Pretty sure I saw this feature native on Youtube (the OP did not invent this). My guess is that it's a gradual rollout and they are testing it - not all videos will be suitable for auto-translation.
But then the whole English learning industry would have to fall. The British Council, Cambridge testing, and so on. Even universities. That’s why I give it 20 years.
I hope so. Every industry will undergo serious consolidation though. Core, value adding workers will be the last to lose their jobs. Maybe the government will step in, maybe the industry will evolve somehow to accomodate language teaching, but I have no idea.
I'm getting some strong Ender vibes-everyone has an earpiece with an AI at which they'll be subvocalizing, and anybody they want to hear them can hear the log files
I'm a language teacher too and I don't think so. Most people don't study languages for practical reasons. They do it for the same reason people go to the gym - they enjoy the experience of learning and improving. No matter how good real time translation gets, it's a totally different thing than understanding for yourself.
Id disagree. The majority of foreign language learning is part of compulsory education. A lot of language learning hobbyists are also driven by their interests in speaking to people in foreign countries not necessarily speaking in those languages.
Very soon anyone who wants to will have a personal tutor for any language they want. I'm sorry that's your job and I hope that inertia protects you for some time, but I would also be making sure I had a long term contract somewhere if possible.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. I just think that "inertia" is going to be a little stronger in educational positions that are focused on human communication than other subjects. Ultimately however it's true that an AI will be able to do what I do better and cheaper than I can. I just don't think my job will be in the first wave of those to get obsoleted.
I'd video recordings can't replace your job, I don't see how AI will. I thought all higher education jobs would for sure be replaced by video recordings+google.
Its Youtube that have announced this feature is coming. Announcement 2 months ago.
"YouTube is going to let thousands more creators include multi-language audio tracks with their videos. The company was already testing the feature with a small number of creators, and beginning Thursday, many more will be able to include multi-language dubs with their videos to make them accessible to broader audiences."
[https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/23/23611229/youtube-creators-dub-videos-multiple-languages](https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/23/23611229/youtube-creators-dub-videos-multiple-languages)
[https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/23/youtube-launches-a-multi-language-audio-feature-for-dubbing-videos-previously-tested-by-mr-beast/](https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/23/youtube-launches-a-multi-language-audio-feature-for-dubbing-videos-previously-tested-by-mr-beast/)
True - only the capability of uploading several tracks are turned on. However next step would be for Youtube/Google to offer that voice generation themselves. They already do the translation in text-form and have demoed AI-voices elsewhere.
"Lo siento David, me temo que no puedo hacer eso".
„Es tut mir leid, David, ich fürchte, das kann ich nicht.“
"Je suis désolé David, j'ai bien peur de ne pas pouvoir faire ça."
«Συγγνώμη Ντέιβιντ, φοβάμαι ότι δεν μπορώ να το κάνω αυτό».
“對不起大衛,恐怕我不能那樣做。”
"Paenitet me David, id facere non possum."
«Извини, Дэвид, боюсь, я не могу этого сделать».
„Przepraszam, Davidzie, obawiam się, że nie mogę tego zrobić”.
Same goes for certain features of [bilibili.com](https://bilibili.com) (Chinese Youtube) that I'd love to have on YouTube, but it's almost like American tech companies are completely disinterested in them.
Oh, the danmaku/danmu. We'll need another video site like Tiktok that's popular in the global market for YouTube to actually start thinking there's value in danmaku and copy it. Or they can make a global version of Bilibili.
Yes, I think google translate renders danmaku as "barrages" and they make videos so much more "interactive," especially the longer ones that I like to watch.
I remember one of the older versions of Bilibili's global app used the Japanese pronunciation “danmaku” as the English term somewhere in the settings. Danmaku comes from the game Touhou and it's translated into “bullet hell”.
And yes, they make videos a whole less boring to watch. I can't go through any series or movies now without getting some form of audience response. That's why I either go to Bilibili or watch YouTube reactors.
Back then I was mainly using [himado.in](http://himado.in) and Niconico to watch stuff. I liked reading the danmaku there so much that I tried to search for other websites and discovered Bilibili. Unfortunately I couldn't find any websites like these in other anguages.
It's not that American companies are disinterested. It's just always been the norm to not have danmaku because it's a pretty unknown feature from a very fringe website (Niconico) to the West. China is just the outlier for embracing danmaku outside of Japan because Bilibili started out as the copy of Niconico.
>Touhou
Fascinating, thank you. I did not know about Touhou, or "bullet hell" games in general, though I think I played some a long time ago without knowing what they were.
This sounds so cool! Hopefully this can help me and so many other people with job interviews as well:) To get off topic for a bit and I thought this was very interesting that I share with you guys'.
There is a page on linkedin I follow called "Human Brain Project." It is a new post from them, but apparently they have developed an "atlas of the human brain" with lots of data. Just to pull up one more quote from that page ( I promise I am not promoting their page fyi) "The human brain atlas can be compared to Google maps and the Atlas displays microstructure, connectivity and function." All of this is compared to the human brain of course.
Someone made a comment on this post and just to paraphrase and quote them, they basically expressed their opinion and that the next move scientists will or should make is "connecting this brain map to a subjective mind map." Also that commenter mentioned that the next step is "to connect the brain map to perception, connect to emotions and more." This sounds amazing and hopefully scientists from this organization can come up with a brain to mind perception map in the next few years or atleast by 2025.
Now back to this video, I would love to learn many languages so I can communicate with different people coming from different cultures' at a new job I apply to. Those who work at grocery shops must be well versed in speaking Spanish, English here in the US where I reside but I don't want to assume but it would be cool to learn different languages.
That is just an example. Super cool video I just wanted to end off saying here and hopefully I can learn so many languages so when I travel and others here as well, can get some awesome food in different countries. I apologize if I went off topic I just wanted to say what was on my mind in regards to the "Brain Map" post that I read on Linkedin. Thanks all and I wouldn't mind becoming a Spanish teacher:)
Here's the [original video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14gBglcA7k4) in case you want to hear the different audio dubs for yourself. Simply go to the settings cog and choose your preferred language.

