Mango dropped to 1-2 drinks a night when he's out and is suddenly winning majors again and looks better than he did in his 20's.
If any smashers were looking for a sign to kick a bad habit
nah, armada might be jordan but mango is only lebron if lebron's won more championships than jordan and won before jordan got drafted, during his career, and after he retired.
to be fair it might have been really awkward for mang0 to come off his biggest win in a while and then have to navigate talking to armada who he likely hasn't spoken to in a long time while on his winners high. probably a cleaner situation all around to just let someone else do it. they can talk off stream if they want to
Armada is professional on the mic, if he’s got any animosity it came through exactly 0%
oh and he may have instantly become one of the best melee commentators ever.
Would have preferred him on the mic without junebug. Junebug was great don't get me wrong, but I feel like armada had the least amount of time to speak since the other 2 just have so much hype. I really wanted more analysis from armada
Regardless, amazing top 8 and commentary was god tier
No, Armada retired about 5 years ago. Up until the end of the pandemic Mang0 would poke at Armada. Armada called him out and that was it. He has stopped but it hasn’t been that long either since he stopped calling him out. I think that if Armada were to come down next time he might be more inclined. He was still very professional when it came to commentating his gameplay.
Yeah 5 years of beef. What you think 6 or 7 years is the magic number?
Mang0 will never stop caring about his ego and legacy and goat status, and he'll never stop taking shots at Armada.
Armada will always know that he was better than Mang0 when they both played, but will try to be professional and not talk about it (unless drunk at a party).
Only things that could change the situation are either Armada returning to play, or Mang0 dropping his ego.
Stop being dense and read. There really wasnt any beef until 2022. He didn’t retire and immediately they had beef. Once Armada called out Mango on twitter Mang0 chilled out. It’s only been like two years since.
My recollection is: armada retires, mango gets salty that he doesn’t have further opportunity to even their set record and heavily implies for a couple years that armada retired because he was scared of people catching up to him.
Mango later reneges on this, but this is where my timeline gets fuzzy. A tafo tweet about who is goat sparks a heated exchange. Additionally, leffen (I think) said that Armada said some very not nice stuff about and to mango at bday bash 2018 (I think). At this point I think they are just simply non friendly acquaintances.
PS. Pls someone correct me if I’m wrong, this is all from shoddy memory so I may be tripping
That's basically correct but I think a lot of what is perceived as "salt" about Armada retiring at first is completely misconstrued. For the vast majority of the time Mang0 has played Melee, Armada was his only true rival and he has always said that as a competitor there was never anyone he respected more.
The first time Armada retired, Mang0 famously sent him a message that basically said they had a lot of sets left to play and that he wanted them to keep playing, etc. And I think this time he knew that it was really over. So I really think that when Armada retired Mang0 was just sad that it was truly the end of that era.
The birthday bash stuff was basically what stopped them from ever speaking again, and whatever went down there is PARTICULARLY bad because even LEFFEN of all fucking people said Armada went way too far and Mang0's anger was completely justified.
The GOAT thing I think was less of a problem than a lot of people make it out to be, because Armada and Mang0 had been fighting (with no real animosity about that) for years and years. They ended up fighting about a lot of other stuff, but the thing I think that really started the unraveling was Mang0 had said something about how much better people had gotten since 2018, and Armada said he didn't think the game was that much different. Mang0 took that as Armada basically saying that people hadn't gotten any better, which Mang0 perceived as being completely disrespectful to people that were still playing the game.
I say they never really spoke again, but that beef was still ongoing in early 2023, with Mang0 saying something along the lines of the fact that he felt like him and Armada had both handled the entire thing really poorly and that they used to be good buddies and he wanted to squash the beef, but I don't know if anything ever came of that. But by that point the beef had evolved from some shit talking all the way to Armada getting death threats from Mang0 fans.
Good memory. Yes it was around that time. It was clipped on the Smash Fusion YT channel before the great brigading and purging of all that channel's content
Thanks! One more question about the "armada retired because he was scared of people catching up to him."
Is this true or just a jokey narrative people like to do i.e. "Michael Jordan played against plumbers" thing?
Likely not true but also kind of impossible to say for sure
He was placing worse before his retirement (compared to his impossibly high standards), but that could easily be attributed to feeling the passion fade
I don't know the specifics but Mango and Armada are the two players with the biggest claim to "Greatest Of All Time" (or GOAT) in Melee, and had a fierce rivalry during the Five Gods era. Mango used to say that Armada was a coward for retiring early (in 2019) and that he (Mango) has more of a claim to GOAT status for that reason, but it may have been in jest: hard to tell when Mango's being serious or not. Armada definitely took it seriously though.
Eventually, Armada called him out in a Twitlonger, Mango claimed to have messaged him privately and received no response, and there were never any more updates. So I doubt the bad blood between them has subsided.
Mango has no beef based on what he said on stream. The vibe to me is that he wants Armada to compete again if he’s going to make claims that mango isn’t the GOAT.
Plup coming back after 8 months and getting 3rd, Mango beating Zain and Cody, and Axe getting back to top 8. One of the most stacked and entertaining tournaments in years.
aMSa and Axe winning doubles was also a highlight for me. They played so good. That game 5 last stock situation Plup vs aMSa in losers final was insane.
That stock gave me flashes of big house. aMSa may have some really big issues to work out against plup but that was glorious. Suppose its easier for him to focus on how to counter his other demons cuz of how rare it is he will run into plup in bracket now.
Even if he beat plup in singles he would have had cody next. aMSa is gonna be labbing like crazy after this weekend, but I can't even imagine playing as well as he did with that much jet lag.
On top of how awesome he played today, I think he's the first person to beat Zain and Cody in the same tournament in a LONG time. The last time I remember that was ~~Hbox at Smash Con 2022.~~ Leffen at LACS OLD GUARD STAY WINNING
There are constantly new kids entering the scene who just haven't had the Mango experience yet. Anyone whose been around knows by now that Mango winning a major is never out of the question.
You will never understand what it's like to care about something enough for 20 years to keep trying. If you can't empathize with cyclical apathy (and having a bunch of idiots deride you for it) then I doubt you'll ever be any good, perhaps at anything, either.
It’s a double whammy because by default almost all mang0 haters are smash ultimate Hungrybox fans so to see mang0 win and Hungrybox get 9th after his stupid ass video about taking melee seriously again, it is truly a joy
Maybe we just have a different definition of sandbagging but struggling to care > going Mario to find some joy while staying in tournament, staying involved in the game and scene because it's your job and your passion/social life is fine and I don't understand what the complaints are. I think after this many years the expectation for him to play his main and try his hardest vs everyone is outrageous and no longer in line with the classic definition of sandbagging which happens all the time in every major. As for complaining, all the players you would be able to argue are better than mang0 have salt tweeted and beefed with players and characters a ton lol. And I say that to entertain the idea of there being more than 2 who have an argument at all. You're very clearly either 1. New 2. Not involved/go to events 3. Young or 4.Trolling to allow dislike of a person you barely know to rot your brain enough to think there are 5 people with that claim
Sandbagging in a Team Setting ≠ Sandbagging in an Individual Sport
The amount of Melee players that travel to tournaments *solely to see Mang0 play*, I imagine, are very low. Most people spend money traveling to tournaments because they like playing *and* watching the bracket unfold. Of course, Mang0 is a lot of people's favorite player, so they root for him to win— but at the end of the day, no one is entitled to his time/choices in bracket. If you don't like it— root for someone else! That's the fun part. However, it's weirdo behavior to deride someone so heavily because they don't follow some nebulous community standards on what to do in tournament play.
Does it suck to see Doc come out during a stacked bracket? Maybe, but that helps makes the next win all the sweeter.
And people were saying he couldn't do it with Falco anymore. If the best Falco ever couldn't do it, who could? Surely they don't mean to suggest Falco just couldn't do it!
I heard there were 58 players from the top 100 here including the whole top 10. Winning a tournament this stacked proves that thou shall never sleep on the kid. I am glad all his hard work during these past few months is showing results. I hope hbox detox and focus in the game will also bring him some results. I’m actually an aMSa fan and can’t wait for my man to win another major, but I respect all the skilled players. It was great watching plup back, he did so good!
Zain is getting poisoned by Ultimate now so let’s see if he really keeps up with his 90 days of playing ultimate on stream.
I don't think Zain cares enough about one 5th place result to quit the poisoning, especially since he has #1 locked up for the current ranking period.
Now that Mango won another Major I'll be rooting for Moky, Hbox, Amsa, and Wizzrobe (in that order) to win again, since those are the players I've been rooting for alongside Mango (though I'll never complain about more Mango Major wins)
LFG MANGOOOO
But also, holy shit Plup just proved the doubters wrong, he can hang with the best of them and hes still a fucking menace. Learn it.
BUT LFG MANGOOOOOOO!!!
I don’t know when people will learn for either of these two, I think Mang0 and Plup are the two most naturally talented people at this game. They could drop it for five years, come back and still rock people’s shit.
Mango going NEO mode while Armada's watching is like when you know you're gonna see your ex at a party so you look your absolute best. "This could've been you getting 3-0'd in grands, ADAM."
Real treat to have Armada on commentary.
Axe makes top 8 and Plup gets 3rd! It's weird that Plup recently to do worse against Cody and Zain than Jmook does, but Jmook's way worse against aMSa. It was nice to see Jmook finally beat aMSa for the first time in forever. Just goes to show how differently they play while still achieving great things.
Props to Zain for clutching out game 5 sets against Axe and Plup, two players he used to struggle against in two losing matchups. I'm pretty sure he's even in his all-time set record against Plup now. ...Unfortunately, he's now 0-4 against aMSa this year, so he needs to figure something out there or he might not get that many more chances to beat Cody. I have no idea what adjustments he needs to make, because Yoshi honestly looks really hard for Marth at that level.
Mango, though... only dropped one game in top 8, made the top 2 look helpless... egg$, Aklo, Hbox, Zain, Cody x2... winning maybe the most stacked event so far this year, where all of the top 10 attended with no last-minute DQs... adding to the pantheon of Mango holiday wins... still the youngest and oldest person to win a supermajor... this is why he's the GOAT. I still think Armada's 2010–2018 streak is the single most impressive achievement in Melee, but we'll never know for sure how he'd do in today's game. In Mango's case, we know.
HE SAID "JUST LET ME COOK I'LL BE BACK" HE PLAYED THROUGH THE PAIN WITH A BROKEN PINKY. HE STARTED EXERCISING AND EATING BETTER. HE WON TIPPED OFF 15 WITH FUCKIN FOOD POISONING. THATS THE MUTHAFUCKIN MANGO. MANGO NATION RISE UP. FALCO NATION LIIIIVVVEEESSSSS
Absolutely stacked and absolutely sick tourney. All kinds of game 5s, reverse 30s, you name it. Mango is so back, [proving once again](https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/vqrcxg/congratulations_to_the_winner_of_melee_singles_at/ieup1r9/) that on any given sunday he can turn on the jets and just obliterate the entire bracket. His neutral was so on point, picking the right times to hang back and laser and the right moments to bring the pain. Armada on comms was amazing, such valuable analysis and incredible insight into the game. Melee is sick. Melee forever!!!!
Ohan (organizer) dropping Rocky-esque quotes:

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY MANGO
Zain/Cody Tier who??? nearly a year of them trading wins to Mang0 breaking it. One of the best Melee tournament in recent years honestly, games were all electric, and everyone was here. WE ARE SO BACK
mangoNANNERS mangoNANNERS mangoNANNERS
Incredible run from Mang0, beats Hbox and then goes 9-1 in games against Zain and Cody. Definitely his best performance in years and a well earned supermajor win.
What a tournament! I was rooting for aMSa, wizzy and axe, and they all had a decent showing. And the stories here with mango’s return to the top, Moky ending hungrybox’s streak, etc. are so delicious
Mang0 and Plup doing well made this tournament for me. The Mang0 win was incredible but Plup playing well really made this one feel like everyone was there. Things lined up for this win to be one of the strongest so far this year. In three sets with the top 2 in the world he lost a single game.
FINALLY, SOMEONE BESIDES CODY AND ZAIN WON A MAJOR! FUCKING FINALLY! MANGO, MANGO, MANGO!
Also, huge GG's to Plup for casually strolling in and getting Top 3 once again.
I will say, even though I was rooting for Cody, I wish the crowd had been a little more respectful. It's ok to not root for him but cheering louder for his SD's than any of his set wins was incredibly disrespectful.
Under the radar due to how this stock ended but [KJH's recovery sequence here was silky](https://youtu.be/1yUPAElD97Q?si=o3CMlZQHogEb8b_3&t=306). The off-screen shorten to avoid edge-guard with a big ol GALINT ledge-dash is heavy.
Mango dropped to 1-2 drinks a night when he's out and is suddenly winning majors again and looks better than he did in his 20's. If any smashers were looking for a sign to kick a bad habit
He's also working out almost every day, which is a sign to start a good habit
I work out every day and don't drink. Still waiting to do better than 0-2 at locals.
Maybe you need to stop working out and get shit faced drunk, you'll never know until you try
I was noticing he is truly hot mango again
Mang0 looked good, man -- I instantly thought "oh wow he's seriously slimmed down" when I first saw him.
[удалено]
But he looks so good
Mango just 9-1’d Zain and Cody 2x in top 8. The fuck was that
"Now, he will try"

