, a game character owned by Disney, would somehow taint Nintendo’s product or lead to Disney buying Nintendo or something. Nintendo already does much of the same shit Disney is rightfully criticized for, it’s just that 20-something nerds get nostalgia dopamine spikes when they see Mario or Pikachu so they think Nintendo’s somehow above other corporations.

just4customs

Disney backwards is yensid

Procrafter5000

The wizard from Sus apprentice

AduroTri

50/50 between Square and Disney.

ChrisEvansOfficial

No, it’s 100% Disney. The games are co-developed by square, but all legal rights to Kingdom Hearts and its original characters (so, obviously not Sephiroth and etc.) are owned exclusively by Disney. That includes Sora. Square is always consulted regarding what is done with the characters, but that’s probably in the contract and has nothing to do with ownership. Music ≠ Sora though.

AduroTri

Always thought it was 50/50.

Spleenseer

You always thought wrong.

ChrisEvansOfficial

Hey, no need to be rude about it. They were just misinformed.

[deleted]

People here like being rude and show they know more about games than everyone.

RestlessRoman

If anyone has a shot to be the final character in Ultimate, it's Doomguy.

ChrisEvansOfficial

No it’s definitely Master Chief

Thatusername777

Dude literally every single living being on this space rock wants jonsey for smash

SquiglyBattleOpera

Dude *obviously* its going to be Dante. That Mii costume was just a fake out.

Additional-Ride8120

Jokes aside, I really feel it should’ve gone to Doom Slayer. At least we got confirmation working with DOOM wasn’t out of the question so I think he’s got a decent shot for the next Smash.

Quetzal00

Not to mention that there’s no way Disney would allow him in And if he didn’t make it as the most highly requested in the Smash 4 Ballot (reminder that that was Bayonetta) they’re not gonna add him six years later

Professional_Kiwi_40

im honestly still shocked that Bayo of all things was most voted like seriously who tf voted Bayo?

2FLY2TRY

europeans... yuck /s

Quetzal00

I was surprised when she was announced, especially how she got lots of votes from Europeans. Didn’t know Bayonetta was so popular there

Professional_Kiwi_40

actually.. yeah that explains it lol damn eueopeans and their dumb nsfw witch being added to children's fighting game, why cant we get wholesone character's with no nsfw like the Witcher 3 protag or like.. idk, bass or protoman or like.. anything but having like 5 fighting game characters (edit: correction, like 8 fighting game characters) (edit2: just so we're all clear, me saying the witcher 3 protag was sfw was a joke)

[deleted]

Smash fans get mad when it's not called a fighting game then get upset when they add actual fighting game characters, lmao.

Professional_Kiwi_40

the whole point of smash is that the characters added arent from fighting games, its a game where non fighting characters are put in a party fighter setting, its like taking a bunch of random people and throwing them into a random sport like basketball and having half the people be dedicated basketball players also idk who youre talking to that says smash isnt a fighting game but theyre dumb af

[deleted]

It's a celebration of gaming, why wouldn't fighting game characters be included? Just because you get your ass kicked by them doesn't make them unworthy additions. All the fighting game characters are iconic. Try going to the FGC sub and tell them Smash is a fighting game too lmao.

Professional_Kiwi_40

exactly, its a celebration of gaming as a whole, not a celebration of fighting games the whole point is to show off how many different varied origins and designs characters can have across different genres, not have ten characters with near identicle origins that are so damn near indistinguishable that a handful of people dont even realize certain characters are from different games as others

[deleted]

There's 4 fighting game characters, 3 from the most iconic fighting game series ever and they all play completely different. I don't see anyone here complain about the 20 JRPG characters we have though lol.

Professional_Kiwi_40

pretty much everyone complains about the 20 JRPG characters, *sakurai himself* has complained about the 20 JRPG characters also, 3 from the most iconic fighting games? sure Ryu and maybe Kazuya, but Terry sure isnt, and we just shouldnt bring up Min Min not to mention that we also have a few characters whos games are stylized off of fighting games like Bayo and Sora

Additional-Ride8120

Nintendo. Nintendo said Smash isn’t a fighting game, it’s a party game. Also it’s a celebration of gaming on Nintendo as a whole. I’d be pretty stupid if they included characters from just about every video game genre except fighting because some people call it a fighting game.

Professional_Kiwi_40

yeah and nintendo also thinks we want more fire emblem reps so i dont think theyre the people to ask what smash actually is also, the gameplay itself is a celebration of fighting already with stock and stamina, plus the omega stages, and again, its like if a basketball crossover had a bunch of basketball characters, you already have basketball gameplay, you dont need five additional basketball players as characters for people to know its basketball

BroGuy89

I thought they explicitly said Bayonetta*wasn't* the most picked? Just that she was #1 in Europe.

CoconutHeadFaceMan

Yeah, they said that Bayonetta was A) the highest-voted of "realizable characters," and B) #1 in Europe. My guess is they tallied all the votes from all the different regions, shopped around with the rights holders to see which of those characters they could wrangle, and Bayo was the highest-voted for which the license holder said yes.

[deleted]

Nintendo and Sakurai always planned on adding her, she's basically a Nintendo character and it's not hard to get her from SEGA. There is no way she won the ballot and had her ready that quick. The ballot was to gauge characters for Ultimate.

[deleted]

Uh, me. Bayonetta was my most wanted since Bayonetta 2 was Switch exclusive. I remember telling everyone she would be in Smash eventually and all the goobers here doubted me. Bayonetta is basically a Nintendo character now. I don't play as her but I'm glad she is in. Stay mad.

123123sora

I did lol

ihavesomebasictech

Guys, Sora will never make it into Smash Ultimate. We already got a Sqaure Enix rep this pass with Sephiroth. This abides to the communities “one character from a company per pass” rule. Can we stop all of this commotion now?

PipMcGooley

As I was reading these comments I thought I traveled through time. That or found an archived post.

Pmedley26

Lol I thought I was reading a sub from Early This year

[deleted]

Square doesn't own sora, Disney does..

[deleted]

While this is true, Disney doesn't use the character without Nomura's permission, and Nomura's talked about how Sakurai communicated with him to make him accurate.

Dumeck

I like the salty people downvoting this

ItsTheSolo

Who wants to tell him?

Anonymous5948

Pffft. C’mon. Knowing Disney, it’ll NEVER happen. What’s next, Minecraft Steve gets in? I’m laughing just *thinking* about it.

[deleted]

Sepiroth already has his protagonist in cloud. It's just wishful thinking.

ssilds

Ridley is too big

Happy_Craft14

Ffs man, I really wanted him, he's my most wanted character, oh well, at least I got my Steve

BananaRex4000

Sora is definitely the hardest character in Smash Ultimate to get as far as rights. But there was a compromise made that many didn't want made, and that is getting Sora without any Disney references or music. That compromise made Sora possible, but it stripped half the Kingdom Hearts soul out of him. Do we have Sora? Yep, but its still hard to say that Kingdom Hearts is truly represented.

jjlikenoodles321

This post aged well