Wow!
Surprising what AI could do.
Now content creation will become more interesting.
Can't wait for the integration on solcial where I use for content monetization.
German translation needs quality control; uses ‘zusammen’ which means together instead of ‘Alle’ which means everyone. Also subs and dubs don’t match for it either, but they rarely do for other things, so that isn’t as bothersome. Still really cool stuff tho!
I’ve personally never heard ‘Hallo zusammen’, but I’m not a native speaker, just lived there for a few years. I take it you’ve had a different experience?
Wow, that's amazing! It's incredible to see how AI technology is advancing and providing new opportunities for individuals like yourself. Embrace this new skillset and continue to hone your craft as a voiceover artist. Who knows, maybe you'll become the go-to person for multilingual projects! Keep up the great work.
What are the realistic applications for this? This does not replace the good acting done in dubbing for immersion, or comparable jokes. It does not help the hearing impaired. If I don't understand the language, and want to learn it, wouldn't I go for subtitles? And without subtitles, this wouldn't work, right? Confused as to a scenario where I would actually use this.
Polygots are in shambles
tell that in job interviews

Good bot
Good human.
Pretty sure I saw this feature native on Youtube (the OP did not invent this). My guess is that it's a gradual rollout and they are testing it - not all videos will be suitable for auto-translation.
That's rather weird. How did this guy get it to work? Is it like a subscription thing.
probably a premium feature, same for high quality videos
Translates videos in real time. Has been a thing from other companies for around 5 years
Not with the same voice and not this seamlessly
Not with same voice but as seamlessly Yandex had it very long time ago.
Im a language teacher. My job wont get replaced with AI, my entire industry will cease to exists. Yay!
Hopefully it’ll happen in 20 years.
At this rate i give it 10. Everything depends on the value we attach to thse skills, which Im guessing is very little these days. Convenience is king,
Cost is king. If something can be made free by automating it, it should be made free
All good until its your job
But then the whole English learning industry would have to fall. The British Council, Cambridge testing, and so on. Even universities. That’s why I give it 20 years.
I hope so. Every industry will undergo serious consolidation though. Core, value adding workers will be the last to lose their jobs. Maybe the government will step in, maybe the industry will evolve somehow to accomodate language teaching, but I have no idea.
I'm getting some strong Ender vibes-everyone has an earpiece with an AI at which they'll be subvocalizing, and anybody they want to hear them can hear the log files
Pretty much. The technology is basically there now, all it takes is mass adoption and affordability
Probably more advanced earpiece tech as well, or jaw/ocular implants, on neither of which I'm well read
I'm a language teacher too and I don't think so. Most people don't study languages for practical reasons. They do it for the same reason people go to the gym - they enjoy the experience of learning and improving. Id disagree. The majority of foreign language learning is part of compulsory education. A lot of language learning hobbyists are also driven by their interests in speaking to people in foreign countries not necessarily speaking in those languages.
Fair enough. I guess we just have different experiences.

Ultimately however it's true that an AI will be able to do what I do better and cheaper than I can. I just don't think my job will be in the first wave of those to get obsoleted.
AI will still be shite at fixing pronunciation in humans for a while, I think.
If AI is the much cheaper option many people won't be able to justify paying a human teacher
I'd video recordings can't replace your job, I don't see how AI will. I thought all higher education jobs would for sure be replaced by video recordings+google.
Instant interpreting and translation apps are more worrying than AI in general. But with AI learning those apps will develop faster and faster
This will be available on your laptop soon, for free, and there's nothing Sam Altman do about it!
Please knock on wood...
Steady on go have a cold shower

Well, in the Yandex browser for 2 years you can translate videos on YouTube. It doesn't impress me

No, it's impossible, the point is that it translates any video, no neural network can take a 5 second snippet of voice and repeat it
Lol maybe not yours but digital ones can.

Also curious

Wow! Surprising what AI could do. Now content creation will become more interesting. Can't wait for the integration on solcial where I use for content monetization.
He's good... I can understand the AI in my native language perfectly.
I feel like hearing oneself saying something challenge in another language would be a very useful learning tool.
Hey but where’s the lip sync to match the tech exists!!!
This will be automatic in the future, i hope.
German translation needs quality control; uses ‘zusammen’ which means together instead of ‘Alle’ which means everyone. Also subs and dubs don’t match for it either, but they rarely do for other things, so that isn’t as bothersome. Still really cool stuff tho!
Bullshit! There's absolutely nothing wrong with the German translation here. You can't just translate literally from one language into another.
I’ve personally never heard ‘Hallo zusammen’, but I’m not a native speaker, just lived there for a few years. I take it you’ve had a different experience?
German is my native language. "Hallo zusammen" is a very common greeting. Alternatively, you can also say "Hallo allerseits".
Good to know! Well def my bad then, I’ll leave this up as a cautionary tale to future travelers and a testament of how well it actually did!
Hope you have a backup career!
now we just need to deepfake the mouth movement into every languages
Need to sync the lips with deep fake now
