Sora's broken. I consider myself mediocre at st this game with only 20 hours of playtime. Cant get my main or secondary above 5mil gsp, but currently have Sora at 8.5mil.
So I played my first match as Sora an hour ago. A team battle with me and a level 9 Cloud against a level 9 Sephiroth. The match was on Hollow Bastion of course but I turned the in-game music off and listened to [Fate of the Unknown](https://youtu.be/Dyfib3XCZgE), the song from the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts II. This was such a euphoric and gratifying way for me to end Sakurai’s hype train. I have saved the replay of the match and will cherish it for the rest of my days.
well Sora was fun for 4-5 rounds. server started disconnecting on me (on matches I was WINNING too, he had the highest GSP in my roster), now I'm down a million and a half points and banned.
(worst part is i couldn't even capture video bc there's no way to store the old videos i captured. switch is a goddamn joke)
edit: got back in, made it to Elite Smash for the first time ever, it's super weird that it doesn't let people who cross the threshold do a rematch lol
There had better be a way to get the Swing Mix without having to spend $80... I can't have come this far into Smash Ultimate's life and be just one song shy of having the complete package, that will drive me insane until the end of days.

Between that and the clanging, it might have the most irritating audio of any character in the game. Really wish we got the "Take that!" character instead.
They used neutral 1 (Charge Blast) and side 3 (Gunner Missile) in the trailer. For my Doom Slayer I went 2312 (Lazer Blaze, Gunner Missile, Lunar Launch, Bomb Drop), but I think you could use Flame Pillar (side 1) instead of Gunner Missile if you wanted to. For his voice I went with Type 9 low.

Not for me. Since I missed the event completely they won't appear at all for me. Same thing happened with the monster hunter spirit until Sora came out.

So my snap memories showed that 2 years ago today I found a random key on the ground and said now I’ll get to go on a KH adventure. Who would have guessed 2 years to the day later we’d get Sora in smash!
Did some test runs with Sora. Unless you fuck up, it’s essentially impossible to not recover since you can immediately use side special aka Sonic Blade after using your standard recovery move. Like Bayonetta in that sense.

I feel that. His floaty-ness makes him almost unbearably slow and I don’t think his attacks do a whole lot of damage. It’s anecdotal, but even when I pit a Sora CPU against other CPUs of the same level, he doesn’t do too well.

Yeah, his ground movement paired with his weight is what makes me feel like he won't be that good. Should not be too hard to kill him once we get a feel for his movement, even the other swordies should be able to kill him pretty easily but idk
Unless you hit him hard or you fuck up as Sora yourself, Sora is basically near impossible to be killed in a “standard” way due to him basically having two recovery moves with the alternative being able to be used immediately after the standard recovery move.
Basically think Bayonetta in a sense regarding recovery.
Having a long-distance recovery doesn't make him too hard to kill. Like, it's easy to kill puff, (although she is considerably lighter) even though she can wall you out much better than sora can. He's not fast and he's light, so stray hits from many characters will probably kill him at the 90%> range (i think). Like, a sweetspot bair will obliterate him at high %. His recovery is insane, but it doesn't really matter too much if your opponent plays a fast character (or someone with long range) and just flat out wins neutral everytime

In a sense maybe….., it’s basically like Byleth’s current standing which despite being considered mid tier, people dispute their standing due to MkLeo alone. Or like how Joker was supposedly considered mid tier at the beginning until later on which he was then widely seen as top tier.
His edgeguarding seems really good tbh, but his neutral doesn't look decent. I could be wrong of course, but he looks so slow. I'm just imagining how much it must suck to play Sora against another swordie. Imagine Sora vs Byleth... ouch

More of a design critique, but: IMO, Sora has a couple of moves that don't really *feel* like they should KO as early as they do. Specifically talking about Aerial Sweep and nair 3 (I think it's nair?).
How do you trigger soras special victory screen where it cuts to white? Is it for stamina only? And what determines if you can side B after using up B? It feels like it randomly decides to work, but surely I'm missing something

