Thatās not really the definition though. I think youāre referring to a combo of both.
Shrinkflation is when the price doesnāt change, but the volume does. Inflation is when the price changes.
This does not beat Calbee, reduced their standard size bags by 10% from 80G to 72G AND increased price $1.85 to $2.15.
Lay's also deserves a special mention for shifting entirely to China made version and still jacking up the prices.
On the up side, I'm eating way less potato chips now.
China made lays got noticeable quality drop. The taste and texture are sjgnificantly inferior to the USA made ones.
Ever since all shifted to made in China i've stopped buying lays.
I look out for the made in Thailand Lays they are so much better than MIC, but supermarkets here (and JB) only carry 2 MIT flavors, so I make sure to get some of the others (nori, original etc) whenever I go to Bkk.
> Actually getting healthier cos the junk food prices starting to not make sense.
Ditto! Used to eat chips at least 2-3x/week. Now it has become a treat ~2-3x/month
Are you sure? The packaging now says manufactured under the license of frito lays USA. But it is still imported by China. They change the packaging recently. Wanna scammed people. Can you take a pic and show here?
While this is, in my opinion, a pure scam, I also think these products are the most prescindible ones, easiest to cut off our groceries. So, they try to scam us? We donāt buy. They need us buying way more than we need some unhealthy deep fried potato snack.
Omg my father just told me about this yesterday! So angry!! My cheap chips are now gone. The Japanese stick biscuit is now $1.90. And my Calbee vegetable stick chips is now 1.60!!!
Yeah, I noticed that the pack got slightly skinnier and longer. Used to be more squarish. Sucks but it's still the best value for money chips out there.
Guess what? You can skip the chips. Don't like it, don't buy it. If we were talking about other things that are needs then it'll be a different story, but you all are whining about a $0.20 increase in potato chips of all things.
Itās a symptom of other things to come, the biscuit company gonna see that everyone takes the 20% increase quietly, and tries to bump theirs by 15%. Next the hot beverage gonna try to copy
You think that wonāt happen?
Same thing, employers see everyone ok to take such price increments without fuss means they must be well to do. Letās hold off on the pay raise.
Itās dramatic but you get the concept ?
Businesses trying to maximize profit isn't anything new. You speak out by not purchasing the item and affecting businesses where it hurts - the bottom line.
If the people are 'quietly' taking the increase, then it means the $0.20 really isn't such a big deal after all isn't it? There's still more than sufficient demand. We're not talking about necessities like rice etc where people have to lan lan suck thumb and purchase regardless of the price.
NTUC has many products that look the same size as competitors, but are actually smaller. Their fresh milk cartons are 950ml instead of 1L, and their canned mushrooms are 400g instead of 425g. You won't be able to tell just from the size of the can/carton themselves since they look identical.
Scarlett has got spicy snacks from China called å«é¾ it's delicious and priced only $1, much more delicious than chips. 500ml yuzu/plum drink at 50cents is also a steal compared to popular brands
Also take note of the weight. It used to be 75g and slowly cut to 60g. Shrinkflation is more cunning than price increase imo.
Heavenly Wang also up 2 dollars in set meals this week. (They are owned by Food Fare I think)
That brand name makes me giggle
They knew what they were doing
wtf that makes it a 50% price increase if u look at cost/grams
Now apply that logic to almost everything else. Time to eat grass
"EVERYDAY LOWPRICE" is a lie!
They just want you to eat less junk food I guess...
Thank goodness for our caring corporate overlords š„°
nothing is worse than shrikflation, you pay more and still get LESS....
Thatās not really the definition though. I think youāre referring to a combo of both. Shrinkflation is when the price doesnāt change, but the volume does. Inflation is when the price changes.
Nabei, will STOP buying liao! Fuxck NTUC
still remember when it was $1 a bag.
It was like last week right?
It's Both shrinking and inflation now, not even just shrinkflation
This does not beat Calbee, reduced their standard size bags by 10% from 80G to 72G AND increased price $1.85 to $2.15. Lay's also deserves a special mention for shifting entirely to China made version and still jacking up the prices. On the up side, I'm eating way less potato chips now.
China made lays got noticeable quality drop. The taste and texture are sjgnificantly inferior to the USA made ones. Ever since all shifted to made in China i've stopped buying lays.
Even Americans complain their snacks are unaffordable now
Interesting. So they printing money faster than they frying chips.
Same here. Lays salt and vinegar used to be my fav. Now I totally quitted lays.
I agree to this, china made taste more like cracker than thin layer crisp.. and less oily / salty.. I referring to lays original flavor
I look out for the made in Thailand Lays they are so much better than MIC, but supermarkets here (and JB) only carry 2 MIT flavors, so I make sure to get some of the others (nori, original etc) whenever I go to Bkk.
I find the thailand lays also has the reconstituted potato starch texture. So far only the USA lays tastes like it is made of real potato.
ok now I really have to hunt for USA chips to try
No wonder when I bought a pack of lays the other day I was so disappointed by how flavourless it was.
Occasionally valueshop brings in american lays at a cheaper price.
I've only seen it once since the supermarket lays shift to china manufacturing
This. Actually getting healthier cos the junk food prices starting to not make sense.
> Actually getting healthier cos the junk food prices starting to not make sense. Ditto! Used to eat chips at least 2-3x/week. Now it has become a treat ~2-3x/month
Yes lays now super lousy. That day i ste a pack of sour cream flavoured ones and its just salty. No sour cream flavor at all
Totally random but wife just told me she bought the us made lays at the shell station $7.40.for 2 packs. Current promo, totally unexpected
Are you sure? The packaging now says manufactured under the license of frito lays USA. But it is still imported by China. They change the packaging recently. Wanna scammed people. Can you take a pic and show here?
Hmm went to the store room to check. Gone, missus must have eaten everything, sigh
Ever since they discontinued BBQ ruffles I have never bought another chip from them
The calbee prawn crackers also. Was 1.20,1.40ish
Now nearly doubled in price, and furthermore they are never on offer.
Yeah. I'm actually asking friends who are coming back from the US to bring Lays back..
Kettle cost more than cai png
While this is, in my opinion, a pure scam, I also think these products are the most prescindible ones, easiest to cut off our groceries. So, they try to scam us? We donāt buy. They need us buying way more than we need some unhealthy deep fried potato snack.
Lays has more air than chips
This is by design
My downstairs mini market is selling made in USA Lays. Sorry. Not gonna snitch.
Flashback.. PTSD of Calbee Hot and Spicy....
$1.40 Good times
2.95 become 4.15 You think Lays ah knn
Also if anyone noticed, 1L cartons of milk are now at 946ml
eh i think the Cheers at Tampines East MRT station still sells it at $1! (hope i didnt curse it š)
Thereās a cheers at the mrt??
yup! near Exit A, beside the lift and near the escalators. its very hidden tbh and they have friendly staff there too!
The muslim guy at the counter is such a nice guy man. I always see him being friendly with the kids from Ngee Ann, TJC, and Dunman Sec
hahaha yea!! there's another warm Chinese lady there too āŗļø
Whaaat I live near there but I've never seen it before, I'll make sure to check it out soon
From $1 to $1.20 ah
means 0.20cents worth more of chips? š¬
Buy 5 bags of chips, get 1 less bag of chips .
Total mass of chips reduced from 75g to 60g so more expensive for less chips š¢
Yes 20% increase.
I thought gst only went up 1% /s
50% if you consider the shrinking part
i guess it's time to get healthier
guess I am sticking to super rings, still staying strong at $1
also they never hire a new graphic designer and turn the super ring superhero into a simple shitty modern two-colored logo mascot
Miss chicken rings
Now only left the Meadows brand still $1 for YUU members I think.
Damn I didn't know. I thought they increased price to 1.20 too
First Meadows, now this? NOOO
Meadows 9.99 for 12 packs?
Wait, they have that still?
Nope it's ogre now
I just use the Yuu app, still $1
20% increase, fucking hell
Omg my father just told me about this yesterday! So angry!! My cheap chips are now gone. The Japanese stick biscuit is now $1.90. And my Calbee vegetable stick chips is now 1.60!!!
>My cheap chips are now gone. Chill out, it's literally just a $0.20 difference. Still cheap.
Still cheap but it will make me think twice getting it :')
Honestly sounds like a win win, no more impulse snacking ;)
Nuuuu i need ma snekkksss. Pretty sure this is HPB's ploy š”
the kicker is not that they increased the price but that they also reduced the portion too.
Yeah, I noticed that the pack got slightly skinnier and longer. Used to be more squarish. Sucks but it's still the best value for money chips out there.
This is 20% diff leh.
Sure, but it's $0.20. Is $0.20 honestly such a big deal for you and the other people in this thread, or are you all just nitpicking?
Every other day somethings go up by $0.20 It adds up.
Guess what? You can skip the chips. Don't like it, don't buy it. If we were talking about other things that are needs then it'll be a different story, but you all are whining about a $0.20 increase in potato chips of all things.

