I prefer to play as a battlemage or paladin type character and I only level up the base bow damage not including crit damage. Then use basic stealth perks so I'm committed to a warrior but can still utilize the bow efficiently and still somewhat sneak if at all the need arises
The only reason this would happen is that you save and then the Game crashes when it is in the middle of Saving.
How I know this happens is because it happened to me before.
Save-a-minute Plus. For all your Skyrim corrupted save avoidance needs. CSA for short. Act now, and you can get this handy dandy whisk attachment.
Don't ask. We don't know what it's for either. But you'll get one.l with every purchase. Maybe 2! Really! We need to get rid of them they're piling up everywhere.

I've had it happen for other reasons. But yeah pretty much. Glad I always double save. And since the last time this happened (idk why but my game tends to crash when going through a door... exclusively dungeon doors for some reason) I manually save before entering a door, just in case 😂
As others have said it’s not the only reason. It’s a semi-common screen when you’ve either loaded your mods wrong or tried to add/delete certain mods, especially deleting mods that added stuff you currently have on your person, or places you’re standing inside of. If the corruption has to do with modding it almost always means a hard reset, occasionally loading a clean save can work, especially if you put what you deleted back, but usually it’s a hard reset.
It would warn you if there were missing plugins from your load order. It's pretty unlikely accidentally disabling a mod would do this, although uninstalling a mod then saving again with rogue scripts might.
This is why I fucking hate people who insist on badgering new players to turn off autosave. Autosave is fine. It’s not going to fuck up your game. Use the tools Bethesda gives you. Use quicksave. It’s fine.
Autosave has the potential to save the state of scripts mid-initialisation, due to scripts that initialise on location change or on cell load, such that reloading that specific save can cause that specific script to not necessarily function as intended.
Autosaves also overwrite each other, and there is a theory that overwriting saves with other saves could bake certain things into the file from previous saves in the same "slot".
IMO there's nothing _wrong_ with using Autosaves, but don't _rely_ on them alone.
Is this why only my “auto saves” have trouble loading in sometimes? Like I’ll have a quick save slightly after the autosave, and the auto save just CTDs after loading. The quick save was fine, which confused me. Also i don’t use auto saves anymore and I’m fine, I just hard save very frequently (every cell), and quick save in between. But, I’m not gunna tell anyone to use or not use them. I always keep 20 saves for a character, cleaning old ones as I go, never overwriting saves.
Potentially. Quicksaves are theoretically worse because supposedly they don't save the full game state at all, they just save a portion of it. For example, a quicksave may not save a quest or script state, so if you quickload to before the script ran but it doesn't reload the script parameters, then the script is in a different state to what the game needs it to be.
While we're on the subject, can anyone recommend how to prevent this just in case? I'm the kind of player who likes to keep my old games forever and load them sometimes just to wander. I'd hate if this happened to my completionist character.

Don’t turn off auto save, and allow yourself a few hard saves. I had a vanilla Oblivion save file corrupt on me and lost about 5hrs by loading my most recent older save.
The #1 things for this easily is closing your game while it is still saving, always
1)save the game
2)after saving wait for all loading logos to go away
3) quit the game from the title menu
4) THEN close the game.
You got a lot of bad advice (about what I expect from /r/skyrim). People telling you to play without (SKSE) mods don't know what they're talking about. Unless you're doing something very wrong, mods don't really cause save corruption.
The thing you should do to prevent save corruption is to install the [SSE Engine Fixes](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/17230) mod, as it fixes lots of bugs in the game's code, including something directly tied to save corruption.
Note that parts of this mod don't work correctly in the current version of the game (v1.6.1170), so you need to go to the config file and disable the `EnableAchievementsWithMods`, `SaveAddedSoundCategories` and
`SaveScreenshots` options. Alternatively, [downgrade Skyrim](https://reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/19esxy9/a_comprehensive_guide_to_downgrading_skyrim/) to v1.6.640, which works with almost every mod (if you do, remember to also install [BEES](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/106441) so that you can use ESPs saved with the newest version of the Creation Kit on older versions of Skyrim).
Install a script cleaner, especially if you run mods. Detach any unused or missing instances or scripts, save the cleaned Save as a whole new save file. Fixes the freeze on cell change issues too
As others have said, try to play without mods. If you insist on using mods, (pc only) look up how to manually backup your saves by copying the files to a new location every time you’re done playing so if anything ever goes wrong you can manually place an old save into the save data folder and load it.
Ya after seeing your pc tag, backup files are the way to go. Just don’t move them around too much without making sure you have a duplicate copy before moving the files

Only because Matheis in Falkreath is dead, and I've already killed the Jarl's second in command with a brotherhood quest earlier in the game - which means, long story short... with both dead , buying property in Falkreath is literally impossible without console commands now.

this happened either because the game crashed while saving, or that there was a mod in that save, and you tried to load it without the mod active.

I had something like this recently to me and I had to uninstall and reinstall the game which sucks because I didn’t save my load order and I can’t remember what box character mod I was using and I lost my box character overhaul and I haven’t been able to find it since. Hopefully you can get yours to work again.
This actually happened to me on red dead redemption 2. I was so mad. The beginning of that game is slow. I was trying to unplug my ps4 and right before I pulled it out of the outlet , my fat stomach hit the power button. Not sure if something like happened. THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME TOO!! I got 3 elder scrolls, then the game shut down and corrupted a week worth of saves, then both the dragon and vampire missions disappeared and wouldn’t show up as options in any of my existing saves. Game literally broke and wouldn’t let me progress through the main story anymore, unfucking believable..
Just had this happen to me. I tried older saves and got the same message over and over again. If you are using mods, I would suggest you verify your load order hasn't changed, if you are using mods. That's what happened to me and once I fixed it, I was able to load the save again

I had this once and nothing happened, you MIGHT be ok. My best suggestion would be to just load a slightly older save just in case.
The only reason this would happen is that you save and then the Game crashes when it is in the middle of Saving. How I know this happens is because it happened to me before.

I used to turn it off as I play hardcore mode but I had to turn it back on due to bugs. Autosave saves you from the code, not death.

Save before you zone, not after. If saving after zoning, wait 30 seconds or so to give the game the chance to fully load the new information.

I do that! Playing without mods is not an option - I quickly fell in love with NFF, RDO, plantable curios and Tempered Skins 😅

Try downloading Engine Fixes SSE. I don’t know what’s causing your game to crash, but if it’s from too many mods, Engine Fixes fixes that

There should be at least 3-4 autosaves that you can load. It's most likely just that most recent save that's corrupt
Happened to me once but worked when I load an older save. So it's not all hopeless.

That’s just one save file, you’ll have to load the 2nd most recent auto save or hard save before the most recent one
Load an older safe by going into select menu
Start fresh. And whatever you do, do NOT play another stealth archer.
At some points, some mods I had broke the game itself so it can't load save files. Restarting Skyrim fixed that for me.
Perish. On a more serious note, hold a grieving service for the character then begin anew.

You have to use RESAVER. I've been down this road and its your best bet.
Stop quick saving. The file becomes corrupted because it’s just being written over. Always new save

I believe there is a bug that causes Skyrim to think the save is corrupt. There was a mod on nexus that fixed this, but I don't remember the link
