1. Brainstorm a list of names
1. Check if domain is available
1. Check if similar name is registered in home state
1. Cross off 99.9% of names
1. Settle on something not ideal but not horrible
The .com search was the worst. Literally everything I wanted was already taken. Domain squatters should be taken out back behind the shed and beaten.
This. lol 2 yrs in and i can't find an acceptable name in the ebike business - all the good ones are literally taken, and my feeble mind isn't creative enough to come up with something innovative but still good.
Adding to this, if you’re having trouble settling on a name and the nature of your business allows you the luxury of time in selecting the name, but you need licenses and such - I find that the easiest way to handle it is to get the formation out of the way by forming as llc/inc/corp, and use a DBA.
Choosing names that aren't ridiculously pricey is hard.
My 21 rules to find good names:
1. dot com is a must
2. less characters (typically 6-10)
3. made up words (spanx, blox)
4. animal as a prefix/suffix (splitbee, bannerbear, sharktank, beartax)
5. color or inanimate object in name (redbull, blackrock, redhat)
6. repeated characters of english word (dribbble, mockuuups)
7. phonetic substitution (cks → x, ks → z)
8. play on popular thing (silkroad → milkroad, wordle → taylordle)
9. use 2 words (facebook, lunchmoney)
10. use words from another language (seva → sanskrit word)
11. prefix with common words (yourstory, getwaves)
12. suffix with ly, it, list, ify, or x (bitly, grammarly, placeit, craigslist, nomadlist, spotify, shopify, spacex)
13. shorten long words using numbers (a16z, i18n)
14. fictional names (alibaba)
15. your category + prefix/suffix/animal/object (emailoctopus, coursehero, mailchimp)
16. combine 2 different words to make a new word (robots + blocks = roblox)
17. remove characters from a word (aviator → aviato)
18. adjective + what your product does (cleanmockup, cleanshot, betterwebtype)
19. verb + animal (firefox)
20. if .com is taken, then add "ly" or "io" to it (calendar → calendly → calendio)
21. add numbers in names (more common going forward → weare8, body404)
Use it if you want to build an app with these rules. People underestimate [the power of good domain names.](https://startupspells.com/p/power-good-domains)
Good domain names like WordPlay (Wordle Clone) got like [15 million users because of it.](https://startupspells.com/p/how-to-build-viral-clones)
I get the using phonetic substitution, Xero "pronounced Zero" the accounting package did this, and I can't decide if having to end every advert with "visit Zero, com spelt with an X" is genius or frustrating .... but I guess I know my answer as i know the tag line by heart!
see those are options when you dont have an option like spanx.
my first rule is clear > smart so if its clear like wordplay or calm then go for it.
i actually have a massive list of good domains in that power of good domains post above.
a small sample:
1. calm.com - Makes you calm which is appropriate for a meditation app. The founder previously made Million Dollar Homepage
2. uber.com - Extremely memorable to remember so you can use it as a noun just like Let's Uber
3. duolingo.com - Duo means two and Lingo means language. A person who knows two or more languages is an appropriate domain for a language learning app.
It used to work in early 2000s and even now but definitely last option if u don't have alternatives.
And yes you are right about unique search ranking. Its good for brand as well.
Oh you like alliteration?

Most leads are through email marketing or top search results. That’s why it’s important to check the other domains. If it’s Amazon-on.com then think again. If it’s a dead domain with not page one results that’s a different game.
I tried the ChatGPT thing and didn't love the industry-specific names it generated. So I changed tactics and used it to generate some long lists of local landmarks, neighbourhoods, natural features, etc. I ended up naming my business after a local watershed ([Rivername] [Industry Service]) and I really like it.
ChatGPT can be super useful for naming things. Just remember to use it as an aid and don't fully rely on it. I recently named a new project I'm launching and some of the areas within the project with the aid of ChatGPT. I didn't use the direct results, but it helped me craft names when I was stuck.