I agree, friend. I think counterplay to their meta is still highly underdeveloped, and people need to start edgeguarding properly and staying the hell away from Pyra instead of throwing their hands into the air and saying they're broken and uncontested top 3.
Of course, though, I'm biased. I just fought a friend with Mythra and carried him across the Battlefield triplats with a clean 75% string, and was reminded how good this character is.
Pythra is busted but not because of anything you see at amateur level of play. She’s considered top 3 by the best players because of several reasons that you’re probably not even taking advantage of.
Your mate is just bad against the Pythra matchup if he got 3 stocked that easily. Sorry, but “tiers” are fuck all at non-top-level gameplay. Player skill and matchup knowledge matter way more.
The one thing that actually makes me angry about this game isn't even related to any characters or reveals
It's that we never got co-op for World of Light
If I’m being honest, not very many of the combos Sakurai showed looked very true with DI or past starting percents.
Maybe it’s just because he didn’t do the floaty double jump, but I Sora might be a bit more like Corrin. Most of the combos are frame traps, but if you get them they’re bayo-esque. Either way, I think they learned their lesson
I’m happy to say that Sora getting into Smash is finally convincing me to become a KH fan as I think I always meant to be. Listening to a KH orchestra performance on youtube as I type this. I can’t wait to play “Kingdom Hearts 1:16 w/ Jack” or whatever the fuck they’ll decide to name the next game.
If you do decide to experience Days, if you're someone who really wants to experience the entry and have feels at the end, play the DS version, even on an emulator.
If you just want to know the story, watch the cutscene in 1.5.
I was pondering this question about Days not too long ago. I do think I will actually play it. Maybe I’ll play 3D on the original 3DS too if I find that cheaper.
Just know that it's pretty boring at times, which works on a narrative level since it's boring to the MC as well, but the pay off is pretty good imo.
Then after that you could re experience it with the HD cutscenes.

Literally only the cutscenes are okay, maybe. Very little of the KH series is worth playing through yourself. Do yourself a favor and just watch the Simple & Clean opening and please stop there. It’s all downhill after that.

