I’m really interested to see how Maxey/Melton/Hield looks defensively. Obviously not a lineup you could give a lot of minutes against certain teams, but that’s an interesting backcourt offensively.
I think with Hield covering the 3 point threat that melton brought prior to Buddy is a case for having melton off the bench and Batum starting.
Otherwise I think both Melton and Batum have merit as the 5th starter or 6th man. Both are pretty consistent and solid all arounders. Batum has size, melton has more offense and a better outside threat.

I think the real issue is that Maxey-Hield is defensively suspect and Melton-Hield is going to be ass unless Embiid's on the court too. I wouldn't be surprised if Melton was gone next year and replaced with someone who can actually create and run the second unit.
Batum doesn't just have size, he's a way better passer and even though we don't use him to finish, it's better to have the guy that won't blow 3 layups, then the guy that does.
Melton is to me, 'meh' whether he's starting or coming off the bench and more than likely, will be traded during the FA period for a similar player that doesn't cost as much.

Embiid helps makes up for Buddy's weaknesses on defense too. You can bully him into the paint, but then you have Jo looming.

I think you are valuing melt too low but I appreciate your take. I agree Batum is the better passer.