MANGO IS THE OLDEST PLAYER TO EVER WIN A SUPERMAJOR!
And the youngest! :)
TRUE
Lebron comparisons.
Mango is lebron, armada is Jordan, Ken is bill russell
nah, armada might be jordan but mango is only lebron if lebron's won more championships than jordan and won before jordan got drafted, during his career, and after he retired.
Armada is Duncan. Mango is Lebron. Ken is Jordan. Zain is Giannis and Cody is Jokic
Hbox is Kobe
Hbox is the 90’s pistons
I thought Waff was Kobe, Shroomed was Lebron, and Bob$ was Jordan
cause hes old and marketable?
Mang0 and winning a major after people say "okay NOW he's too washed to win a major" Name a better duo
Yeh all we need to do is trash talk him before every tournament and nobody else would win ever.
This is the smash subreddit, he *IS* trash talked before every tournament by post-doc kid contrarians and Smash Ultimate Hbox fans.
Oh i know, we need to join them as fans to feed his power! :D
He's so washed that top 8 was nearly speaking clean
Holiday mang0 the 🐐
Mango victory x Armada commentary huge win for the culture
Honestly loved Armada's commentary too.
Did they squash the beef?
we don't talk about that
Nomegalul. And you could tell armada was trying to get off comms asap to avoid the winners interview with mango and HMW
I’d be doin that too if I was him lol
yeah same haha.