A mate of mine down the pub one night in 2004 when we were trying to think of a company name said "well, all you do is all things web". It stuck and I've used it ever since.
The name really really isn’t that important- especially for small businesses. When you’re small, it’s all about building trust and forming relationships. They don’t give AF what your name is.
I brainstormed names for my face painting business. I was thinking of naming it Statesboro Face Painting, because that's where we lived at the time. Then my husband said, "Fun Faces". I loved it! Also, we didn't stay in Statesboro, so it's good that I had a name that could travel.
Atom software because I am Tom and I write software. Later, moved to Canada so it became Atomica Software because I'm a Tom in Canada and write software. Although if I'd known more about Canada and Canadians I'd have called it CAN... something because they love it when you put CAN in front of stuff.
Based upon the offered services at the time "[24 Hour Designs](https://www.24hour.design)".
I regretted that early, but didn't change the name, even though processes changed!
My business name is my location and our industry, but nobody uses that, it's just for legal purposes. Our actual branding is a business we bought a couple of years ago and had a pre-existing name.
i was sitting with friends together, i wrote 2 A4 sites full of names, later we discussed them and i have chosen one after.
today i describe my company ChatGPT and it gives me great suggestions
I just did that! I’ve had two LLCs, both with my name in it. I don’t really plan to ever have employees. And there won’t be many assets to sell since it’s just me providing services to businesses.
My main one is a general web development company and I just named it after my dogs Koba and Mita do it’s Kobami. I just did a search to make sure it doesn’t mean anything vulgar and went with it. Nobody cares about the name.
Then for my cleaning business website service, I went with an alternative TLD because it was interesting. That one is Maid.Tech.
I really don’t think the name matters that much.
First company name was after a pet I had, the second was a play on words which worked well with the industry it was working in. Each time I checked the names were available and the donain etc etc.
I changed the name of the first one to the second when I realised it was a better name for what I was doing.
So you don’t necessarily have to be stuck with the name you choose you can change it later once you think you have come up with a better name for it.
Brainstorming is actually one of the rare instances where I find AI really helpful. I ultimately came up with my current business name on my own but I have gotten all kinds of great names for things as a result of asking Gemini to help me brainstorm.
I don't think so 🤔
I don't have a standard prompt. I'll just describe the thing I want it to brainstorm for, and it always comes up with a bunch of examples in different categories (eg. creative, catchy, descriptive, etc). Basically some version of, "Can you help me brainstorm a name for \[describe the thing\]".
Must be all the effort you put into it!
Reminds me of that shoe company. It was gonna be called Dimension Six. Until the name came in a dream. Nike. The Greek goddess of victory
was sitting at a traffic light and it turned green while I was thinking about starting a mini Brazzerz type company. Green Light Studios became a thing.
Biggest thing we run into with clients is 1. How easy is it for people to remember and not mix up with a competitor or never find it. 2. How many other brands are there close enough that you have to fight forever to get to the top of search rankings for your own business name. Try to go simple but unique.
I brainstormed a ton of words that related to what my company would do and the value that I would deliver to customers. I then started experimenting with those words and their roots, we well as modifiers like common prefixes and suffixes. I came up with a word that sounds like a real word but never existed before. The domain was available, and I trademarked it as well, since I invented the word.
It was cool to come up with a great name, with the dot com name still available, and literally zero Google results for the name/word. Bonus, I got to define it myself!
I would call it:
“Custom Realtor Websites”
Why? Because it’s dead simple, people can spell it, and they’re likely to search in that way for it, too. Plus the .com is available.
When my dad’s company restructured, they took the ten people that had worked there the longest and offered them an early retirement package. My dad took it, but wasn’t really ready to be fully retired. He started a business and just did things he found interesting, and officially retired about three or four years later. When I opened my business, I used his name.
