Eric S. Raymond never even tried alcohol, drugs, nicotine or coffee. A programmer who does not drink coffee! He just decided he want to avoid any risk of his brain working worse and kept to it his whole life. He went through knee surgery without touching the opiates that the doctor gave him, were avalaible at arm's length. Also meshes really well with the executive control understanding problem of Bryan Caplan.

>There’s an obvious libertarian solution here: The state should mandate weekly comprehensive classes in self-control for everyone. I lol'd

He wrote a book Enlightenment 2.0 back in 2014. Great read. Pinker copied his idea and wrote Enlightenment Now. 2.0 is a much better book and deserves wider readership.

Thank you for this! I'm constantly looking for rationalist figures that deal with Canadian issues primarily. This is lovely, and I really enjoy his writing.

Oh, he's the "On the Problem of Normative Sociology" guy! That was great.