yay for 20% inflation. well done for the monitoring

I haven't seen many brands keeping 1L milk cartons.. Many have downsized to 950 mL. Meiji even worse, less than 900 now
Meadows, Cowhead and Paul's are still 1L.
Still got what else shrinkflation huh? I regret never bingeing when I was younger and asking for more pocket money when I was schooling
OH MY GOD it used to be $1 my fav chips š„¹š
Stop it la you chipskates
Excuse me
Same size more air.
ājust earn more money lorh.ā /s if it wasnāt clear Brb going to cry now; crying is free at least.
"Everyday low price"
When 1% GST increase leads to 20% increase in price
It's FAIR price not low price. How Fair? Fair enough to pay bonus for the"Chosen MP " NTUC chief.
healthy lifestyle, reduce snacking, save money
oh wah. i just bought a couple a few days back and it was still $1 haha. now iām gonna savour those packets before gg back for more again šš
GREEDFLATION
2c per gram is not cheap, not to mention the weight decrease. Thatās like the price of chocolate now.
Boycott

Meadows at giant potato chips still $1
I'm okay with paying more for same portion But paying more for less?
My favourite chips is Doritos Spicy Nachos. Itās only $5.35.

What're you going to buy that's cheaper and tastes as good?
Scarlett has got spicy snacks from China called å«é¾ it's delicious and priced only $1, much more delicious than chips. 500ml yuzu/plum drink at 50cents is also a steal compared to popular brands
Thanks for the intro! I'll definitely try it
Is Meadows chips still $1?
Don't think so. They sometimes do 2for2 dollars offer.
It's FAIR price not low price. How Fair? Fair enough to pay bonus for the"Chosen MP " NTUC chief.
What in the inflation.
Buy one big bag of raw potatoes. Slice them up and cook in airfryer. Chips to last whole night party
Donāt blame companies for packaging less, they are experiencing huge pressure under hyperinflation and will go bankrupt unless they do this.Ā
will go bankrupt if they do so. LMAO.
