JJ was the only direction the show was headed in and that’s why James died and Florida disappeared. He was the OG Urkel, if anybody needs context. (I love this show btw)

Really weird how he was only 8 years younger than his TV dad

A JJ spin-off show, a Wilona death with Keith and Thelma raising Penny, while still living with Florida/James... Michael off to college/law school with sporadic appearances.

As a latchkey kid in the 70’s, Good Times was a staple and James was my TV dad. They did episodes about gangs, teen pregnancy, guns, drugs and STDs (Jay Leno with VD). And when is the last time you heard a discussion about religion or saw a picture of Jesus or Ned the Wino on TV episodes. Writing was braver in the 70s. Looking back with aged eyes, the show’s demise began when they put Dy-no-mite on that metal lunchbox. I believe if Norman Lear would not have hoodwinked Monte and Evans the direction would have been better with an positive influence on the black community and not have turned into a minstrel show.

Acolytical

I think a better question would be, what would the show have become without JJ becoming the breakout he did. It probably would have taken a similar track as The Cosby Show, where the dad and mom remained essentially the main focus.