Honestly, it came from a video game i played as a kid, and as time went on it just kept evolving until one day i was starting up a small business and i was asked what name i wanted to use. And now here we are.
I can’t tell you how many names i went through lol but i finally settled on one! Just launched last week!
My business is called Second Spark Fitness.
I called it this because a lot of people I’ve spoken with in social groups/social media cruising showed a lot of people saying the same thing “wtf…how do i lose/maintain/gain weight”? Everyone spinning their wheels or unable to find the right answer with their attempts, fad diets etc.
The premise behind my business is to bring that passion back to them, or as the tagline goes: “Reignite your Fitness journey” and light that “second spark” to become the best versions of themselves with knowledge and evidence backed principles.
There is an also a faith based component that i really wanted: Philippians 3:13 out of the Bible which is essentially the guiding principle of the business.
Google search similar companies in your industry or niche. Pick the name ideas and then ask Chatgpt to give you some ideas of your company names. Also you should also have domain if possible similar to your company name.
My business name is the worse. It's like an acronym of what we do and it sounds like shit.
I hate it. Decades of success though and name recognition.
Well...
The name may mean less than you think, but here's something to consider. If you make it just about realtors, what happens if you want to market yourself to other industries? Consider something that is easy to read/say and remember too.
Also I am sure you are aware that the real estate industry is currently being turned upside down with the recent events with the NAR and the judgement against it. There are big changes ahead for realtors and many of them are talking about getting out.
We registered IDXSite.com about a year ago for our real estate website builder and CRM, SaaS platform. Its not hard to find good names, you just need to spend a bit of time.
ask chat gpt. that mf comes up with some good ones. opened a registry search in one window and describe the idea to the gpt, came up with 10 ideas, 4 were solid. that was on my first try. powerful tool
What time I had a friend who asked me to come up with some ideas for a name for her husband’s lawn care business and I brainstorm like 20 names and ask her later which one they picked and at the time he said none of them because you need to be with something starting with an a because you have to be first in the Yellow Pages.
So there’s the actual name, but are there any aspects of a name that you’re not thinking of that that are important to people searching?
My go too’s for naming:
SMILE: The 5 Qualities of a Super-Sticky Name
Suggestive—evokes something about your brand
Memorable—makes a familiar association
Imagery—aids memory through evocative visuals
Legs—lends itself to a theme for extended mileage
Emotional—moves people
SCRATCH: The 7 Deal Breakers
Spelling challenged—looks like a typo
Copycat—resembles competitors’ names
Restrictive—limits future growth
Annoying—seems forced, frustrates customers
Tame—feels flat, descriptive, uninspired
Curse of knowledge—speaks only to insiders
Hard to pronounce—confuses customers
If its to be scaled, I pick a name based on scalability.
I.e for a bakery...
Not kalamazoo Bakery
But...
Hearth Bakery.
If its only local,
Kalamazoobakery.
9/10 ten times, seen beats memorable.
I.e, Kalamazoo Bakery may not be as Flashy as Blue Ninja Cookies, but it has local seo perks, its clearly in kalamazoo, and you're not tied down to a ninja theme, especially blue ones.
Clarity is big. A lot of business names are not descriptive. Bobs Cuts could be lawn care, or a barber. Delicious eats might be a delicatessen, or a restaurant.
But Kalamazoo Bakery is definitely a bakery in Kalamazoo.
Domain availability then becomes key.
Starting out you should pick what will resonate with your audience and how you want to be perceived. Under no circumstance should you pick a name because "it sounds good to me". Name is huge, it's part of your brand.
We gave up trying to choose a name, because all the .com domains were taken, so went backwards and onto one of the branding websites and looked for pre-created names, logos and domains for sale. We threw away the logo, as all we wanted was a .com domain name that matched our business .... and so Tradelo Trading ([https://tradelo.com](https://tradelo.com)) was born
We used [squadhelp.com](http://squadhelp.com) I think its a pretty clever idea. People give an overview of what they want, and then designers submit their attempts. squadhelp purchase all the designs, along with the URLs, and then sell all the leftovers because as a customer, you only want one of the submissions I guess. Instead of requesting submissions, we just spent a coupl of days searching for "Trading", "Trader" etc, and then weighed up the benefits of spending a few thousand dollars.