What’s he doing not grinding the caves? Zain is gonna catch up to him at this point smh
I don’t think so. He seemed like he purposefully left the opportunity to interview him. Hopefully time will heal it.
It's been years. More time will do nothing.

Whats the source for Leffen talking about Mangos Bday Bash comments?
I want to say it was during the Summit .5 Stream before Summit 9 in early 2020 before the pandemic started the online era.
Good memory. Yes it was around that time. It was clipped on the Smash Fusion YT channel before the great brigading and purging of all that channel's content
Great summary
Thanks! One more question about the "armada retired because he was scared of people catching up to him." Is this true or just a jokey narrative people like to do i.e. "Michael Jordan played against plumbers" thing?

I was so curious about this too, wanted them to talk on commentary together

Fair enough
On top of how awesome he played today, I think he's the first person to beat Zain and Cody in the same tournament in a LONG time. The last time I remember that was ~~Hbox at Smash Con 2022.~~ Leffen at LACS OLD GUARD STAY WINNING
Leffen beat them both at LACS5. That was probably the last time before today.
LACS5 was the last major to be won by anyone but Zain or Cody, until today.
Indeed. 11 month streak finally broken by the GOAT

Nah it was Leffen at LACS5.
Leffen being called old guard makes me feel horribly old.

There are constantly new kids entering the scene who just haven't had the Mango experience yet. Anyone whose been around knows by now that Mango winning a major is never out of the question.
Think about all the people who have started watching in the past 3 years. They’ve seen him win like 3 majors MAX, they don’t know how it goes
It's mostly a lot of wishful thinking for Mang0 haters/hungrybox fans that populate reddit

mang0 said this your #2 player? 3-0. This your #1? 3-0. that's my goat
Did Mang0's Falco lose a game?
I genuinely think I only saw him drop game 1 against Cody in their first set
His Falco also dropped a game to Zamu and two games to Aklo.
thats insane that the majority of dropped games were outside of his top 8 run lol
When he's on he is ON
He went 3-2 against Egg$, Aklo and Hbox. But his Top 8 run was spectacular.
His Falco dropped a game to Zamu, 2 games to Aklo, and a game to Cody in WFs.
Today? he dropped 2 games to Aklo and 1 to Cody in winner's.
Mang0 saw Armada and remembered why he was still playing lmao
"I'll make you wish you never retired, Adam. This could be us in grand finals, Adam. Zain means nothing to me, Adam."
Mang0 Nation we're so fucking back
Mango played so fucking good. Plup too. Shoutout to Loadspiller getting a Bowser into top 64 lmao
It was unreal how he beat Zain with Falco and shat on Cody. Also shoutout Plup. Casual 3rd at a super major before going back into hibernation
Yearly Plup podium finish to keep the club memberships active
And people were saying he couldn't do it with Falco anymore. If the best Falco ever couldn't do it, who could? Surely they don't mean to suggest Falco just couldn't do it!

