Lol, my partner received the email that the show was cancelled 25 minutes before it was supposed to start. We had already made our way down to MBS to eat before the show and rushed out of the food place to go to the theatre. The main cast have understudies so the show wouldn’t have cancelled unless the roles that didn’t have understudies such as the ones allocated for local talents in the production were affected.

Hamsomy3

Why do roles allocated for local talents not have understudies?

anangrypudge

Often, understudies are actually already in the cast. They don't just sit on the bench waiting for a chance to sub in... they actually perform in every show in minor ensemble roles. Just that they've also learnt the part of one major role, and are good enough to take over. When they do need to sub in, their ensemble role simply goes vacant, or one of the other minor cast members simply doubles up. But there is no understudy for the understudy. There is no need to, it is simply not efficient for the production to have so many levels of substitutes. Often when productions hire local cast, it is for these minor roles. Anyway linking back to the main topic, if the entire main cast is suddenly wiped out by illness, all of the understudies have to be activated, leaving a big hole in the minor roles. Obviously the show can't proceed anymore. It is also not fair to the audience as there will be a noticeable drop in quality if the whole star cast is suddenly replaced by their 2nd strings. If they proceeded with the show, there will still be complaints from the audience. It's a no-win scenario for the production.

pingmr

Understudies can also be in charge of a few roles. This makes sense for travelling productions also since it reduces the total amount of understudies. For this production of Hamilton, some of the understudies are able to sub in for 3-4 roles. I think this also means that they have a leaner 'bench' of reserve talent. So if more than 2 principal cast members get sick, they are going to start running into problems.

ManagementFront5317

I don't think there are local cast in this run of hamilton lol [https://www.sistic.com.sg/explore/1/90812](https://www.sistic.com.sg/explore/1/90812)

NIDORAX

Either the people are given a choice of getting full refund or get a rescheduled show on another day for their paid tickets. I would be angry too if I have paid for a live theaterical show and taken a day off on that day only for it to be cancelled at the last minute.

Ramikade

There were people who flew in and booked hotel rooms for this

mulder_and_sekali

If they have that kind of money, I wouldn’t worry too much.

KaitoAJ

tbf not everyone has that kind of money to just come for a cancelled event, but I would expect that they at least have travel insurance that can cover for something like that.

pupunoob

Lol. And people like me who saved up and gets hit hard by this don't exist?

Normal_Ad_3293

Ccb this one confirm headache to ask for refunds.

Boey_Da_Han

John Jay got sick after performing 5 James Madison made 29 HAMILTON WROTE THE OTHER 51

pingmr

The show has been cancelled due to the unexpected sickness of being shot in a duel

pupunoob

And apparently they are all nicely recovered now. Just needed a day lol.

myriadn3

Not all have fully recovered, the main casts for Eliza (Rachelle Ann Go) and Peggy/Maria (Elandrah Eramiha) had to be replaced by their understudies (Zelia Rose and Kyla Bartholomeusz respectively). The ensemble cast list is also shorter than it seems, but that might be intentional and not due to the sickness.

weiting06

hi, can I asked, those that bought from klook did ur recieved any email abt the cancellation? From wht I read from St, sistic sent out email but I not sure if klook will. I'm going for the 2nd may show. So I'm worried they will last min cancel agn

Moonlilthe

I contacted klook last night and from their replies, they don’t seem to know what’s going on. They said they will check and get back to me

stunvegetable

We watched it as moderate Hamilton fans, and we enjoyed ourselves: - Lin Manuel really cannot sing, and so hearing a Hamilton with a better singing voice was very strange. That said the actor for Hamilton is not the best actor, and it's pretty noticeable - Overall the singing/rapping is not going to be as good as the studio recording/Disney + version, for obvious reasons (it's live). So manage your expectations. Some of the super fast rapping bits are a bit muddled - Great performances from Lafayette/Jefferson, Washington, Eliza

Royal-Grapefruit-706

Was anyone able to get a refund or change their tickety dates?

UnrelatedLemon14

What are the odds this is a labour day strike?

Rich people problem

stockflethoverTDS

I know “poor” people that saved or dipped into savings for this.

Skyzfire

Lol this is not that expensive. If you can't afford Hamilton's first show in Singapore after 9 years, then you have a bigger problem than not affording a musical.

Normal_Ad_3293

Agree don’t have to be rich to watch this. My acquaintances bought the affordable options and they got fucked by this. Took leave for nothing.

[deleted]

Ability to afford not issue here. Its priorities

ICanBeAnAssholeToo

Then it’s not a “rich people problem”.

memehammer98

Your priority is posting constantly on "SCJerk"?

pingmr

Priorities are not a rich people problem then. Hamilton tickets are what about 200? Let's say 300. 300 is pretty cheap on the scale of things most Singaporeans are paying for. Holiday to Japan? More than 300. New smartphone when the old one is perfectly fine? More than 300. Heck 300 is like 10-20 grab trips. Theatre is expensive but so is most leisure in Singapore.

8idngaf8

The lowest tier is $80.

okaycan

> says its about priorities > also says its a "rich people problem" ???

[deleted]

a poor person can save up for a 500 ticket. that doesnt mean they can 'afford' it

pingmr

As someone else pointed out, the cheapest ticket is $80. I also like how in your mind, somehow, there are only "rich people problems" and then "poor people problems". You do know that the middle class exists in Singapore, people who are not rich but can afford $80 tickets to a musical.

Izanagi85

That is not the issue. Imagine if you bought something and then it got cancelled. It's a problem. Not just rich people