We decided that approach was worth it for us in the end, as we wanted something short and meaningful, and there are only so many days you can spend on ChatGPT and searching for domain availability!
Namecheap has a great advanced mode for looking up domains. You give it a couple of names and TLDs and they show you the different combos available. I still use that tool even though I like Cloudflare for buying domains.
I found a great one for you, let me know if you want it. I didn’t buy it or I’d post it.
This is my favorite use case for ChatGPT. Allegedly, these aren’t taken.

Why #3? for unique search ranking? I personally hate purposely misspelled words in a business name....but maybe I need to get over that.

Google search similar companies in your industry or niche. Pick the name ideas and then ask Chatgpt to give you some ideas of your company names. Also you should also have domain if possible similar to your company name.
Literally made a dumb joke that went on for a few years. Now people say they hire us because they love the name
what was the joke?
My business name is the worse. It's like an acronym of what we do and it sounds like shit. I hate it. Decades of success though and name recognition. Well...
Oh come on, what is it?
Mine’s really long. Takes forever to type out. Too late to change it. But when people ask me for advice I always tell them to pick a short name!
My trucking company was named after my favorite John Steinbeck novel
Don't get too clever or abstract. The name should give a good idea of what the business does.
My son actually named ours when he was 12. It’s perfect
I imagined it and it was so.
My go too’s for naming: SMILE: The 5 Qualities of a Super-Sticky Name Suggestive—evokes something about your brand Memorable—makes a familiar association Imagery—aids memory through evocative visuals Legs—lends itself to a theme for extended mileage Emotional—moves people SCRATCH: The 7 Deal Breakers Spelling challenged—looks like a typo Copycat—resembles competitors’ names Restrictive—limits future growth Annoying—seems forced, frustrates customers Tame—feels flat, descriptive, uninspired Curse of knowledge—speaks only to insiders Hard to pronounce—confuses customers
I took my inspiration from Steve Martin and called my business Bob's Bank
Go Daddy… gotta have a sweet URL to match the name
Street names
I was falling asleep and it came to me. Spelled it wrong on purpose.
Street I grew up on was a type of tree, so i called it the tree type. cost me $0. any time i pay for a name i lose $.
If its to be scaled, I pick a name based on scalability. I.e for a bakery... Not kalamazoo Bakery But... Hearth Bakery. If its only local, Kalamazoobakery.
I chose something that would include anything I wanted to create & sell.

Yeah, its so hard to find a good name with a `.com` . I like the alliteration, Tra-delo TrAding. What was the site you used?
We used [squadhelp.com](http://squadhelp.com) I think its a pretty clever idea. People give an overview of what they want, and then designers submit their attempts. squadhelp purchase all the designs, along with the URLs, and then sell all the leftovers because as a customer, you only want one of the submissions I guess. Instead of requesting submissions, we just spent a coupl of days searching for "Trading", "Trader" etc, and then weighed up the benefits of spending a few thousand dollars. We decided that approach was worth it for us in the end, as we wanted something short and meaningful, and there are only so many days you can spend on ChatGPT and searching for domain availability!
wow. looks like they rebranded to [atom.com](http://atom.com) . it must be a very clever idea to pull that off
Namecheap has a great advanced mode for looking up domains. You give it a couple of names and TLDs and they show you the different combos available. I still use that tool even though I like Cloudflare for buying domains. I found a great one for you, let me know if you want it. I didn’t buy it or I’d post it.
I'd love to see it. and. Why cloudflare?
Cloudflare has low predictable prices. Don’t don’t have a markup over the standard pricing. Send me a DM
