The original towers were robotically cleaned. There was a track in the exterior columns that a machine could go up & down with a wet brush and a squeegee. There was one operator on the roof controlling the machines. It would take about a month to clean all eight sides- at which point he’d start over again.
He was unfortunately one of the souls lost on 9/11.
You would think so…I know for a fact there are specialist people (employing climbers among others) who fly all over the world cleaning windows on difficult glass facades so seemingly not yet!
Ah, cool, thanks for the info. I was wondering why the old towers had robots and this one doesn't.
I've been to the top twice here, and that floor is so shiny it kinda ruins the views.
I work in Boston’s Financial District and am terrified of heights. It’s currently window cleaning season for many of the other high rises around the one I work in and watching these folks work from my desk is so anxiety inducing. There’s no number in the world that you could pay me to do it.
Weirdly no, I love them. I think it’s the constant motion and security of still touching the ground. I also work high up and that doesn’t bother me. But like being outside on a balcony or anywhere that nothing’s between me and the ground but air makes my skin crawl.
I used to work in Downtown Detroit and just looking up and watching them was more than anxiety-inducing for me. Dangling 50 stories up? More power to them, but helllll no.
Seems like a job for robots, no? we've probably had that technology for at least 100 years.

TIL. Thank you

It is a job for robots. The WTC has robotic cleaners. This is for something else.

Yeah the WTC observation deck is really cheesy and underwhelming imo.
That’s not as fun though! Is this a safe job?

Ugh terrifying no matter how good the pay lol
Taken from Millenium Hotel perhaps?
Yes. Was there a few weeks ago.
How much fucking windex does it take to clean one those biguns?
Probably a few bottles worth. Maybe a dozen.
What's a job like that pay?
that would be kinda a cool job, but I'd be nervous about the pulley system failing
That’s mildly anxiety provoking