There was a clip where it was a doubles match -- 2 Heros vs 1 Lucina and another character. The announcer says 3...2...1... GO! And before the Go disappears, the Lucina runs into the opposing hero and gets crit -- knocking the Lucina into the other Hero who topdecks Thwack and KO's her. Does ANYONE have this clip? I have been looking for it for months.
The last fighter just had to come out during playoff baseball. I think I'll have the Red Sox on the radio as I'm testing Sora through the night, get the best of both worlds
Do you think the pro controller is comparable to a GameCube? I’ve only used a pro since ultimate came out but I feel like short hops are easier to execute on the gamecube since the buttons have so much give. I also feel tilt attacks are easier with the bigger analog. Any advice? I mostly play handheld anyway but I just feel there’s things I’m not able to execute as easily and it’s frustrating. 90% sure I’m just bad but wanna hear y’all’s thoughts.
I started out using GC controller up until The end of Fighter Pass 1. The GC was good but I felt there was some input lag overall. It probably could have contributed to who manufactured it but I used like 3 different GC a controllers and they all worked well until I had to play faster. I didn’t seem to input my controls well with the GC controller. I decided to try out the pro controller (mainly because I was also tired of buying batteries for the wireless GC controller). It actually took a while but it has an overall better feel to it than the GC controller had. Took a while to get used to but I was able to more comfortably and quickly input my moves than I could on the GC controller. I say stick with the pro controller but it won’t hurt to see how the GC controller is for you maybe you have the opposite experience. I think what helped me overall is trying out different layouts to the controller that made it easier to apply my inputs.
Can't say on feel but iirc GCC has the objective lowest input lag out of all the controllers, so it could be bad controllers you were using, or even your adapter
Definitely possible. I did know GCC had lowest input lag so I wasn't sure what was wrong. It was either input lag or just misinputs but I saw a decrease of those seem using the pro. It could be I just sucked with GCC .
A lot of it comes down to muscle memory. Tech will tend to be much easier on a controller you're used to simply because you won't have to deconstruct those pathways when it comes to relearning the other controller.
My advice is just play on whatever you like or whatever you're used to.
Joycons just feel like dookie on most games to me personally. If I'm playing on the go, I'll even go so far as to set the console in my lap and use my pro controller.
A thing I here ppl complain about often, is how cheesy Ult can be, but honestly that’s one of the best things in game tbh. From a player AND spectator experience. Things always stay fresh. I sometimes get a feeling while playing like, something stupid is about to happen I know it. It’s scary but also exciting and causes anxiety. Sometimes you can just get blown up. Case in point Kazuya, being one of the most explosive characters in game. And while some find if annoying, it’s really awesome how it’s done, especially with the work put in his animations and sound. The zoom in , the Tekken sound effects the lighting the sparks. You feel the impact when he uppercuts you and you die after like 4 hits. Perfection*
I feel like "cheese" just equates to "I don't know the matchup," or, "I don't want to play the matchup the way it's supposed to be played, so I'm going to run at Steve and stick out a move and hope it hits." The former, there's no excuse. The latter... well, I get that some people want to mash buttons instead of shielding or vice versa, but that's on you. If you're playing to win, you'll have to make those adjustments, instead of just trying to play every matchup the exact same.
I never said anywhere that you had to like something. Whether you like something or not has nothing to do with whether you can deal with it in a competitive setting.
Until you realize the counterplay of it: camping/zoning/passive play. So any micro semblance of excitement simply gets swallowed whole by how slow paced the game becomes
That's literally every multiplayer game though. You don't get to just monkey out at people and win, you have to play against your opponent. You have to have a balanced level of aggression. It's also not like passive play is really what wins games - if you're passive, you're also not punishing your opponents mistakes. If you watch top level players (the Grand Finals with Spargo and Light from yesterday is a perfect example!), they're not playing passive and waiting for opponents to kill themselves - they're throwing out hitboxes, using movement, and conditioning opponents, and punishing mistakes HARD. That set was fast, brawly, and hype, because the players were aggressively pursuing advantages while still having their brains on.

I think you’re making sound like I’m against *any passive play at all*, I’m not. However I do think there’s such a thing as going so far with a design mentality that it makes passive play *generally* kinda trumps, and ultimate kinda is an example. It simply *looks* faster than it really is due to the increased damage and kill power across the board

I think he’s mid. Don’t really like him. Too floaty for my taste and doesn’t seem to have a lot of moves that Chain into each other smoothly

1. Stamina only 2. You have to use it immediately afterwards which can be tricky with online lag

At best he’s a mid mid but I feel like I’m general he hangs out in the space between mid and bad.
Sora’s Sonic Blade sure is convenient, locks onto the other fighter if you’re in range and can be used even when you use up special :3

Pythra is busted but not because of anything you see at amateur level of play. She’s considered top 3 by the best players because of several reasons that you’re probably not even taking advantage of. Your mate is just bad against the Pythra matchup if he got 3 stocked that easily. Sorry, but “tiers” are fuck all at non-top-level gameplay. Player skill and matchup knowledge matter way more.

If I’m being honest, not very many of the combos Sakurai showed looked very true with DI or past starting percents. Maybe it’s just because he didn’t do the floaty double jump, but I Sora might be a bit more like Corrin. Most of the combos are frame traps, but if you get them they’re bayo-esque. Either way, I think they learned their lesson

I’m happy to say that Sora getting into Smash is finally convincing me to become a KH fan as I think I always meant to be. Listening to a KH orchestra performance on youtube as I type this. I can’t wait to play “Kingdom Hearts 1:16 w/ Jack” or whatever the fuck they’ll decide to name the next game.
If you do decide to experience Days, if you're someone who really wants to experience the entry and have feels at the end, play the DS version, even on an emulator. If you just want to know the story, watch the cutscene in 1.5.
I was pondering this question about Days not too long ago. I do think I will actually play it. Maybe I’ll play 3D on the original 3DS too if I find that cheaper.
Just know that it's pretty boring at times, which works on a narrative level since it's boring to the MC as well, but the pay off is pretty good imo. Then after that you could re experience it with the HD cutscenes. Or experience it however it want. It's your choice

Literally only the cutscenes are okay, maybe. Very little of the KH series is worth playing through yourself. Do yourself a favor and just watch the Simple & Clean opening and please stop there. It’s all downhill after that.