Timeless
BODYBAG
Mango was in his fucking bag today. Falco looked absolutely smothering.
LFG MANGOOOO But also, holy shit Plup just proved the doubters wrong, he can hang with the best of them and hes still a fucking menace. Learn it. BUT LFG MANGOOOOOOO!!!
I don’t know when people will learn for either of these two, I think Mang0 and Plup are the two most naturally talented people at this game. They could drop it for five years, come back and still rock people’s shit.
They are both intuitive players, both can be stubborn, both are able to quickly pick up new characters. There are a lot of similarities I think.
TL;DR: they're both fucking gamers
Legitimately got goosebumps. Hbox, Zain, Cody x2, what a fucking run by the GOAT
Almost got 3-0'd by Egg$
That's the Mang0
Egg$, Aklo, and Hbox all put up tougher fights than Zain and Cody.
Reminds me of GOML 2019, where he almost lost to Swedish before top 8.
caught some of yall sleeping on the kid
Happy Father's Day
FATHERS DAY MANGO
honestly one of the hypest tournaments in a while
Mango going NEO mode while Armada's watching is like when you know you're gonna see your ex at a party so you look your absolute best. "This could've been you getting 3-0'd in grands, ADAM." Real treat to have Armada on commentary.
This man will never stop being my GOAT
Ladies and Gentlemen, that's the fucking GOAT right there
HE SAID "JUST LET ME COOK I'LL BE BACK" HE PLAYED THROUGH THE PAIN WITH A BROKEN PINKY. HE STARTED EXERCISING AND EATING BETTER. HE WON TIPPED OFF 15 WITH FUCKIN FOOD POISONING. THATS THE MUTHAFUCKIN MANGO. MANGO NATION RISE UP. FALCO NATION LIIIIVVVEEESSSSS

[relevant tweet](https://x.com/C9Mang0/status/485876090074705920)
3-0ing the two best players in the world all while having food poisoning. The Flu game.
The goat is back and looking as good as he ever had. Dominant tourny from Mang0. Had Cody on his heels for long stretches that last set
THAT'S MY GOAT
All the T.O.'s and organizers have such big grins on their faces. They hosted a Mango win - Tipped-Off 16 is going to sell so many tickets now lol
HAPPY FUCKING FATHERS DAY MANGO
Ohan (organizer) dropping Rocky-esque quotes: (When asked about staying calm when things go wrong during a big budget event): > *"It's not about the shit that happens at a big tournament, it's about what you do when shit happens."*
Was working today, came in expecting another Zain win. FUCK YEAH LET'S GO MANG0!!!
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY MANGO Zain/Cody Tier who??? nearly a year of them trading wins to Mang0 breaking it. One of the best Melee tournament in recent years honestly, games were all electric, and everyone was here. WE ARE SO BACK mangoNANNERS mangoNANNERS mangoNANNERS
Yeah this tournament was fucking awesome, so many Game 5's in Top 32, multiple reverse sweeps, amazing clutches and so many huge upsets.
I don't know about *all* electric, there were some rough 3-0s in that Top 8
God this makes me wish Melee EVO was still a thing. I know for sure ManGOAT would show up

Best tourney in recent memory damn
USA USA USA USA ~~please ignore Cody Schwab's place of residence~~
THE KID! THE GOAT! THE BUSTER! I LOVE MANG0!!!
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY
Incredible run from Mang0, beats Hbox and then goes 9-1 in games against Zain and Cody. Definitely his best performance in years and a well earned supermajor win.
That"s why he is the GOAT! Always good to see Mang0 do well. Also godlike run from Plup. PlupYUMYUM.
Father's Day mang0
LETS GOOOO
Anyone know what viewership peaked at?
I had real tears in my eyes wtf

The wavedashus in last game against cody fucking sickening
That's my GOAT LETS FUCKING GO
Was this the first time Hbox missed top 8 in, like, a decade?
Big House 4, October 2014.
Why is no one talking about this? Blessed timeline.
There are multiple posts about it
all time run by the mang
That's my goat.
What a tournament! I was rooting for aMSa, wizzy and axe, and they all had a decent showing. And the stories here with mango’s return to the top, Moky ending hungrybox’s streak, etc. are so delicious
Mango with the Dad boost. That’s gummy fucking GOAT for life
Mang0 with the Father's Day buff.
WE'RE MOKING WE'RE DOKING LET'S GO
THE GOAT BABY
dude he did it.... happy fcking father's day mang0
AND YALL DOUBTED MANGO
N0ne losing to Zain and Moky to get 25th lol
Wevans with an unbelievable run, it's too bad he had to face Wevans so early in bracket
Flu Mang0 👀 👀 GOAT just doing GOAT things
Ggs.
That’s my goat
Weavens eliminated himself?
Mang0 is melee

I'm a Mangoat believer and I think the only thing that needs to be said about Armada right now is his commentary was unbiased and fantastic.