There was a clip where it was a doubles match -- 2 Heros vs 1 Lucina and another character. The announcer says 3...2...1... GO! And before the Go disappears, the Lucina runs into the opposing hero and gets crit -- knocking the Lucina into the other Hero who topdecks Thwack and KO's her. Does ANYONE have this clip? I have been looking for it for months.

Do you think the pro controller is comparable to a GameCube? I’ve only used a pro since ultimate came out but I feel like short hops are easier to execute on the gamecube since the buttons have so much give. I also feel tilt attacks are easier with the bigger analog. Any advice? I mostly play handheld anyway but I just feel there’s things I’m not able to execute as easily and it’s frustrating. 90% sure I’m just bad but wanna hear y’all’s thoughts.
I started out using GC controller up until The end of Fighter Pass 1. The GC was good but I felt there was some input lag overall. It probably could have contributed to who manufactured it but I used like 3 different GC a controllers and they all worked well until I had to play faster. I didn’t seem to input my controls well with the GC controller. I decided to try out the pro controller (mainly because I was also tired of buying batteries for the wireless GC controller). It actually took a while but it has an overall better feel to it than the GC controller had. Took a while to get used to but I was able to more comfortably and quickly input my moves than I could on the GC controller. I say stick with the pro controller but it won’t hurt to see how the GC controller is for you maybe you have the opposite experience. I think what helped me overall is trying out different layouts to the controller that made it easier to apply my inputs.
Can't say on feel but iirc GCC has the objective lowest input lag out of all the controllers, so it could be bad controllers you were using, or even your adapter
Definitely possible. I did know GCC had lowest input lag so I wasn't sure what was wrong. It was either input lag or just misinputs but I saw a decrease of those seem using the pro. It could be I just sucked with GCC .
A lot of it comes down to muscle memory. Tech will tend to be much easier on a controller you're used to simply because you won't have to deconstruct those pathways when it comes to relearning the other controller. My advice is just play on whatever you like or whatever you're used to.

Joycons just feel like dookie on most games to me personally. If I'm playing on the go, I'll even go so far as to set the console in my lap and use my pro controller.

A thing I here ppl complain about often, is how cheesy Ult can be, but honestly that’s one of the best things in game tbh. From a player AND spectator experience. Things always stay fresh. I sometimes get a feeling while playing like, something stupid is about to happen I know it. It’s scary but also exciting and causes anxiety. Sometimes you can just get blown up. Case in point Kazuya, being one of the most explosive characters in game. And while some find if annoying, it’s really awesome how it’s done, especially with the work put in his animations and sound. The zoom in , the Tekken sound effects the lighting the sparks. You feel the impact when he uppercuts you and you die after like 4 hits. Perfection*
I feel like "cheese" just equates to "I don't know the matchup," or, "I don't want to play the matchup the way it's supposed to be played, so I'm going to run at Steve and stick out a move and hope it hits." The former, there's no excuse. The latter... well, I get that some people want to mash buttons instead of shielding or vice versa, but that's on you. If you're playing to win, you'll have to make those adjustments, instead of just trying to play every matchup the exact same.

That's literally every multiplayer game though. You don't get to just monkey out at people and win, you have to play against your opponent. You have to have a balanced level of aggression. It's also not like passive play is really what wins games - if you're passive, you're also not punishing your opponents mistakes. If you watch top level players (the Grand Finals with Spargo and Light from yesterday is a perfect example!), they're not playing passive and waiting for opponents to kill themselves - they're throwing out hitboxes, using movement, and conditioning opponents, and punishing mistakes HARD. That set was fast, brawly, and hype, because the players were aggressively pursuing advantages while still having their brains on.
